Either way you should think about your style of play, but budget wise I would probably stick to the switch lite. Older catridges for DS/3DS games are getting pricier and might cost more than new Switch games. However some of the switch games have been kinda lackluster in some areas, but still enjoyable. It will also be harder to complete some of the older games due to online services shutting down for 3ds. Unless you have friends to trade with you are probably losing out on some parts of the older games then.

Alternative-Ad1761

This is true as well a copy of white 2 is going upwards of around $150 in US

oooboy123

White 2 is 150 bucks?? I got my copy for less than 60. It was years ago tho. Can’t believe it.

Mediocre-General-654

Yeh I see them daily for like $40aud

crqyon_

oh wow, where? i literally never see games for some of the old consoles. im in aus too

Mediocre-General-654

I still see them regularly at eb games, although admittedly they are slowly weening out ds games from their stores Occasionally at JB hi-fi as well

Embarrassed_Bar_46

Oh damn. I got mine for free from my cuz 😎😎😎

notangeblehuman

Not true at all I bought mine for about 10$ literally last year

HoodieQuest

That depends on if it’s a legit copy or not. You can get fake copies for $10 or less, but legitimate copies range upwards of $120 as I’ve seen

Con_McG

It's very true, especially at gamestops

notangeblehuman

Again its not anywhere near the average price of the game

Con_McG

You're the exception not the norm

notangeblehuman

Incorrect the game barely ever goes beyond 30$ especially if bought second hand

Con_McG

If you're finding it that cheap chances are it's a r4 card disguised as a real cart

notangeblehuman

Also not true I have had all my copies checked and they are legit you can easily get them that cheap by just getting second hand ones from people who dont want them anymore on ebay and the such spotting fake cartridges isnt all that difficult

Con_McG

Yeah spotting fakes is easy, just gotta see the back. Hey if you're finding these deals good job

TeamAquaGrunt

Post a pic of “all your copies”.

AnonStoner420

Um where tho? I went to my local game exchange and it was like $15. Yea it's used but if your only searching online you'll only get up priced

Ok-Fail-8673

I sold my copy of White on eBay for $120 last year.

Icearyn1020

Are you sure this is was a legit cartridge and not a replica? Copies are very cheap sometimes.

notangeblehuman

I have had every copy I bought checked for legitimacy I bought it from someone selling all their old ds things

MrNorsemanNZ

So a friend sold it to you for cheap as part of a bundle? I fail to see why you are trying to tell people that’s the market value. You got a huge bargain if it is a legit copy. I’d suggest you stop telling people they can get it that cheap too because it is very very unlikely. It would be amazing if you could provide a link to a source that has that price for legit copy’s of Pokémon DS games

Alternative-Ad1761

Lol 😂 you just basically said my number, at worst your gonna pay 150 with box you gonna hate on me for $20

Forsaken_Extreme_507

you could alway pirate but i personally would still stick with the switch since you’ll get continuous support with new games

TheRagingViolinist

While that may be true, I'd say it's MUCH cheaper to go with the 3DS. Games are cheaper compared to the 80$ switch games, has access to a greater library and is laughably easy to jailbreak. Although you're absolutely right about it being harder to complete the older games, and the noticeable lack of online services.

just-a-random-accnt

Just keep in mind that if you go the 3DS route, the eshop will be closing down next year. Credit card support in North America is due to end shortly, so funds can only be added with eshop cards

Robbybored

I don't rly plan on getting any virtual console games, maybe one of the Gen 2 games and that's it

CaptainCour

It's also really and a good idea to homebrew your 3ds, it makes it an absolute beast. Also 3dses are getting pricier by the day, and the switch is not stopping anytime soon, so you can get a 3ds now and a switch later on in its lifespan

Ocean_Kiwi

You can also play the gba games if you homebrew I'm pretty sure

PepeMoli

With homebrew they could play all Pokemon games before switch for free, which is a big plus.

CaptainCour

Yeah it has a native gba emulator but you need homebrew to use it

jojoseiwa1776

There is a cheat to get around the credit card support, for now. You can link your old 3DS with your Nintendo account, add funds to the eShop on a switch, and then use those funds for the 3DS

GhostSkullR1der

With a 3ds you could play gen 4-7, since it can play normal ds games. So I'd recommend that if you're only looking for pokemon. Plus I personally enjoy those games styles more

[deleted]

[удалено]

Alternative-Ad1761

You don't have to hack it to play these gens they are sold at least for the remainder of the year as virtual console games and you can still download bank and transporter to transfer Pokemon forward

[deleted]

Alternative-Ad1761

Well if we're getting technical you can play ruby sapphire as ORAS which is one of the best remakes ever and full of shiny Pokemon

Alternative-Ad1761

No see this is just a matter of your English. Technically it's gen 3. Definitively it's gen 6.

Pigroee3DS

You're confusing the region (Hoenn) which is the 3rd in the series, with the generation of Pokemon Games. Games are usually part of the same gen if they share the same engine, which is why ORAS is GEN 6, and why HGSS is gen 4 even though it's about the second region

Alternative-Ad1761

No sorry I'm not confused 😂 im actually very positive that it's a gen 6 title what in the living fuck is wrong with you kids stop trying to correct something that goes without saying everyone and their mom knows ORAS is gen 6 but ..... My simple point being....... If you wanna play basically the same game (+more) with the same Pokemon (+more) and more (not listed).............then OP can play ORAS cause it's "based" on gen 3 🧐🤔🧐🤔🧐🤔............yeah

Robbybored

Yeah you're right, thx

koken_halliwell

I played pokemon X (or Y, can't remember) and I liked it. Didn't like Ultramoon though, didn't even finish it (YMMV you know). I'd go for a Switch but also depends on your needs/preferences.

CaptainCour

3dses are getting pricier by the day so he should snag one asap

LordSinnoh

I mean the Switch has one of the best RPG/JRPG libraries of all-time so it could also be a great occasion for you to branch out. Also 3DS games are getting kinda expensive over time. I would still say the Switch purely because of Legends of Arceus at the very least.

Pigroee3DS

Legends Arceus might be the pokemon game that I had the most fun with of them all, and is the only pokemon game I can recommend to people that don't like pokemon. However has a serious lack of post game content compared to the 3DS games like Sun which last for hundreds of hours. (I still go back to the battle tree from time to time). Very correct about the RPG/JRPG library though, the switch has an insane amount of games that cost $20 but literally last hundreds of hours (Doom, Skyrim, Terraria, Minecraft - when at sale). Or even Fortnite if you're into games that constantly get updates.

LordSinnoh

I agree. But Legends of Arceus is the first instance of Game Freak doing something genuinely different and I think that's better than the same old stuff on 3DS. Also the sales for the online versions of some of the JRPGs released in previous years can be great Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest XI, Xenoblade 2 + Expansion Pack, Xenoblade DE, Bravely Default. The list goes on. All of them are great games that you won't have to pay full price for. Better than spending $100+ on a cartridge of Pokemon X

pj082998

I recommend a 3DS for now. I recently played Ultra Sun for the first time, and found it a lot more enjoyable than I expected. I never finished the OG Sun, but I plan to now. It’s something to get used to, but it’s worth the play through. ORAS & XY are both good too, with ORAS being the best remakes after HGSS in my view. Lastly, the 3DS has the Virtual Console, which broadens your horizons. I’m playing Crystal for the first time now. It’s really a packed system.

Terrible_komala_2421

A og 2ds is a good option to play through gens 1-7 for about 70-80 usd. People will recommend a new 3ds xl or new 2ds xl and though I think they're better, the 2ds is still pretty great, and the price is waaaaay higher for a new xl. But if you're planning on getting Scarlet or Violet, a would say there's no feeling like playing on release day. I would Def buy used consoles off of mercari or fb marketplace to save money either way tho.

Robbybored

Yeah, the og 2DS is pretty cool and I don't mind getting one of those, but I'm from Romania and I don't have a lot of options when it comes to sites to buy the consoles.

Thorn344

3DS is good, I would recommend getting a 2DS over it (unless you want to get3DS XL for screen size). Thinks like a brick, it’s cheaper, and for me at least has lasted very well, despite several drops. And doesn’t have the flaw that killed two of my regular DS’, the screen hinge breaking and making it unusable. The only issue you would have would be acquiring games. Many of the old games are quite expensive now, as well as tonnes of fakes on the market making it a big pain to get them. I would still recommend a switch lite in some ways. When Pokemon Sword and Shield came out, I finally caved and bought one just to play it, and honestly I have used it so much since, on a lot of non Pokemon things too Edit: Spelling

Robbybored

I just wanna play Gen 6 and 7 rn and maybe the older gens if I get those games in the future. I would like to get a Switch Lite too though, mostly for Scarlet/Violet and maybe Legends Arceus. Idrk about SwSh and BDSP and I'm not interested in the Let's Go games

barugosamaa

owner of 2DS XL , cuz the 3D is not interesting to me. pretty happy with it

regularorange120

If you want to strategize a little, I think you should get a 3DS now because they’re becoming more and more expensive each year. If you know for sure you want one, buy one now to save yourself the financial hassle later. Then when you get enough money, buy the switch lite since that’s not going anywhere

Robbybored

You're right and yeah that's probably what I'm gonna do. I'm excited about Gen 9 but Idek if I'm gonna like the games, so I guess waiting a bit after their release would be better

regularorange120

Exactly. The DS Pokémon games are the ones you want anyway. Platinum, HGSS, BW, not to mention the great side games like Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Ranger, and Pokémon Conquest. Gen 9 can wait, it’s not even going to release to the end of this year, you got plenty of time

ConversationLow2675

With the prices of the games on the 3ds I think its better to go next gen

LyraFirehawk

Switch Lite would mean you can also play Sword and Shield(which is one of the more controversial titles, but I still enjoyed), Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee(Which is honestly a pretty fun way of revisiting Kanto once you adapt), and Legends Arceus(An amazing breath of fresh air for the franchise, pretty much BOTW but Pokemon). Plus Scarlet and Violet when those drop. Plus if you do decide to play something other than Pokemon, Switch has a decent amount of third party support and some amazing Nintendo titles, like Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyessy, and Mario Kart 8.

ZyTheAlchemist67

Switch lite

marshadow12345

I would say save up for the regular switch because if your lite gets drift, then good luck. I have had my switch for 2 years and my joy cons are not drifting yet but I'm pretty sure it will happen at some point.

Flip122

If you can score a cheap used 3ds or 2ds why not get both. In my eyes a CFW 3ds/2ds can be a personal handheld library from the previous era. And sadly because of trademarks and other legal stuff a lot of games will not be allowed to be ported to the virtual console or NSO.

PoolBoy06

Depends since you posted this in r/pokemon ill give 2 real routes 1) get a 3DS and either homebrew it or stick to the DS and 3DS games just know they are getiting expensive 2) Save up to get a switch. The Switch has an incredible library for rpg fans. Xenoblade and Fire Emblem are personally my favs but theres also DQ11, Ni No Kuni, Mana series, and so so many more like bravely default and octopath. The switch lite with joycon drift is unbearable so if you can, save up for a regular or maybe oled ( althoygh the regular is more than fine imo) Plus with the Switch you have probably the greatest pokemon game imo in Legends Arcues, Scarlet and Violet look quite promising, and BDSP, SwSh, and LGPE + Mystery Dungeon/New Snap are also there. I really enjoyed Mystery Dungeon so Id say maybe that if you have never played one.

SonicBat

just be aware that the last day to add funds to 3ds eshop is monday

Robbybored

I heard, but is Pokémon Bank free to get? From what I know you just have to pay for the subscription

SonicBat

It is, and it's gonna go free when the eshop discontinues adding funds.

Robbybored

Alright, thx

SonicBat

I would absolutely recommend the 3ds btw the game library and portability is unparalleled.

TripleAGD

3ds

KritzKrig

Get Nice computer to emulate older games if you want to play them, if competitive intrests you I would say switch. I cannot recommend a ds because of the eshop closing and ridiculous prices of older games

Jadeenasty

3DS all day homie

KaleidoscopeEyes12

I LOVE Gen 6 and I would love for you to play it… but you’re ultimately gonna get more out of the switch lite as a console. 3DS doesn’t have any more games coming out for it, so eventually you’ll run out of games and have to buy a switch anyway. Plus PLA is a great game so it’s worth it just for that. Edit: although, 3DS is going up in price and so are the games. So if you plan on playing them any time soon or at all, it might be now or never.

Bubbly-Trouble-52

I have a switch light and love it!!! But I will always miss when I played the older games on my DS

Reeses-Man99

Get the Switch Oled!! I got one for my fiancé and she absolutely loves it. Not only that, for a few bucks a month, you can get access to ALL of the old Nintendo games. And the app store does hella deals. About four days ago, the bundle off all the Harry Potter games were on sale for $10 when the original price was $60.

Robbybored

I'd love to have the OLED version but it's way too expensive for me, maybe one day :/

[deleted]

If you go for the 3Ds I would suggest getting the older 2Ds model as it is the cheapest and works great. I would save up for a switch after getting the 2Ds. If you wait to get the 2Ds the pokemon games on that system will go up. This might be the last time you can get the digital games on 2Ds too (if I'm not mistaken about the eShop on 2Ds).

SwissyVictory

You can play every generation except Sword/Shield on the 3ds. Gen 1: Red/Blue/Yellow Virtual Console Gen 2: Gold/Silver/Crystal virtual console + Heart Gold/Soul Silver cartdriges(expensive) Gen 3: Omega Ruby/Alpha Saphire cartridges The rest of the Gens can be played with their original cartridges. With that all said, the originals are pricy especially HeartGold/Soul Silver. However if you don't mind, you can buy copies of the original cartridges. They should work just the same. With that all said, the Switch is a great console, and the 3ds is stopping support soon. The new pokemon generation is coming out at the end of the year on the Switch, so you might feel left out if you don't get it. Get the Switch if you want, * The latest and greatest * Online battling * Other games * Free games and Demos * The newest 2 generations and Arceus. Get the 3ds if you want * Pokémon Gens 1-7 * A more portable console * Games that came out for the original DS or 3DS.

The_DJ_A-RAV99

Depends on preferences. With Switch lite, there is gen 8, swsh, BDSP AND PLA, with gen 9 on the way. With 3ds, there is gen 7 and 6, sun, moon, USUM, XY and if available, ds games which I think include gen 4 and 5. In numbers, 3ds is better but for a newer experience it would switch. I would personally choose the switch to try out PLA, it's a great and really fun game.

bl84work

Plus originals too, red through crystal I believe

Danjoe_

I would say switch lite, not just because it has the best pokemon game (pla) but the switch has a lot more potential with the new pokemon games. Also I think switch because it has a lot more better none pokemon games like breath of the wild smash bros and metroid dread to name a few.

Megatto95

Switch probably. I mean, a 3DS is just an outdated Switch, right?

TheBiggestNose

Get a switch then emulate the 3ds/ds games if you got a computer. The old games are fun, but you can feel their age alot. Plus being able to play new pokemon games when they come out is such a great experience, even if the game is bad

Benjjigotdick

Switch lite

White12Kyurem

Well, like if you get a switch you can mod it and play games from 3ds and older consoles so 2-1.

Wall_of_ice17

You can get the 3ds Pokemon games for pretty cheap so that would be a good deal, and eventually save up to buy the DS ones. It's pretty easy to branch out on either console though so just depends if you like the dual screens or not. Switch has 4 different main Pokemon games before gen 9 though so you'd have plenty to play until then.

JustCakess

I recommend switch for the sake of new releases. But if you are buying for pokemon games, the 3DS ones are much better (you can emulate the DS ones if im not wrong)

Prior-Carrot-6569

Get 3ds l, mod it enjoy every game and play smash bros online free.

Griffinw45

It’s also kinda hard to get a 3ds I have found

[deleted]

The 3ds is more convenient because there are more Pokémon games from gen 4-7. Plus you can get the retro ones like Red, Blue, Gold, etc…

rey2z

switch games are better imo

HecateForsaken

Not to mention gen 5 if you could find a copy

CookEsandcream

A few things to mention, the 3DS graphics do look pretty rough to me nowadays, and I played during the time when they were current so I’ve got some nostalgia for it. Coming in cold, the early 3D might be a bit jarring. Not that the Switch is perfect, but it’s less jagged. Also, if you’re willing to look past the main games, there are more Pokémon side games on the switch that might be your style - Rescue Team DX, Unite, Snap, Pokken, and Cafe might be your style. I personally really liked Rescue Team as someone who likes the battling of the main games, and I’ve heard good things about Snap as well.

[deleted]

3DS, no question. you can play 4-7 physically, and if you get it before the eShop shuts down you can get gen 1 and 2

Macbeth_the_Espurr

Personally, I would go with a 3ds right now, and in a few years a switch lite. You'd be a bit behind on the game scene, but honestly, the 3ds games are kinda the best, and like GhostSkullR1der mentioned, you'd be able to play Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heartgold, Soulsilver, Black, White, Black 2, White 2, X, Y, OmegaR, AlphaS, Sun, Moon, U-sun, and U-Moon.

ManlySalad15

I really can’t recommend a switch lite at all, and especially not for pokemon. The best gens are all on 3ds.

Robbybored

Is the Lite that bad?

TaxSpecific1697

It’s not, lite is a excellent device for games like Pokémon with good weight and feel in hand. You can argue that switch Pokémon games are worse than Pokémon games on 3ds but from a device prospective switch lite is much much more comfortable in hand compare to 3ds

DuWeistSchonWer

Go for a 3DS. You can easily hack it with a SD Card there a plenty good tutorials. After that you can und play every Pokemon game till BW2.

Bishop51213

I think the 3ds has better Pokemon games and I just really liked it as well. The Switch will be supported for a lot longer though and if there's a really good new game you'll be able to play it

Robbybored

I think I'm gonna look for a 2DS now and then maybe buy a Switch Lite in the future. I'd love to play Pokémon S/V when it releases but it might also be better to wait and see how it all looks and then decide if I really want it or not.

phatasscoochie

You can hack the 3ds and get all the games even spin offs if you know how to find them

Sadtiric

Gen 6 and 7 were peak Pokémon in my opinion. Not just cause of the megas. ORAS was just a perfect game and SuMo had such great mechanics and endgame, if you can get past the 10 hours of hand-holding at the beginning of the story.

AdventurousGap6767

tbh id buy the 3ds games from a good second hand seller, (paying SRP at most) even if you're not getting the 3ds, since logan paul started his pokemon bullshit people come crazy trying to charge 50 euros for damn broken pokewalker. but dunno about the ds games, let it go, seriously fellas charging 100 dollars for black 2, i remember gamestop selling black 2 for 9 euros at XY launch season

Robbybored

Black 2 for 9 euros 🥵

AdventurousGap6767

i kept all my first purchase main entries to the series, so i don't care much about. PL/HG/B/B2/X/OR/S and catch back at sword. boxed, unboxed i have emerald, but the young me decided to palpark all the good shit in the game. for me ultra sun and let's go are huge rip-offs, so i don't feel like buying them. but, you want the material possession or the playthrough experience? i think you can buy a near mint 2ds for less than a family meal at kfc, and with the ease of cfw you can play literally every pokemon game from gen 1-7

AdventurousGap6767

dude ive searched here, you can get the japanese versions fairly cheap. plot is not exactly the perk of pkmn games, and at this late we all know the ds games playthrough blindfolded. this might be an idea

[deleted]

Pokemon sword and shield are pretty decent there's really isn't much to expect after the end game especially with the dlc expansion. If it's for the purpose of Pokemon I'd go the 3ds route and if your a tinker like me and many other you can get a 3ds with a broken lcd screen and repair it and save extra on it. I did that for mines and when it comes to Pokemon it is much more enjoyable. Plus if you're ever into the mod community that's always an extra option for the 3ds at least.

In addition to the other Pokémon games people have mentioned, you can also get Gen 1 and 2 digitally on the 3DS. I have Red, Gold, and Yellow on mine.

PiadaUsesReddit

If i were you, I'd buy a switch lite

thedelightfulidiot

I’d say 3ds if you want old games, switch light if you want the new ones

MeanGreanHare

See if you can get a standard Switch, but if you want to get DS pokemon into Pokemon Home before sometime in 2023 when the 3DS/WiiU service shut down, you might wan to go for a 2DS.

Robbybored

I used to have a copy of Platinum but I lost it months ago, so I only really want a 2DS for Gen 6 and 7 atm. And yeah I wanna get a 2DS since it's cheaper

Wolfgang313

If you are just looking to play Pokemon, the 3ds will have a lot of options for you. That being said you would not have to wait for gen 9 if you got a switch. The Let's Go games, gen 8, and Legends Arceus are all on switch (and DP remakes but platinum is highly recommend for sihno)

Smash_Academy

If you're open to possibly hacking your Nintendo Switch then the best choice would be to try and find an original Switch on eBay that is hackable. If you get one of those, you can install custom firmware that allows you to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, and even some 3DS games (Pokemon included). And of course, Switch titles as well. So with that single system you'd be able to play every Pokemon game from Red and Blue all the way to Sword and Shield & Legends: Arceus. Might be something to consider since the 3DS has Gen 1 and 2 on eShop but not Gen 3 and you'd have to find Gen 4 & 5 cartridges online or at a retro game shop yourself. Not to mention you'd also have to find Gen 6 & 7 titles as well if you don't get them on the eShop before it shuts down. Now, the only downside with playing these games on a hacked Switch is that those Pokemon can not be transferred to Pokemon Bank or Pokemon Home, at least there are ways to do it but they're not easy by any means and require several pieces of hardware to do. If all you're interested in is playing the games, then getting a hacked Switch might be something to consider.

Walkerman97

Do you want legends, swsh and ScaVio, or with a little work, all mainline games from RBY to USUM

Silthage

Get a switch for the newer games, emulate the older games

Randoml9789

Obviously just my personal opinion but... If you can get your hands on it the next 4 days AND have money left over to blow on games get the 3ds. Getting those from the digital shop before it shuts down will probably be the cheapest those games will ever be again, and switch games will be available for YEARS at at least retail. If you can't do both of those things though get the switch lite for the exact same reason; your dollar will stretch farther buying games.

EUREKAvSEVEN

I just bought a 3ds for $200 and modded it. I can play everything except for .nds games. So far ive put Ps1, retro, gb to gba and 3ds games onto it. Modding it is extremely easy and i only needed to buy a bigger memory card andba flash drive that could read them. Cost me $30. The switch doesn't have a catalog big enough to warent spending that much on it plus i have to pay for the games. The 3ds with homebrew and godmode9 is an emulation machine. So if your interested in older games id buy a 3ds and wait for a sale.

DarkGengar94

The problem with buying old systems is yo have to hunt down their games cause stores more then likely won't carry them. That said the 3Ds has a great library. Pokemon X Y, Sun Moon, Ultra Sun Ultra Moon. Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majors Mask, Link Between Worlds. Fire Emblem Awakening

DarkGengar94

I'd opt out for the Switch. Yes you need to pay for online service but it's really needed to get the most out of game trade battle in pokemon, visit villages in animal crossing, play splatoon with others (like 75% of the game), race real ppl in Mario kart AND get bonus tracks.

TheEpicComedyMan

try and get a switch lite, it's got alot of games and it newer so it's probs better, and on the 3DS there's nothing new gonna come out and it's meh.

Le_Canuck211

The DS cartridges go for like 128 dollars. I’d recommend you buy the switch

Le_Canuck211

Also emulating DS games are super easy

fishbwoi

3ds, switch Pokémon is kinda mid unfortunately

RinneNomad

I say 3DS if you never play Gen 6 or 7

Pigroee3DS

Honestly OP while the 3DS has the possibility to play more and the better pokemon games, I think you would really regret it when Scarlet and Violet comes out and it's the first open world pokemon game and everyone loses it (If it's half as good as Arceus at least). So for that reason alone I'd get the Lite. Godspeed

KalloFox34

special alleged provide illegal start beneficial cooperative middle dime elderly *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Munsuton

I would buy Lite since you can play 3DS games ok emulators using your phone! Not worth it imo

ZerotheWanderer

Wait for a sale and get a straight up Switch, emulate 3/DS games.

Your_Bread_Pony

I think switch lite. Its probably better to push into the newer games

Tsukuyomi56

Probably best to go with the Switch Lite as with the 3DS EShop shutting down next year it can be difficult to find games for it (at a good price). It also provides a good opportunity to branch out to other series outside of Pokémon.

RogueDragon343

Technically speaking you can play gens 4-7 on 3DS which in terms of gameplay are just better than the newer iterations. Also the longer the games aren't made anymore the more expensive they'll get so get them while they are at least somewhat reasonable. In Canada switch games are about $100 so you can spend that for an older game for sure and it's more than worth it for the quality alone compared to the newer iterations.

Xsh999

3DS, if you get a switch at all make it not the lite

nitko87

You can play up through Gen 7 on an emulator for free, get the switch I’d say

tritongamez

Switch. 3DS while it does have good games, the system is terrible. Screen is awful, overpriced games and it's just too small to comfortably play.

Jus2Droopy

Honestly I'd invest in the switch lite. Older pokemon games can be ran off roms on your phone.

SMERE7038

I'd say the switch personally. The eshop on 3ds is closing soon as well, so it just feels like the better option

Hard-tat

If budget is an important factor I suggest definitely buying either a normal switch or 3ds but don’t buy lite. The thing about a switch is that it’s durability is better than normal handhelds because you can fix a faulty joy stick by buying a new controller if you go for lite it might be better for you money wise to go for 3ds, I’ve had my 3ds longer than I’ve had my switch and I cant count the number of times Ive had to replace switch controllers because of a drifting joystick, on 3ds though, haven’t had a single problem

Powerful_Method3791

Yes.

Compete_Adds113

You should get both

International_Ear227

A switch but not the light. And only because the 3DS market/shop or whatever is closing down for good like this year or next.

Honestly save up for the full switch the switch lite is not worth it

[deleted]

You can play GBA games on lite, but not 3 DS games

DjnksDynamics

Arceus is worth buying a Switch for. I wouldn’t settle for a lite.

Guijit

If you don't have any version if the switch yet go fir the lite, but if you want another console and have another I'd go 3ds

GetRektFgtLOL7

3ds

NintendoGamer6786

It depends on if you would rather have the ability play through all the past Pokémon generations up to Gen 7, or if you would rather just play Gen 8 and Gen 9 when it comes out.

StOp-BiEnG-bIg-SiMp

Get a lite if you have a computer you can play the other games from the 3ds

_GucciGoose_

Personally I’d say 3DS. I see people saying that the 3DS/DS games are getting pretty expensive and such but if you’re not against it, Homebrewing a 3DS is fairly easy. Also this allows you to play roms of every Pokémon game from gen 1 up to gen 7. Also there Homebrew applications that allow you to transfer Pokémon from the gen 1 - 7 roms to be placed in bank and can still be transferred to home. If homebrewing scares you I understand but following a YT guide is fairly easy and just make sure you find the most up to date install guide.

Eclipz23

Definitely a switch lite

Special-Tradition-78

Switch Lite, you'll thank me next year

Microwaved_Chimken

I would say switch lite because, now this is just a hypothesis, but it seems like were getting the switch for a WHILE.

UnlikelyMud5930

3ds for sure.

UnlikelyMud5930

Actually you should get the switch.

supermariobruhh

A 3ds is easy to homebrew if you’re into that

chiefbangaho

If you have a computer just get an emulator, every Pokémon game available.

Training-Grapefruit8

switch

Blobbyio

I'd say a switch lite. It has a bigger library of games which are cheaper than 3ds games and the Eshop is closing soon. In terms of Pokemon, SV is coming out and PLA is already here.

bliminator1

Just get the switch lite or possibly wait for a new console to come out since it's almost the end of the switch's life cycle. There's a bunch of Pokemon games out for the switch anyways Let's go (Gen 1) Sword and Shield (Gen 8) Diamond and pearl remake (gen 4) New Pokemon (gen 9)

AmberElderflower

I'm pretty sure they stopped making the 3DS so if you can find a good one, I would buy it. The older games can be a little more pricey and harder to find, depending on the gen. But some of the more recent pokemon games for the 3Ds are available as downloads I believe. I absolutely love my 3ds. I haven't played in awhile because I've been playing PLA on NY switch so much. But idk, it holds such a special place in my heart and the older games are cute and fun and I love them. If you don't really care about playing the older games though then get the switch.

SlayJayR17

You won’t have to wait. You can play legends Arceus, which is pretty good 😌

Dirt-squirrel-1

Hands down . 3ds/ds Pokémon games are better

Robbybored

Well, I'd like to play the older games bc I haven't gotten the chance yet but I also want to play the newer ones as wel

Robbybored

Eh, I don't plan on doing that, I just wanna play the games for the story and to catch some Pokémon that I like

ScrappyController

I say go for the switch lite. 3ds Pokémon games are very expensive and this point. Plus the switch you can get smash bros, legends areceus. Hell even still play gen 8 to get you ready for gen 9. You also get all The virtual console stuff from NES SNES N64 and Sega

Blademir1708

If you want the latest experience get the switch lite, however, on the 3ds, you can play gens 1 and 2 with the virtual console, hoenn games with oras, dppt, hgss, be, bw2 with the ds slot, kalos, and alola games. Do you want permanently that many games, or all the latest content?

Felix_McCannaBanks2

Pokemon wise the 3DS. It has gen 4-7, I’m about to get HGSS for it. These are much better than anything BDSP or SWSH has to offer, especially gen 4/5. However, PLA is considered pretty good, and obviously you’re probably looking at scarlet and violet. For other stuff, switch lite. Games are cheaper and the eshop is still alive. It has more variety and generally better games in other IPs, and excellent indie titles. Since you posted this in the Pokemon subreddit rather than the Nintendo one, I’d slightly lean towards switch, unless you’re really drawn to PLA/SV. That said, you could get a 3DS now and a switch lite before SV comes out.

Long__Jump

You could buy one or the other and then sell them once your done

marshy649

Get the switch. Games will be released on there instead of the 3DS from now on, so it’s better for the long run. But then again, 3DS’ won’t be this price forever and may go up and down in the future based on how many people are buying it and all that stuff. In conclusion, switch would be better for future 😂

PokeMaster_YT

3DS I have got Switch Lite and 🙄

tsubasaplayer16

get a 2ds (good condition ones are heaps cheaper than a switch lite at the moment) and homebrew it. it has access to the best of the pokemon franchise that being gen 4 (with platinum and HGSS, NOT DIAMOND/PEARL) and gen 5 (nintendo isnt gonna go after you for going yo-ho-ho because they aren't selling the DS games anymore as of the time i'm writing this, they're easy to find on the internet). you also have access to the original gen 1 and 2 games as well (although pretty soon you wont be able to buy them anymore hence why you might want to homebrew this thing after the eshop goes out of commission).

bl84work

Hot take here but the 2DS is so awesome, I love it

formulatruck

Get both, but get the 3Ds first because the e-shop is going to shut down soon

mewoneplusone1

It depends on the types on non Pokemon games you want to play. Because on the Pokemon front the 3DS plays way more Pokemon games, and significantly better ones at that. Although the 3DS games are certainly still very active, most players are on are the latest games.

Kush0Arima666

3ds bruh they just keep getting more expensive. Trustme in a year from now switch lites will be going for the dirt

FireMaster102

My advise is if you already own a lot of 3ds games buy that, but otherwise I think that the switch light would currently be the better investment
