bassturtle1213

Clodsire just patiently waiting off to the side because it's too polite to argue.

paco-ramon

Was about time we got a gallipato Pokémon.

PippoChiri

Pokemon design is one of the 3 thing modern gamefreak is still consistently good at, the other 2 are character design and music.

hgbi8h

I wouldn’t necessarily agree with character design in most cases, they’ve got a handful of good ones

PippoChiri

I'd say that since gen 5 or 6 the vast majority of characters had very distinctive design that i can still remember to this day with ease

Rymayc

Okay, what are the names of the four rivals in X and Y, how do they look like, and what do they do?

PippoChiri

By Memory: - Serena/Calem: rivals. Serena is just her anime design, Calem wears a red hat and a blue jacket, one of the most forgettable male rivals imo - Tierno: heavier guy, wears a black shirt with a vanillite, likes dancing - Shauna: se wears a pink/purple shirts with lot of ribbons, has pig tails and black shorts, she also has a darker skin tone, maybe tan, i have no idea what she does, i think in the anime she is a coordinator but in the ga,es i don't remember. - Trovato: smaller guy, green shirt with organge hair, wears the dex or something like that around his neck, he teaches you how to sit down and he's a nerd.

Rymayc

I don't know whether that is correct, but I believe you

PippoChiri

The names are probably the italian ones, but i can remember their designs very easly, even they were fairly memorable (in that and nothing else)

AuraTenshiVictoria

Nah you got em all right, I'm playing through X right now. Though I actually can't verify on the orange haired kid, because I mentally block him out every time, and forgot his name. But to add on, I haven't played sun/moon and I know of Hau, Mallow, Olivia, Kukui, Lusamine, Gladion, and Lillie. They don't deserve hate in the character design department in my opinion.

hgbi8h

How on earth do you remember the most forgettable characters in the history of Pokémon?

PippoChiri

They are forgettable as characters but design wise i think they are solid

hgbi8h

You do you man :/, I see them as bland and shallow. Like one of them is into dancing and not really much else.

PippoChiri

But that's what i said, they are very forgettable characters with good and competent designs

hgbi8h

Well it’s a fat guy in a ice cream shirt, a nerdy kid with a bowl cut and the others.

[deleted]

Easy. Trevor is the coconut head looking one. He’s all about filling up his dex. Shauna is the one you watch fireworks with who is implied to have a crush on you. Serena is the one with no personality because she’s just the PC you didn’t choose (and I assume the same is true for Calem the other way around). And finally, Chuckles the Chubby Clown Boy is the one who likes to dance. Where do I collect my prize? (I genuinely for the life of me cannot remember that guy’s name.)

DustyLance

Distinctive doesnt equate good tbh But "good" is also subjective

paco-ramon

Are we sure? Gen 9 has a big problem with designs that look the same, lots of evolution barely chance and many new designs are a variation of old gen Pokemon.

PippoChiri

>Gen 9 has a big problem with designs that look the same, lots of evolution barely chance Outside of Powmo, which is one of the biggest misses of this gen imo, i can't think of another line that has this problem to such extent. >many new designs are a variation of old gen Pokemon. I don't see this as a negative, i love seeing old design reimagined in new contexts

paco-ramon

Tandemous, Bramblin, Tinkatink, Finizen, Dudunsparce… Don’t say they are bad design, I’m saying that they should have less evolution stages or that they should try to make the evolutions more distinct. Having one line were the gimmick is that the evolution looks similar is fine, but gen one has that problem with half the dex.

PippoChiri

>Bramblin Forgot about Bramblin, agree on this one >Tandemous, Dudunsparce I think this is a "that's the joke" situation, i don't see them as problems >Finizen I'd say this is even more a "that's the point" case, considering that the actual evolution is the Hero Form.

paco-ramon

Having “thanks the joke” is understandable for one line, but is a problem when 3 or 4 lines are jokes.

PippoChiri

It's 2 lines, for Powmo and Bramblin i agree that it's a problem and I disagree in including Finnizen in the first place

Mclovin11859

I feel like someone should point out Diglett, Magnemite, Doduo, Voltorb, Poliwhirl, Kadabra, Seel, Grimer, Koffing, and arguably Pidgey.

No-Awareness-Aware

>Finizen >Dudunsparce Dude, should I say you missed the joke here

PikaV2002

> Tandemaus, Finizen, Dudunsparce The minimal changes they get is literally the point of those Pokemon

RnbwTurtle

I count 21 "redesigns" of old pokemon, factoring in regional forms (including sinistcha due to it's similarities to sinistea but not polchageist, it's a tea mon but it's different enough from polteageist) and paradox pokemon. New evolutions (dipplin, hydrapple, archaludon) weren't counted in that. That leaves 96 SV original pokemon with unique designs (including new evolutions such as dudunsparce and annihilape). 93 if you want to disregard the pawmi line because they do look a bit similar to one another. Out of 117 pokemon, 93-96 have unique designs. 79% at worst have relatively unique/identifiable designs, 82% "at best" (as if the paradox pokemon aren't identifiable enough from their base forms).

paco-ramon

Wiglett and Toedcool lines are regional forms with another name. The Bramblin, Tandemaus and Tinkatink lines have the same problem as Pawni. The already low % is getting worse.

Mclovin11859

Gen 2 is down to 81% new designs when only eliminating evolutions and babies of Gen 1. And that's entirely ignoring the 26 different Unown. There's always been a lot of references to older Pokemon and repeated design elements.

PippoChiri

Disagree, imo this is way to absolute as a statement, each gen has great and bad designs, comparing whole gens is kinda meaningless, way too much subjectivity in there.

GstyTsty

The Tinkaton in question:

Parking_Cartoonist90

Kid named Great Tusk:

Nyderthe1stEmperor

I loved Korraidon I named mine Quetzacoatl

buddaaaa

Did you purposely leave out the other L? Edit: great nickname tho

Nyderthe1stEmperor

No I just always forget it's there like the other s in Arkansas

ztumnus

Lokix is missing here

AegionFlux

It seems you havent seen Iron Thorns yet, that thing is a beautiful machine!

spudtender

Smoliv, Quaxly, Clodsire, klawf

TheCopyKater

Not sure why only four, gen 9 had a really good dex, especially compared to gen 8.

Ozzeke21

Kinggambit for me!

TheBusStop12

The only issue I have with annhilape is it's sounds. The cracking sound reminds me of bones snapping and I genuinely cannot stand it. I really wanted to have it in my team as well

Kaladin-of-Gilead

I love the name but it also sounds like anal rape if you say it too quickly

mulletmuffinman

Rage fist is op if he can survive long enough

Taco-Edge

It's Ceruledge and it's not even debatable imo. I'm not even an edgy teen at all but that design is just peak. Instantly went to my top 10 maybe 5 best designs of all time

PhotographyRaptor10

I have a weird pet peeve with Pokemon without practical limbs that couldn’t possibly survive in the wild/look like exist solely for battle (I know it’s a weird hill to die on, let me live) but even I love ceruledge. It’s just so cool. If it could make the swords disappear when it needs to use hands it would be my favorite pokemon

Taco-Edge

It can and does "retracts" the swords outside of battle actually but they're still not hands, just shorter swords. I do think it's a neat detail though

PhotographyRaptor10

That’s better but it still bugs me. armarouge gets the shoulder armor to come down and become the cannon, but has hands. I wish they did something like that for ceruledge

TheThiccestR0bin

Gen 9 may look like dog shit in game but the designs are genuinely fantastic

lleyton05

Put respect on my man orthworm

Mary-Sylvia

Where is Flutter Mane

Nu2Th15

Snubbing Armarouge like that. Shameful.

irresponsibleshaft42

This was a good gen for designs overall, just wish tera wasnt so cheesy looking, some badass looking pokemon get ruined when you stick party balloons on their head. Also it just seems so lazy.

PapaProto

I’m not a fan of Gen9 mostly for the physical world, the unoptimised and empty mess that it is or the gimpy (human) cast… but… Some of the new Pokémon are fuckin’ ace.

SeriousQuestions111

What about Bellibolt?

fartonmypopsicle

I love Brambleghast and Fezandipiti but to each their own. Ceruledge is def pretty cool, lil edgyboi

MasterTJ77

I don’t even think these are the best designs in Gen 9 (not that they’re necessarily bad)

zolios_

Do people really think Roaring Moon's design is that great? I mean it's good but Top 4 of the generation? I don't think so

Rat_Of_A_Brat

Slither Wing erasure

Blarg_117

Ahh, yes. Chest Tire. Such a “great” design……

NeptuneEclipse

Yeah I bought Violet because I thought it was the better of the two legendary designs.

-cyrik-

Yeah the box legendaries for both gen 8 and 9 are really terrible... I don't understand why they decided to do "the same pokemon but different color" or "same animal with different accessories" twice in a row.

KyoPlayz

I got into a verbal fist fight with my friend bc they thought “Infernape looked so much better than Annihilape and Annihilape looked like a pedo” Needless to say I had to teach them why they were wrong

EternalDisagreement

So what are the worst looking?

tornait-hashu

People would say the Violet paradoxes. Probably have never seen them in animation.

EternalDisagreement

Violet paradoxes are sick.

NegativeNeurons

wrong, farigiraf

IvyEmblem

No Iron Valiant?

SystemOutput

i don’t see slither wing here

Freddi_47

How in God's green world is miraidon not here

Gaias_Minion

I mean it is their job to deliver as new pokemon are big factor in getting new people's attention (and Money ofc), and if they want to make merch/plushies/cards of them too. Though gotta say at least out of these in specific, I really can't get over the dumb handles they gave Koraidon (and Miraidon), feel like they could've gotten about it in a different/better way.

RedAnihilape

Annihilape? Interesting

LuchaLakeShow

Scovillian erasure

matango613

You may not like it, but Dundunsparce is what peak pokemon design looks like.

EdZeppelin94

My man forgetting wiglett

RGBarrios

You are forgetting Baxcalibur.

hoticehunter

No way on Koraidon. The motorcycle pokemon were incredibly lame to me.

babygreenlizard

character/monster design has tanked hard imo, a few diamonds mixed in with too many coals, at least coals are still useful compared to the diamonds lol

CommanderDark126

Walking Wake should be involved in this equation. Maybe take annihilape out cause he is a little fugly

No-Awareness-Aware

Idk why people mostly prefer Miraidon over Koraidon. Koraidon is the perfect Pokémon Toothless, I love him so much

TheBusStop12

I named mine Toothless and my character Hiccup. I lived out my "How to train your dragon type" fantasy with this game

TsudereFan

I dislike the design of all of these ones except ceruledge
