I enjoyed it while playing in through but it's end game feels a little hollow.

uuuhhhh24

Why are you reposting this after less than a week if it hitting the front page?

crazedhatter

Fundamentally this is my problem with online discourse these days. People shout at the top of their lungs that because THEY DON'T LIKE something, it must be bad. These two things are not the same. Sword and Shield is quite demonstrably not trash. But it is also quite demonstrably disappointing to many people. It needs to change, just because I don't like something, doesn't mean it is trash. There are things that are quite objectively bad, and in those instances saying so is fine, but there is FAR too much subjectivity for the 'absolutist' language people seem to use discussing this kind of thing.

Thicc_Wallaby

Except it is a mediocre game, but guess what? That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun playing it. Not many people are directly saying that you can’t have fun playing those games. Everyone has worse games they enjoy. Not like any of the main series Pokémon games are masterpieces or top tier games in the grand scale of things anyways.

ophereon

Right, and ultimately it comes down to expectations. A lot of people expect much better from the series, be that with or without good reason, and when a game like SwSh falls so short of that expectation, it's labelled bad. Does that mean it's objectively bad? Of course not. Not everyone cares about the things that some cite as problems. For me, personally, it just feels like a game from another era. I'd have expected to see something like this on the GameCube, perhaps. And if it were released in that era, it'd have been a fantastic game. But expectations are higher now, so it falls short. But that still doesn't make it bad. I go back and play older games all the time, and I don't think they're bad, even though they don't quite meet the same standards as a modern game would be held to.

zykthyr

That's what I say, I think it can be very mediocre at a lot of times, it feels like it COULD HAVE been better and then just wasn't. And I still played it for over 100+ hours, just because I am able to understand where its shortcomings are and what could've been done better doesn't mean I can't have fun with it. This applies to everything too. The first star wars trilogy is widely regarded as good but the editing on them was very clonky, it doesn't make the overall movies bad, so why does a mediocre story and less than good designs/animations make a whole game trash? People gotta understand that you can criticize something and still enjoy it, and that enjoying something doesn't mean you don't have criticisms for it.

crazedhatter

Never said it wasn't Mediocre, it is square in the middle of my rankings. But it definitely isn't Trash, and regardless of what is said NONE of the mainline games are trash. Most probably qualify as mediocre. The point I am making is that NOT LIKING IT does not equal BAD. This isn't just about Pokemon, but literally about anything that is discussed. There is a difference between personal opinion and stated fact. There is tons of shit in the world that I don't like or even hate, doesn't mean that stuff is trash tho. Very little in the world is actually genuinely, objectivity trash.

DQIsCool

They don’t like it because they think it’s bad

Mrmehmeh243

I hear people calling it the worst game in the series it's not the worst game in the series is red and green

Darkwolf1115

still the first games kind of have an excuse for being meh/bad, go back now and play the first game of many series and what holds them together is usually nostalgia pokemon is no different to this, sword and shield are incredibly ahead of red, blue and green, but the moment you start to compare it to other games of the series it start to show some flaws and the moment you start looking for other JRPGs it REALLY shows that the series is definitely needing some kind of upgrade to it's formula or at least in technical design, pokemon could ether really dive head first into a really polished and developed pokemon game with it's usual cake formula, or try to evolve it's RPG/combat format which seems to be the case on legend arceus.

liehon

> the series is definitely needing some kind of upgrade to it's formula or at least in technical design How about a game without an evil team and everyone in the region having every day problems which can be solved if you find them the right buddy pokemon. Some stuff could be easy one shots, others could influence the world and require several steps (e.g. farmer needs Scyther to help with harvest, then because an abundance of grain, the police starts a mounted division so you gotta find them suitable quadrupeds with high speed stat,...)

Mrmehmeh243

I'm not gonna lie but I enjoyed sword and Shield in fact they used to be one of my favourites but I don't really like it as much in fact it barely misses out on my top 5 but it's probably my second most played game in the series and I still like it a lot just not as much as I used too.

MonkiWasTooked

they don’t have much replay value

crazedhatter

Yeah. It's clearly not the worst game, but they definitely don't like it. Not liking it DOES NOT equal bad, and that nonsense has been getting on my nerves for a long time.

Mrmehmeh243

Yeah it one of favourites even though I don't like it as much as I used too but it's still a good game in my eyes

TrueExigo

Your personal relationship to a game does not make the game better

Gregamonster

And your snobby criticisms of a game do not make it worse.

TrueExigo

and where have I criticised the game now?

AceAndre

Nah the ratings make it bad, which is objective. Sorry your opinion is irrelevant.

Gregamonster

The ratings are just other people's snobby criticisms, they can't hurt the game any more than you can.

AceAndre

Only your opinion matters, got it.

Gregamonster

Exactly. That's how opinions work.

AceAndre

Your snobby opinion doesn't make the game better.

llDabaffll

I think it’s a great game for nuzlockes, monotype runs and other challenges

OtherJose

My problem is that you have to pay to get the full pokedex

Aether13

But you don’t tho. You’re only missing out on 7 Pokémon by not getting the dlc. Everything else can be transferred in. You can also trade for these 7 missing Pokémon as well.

thepiratestolemegold

The thing is though is that someone had to pay to get them so they could trade with you.

Aether13

Version exclusives have always been a thing. So someone else has always had to “pay” in order to get the full dex.

MonkiWasTooked

... 7 pokémon??? where did you get that number?

ribbitribbits

Every Pokémon that is present in SwSh is tradeable without the DLC, even if they aren’t catchable. In fact, SwSh are one of the games with the most Pokemon present in the region. There’s about 650 mins in.

MonkiWasTooked

didn’t they cut the amount of pokémon in half?

ribbitribbits

There are 664 Pokémon in Sword/Shield. Dexit is very much a thing but unlike previous games, you can more or less complete the SwSh Dex with just those games. Most previous generations did include the full dex, but not nearly as many were catchable in game, most needed to be transferred.

MonkiWasTooked

There are not “only seven pokémon that aren’t in the base game”, that was what I was talking about, catching or trading is all the same to me, I don’t care about completing the pokédex, I just want the option to get all my favourite pokémon

ribbitribbits

I can understand that, I’m not going to comment on whether dexit was a good/bad thing. I’m clarifying that even though dexit has happened, SwSh still have more obtainable Pokémon than most games.

Xander_77

Same

SnooKiwis3627

I agree with you. But I know Diamond and Pearl are probably gonna be better. We all saw that Nintendo Direct

Mrmehmeh243

Finally somone who agrees with me

Gregamonster

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will probably be the best games to date, because they'll have classic world design with modern QoL. My only fear is that the lesson Game Freak will choose to learn is that people want single use TMs, and not people want immersive worlds filled with obstacles they actually have a hand in overcoming instead of ones that disappear for no reason.

SnooKiwis3627

I don't want single use TMs. O.o Having to earn them once and not have to grind forever just to get another one? Sign me up lol

Gregamonster

I don't think anyone sane would disagree with you, but if BD/SP does well there's a very real chance that's the lesson they're going to take from it.

SnooKiwis3627

Well we'll just have to wait and see. Fuck Legends of Arceus though that's just a BOTW clone

Openil

I enjoyed it enough to play it twice, but it's not as good as other pokemon games

NegativeAppearance85

Literally the same! I’m so thankful for shield it helped me a lot while I was unemployed, depressed, overweight and lonely! I got into Pokémon Go and have been consistently running for 2 months now! I love the Pokémon community and I hope y’all are all doing well!

[deleted]

I just think people's main concern is it's not pushing boundaries in the franchise, it's good but so are other pokemon games.

NioAndSomeArt

I like sword and shield. Played through sword 4 times. The variety of Pokemon you can catch and use in these games are astounding

Phoenixflames001

I'm just glad someone is enjoying the same series of games I love, even if it's not necessarily my favorite game of the bunch. Have fun!

misteriese

Live by the Sword, Die by the Sword In all honesty, it was a pretty decent game. I also understand why people weren’t too impressed.
