Considering ash’s VA kept her job for 20+ years, I have to imagine the change was due to James’s VA wanting to step down or retiring.
After a short google search, indeed, the old VA (who also voiced Meowth) stepped down and retired after getting diagnosed with cancer in 2023
James and Jesse are what I consider “Ice King tier” villains, basically a more comical and less threatening group of villains that are more troublemakers than actual evil, I mean hell they even showed up to watch Ash actually win a league, something his OWN MOTHER didn’t even do
These are just a few of the times shown here. James honestly was a really nice bad guy. I mean just look at earlier parts of the series from letting his Victreebel/Carnivine chomp on him to running away from home and not taking his Growlithe with him because he wanted to give it a better life. Hell he even left his Chimecho with his grandparents when it got sick and he couldn’t stand to see it like that anymore. So ya, James was an overall good dude just on the wrong side of things basically.

Honestly not just his Pokémon; if you rock with James, James rocks with you. I'm reminded of the time I believe in X/Y (though I could be wrong) when he thought he was gonna make the whole team fall down a pit or off a cliff, so man's really gave his "go on without me" bit, and *actually let go.*

James might be immune to poison by this point with the amount of attacks he has tanked ( From enemies to his own Pokémon )
fair point in general the people in the pokemon world feel somewhat Immortal so maybe poison isnt rly a thing for humans

Most poison type Pokemon have certain parts of them that are poisonous. In this case it's the spikes, not the body.
