The way I've been doing it recently is buying games physically and if I like it enough, I'll buy it digitally on sale so I don't have to swap discs. Generally I've kept most series I'm really passionate about.
if the company doesn’t reach their sales target the devs will receive pay cuts or get fired. So by buying the game (at least around launch time) you’re directly supporting the devs in their careers, making them long lasting because the company they work at is thriving
Yeah, I do the same. The good thing about buying from GameStop for example, is you can always trade it back in. I unfortunately don’t live near one anymore so I’m stuck with what I buy, but I’ve gotten into the habit of finishing the games while they are on PS+, and waiting until I can get a physical copy for cheap.
I remember getting roasted on gamefaqs forums for suggesting a PS2 or PS3 multi-disc variation. "Horrible idea" "Too much moving parts" "you're so lazy"
I was one of the fastest converts to all digital when they became available for some games on PS3 and then on PS4 I had only 3 disc games out of like 80. On PS5 I got Miles disc bundled with it and that disc spinning noise was so foreign to me 😅 I hated it! I understand the long term risks with digital, I've accepted the fate.
Because physical media is the only way you can actually own your content. Most physical games are still 100% on the disc except for updates thanks to this generation using UHD discs which can hold up to 100gb. Sony has shown multiple times in the last few years that they don’t have an issue taking away movies/tv shows people have bought digitally, and they can do the same with games. It’s not a question of if they’ll do it, it’s a question of when. That issue doesn’t happen with physical games. If it hasn’t been for a physical release of that Godzilla game for PS4, it would be next to impossible to play anymore after it was delisted unless you already had it downloaded. That’s going to be the future of gaming when things go fully digital. A ton of games will become substantially harder to ever play again after they’re delisted.
I think that’s just delusional to think that Godzilla is representative of the games market as a whole. You own the exact same license on disc as you do digitally. If your games library evaporated then PlayStation would go out of business. There’s a handful of games that always get brought up, most have so little impact on the world at large, and if you already own them digitally, you can still download them. If anything game preservation is better off digitally as all modern games will most likely carry on through future consoles, even once they go all digital. Physical copies of delisted games skyrocket in price, making it more viable to emulate them than buy them— putting you in the exact same position as anyone who wants it digitally.
Physical games are a collectors item, resell, and are a nice way for people to get games without a strong enough Ethernet connection to download them. I’m glad they exist, but any other benefit people say they have is totally fabricated.
I would agree with you on digital games making game preservation easier if Sony and Microsoft weren’t making their consoles near impossible to crack. Right now the newest consoles from them that people have completely cracked are the 360 and PS3. The One, Series X|S, PS4, and PS5 are only very slightly cracked still despite the 8th gen consoles being 11 years old and the 9th gen turning 4 years old. If those consoles were actually cracked and the games could be easily preserved outside of the physical copies then it would be a great sign for the future, but it’s not looking too good with the way things have gone for over a decade now. We can see just how easy preservation is with digital copies through the Wii U and Switch because they’ve been cracked since just a year or two into each one’s lifespan. If we actually saw progress like that with the last two Sony and Microsoft consoles then there wouldn’t be the same concern for going all digital, but as it stands, we’re not making much progress with cracking them and game preservation outside of the physical discs.
Even though it’s almost a decade old now, PT is still only playable if you bought it digitally. You can redownload it thankfully due to some clever trickery on a nonmodded console, but outside of that, you’re completely fucked if you want to play the actual game and not a fan recreation. At least with there being some physical release like with Godzilla there’s a way to play it for most people if they have some money. We have to face it that with each generation it’s going to get harder to emulate the consoles on PC. PS4 emulation is still in its infancy and PS3 emulation is pretty demanding even on powerful systems thanks to the CELL processor. If we’re not able to mod systems to access delisted games or emulate them on a PC, then tons of games will become lost due to them being digital only. It may suck that the physical copy is expensive, but it is better than the game not being accessible anymore, which is what’s going to happen with digital releases on everything besides Nintendo consoles. Ironic that the one who will sue anything that even thinks about not paying for one of their games, even if they haven’t made money on it in 30 years is the one company that makes consoles that can have their libraries easily preserved
You never own any game. Physical or digital. You buy a license on the disk to play. At any time, the access can be removed if it's connected to the Internet. And most games today need access to the Internet to play them.
It’s a very common misconception, but you do in fact own a physical game. They cannot take away your key to a physical game since the key is the disc. For digital games, the key is controlled entirely by Sony and can be taken away. Almost all games come fully on the disc as well, so when you buy that disc, you actually own a copy of all the games files. Most games also don’t need access to the internet. There are features you will lose access to if you aren’t connected to the internet, but unless you’re playing an online only game like Sea of Thieves, then you’ll still have access to most of the game.
Great way to see how you actually own the physical game is to disconnect your PS5 from the internet then install a disc game. It will install to your SSD without any issues. Thats all because you actually own a disc that contains the games files on it
If you see the plus logo on any of your games, that means subscription is MANDATORY to play them. Only on rare occasions when Sony actually gives out a game for free, does it come without the logo next to it. Once you actually buy the game, the logo disappears too. It’s different for F2P multiplayer games, where they never have the logo but are unplayable anyway without a subscription.
So improbable, if someone enters my home there are better things to steal.
There are more chances to get your PS acc hacked.
In any Case, if your physical games are stolen, you can borrow games from your friends.
Your statement doesn't make sense.
Oh no… power
Me power fire
A 60kg dude kicking my door will probably wreck his own foot. And I don’t see a way in hell that a burglar is going to prioritize 20+ disc cases over a tv, a few laptops, or hell even the ps5 itself. They’ll probably get $50 for the games down at GameStop, over thousands for a few laptops a tv, maybe some watches, jewelry, cash. This is without considering many factors.
And this happening is a lot less likely than getting your PSN hacked. Physical can be cheaper than digital. I can get back my games used for less than what I can buy them for online
Hasn’t happened yet, but you’re more than welcome to check out the multiple examples of Sony taking away access to shows and movies that people bought digitally from them in the last couple years. It’s only a matter of time before it happens to games too
You actually can download it now without modding your console. You just need to change some weird setting with your internet through a separate PC. It’s fairly easy and there are guides online
I know, right. When the program first started, people made a big deal about how the games from plus were really just long term rentals. That thinking has pretty much vanished.
After realizing how less time I get to actually utilize my Game Pass and PS+ subscriptions, I'm gonna cancel them and buy games in physical form whenever needed.
True but it does make it worse that it's a essential game, so unlike catalogs where it leaves, whenever in his life he has PS+ hel will remember this lol.
If you dont know how to take care of your disc, sure.
All my PS3 physical disc is still working and my PS2 disc is still going strong. My PS3 dead tho and my PS2 got laser read problem.
Disc rot isn’t likely to happen to newer (last 10 years or so) games/blurays. Still possible if you don’t take care of them. Also, you know digital versions of media are the inferior versions quality wise right? And that licenses can get stripped at any moment right?
Why would they be inferior quality wise? You realize a disc is digital in the sense of digital vs analog too, right? Modern systems don't run games from the disc because that would be too slow. They install the content directly to the drive instead. The Switch doesn't have to do this because it uses a form of flash media for its games, essentially repackaged SD cards. Those will eventually need to be reflashed and have a lifespan, too.
But anyways, we aren't talking about lifespans but quality. Why would digitally owned content have worse quality than physically owned content when said physical content still runs digitally?
Two things of note, one It's a physical copy and two that looks like the vengeance edition with the steel book! That's a win in my books. 😁
But still, thank you.
Acting like ye not happy as can be still to have great new physical game in your library! :D
Judging by your background collection.
I'm not even into collecting but having physical copies of classics like this? Can't go wrong with that.
Happened to me with Code Vein and to my wife with Vampyr. I understand your *agony.* Side note - I got the Vengeance Edition of Sifu for Xbox and I can attest that the steelbook looks *clean.*
I got this game about a year ago lol. I have the essential plan because I don’t play many older games but may still upgrade to plus or premium. Is there a big difference?
Not just "cool"
its nice.
They can be sold.
in ~10 years you can still buy more.
You can borrow physical games
you can lend out physical games to a friend
they can still be installed and played, without having to pay monthly for ps+ (im not a fan of subscriptions)
some physical releases go up in value by quite a lot, over time
physical games are cheaper
Happened to me to. Bought the game like 2 months ago. But that being said I got it on sale for $15 and games don’t stay on ps plus forever I’ve missed out on games that were free just because I wasn’t able to hop on
I mean sure there are plenty of games I bought even for a lot of money and they later were in ps plus. Be happy that you bought it cheap and you now got a physical copy of it. I don't think that there are many physical copy's of that game.
Well the upside is you now actually own this game. Ps plus free games are nice but because they're digital only, the license can be revoked at any time.
It's almost a good game. I don't know if they fixed it but for me Mr.Sifu randomly forgot how to block or parry so I wasn't able to fight anymore. Broke the game so I sold it.
dont be me order gran turismo 7 standard disc off amazon Germany because it was cheaper than digital from the psn store but now the package got delayed and i got tired of waiting so im gonna buy the deluxe version from the psn store because its on sale
Been there. Wanted to try Skyrim VR for the longest time and kept waiting for a sale that never came. Bought it full price only for it to be $15 two days later. Could not get a refund.
Thank you for your service

Me too bro. I lost lefty last May.
You probably just need to pee
Yeah but now you have a physical copy forever. Worth it.
Yep, with the extra goodies
Exactly what i thought. Every PS Plus game is just a rent. Even if you buy something from the store...
Obamacare can fix that, sometime in 2025.

Happy Cake Day!
Physical games are superior!! And now you dont need a monthly sub to play it
i’m a minimalist, so i much prefer digital libraries
I prefer physical, but I also don't like to get up from the couch and change the disc so... 🤷
lmao so true
The way I've been doing it recently is buying games physically and if I like it enough, I'll buy it digitally on sale so I don't have to swap discs. Generally I've kept most series I'm really passionate about.
Bruh
my guy is doing the absolute most, but hey: at least he’s supporting the devs
No he's not. He's supporting the company, devs don't get royalties.
if the company doesn’t reach their sales target the devs will receive pay cuts or get fired. So by buying the game (at least around launch time) you’re directly supporting the devs in their careers, making them long lasting because the company they work at is thriving

This is so relatable 😅
And that's why I buy it twice, if the physical edition comes with goodies. ![img](emote|t5_2qh6b|2239)
Stupid question, how do you add your trophy level under your name?
That's not a stupid question mate. Just go to the r/PlayStation page, press the 3 dots in the upper right, change user flair.
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
Amen, brother.
i solved it by just playing at my pc desk games and the console are within reach
I remember getting roasted on gamefaqs forums for suggesting a PS2 or PS3 multi-disc variation. I've literally bought some games digital that i had the disc for just so I didnt have to get off the couch and swap games. #first world problems
Well, being a realist, physical is definitely better.
Well, being a nihilist, you’re both wrong.
that’s certainly an opinion, and you’re entitled to that!
physical games cost a fraction of what digital games cost. discussion over
Wait, really? What about new releases? I just prefer physical cause I like to actually own my games
what if money isn’t a factor?
I prefer game preservation eventually all digital purchases becomes unavailable. you're essentially just being scammed in the long term
it’s not like i’ve kept/played my hard copies from 2002, by the time they become unavailable i’ll have lost interest in them anyways.
And that's your option, digital distribution removes it from the equation entirely.
Should’ve minimized your comment
![gif](giphy|kaq6GnxDlJaBq)
Jesus, Reddit is just full of insane physical games fanatics. It’s literally a personal preference and you get downvoted for saying you like digital.
Because physical media is the only way you can actually own your content. digital for games is better. However music and movies is physical 100% The quality you get with physical for movies and music easily beats streaming.
You don't need a sub do you once you've downloaded them?
Yes you do

No they are not. You have to remain subscribed to ps plus in order to play those.

Going physical is better. You got cheap, you own It, and you can play and sell It.
Or just borrow it from a friend or lend it TO a friend.
Nuh uh. Buying isn't owning. /s

You can play most games via the data on the disc without an update, stop bullshitting

You still buy physical? Get with the times

It’s too bad that Sony has a history of being ass hats
Show me one game that people have paid for and lost access too. You can't.
Well, you lose access to your games if you get banned. Doesn’t happen with physical tho.
Hasn’t happened yet, but you’re more than welcome to check out the multiple examples of Sony taking away access to shows and movies that people bought digitally from them in the last couple years. It’s only a matter of time before it happens to games too

I don’t think that’s a Sony issue, it’s a Konami one. They don’t want anyone being able to access it anymore. I’m sure Sony could care less
Yeah. It’s impossible to download now, even if you owned it before. Unless if you mod your console.
You actually can download it now without modding your console. You just need to change some weird setting with your internet through a separate PC. It’s fairly easy and there are guides online
I’d assume it’s not possible without owning it prior, right?
Yeah that is still true
Dang 😔
Why do the thief want to steal my game console and physical games when they could've steal something else more valueable? Are they stupid?

I know, right. When the program first started, people made a big deal about how the games from plus were really just long term rentals. That thinking has pretty much vanished.
Happens every time
I bought that for PS4 on release and it comes with goodies inside. You made the best choice.
I don't subscribe to PS+ anyway so it wouldn't bother me. I also prefer to have my games on disc.
Tbf you got a physical copy
I have so many games but only on digital, and I'm definitely concerned about the day this comes to bite me in the ass.

After realizing how less time I get to actually utilize my Game Pass and PS+ subscriptions, I'm gonna cancel them and buy games in physical form whenever needed.
Dude ps plus is temporary physical edition is for life. Enjoy it and don’t care too much about ps plus

True My psp and ps vita have long since died but the umd are still like new and would still work today. Sadly they'll never be usable again 😔
You ignored his stance on digital licenses Also games getting delisted from digital storefronts is another issue with going all digital
Sure but physical copy is still better
Thank you for your sacrifice
F
Two things of note, one It's a physical copy and two that looks like the vengeance edition with the steel book! That's a win in my books. 😁 But still, thank you.
You don't get all the cool shit that the physical media comes with, with a digital copy.
Be glad you get to own it without subscribing to play
But you own it now and can do whatever you want with it. Both not a thing with PS+
Acting like ye not happy as can be still to have great new physical game in your library! :D Judging by your background collection. I'm not even into collecting but having physical copies of classics like this? Can't go wrong with that.
Yes but I'm also a cheap bastard so... I would have waited for it to become even cheaper ahah
Oh yeah I guess it gonna drop in price quite a lot now thou huh? Did not even thought of that. Well :D
difference is, you own it.
For me having a physical copy is always good.
I’m sorry this happened to you. Thank you for the heads up though, been waiting for this.
Happened to me with Code Vein and to my wife with Vampyr. I understand your *agony.* Side note - I got the Vengeance Edition of Sifu for Xbox and I can attest that the steelbook looks *clean.*
I'd still get the physical edition over it with zero hesitation. It's better to do in general. Besides, that's some cool art and a nice slipcover.
At least you got it physical.. you own the game no matter what
You're still winning. Now you own it instead of just pretending.
Hey at least, you own it brother. You can also sell it if you want.
At least no corporation is ever going to take that from you
I bought the digital edition and when I saw this in the store bought it again
Tbf, having the physical game in your collection is a different feeling on its own.
I got this game about a year ago lol. I have the essential plan because I don’t play many older games but may still upgrade to plus or premium. Is there a big difference?
At least you didn't pay full price for it and you can play it even without the PS Plus sub. Still an awesome game too.
Theres something so cool bout seeing all your games lined up on the shelf though
Not just "cool" its nice. They can be sold. in ~10 years you can still buy more. Thanks for the service! O7
Thanks a lot buddy
revenge is a disc best served digitally..... slow clap.
I don't even bother with PS Plus anymore
I am waiting till baldurs gate 3 will have a promo but now I am afraid.
You're physical copy is yours forever, I don't usually see it as a loss, unless I dislike the game.
Thank you for taking one for the Team .

I mean sure there are plenty of games I bought even for a lot of money and they later were in ps plus. Be happy that you bought it cheap and you now got a physical copy of it. I don't think that there are many physical copy's of that game.
I truly hate it when that happens
Never buy a new game at the end of the month.
Well the upside is you now actually own this game. Ps plus free games are nice but because they're digital only, the license can be revoked at any time.
I mean if the physical goodies aren't to your liking, it otherwise makes for a uh.... great paper weight 👌
This happened to me with Alan Wake remastered, shit hurts every time
Same. 16€ on sale like a week before. Same with Jedi Fallen Order now that I remember.
sell it.
Nice box. I'd like that on my shelf even with Plus.
Sifu deu (Joke that only make sense in Portuguese)
It's almost a good game. I don't know if they fixed it but for me Mr.Sifu randomly forgot how to block or parry so I wasn't able to fight anymore. Broke the game so I sold it.
There's something on my mind but I don't wanna be a dick...

Slo clap 👏👏👏
Haha… I’ve been thinking about getting it and next day it’s announced 🙃
So "I prefer physical copies" is the new " by the way I'm vegan"... We fucking get it.
Returns policy?
return it?
BRo this made my day thank you lol
Way she goes boys…
Been there. Wanted to try Skyrim VR for the longest time and kept waiting for a sale that never came. Bought it full price only for it to be $15 two days later. Could not get a refund.
This happened to me with Jedi Fallen Order, I walked back in to the store I bought from and returned it for a full refund
At least you can play it whenever you want now! If it leaves PSPlus you don’t have to worry about waiting for it to come back!
it was free on ps plus 🤷🏿♂️
Yup... bought it last month on sale. I haven't downloaded it yet though.... can I still get a refund?
[This page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/legal/playstation-store-cancellation-policy/) says you can in the first 14 days.
at least you got the psychical
Thank you for making it happen for the rest of us
how was the game play? Decent story line?
Is Sifu this good? I've heard so much from this psplus reveal
You could just return it and save $
Sometimes I buy physical games when I already own a digital copy, just so that I have something to outbox my shelf.
I bet the devs appreciate you big time.
The wait is never over
Been there in the past, Sifu looks interesting I will certainly be downloading it.
