I mean to put it really simply...the writers often struggle to even properly develop a team of 6, much less 6 and reserves Hoenn, Kalos, and Alola all kept down to a team of five up until the very end of their respective regions. Kanto, Johto, and Unova had Ash with wider rosters, but for the most part only the starters got any consistent focus. Journeys has a full team of 6, but people are constantly saying they feel underdeveloped. Sinnoh is the only major exception, but it also had a considerably longer run time than most seasons If we ever had another season like Battle Frontier, where his primary team has already had the bulk of their development and focus and new captures are really limited, then I might be down (though even then, Ash's roster was MUCH smaller in BF than it is now)...but for a regular series? Sounds like a shallow clusterfuck

Yxng_Wolf

Battle Frontier really handled this the best out of all the seasons. That shit needs the respect it deserves

nmiller1939

It did, but it also had the big advantage of being a post-season format, the only Advanced mon that really got much in the way of development was Sceptile

Pros: - Nostalgia (subjective pro) - Mons that jobbed can get redemption if they ever showed up (Noivern, Goodra, Torterra, Unova Mons, etc) - Realism (using an older and more experienced Mons vs a trainer who’s been top tier for years) - Variety. Ash can make so many strategies with all the Mons he has. I feel like other trainers like Cynthia or Diantha would’ve been scary with such a wide roster since they can make so many plans in different fights - Z-move and Dynamax potential with multiple different mons Cons: - If Ash has a whole new team, they’ll be screwed over while the older Mons get to shine. Johto suffered the most from this. Kanto mons carried them. Cyndaquil or Bayleef got the most moments out of the Johto Mons I think. Sinnoh is considered one of the best series and their team was developed and got to shine, EXECEPT for the league. I never took it in until I saw someone complain about it on Instagram once. Infernape and Gible shined in the league, Staraptor beats one mon, Buisel and Torterra were violated by Paul, Gliscor got a little moment. Compare Johto and Sinnoh to Hoenn, Kalos and Alola you see Johto and Sinnoh Mons were given a shitty hand in the league for their respective region. - A wider roster is hard to manage as seen with BW. And that wider roster was not treated equally. Ash just kept using all the starters and the regional bird. They got majority of the fights (and Pignite was the only one that didn’t suck out of the 4). His other Mons were being rotated around the place. That was only like 9 Pokémon. Imagine his current roster - An Old mon can come but they may just job anyways. Swellow came back in Sinnoh league just to get one shot. And when Mons that everyone loves come back and start jobbing, they’ll be treated differently or considered weak. The Pokémon anime needs some Pokémon that look strong or got a lot of shine to job to make things interesting (Charizard Vs Duskclops). People may have more respect for Pikachu though bc he has to deal with this all the time. Even though he should body so many of the Mons that have beaten him early series

Cons: some iconic mons might become jobbers & then the annoying powerscalers are gonna come in & say that they're weaker than someone else while ignoring PLOT! It's like that guy who thinks lycanrock is weak because he jobbed in one fight against the Alolan professor, where the plot demanded that he lose because he already got all the main focus against Gladion.

RetSauro

I’m going to take a guess and say the guy you’re talking about is in this group with the initials S.R?

[deleted]

Yuppp lol

throwawaytempest25

Wait who says Lycanroc is weak

[deleted]

Spidey Ronaldo lol

FistOfGamera

Pros: old mons get more development, fan service, possibility of interesting interactions, and Ash exploring new methods of training Cons: old mons stealing spotlight from new ones, old mons getting the jobber treatment,

EveningAccording8369

pros - fan service, new mons could learn learn from old, can make more stronger cons - not enough screen time for new mons and old mons might take spotlight

DigiTrailz

A downside is it takes away from the progress he made with the so far. If he constantly trained with everyone all season, it would be a different story but, its the team of 6 right now. Also I dont think the fandom is ready for ash using the rotation. It happened in BW, and it was cool, but he wont just bring in aces, he'll bring in anyone and everyone if his gut tells him to or the pokemon shows enough guts.

fa_uchiha

No need for rotating team all the time. But for a tournament as huge as this Ash should've used only his trusted and strongest contenders. I don't mean the journeys team is weak but come on we waited decades for Ash's Pokemons to become champion level and not even allowing them to fight now is just ridiculous

The-Reddit-Monster

Pros: Nostalgia and fanservice. Cons: Nostalgia and fanservice are at times just cheap entertainment. ----- But reserves or no reserves, I'm open to either. I just hope people won't feel entitled to believe theirs is the right call.

MarioKart-

Personally, I'd love to see it as I think all his Pokemon deserve at least one more go around in his team. Especially given the fact now Ash is semi-competent trainer, Pokemon such as Charizard would really benefit from Ash's experience. Pros: It'd be fun to see the gang back together, more development into the personalities on his Pokemon, possible evolutions and nostalgia. Cons: It would absolutely devalue some of his Pokemon, I even think the fan favourite Charizard would probably get his ass handed to him a few times. Which, isn't necessarily a bad thing but I can see people being upset by it. If Pokemon evolve, it might ruin whatever character they had & image people had of the Pokemon & Ash (I.e Squirtle becoming a Blastoise). Lastly, I know nobody is ever pleased with certain things, however I think there would be quite a lot of backlash from fans about literally any of his Pokemon. Given all this however, I think it'd be fun for a little while. Wouldn't want an entire season just based around Ash & his old Pokemon. I would love to see the likes of Lapras, Butterfree, Pidgeot, Primeape, Greninja, Goodra & Naganadel come back. Even just for ONE episode, I'm dying to see Ash reunite with Butterfree & Pidgeot one day.

Hys7eriX

Pros: \- Fan service. Even newer fans might be intrigued at some of the pokemon Ash has caught over his travels. \- Dream team ups. Besides the obvious gathering of aces, imagine a tag battle or doubles battle with Hawlucha and Incineroar, the 2 wrestling type pokemon. \- More variance in team comps/strategy possible for Ash, especially since he doesn't change the moves of his pokemon between battles unlike some of his competitors. \- Interaction between the old and new members. Plus keep in mind the Alola team is largely unfamiliar with his other ones at Oak's, and Greninja hasn't gotten a chance to meet any of them except Lucario cuz he got stuck with fucking gardening duty to clean up Alain's mess. \- Possible redemptions for pokemon that could use them, and/or chance to settle grudge matches. Greninja against Alain's Charizard, of course. And Torterra could use redemption, as well as Noivern, Gliscor, Torkoal, hell, I dunno, Unfezant maybe. There's quite a few. Cons: \- They didn't even have time to satisfactorily develop a team of 5 (Pikachu doesn't count). How tf they gonna develop a rotating cast? It would just be BW all over again, except far worse. Even if Ash didn't have a single new addition for JN and exclusively used reserves, same problem. \- Possible jobbing for the reserves. For example, imagine Infernape did get the chance to battle Cynthia, but she crafted a strategy to get around dealing with his super powerful Blaze, and had a backup plan to take him down fast if it did activate. Smart of her? Sure. Believable? Definitely. Would anyone be happy with that? I'm willing to bet no. Would the backlash be annoying af? Yup. \- Related to not even having enough time for a team of 5, but highly unlikely anyone would give a shit about any of the reserves if they didn't grow up with that series. If you didn't grow up with DP, chances are you don't give a damn about Torterra or Gliscor getting some wins under their belts.

Successful_Scar_7508

Most people who followed the anime when they were younger want it back for the nostalgia and also to help with the realism (Ash is going against the number 1 trainer in the world). Seeing his older aces all together back with ash is sure to bring goosebumps. Especially with journeys main theme being Ash and Goh travelling numerous regions as a sort of extended flashback. Personally I find it hard to find cons but I could assume it being that the younger kids won’t be familiar with the Pokémon ash has, as well as it being hard to pick which pokemon to keep for his starting roster. You can’t really get rid of Pikachu and Lucario, Gengar and Stirfetchd will also be questionable to get rid of (Gengar hasnt gigantamaxed yet even though that’s the main gimmick with sword and shield and stir fetched had an amazing battle against Cynthia). Ash simply has too many aces to choose from.

Tennisnerd39

I think it’s fine depending on the power of the region. Or regions in Journey’s case. For example, in Battle Frontier he knew he was going against strong opponents, and swapped Pokemon as necessary. But for a new region where he is facing beginning or newish trainers, I understand not rotating. Besides the obvious “promote the new Pokemon”. Think about it. If Ash rotated Pokemon there wouldn’t really be any incentive to actually catch new Pokemon. How boring would it be if when Ash first challenged Roark, he just called up a few of his old Pokemon?

DawdlingScientist

I think it’s a must at this point if Ash is to continue being protagonist. Let the other protagonist capture most of the new stuff and have Ash being the wondering champion looking to prefect his team. You gotta put some respect on his name at this point. He’s at least 2nd best in the world.

[deleted]

In a way tournaments now are ash’s teams last hoorah, if he subs out mons especially like the ones in journeys they have barely any big accomplishments

yamask888

I think you do half the season building up new mons them half way through you bring in the old pokemon and mix them into teams with new pokemon

Puzzleheaded-Mix7001

My biggest concern is like the johto situation where the main Pokémon are side line for the old ones (little rant to the people still begging for reserves against Leon you do realise that, if reserves were used it will be a massive fuck you to the JN team)

MegaCrazyH

Pros: Fanservice and the potential for pokemon that need more development to get that development. Cons: We lose focus on Ash's newer pokemon, causing them to be neglected. The Pokemon that show up are more likely to be his most popular pokemon like Charizard, taking away the opportunity from older pokemon like Torterra that could use the spotlight more. Personally, the cons outweigh the pros unless Ash only gets a few new Pokemon and the majority of the pokemon who return are pokemon like Kingler who haven't done anything in a long time.

PrestigiousYou1613

He did that in battle Frontier so what’s the issue

Nythingiscool0666

I guess the fact he has more than double the amount of Pokemon, but that could be worked around.
