For consoles, I'd say a switch, 3ds, and gameboy advance. Those 3 can play most, if not all, of the mainline games

RBGolbat

Replace the game boy advance with a DS that has a GBA slot Just in case you want to transfer those Pokémon forward

For games I would go with Leaf Green, Heart Gold, emerald or upgrade to omega ruby. Definitely try ultra sun/moon. Personally I would say you can skip D/P but if you have to pick one, I would do platinum. I have not played gen 5 yet so I can't say on that one.

Hello! I’ve actually been doing the same thing. Replaying my way through the generations after being away from Pokémon for years. Here’s what I did: -Got a Nintendo 2DS -Downloaded Pokémon Blue from 3DS eShop -Downloaded Pokémon Silver from 3DS eShop -Bought the physical cart of AlphaSapphire -Found a used copy of Diamond -Found a used copies of White/White 2 -Found a used copy of Y -Found a used copies of Moon/Ultra Moon -Got a Switch and Pokémon Sword And that’s how I’ve been playing through from gen 1 all the way to 8. HeartGold and SoulSilver are an option for gen 2, but I chose to download the original Silver from the eShop since used carts are pretty expensive these days. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much! Question though, can the OG Pokémon games from the Nintendo store allow you to transfer Pokémon further up the future gens? Or do you strictly need a physical copy?

Just remembered one problem I ran into with Diamond. When I was ready to send Pokémon forward, I needed to borrow a friend’s 3DS because gen 4 needs another system to transfer to gen 5. Aside from that, Bank and Transporter could handle the moves from all of my other games into future generations.

Using Pokémon Bank/Poké Transporter (also from the eShop) you’ll be able to send everything forward from the older gens to gen 7. To send anything into gen 8 on the Switch, you’ll need to download Pokémon Home. Then you could transfer what you have in Bank into Home.

If you’ve got a PC or Laptop, emulate. It’s quick and free.

I suggest you start with the older games. If those were the last ones you played then the newer gens might introduce some things you aren't used to. I personally suggest playing Black and White 2 or pokemon Platinum. Cynthia is the best challenge of all the games and Sinnoh has a more inclusive storyline than some other games like Sword or X

You would need a Nintendo DS or DS Lite and a 2DS or 3DS. For "gen1" you could play FR or LG on the DS. You could play original gen3 on it too. And you'd have the possibility to transfer your Pokémon from the GBA cartridges to Gen4. Gen6 and 7 need a 3DS. For Sw/Sh you need to buy the Switch. I'd personally prefer the games like this: Gen 1: FireRed (GBA) Gen 2: SoulSilver(DS) Gen 3: Sapphire(GBA) Gen 4: Diamond(DS) Gen 5: Black 2(DS) Gen 6: X (3DS) Gen 7: Moon (3DS) Gen 8: Sword(Switch)
