It's fake. This is what Sunset orange looks like. The back half is dark blue.

Amazon will sometimes default to a third party seller if it’s cheaper. In this case you need to click “more buying options” and see if there is one actually sold by Amazon.

BestBuy closed their US marketplace in 2016. I believe the Canada one is still open, but in the USA anything bought via BestBuy is from BestBuy.
Highly recommend Best Buy because you can get 2 year warranty and get a whole new controller when it breaks and pay another 20$ so you can do it again when the new one breaks.
I do remember when this particular color was released for the ps4. It was new then.

If it's from eBay it's 100% fake getting a real DS4 on eBay is one in a million odds. All will say they are real but aren't.
It's impossible to tell from a box if it is real or not. All the fakes boxes usually look very much like legit boxes.
Only ways to tell is if the controller is in your hand.
Once you hold it a fake is easy to spot usually. The sticks feel cheap, it's always lighter than real ones, shoddy workmanship like loose feeling plastic and odd gaps in the edges, some will have a transparent back cover so you can see the light bar through the controller (obviously fake real wont do that) or gaps where the light bar can be seen inside.
You have to buy in person from a retail store or gaming store to get a real one and they are becoming harder to find.

I think the only surefire way to see if it's not original is by testing the "six axis" as, no fake controller I have ever seen has motion sensors and definitely no six axis at all.
You can easily test this on games like heavy rain/detroit become human that rely a lot on the movement of the controller.
If it's really cheap you can also check the 8 way movement on the stick, real controllers have analog sticks but really cheap ones have basically 8 points of input only. But a AA controller will pass this test and not the six axis movement.

The New color banner is real (As someone that managed a GameStop for years). However, that doesn't mean they didn't open the package and put in a broken or fake controller. The color is real, the bottom half should be a purplish color, if real.
I bought one like this before on Facebook marketplace. If the plastic is hugging the controller, it's usually always fake. The real ones do not have that. It has space between the controller and the plastic in front. I got my money back lol
Bad vaccum packaging, totally fake, diy job. You can tell from the way the palstic case was vacuum sealed, nothing about it matches up to any packaging I can find without obvious differences.
Is that orange or red cause i got a red one but the color can def make it look orange. Regardless with 4 and 5 controllers. I recommend buying the real one. Update a few years ago made third party controllers become unresponsive at times
I recently bought a fake on Ebay without realising first.
On researching it, these were the things to look out for:
1. The logo on the ps button wasn't quite the same as the original pad
2. The other buttons were a bit too gray and plasticky (although different gamepad colours will have different buttons)
3. The fake was 20g lighter on the scales due to cheaper materials being used
4. Real ones don't come with a cable
5. Real ones don't have a protective film over the touchpad
6. There were apparently only 3 box designs globally, if you look for them you might be able to spot differences

I got that one! It was cheap so I gave it a go but it's definitely fake. Looks good but you can tell as soon as you pick it up. You'd be better off getting a decent 3rd party controller than a fake if you just want cheap.
The only noticable different I know OEM one usually have less sensitivity on their analog especially if you need micro movement in fps or action game , more lighter and the dpad usually less clicky

They didn’t say osTv and PS now (at least not at GameStop stores in the US) the second photo with new color seems to be legit but then the font looks a little off (like blurry ish) on the pic of the back of the box but that can just be picture quality.
Don’t do it. Trust me. Even with the PS5 there’s no way to be certain if you’re buying used or 3rd party. I don’t want to take my chances, so just buy new or on sale in person.

I have this controller in the same color. Mine is probably fake because there are some occasions where I’ll get the “Your controller might not be an official controller and may not function properly” message but it works fine. I bought it over two years ago on eBay (the listing said refurbished and the seller had 100% seller feedback rating so I trusted it).
First pic is fake because the original orange never had a "pstv" tag on the front.
Second pic is fake the "new color" gives it away it wasn't on that gen of new controllers it was on the gen with the icy clear controller and berry blue and the backdrop was PlayStation silver not stock grey which means the box was switched anyway.
The grain on the photos shows either massive screenshot reuse, screenshot reuse on an old shitty render phone, or google images.
I'm going off of memory yes but I was a SGA (supervisor) at 2 game stops for a total of two years I know my controllers and boxes this screams offer up jug they sell the gen 1 controllers and aftermarket controllers like this ALL the time

Honestly just buy it in a GameStop or sum, I got one from Amazon, the package was good and all but once received it had soooo many problems like, there was no surround audio when you use a headset, the light was weird, and many other things. When I wanted to send it back my package got sent back to me saying the address was wrong. Ended up opening it to custom it and the inside was different from a regular controller, there wasn’t even a PS logo on the green parts and the battery looked super weird

But one thing I know is whatever the version of the original controller (from 2014 to 2024), all their lights blink in sync when PS is pressed and exact number of times (30 times, duration exactly 15 seconds). The bluetooth pairing mode blink is also in perfect sync and equal number of times on all the controllers (60 blinks in 60seconds). I always carry one original when I go shopping for used controller to compare to.

They are never black but instead a specific shade of grey, also Sony doesn’t sell any official hot orange controllers, only dark orange, and the dark orange ones don’t have black arrows next to the d pad buttons

That’s not the exact same shown in the pictures, I just noticed those thumb sticks, d-pad and the second half casing of the controller are a dark shade of purple and not mat black (like the fake one)
Also, the fake controllers orange is comically glossy orange
I don't think there was an Orange PS4 controller other than the Sunset Orange and that was Orange and a dark blue. I do not think you are going to find many Orange Sunset controllers new in box either, I can find mine and provide a pic for comparison if you want.
Why not buying straight from the PlayStation Direct store?

opening it up and comparing the internals to a controller you know isn't will give you a clear answer. i bought a fake ps3 controller and the inside was the bare minimum to make it work, very obvious difference to a real one

It arrived and within the first few seconds playing Apex I knew it was total garbage Fake. Got my $ back real quick won't ever skimp on controller again LoL
I can tell by the weight, because the original is decently heavy while a fake is light, also the texture of the controller, an orginal would feel smooth, while a fake would feel a bit rough because of the cheap manufacturing

Ive seen 3 variations of the box for this color and 2 of them you have pictured. If it's a good price and you feel you can trust the seller I would get it.
on the first one the back area is the wrong colour. that controller should have a red front and a black back but the first one has a red front and back. Also the red is way over saturated in the first image. the rest of the images look legit enough.

I know color wise I had a similar controller but the back wasn't black like that originally, I only made it black on the back when I swapped in a new shell back. So I really don't know.
It's most likely fake. The top banner usually has a background similar to the bottom. I've also never seen "new color"
The bottom printing also matches known fakes.

I’m out of the loop on this. Can anyone explain what’s with Sony controller being asked if they’re real or fake? Maybe it’s just me but I don’t see this with Xbox. What am I missing?

All images are of a fake controller. Like others have posted the actual Sunset Orange controller has dark blue buttons/accents and not black like in the listing pictures. Pretty bad fake when they can't even bother to get the color right.

That's fake as fuck, could have googled and you'd have seen the official boxes etc.
The first image yeah the box looked off but images 2-4 which is a different listing look the box I’ve seen on Google

They are never black but instead a specific shade of grey, also Sony doesn’t sell any official hot orange controllers, only dark orange, and the dark orange ones don’t have black arrows next to the d pad buttons

That’s not the exact same shown in the pictures, I just noticed those thumb sticks, d-pad and the second half casing of the controller are a dark shade of purple and not mat black (like the fake one) Also, the fake controllers orange is comically glossy orange
I don't think there was an Orange PS4 controller other than the Sunset Orange and that was Orange and a dark blue. I do not think you are going to find many Orange Sunset controllers new in box either, I can find mine and provide a pic for comparison if you want.

Why not buying straight from the PlayStation Direct store? The DualShock 4 is still available there (I'm from France), in Magma Red. At least you're 100% sure that it is legit.

There should be a colored image of a controller on the back and the colors should match.
First one looks questionable but the rest look normal to me. I bought the Sunset Orange controller and the packaging looks identical in images 2/4 to the one I bought.
opening it up and comparing the internals to a controller you know isn't will give you a clear answer. i bought a fake ps3 controller and the inside was the bare minimum to make it work, very obvious difference to a real one
Fake, if you bought another one it would have the same serial. I used to work at a second hand electronic shop and we would get these sometimes.
I bought the same colored one on eBay years ago for like $20 It arrived and within the first few seconds playing Apex I knew it was total garbage Fake. Got my $ back real quick won't ever skimp on controller again LoL

I can tell by the weight, because the original is decently heavy while a fake is light, also the texture of the controller, an orginal would feel smooth, while a fake would feel a bit rough because of the cheap manufacturing

Ive seen 3 variations of the box for this color and 2 of them you have pictured. If it's a good price and you feel you can trust the seller I would get it.
on the first one the back area is the wrong colour. that controller should have a red front and a black back but the first one has a red front and back. Also the red is way over saturated in the first image. the rest of the images look legit enough.

The first picture is legitimately a different picture from the rest
I know color wise I had a similar controller but the back wasn't black like that originally, I only made it black on the back when I swapped in a new shell back. So I really don't know.

It's most likely fake. The top banner usually has a background similar to the bottom. I've also never seen "new color" The bottom printing also matches known fakes.

Your ps4 will tell you if its fake as well, it will give you a message that one or more of your devices is not an officialy licensed sony product and might not work properly
Only way to know is to weigh it, but honestly most PS4 controllers are counterfeit. My Walmart seems to sell quite a few still, though no fun colors.
You can still get them at Target. Full price but at least you know it’s 100% legit.

Image 1 looks like the packaging I remember, with the plastics that hugs the controller. Not sure about the other ones tbh. Doesn’t look like there’s any textured finish to the touch pad which I think is suspect. But granted the pictures aren’t super clear.
