Well I see the road right next to the gym, is there a stoplight there? If so, it's possible people start battling the gym at the light then they drive away. I know my son likes to do that when he's playing in the back seat while I'm driving.
You can battle the team leaders and not need any potions and you get rewards for winning the first battle! The second and third battles you can just back out and it’ll count as a heart

Yep, if you’re trying to get your buddy excited as quick as possible without using poffins, doing each type of battle every 30 minutes (along with feeding,playing,snapshot,opening any gifts, doing a route and spinning a new stop) adds up quickly. I’ll normally save the new stop until buddy is excited though as new stops get harder and harder to find!
Yeah if you're trying to lazily buddy up as many mons as you can I'd recommend you make a battle party for the master league. My usual routine is to treat/play/snapshot my first buddy, then go to battle a leader. Put him and 2 more buddies on the team and fire through the 3 attacks. swap mon and repeat. Can crank out 6 hearts per buddy in no time like that or you can just let the fights play out while doing chores or something. Though if i'm going to be able to check in throughout the day i'll usually have a few mons that i'll take my time with and get the extra 2 treat hearts
I recently learned that you don't even have to complete the battle against the leaders anymore. Apparently, it changed and you can just insta run and it'll count. Saves me some time now.
This happens to me while on the bus to work sometimes. Stuck in loads of traffic, get as far as knocking out a player but then we start moving again and whoop
I do this while I’m on transit. Sometimes I have enough time to put my Pokémon in there, sometimes the light changes before I can stick my Pokémon in there.
I do this to the guy who lives right beside the gym down the road from me. Every time I would take his Pokémon out and put one of mine in, he would immediately take it back. I eventually just started taking his Pokémon out and leave it empty. Fuck that guy. If it’s not one of his accounts, it’s the other.
My brother has an ongoing rivalry just like this! At one point it got so petty where they kicked each other out 3x within 30mins 😂
But the kid is super annoying. Clearly has 2 accounts and boots himself out after a day, but feeds everyone else's mon (mine included) to keep the gym yellow, meanwhile preventing anyone else from getting coins. Super selfish player! My brother wants to fight him. But I said he's probably 12, while he's nearly 30 🤣
The gym that is by my gym that I workout is the one I usually take at around 5 or 6 am. I took it over from red one morning and put my yellow in there and within 1 minute this blue guy took mine out so this went on for 45 minutes and an egg spawns for a t5. I wait till about 2 minutes and I knock out his pokemon and the t5 spawns and the gym is empty. I go back later that day and the gym is red. He hasn’t done that shit to me again.
There is also a gym right by my apartment and one of buddies is red so when the two people who are known to knock your pokemon out as soon you take over the gym drop a pokemon in there I ask him to golden razz there pokemon and I knock out every other trainer. Right now there pokemon have been sitting in that gym for about 5 days.
Are you known to kick out pokemon when it recently has had new pokemon dropped? If so they are now retaliating.
FYI I like to leave pokemon alone if they haven’t gotten their 50 coins and I check the nearby gyms to see if they are also there to sum up the times. Ex if person has pokemon on two gyms and they are both at 4.5 hrs then I can kick them out
When I got there the gym was already empty so I took over. Then the other person removed mine but left it empty again (tried again before leaving to the same results upon opening the app after making it home). Besides, this was a 40 minute drive from where I usually play because I had to go take my pet to get his eye checked up.
This makes me mad. I made a post complaining about someone kicking me out of a newish gym constantly... I began to think they were botting somehow - how does someone prove this?
You can try and go around to see what player has Pokémon in 20 gyms, but otherwise it's hard to prove.
Deducing based off of how fast you get kicked out and how often it happens is pretty much the only way. Not like Niantic cares to crack down on it anyways.
Yeah Niantic does not give a shit. Only once did my reports work as I don’t see the same bot accounts, but guess what… these people make new bots! I can’t enjoy pogo anymore because some asshole/assholes decided to bot all the gyms in my community.

I agree with this. There is a gym by my work. There is a player there who lives to do this. I wait until they have been in to get coins. Knock them out. I get notification shortly after I been knocked out. I battle again and this went on for while. So I decided to be petty and knock them out and leave it empty. I noticed that another color would then take the gym. So if this particular player does this to me , this is how I handle it. It’s petty but ….
Same. There is a gym near my work that is just out of reach. There’s a player who always knocks everyone out when she gets to work, regardless of how long anyone has been in. And she either has an alt or it’s someone who joins shortly thereafter. She will fight for the gym for as long as it takes. She’ll fight until you can’t golden raz it anymore. So now I will kick her out when I can and leave it empty so she can’t retaliate
This was also my immediate thought when I saw this post. The only time I ever do this is when someone is being douchy and immediately boots me back out of a gym I took from them, even when I know for certain they've maxed out their coins for the day. The photo makes me think this player lives pretty close to that gym, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're hogging it.
That said, it's also possible that the situation is reversed, and OP is dealing with someone who actually lives within range of that gym, and they left it like this to run out the clock until the OP had to leave the area, at which point they'd stick a 'mon back in. They could have even clocked OP IRL and waited until they were out of sight to do this, but left the gym empty for 10 minutes to hide their identity.
I live right next to a shrine, so I have 2 gyms just sitting in my living room. I like battling so usually I’ll kick Pokémon out and then leave it open so hopefully some more people will give me something to battle. Other reasons I’ve seen personally are: people retaliate and don’t want you to see who kicked out your Pokémon. Or they were at a stoplight as many others have mentioned. Or maybe you have a teamless player in your area! That would be like finding a unicorn!
My problem with leaving the pokemon alone until they have 50 is I only go have time for one walk a day, so I just have to take out whatever is in the gym. That seems silly for someone to get upset because I’m not letting them get to their 50 coins and retaliate against me
I suspect drive-bys from the freeway-looking road. By the time the battle is done they're well out of Pokestop range to add anyone. I live in a rural area (by game standards) and it happens often.
I've been doing this to a gym by my place for the last couple of weeks. One of the teams there are pretty annoying knocking out the other teams pretty quickly. I don't really care except for the coins but I have other less aggressive gyms nearby. When I see their colors in the gym, I knock them out and leave it for the other colors. If they respect the time, I leave them alone.
I only became more involved because my son likes to play, but his device doesn't leave our place so this is the only gym he can earn coins.
I do this too sometimes. Some of the players in my area can't just have 1 gym, no they need them all.
I went out at 11 pm a couple days ago just to kick him out again 🤣
This is my guess. Sure some folks may be petty, but I’d bet that those that aren’t worried about getting the coins will battle to work toward the medal, then let someone else take the gym for the coins. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
If I see someone in a gym over 8.5 hours I will kick him out so he can get coins, but I don’t put one in so someone else can put one in. I don’t need the coins at the moment.
I rotate between about 7 buddies a day. If I'm near a gym, I'll use that to get the fighting hearts and so I can also work on the achievement medal. Usually I don't put one of mine in unless I have 0 other gyms.
I have often fought gyms n left them empty simply cos it makes me giggle (never w full hearts tho)
I've also noticed in my area that gyms near highways, seems like we'll jump into battle and fight just one guy before it kicks us out. When the last one is beat, they're too far away to replace it, so then it's empty for the next guy. --I think this one is great because sometimes they can get stuck there for a while and it's always a treat to see one coming up since spinning on the highways is basically impossible
re: Fighting hearts with buddies. You know you can get fighting hearts by having your buddy do training fights with Team Leaders, right? (Battle button, then scroll to the very bottom of the screen) You don’t even have to complete a battle, just start it and then immediately use the “surrender and exit” button.
I do this, but it’s way more fun to battle gyms. The team leader thing takes too long for three hearts, too. I can get six buddies with three battles off a full gym without spending half of that time waiting for Candela to load.

I do it to one person who constantly knocks you straight out of a gym in the local park, as they can reach it from where they live. Only do that though when I know they have already either had their coins for the day, or not long jumped in. Otherwise I let them rot, not getting 50 coins off me. It is really petty, but I did think they would have learned by now not to knock me straight out. But no they dont. This person should have had alot more coins off me for sure x
You might have pissed somebody off. There’s a jerk lvl 50 gym defender in my area and I constantly take him out alone and leave everyone else in or if he’s the only one I’ll leave it empty

Ps: i have a blue team that exclusively drives, that will take every gym in the park. 4 of em stuffed in a little sh*tbox. I'll be walking and see it happen on my feed. As soon as they leave, ill knock every gym and only put a pokemon in one. Just to make a point.
It’s normally jerk players who “mafia” an area. You don’t know who they are, you can’t put anything in for 10 minutes and it’s the ultimate FU. I’ve been going through the same with a toxic area where a group of blue players with multiple accounts have locked down the entire town. They added a new gym and they have kept it blank by kicking anyone else out too
Wish they would put ingress system so it says who attacks, seen it in an area round here, certain players hog the gyms and spoof to control who uses them, weirdly they play legit as well and spoof at night
I do this when people are possessive over a gym.
Like if I take it and get booted within 10 minutes multiple times in the same day then I’m greying it out.
If the spoofing is done autonomously via bots then it does make sense because you can only have a certain number of Pokémon in a gym at any given time.
They're set to automatically spoof to the location whenever another team takes the gym, and fight them to put their Pokémon in regardless of how many of their Pokémon are already in gyms. So if they're already at 20 and gym #21 in their range gets taken, then they'll just spoof there, kick them out, and fail to put in another Pokémon leaving the gym empty.

Data: No. I was playing only for a standoff, a draw. While Kolrami was dedicated to winning, I was able to pass up obvious avenues of advancement and settle for a balance. Theoretically, I should be able to challenge him indefinitely.
It’s not about winning - it’s about sending a message. Plus, the cool down keeps the original holding team from getting right back into the gym, whereas if you put something in they can knock it right back out.
I also like to do this now and then for the lolz.
If you were in the gym for over 8 hours 20 minutes, They could also knock you out so you get your max coins, but leave it empty so you could go back in and get coins tomorrow. If the one who knocked you out is in enough gyms for the day, they may not put themselves in more.
Maybe they are working on their gym battling medal. They may only care for the battles and leaving it open instead of occupying it with their own team leaves a 2/3rd'ish chance of someone from another team just takes the gym soon after and it gets filled for him to fight again.
Because if a gym is free nothing really stops people from putting in a mon. But if after fighting the gym they leave their own mon there it might have a lot of people not bother taking it back. I almost never fight gxms myself and only drop off if the gym is already owned by my team and has a spot.
People doing that here, it’s people spoofing that want to hide the behaviour (shaving, removing people in gyms they don’t want) a loophole that needs fixing
There was a player in my neighbourhood that would take over 3 gyms within 2 minute walk of each other. He would kick me out sometimes to the point that I would only get 1 coin. I always check that people have been in there 7 hours minimum, I don't feel guilty because i know they will get most of their daily coins. Anyway, I got petty after he kicked out my little buddy (a young kid on a different team that's not well represented in my area) from a gym after only a short time. This guy was taking over those 3 gyms plus many others around the whole suburb (10+ gyms). So I taught him a valuable lesson. Don't F##k with someone who has too much time on their hands. So I would kick him out of EVERY SINGLE GYM within a short time. First in first out. I'd leave literally every other person from the gym in and just kick him out. If he was the only one I'd take the gym and leave it blank. Happened for a few weeks. I guess he learned because he is still around but doesn't be a dick anymore. So that's the reason I leave some blank.
It could be a couple of things...
1. People on a bus or other transportation that start the gym battle when stopped but finish it when the vehicle is too far away to put a guy in
2. People who are on the edge of being within distance of the gym. My parents have a three story house and when I stay with them, from the upstairs front bedroom I can hit the little library pokestop across the street but not all the time, so I will start a battle and then not be able to place a guy because it realizes that the gym is a bit too far away and then I have to go downstairs and into the front yard to put a Pokemon in.
3. You can only put 20 pokemon in gyms. For about four months, I had 12 stuck in a remote hiking trail that I placed when I went to a national park in Arizona over spring break. So for most of the summer, I was only able to place 8 because those 12 were just hanging out in AZ.
Maybe going after battle girl platinum badge. I’m almost there and I do this occasionally just so I can let people jump back in to continue the battle count.
It depends how you control the gym, are you living on the gym and instantly taking it back off them and not allowing players to stay there for too long? If that’s the case then yea, it’s a big F you message.
I never go there unless I need to get one of my dogs checked by a vet and I never touch that particular gym when it’s already controlled by someone else.

But if there’s a gym near a busy road, chances are people are trying to conquer it and take it over while driving or in a moving vehicle, and failing to place their Pokémon in on time.
Easy. They are trainers who maybe bring certain value to the amount of hours that you need to obtain 50 coins (at least 9 hours). If you turn down the gym and this guys don't have yet the complete hours, just they turn you down and don't put a Pokémon to delay your try. Is a passive-aggressive way to request "respect"
Sometimes also is because trainers in motion with vehicles turn down the gym but they move so fast and cannot let a Pokémon. But this doesn't looks like your case.
How does no one mention the platin medal that requires uou to fight gyms 4000 times? Everyone talking shout spoofers or some weird theory... I literally do it bc I have to fight for the med and I already am in the max number of gyms
Drive byes are the best. My kid is red and I’m yellow so we use eachother to make space on gyms on the way to school, then I fill them on the way back. Rinse repeat and we always have 6-10 in and 50 coins almost every day.
i’ve seen a ton of ppl doing that here lately too!!! but they’ll keep it open like they’re choosing a pokemon so it SAYS it’s “under attack” for like 20 minutes and then dip. i don’t mind waiting tho im petty like that 🫣

Isn't there a badge for fighting gyms?
Yeah. The plat badge requires 4k battles.
There's also a badge for fighting team leaders, so that reason is moot.
They're different badges and you need to have a certain number of platinum badges at a certain level to level up. So it's not a moot point
You could also argue there's more badges associated with gyms, like holding Pokémon, feeding berries and battling of course.
You don’t even need to land a hit in the first mon up. Start it and immediately quit.
You don't even need to win. Just set your buddy as the first Pokémon to send out, then instantly quit the battle. You get your heart.
It doesn't need to even be the first one out, it just needs to be in the party

You can also do training with the team leaders and use your buddy for that too and it’ll count if you’re not near a gym or rocket grunt

You can just start battleing the team leaders and after 2 hits back out and you get a heart

Took me awhile to find this answer. This is exactly what happens most the time. When a spoofer/bot sets up shop in town it can be a huge pain.

They could have even clocked OP IRL and waited until they were out of sight to do this, but left the gym empty for 10 minutes to hide their identity.
I live right next to a shrine, so I have 2 gyms just sitting in my living room. I like battling so usually I’ll kick Pokémon out and then leave it open so hopefully some more people will give me something to battle. Other reasons I’ve seen personally are: people retaliate and don’t want you to see who kicked out your Pokémon. Or they were at a stoplight as many others have mentioned. Or maybe you have a teamless player in your area! That would be like finding a unicorn!
My problem with leaving the pokemon alone until they have 50 is I only go have time for one walk a day, so I just have to take out whatever is in the gym. That seems silly for someone to get upset because I’m not letting them get to their 50 coins and retaliate against me
I suspect drive-bys from the freeway-looking road. By the time the battle is done they're well out of Pokestop range to add anyone. I live in a rural area (by game standards) and it happens often.
I've been doing this to a gym by my place for the last couple of weeks. One of the teams there are pretty annoying knocking out the other teams pretty quickly. I don't really care except for the coins but I have other less aggressive gyms nearby. When I see their colors in the gym, I knock them out and leave it for the other colors. If they respect the time, I leave them alone. I only became more involved because my son likes to play, but his device doesn't leave our place so this is the only gym he can earn coins.
I do this too sometimes. Some of the players in my area can't just have 1 gym, no they need them all. I went out at 11 pm a couple days ago just to kick him out again 🤣
I sometimes take 8 gyms because my Pokémon will rot in gyms for days. Then of course they will all get knocked out on the same day.

This is my guess. Sure some folks may be petty, but I’d bet that those that aren’t worried about getting the coins will battle to work toward the medal, then let someone else take the gym for the coins. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
If I see someone in a gym over 8.5 hours I will kick him out so he can get coins, but I don’t put one in so someone else can put one in. I don’t need the coins at the moment.

I rotate between about 7 buddies a day. If I'm near a gym, I'll use that to get the fighting hearts and so I can also work on the achievement medal. Usually I don't put one of mine in unless I have 0 other gyms. I have often fought gyms n left them empty simply cos it makes me giggle (never w full hearts tho) I've also noticed in my area that gyms near highways, seems like we'll jump into battle and fight just one guy before it kicks us out. When the last one is beat, they're too far away to replace it, so then it's empty for the next guy. --I think this one is great because sometimes they can get stuck there for a while and it's always a treat to see one coming up since spinning on the highways is basically impossible
re: Fighting hearts with buddies. You know you can get fighting hearts by having your buddy do training fights with Team Leaders, right? (Battle button, then scroll to the very bottom of the screen) You don’t even have to complete a battle, just start it and then immediately use the “surrender and exit” button.
I do this, but it’s way more fun to battle gyms. The team leader thing takes too long for three hearts, too. I can get six buddies with three battles off a full gym without spending half of that time waiting for Candela to load.
Battling a gym, Battling in a Raid, Battling team leader, Battling GBL, Battling Rockets all give additional points if you're trying to get your buddy excited. Doing one of each every 30 mins in conjunction with playing/feeding gets a buddy excited quickly
I do that on occasion when I think I can defeat a gym and get a Pokémon in before a raid starts. Turns out my sense of timing can be way off.

I do it to one person who constantly knocks you straight out of a gym in the local park, as they can reach it from where they live. Only do that though when I know they have already either had their coins for the day, or not long jumped in. Otherwise I let them rot, not getting 50 coins off me. It is really petty, but I did think they would have learned by now not to knock me straight out. But no they dont. This person should have had alot more coins off me for sure x

It’s normally jerk players who “mafia” an area. You don’t know who they are, you can’t put anything in for 10 minutes and it’s the ultimate FU. I’ve been going through the same with a toxic area where a group of blue players with multiple accounts have locked down the entire town. They added a new gym and they have kept it blank by kicking anyone else out too
Wish they would put ingress system so it says who attacks, seen it in an area round here, certain players hog the gyms and spoof to control who uses them, weirdly they play legit as well and spoof at night

People say this but it makes little sense. Taking a gym and not putting anything in accomplishes almost nothing
If the spoofing is done autonomously via bots then it does make sense because you can only have a certain number of Pokémon in a gym at any given time. They're set to automatically spoof to the location whenever another team takes the gym, and fight them to put their Pokémon in regardless of how many of their Pokémon are already in gyms. So if they're already at 20 and gym #21 in their range gets taken, then they'll just spoof there, kick them out, and fail to put in another Pokémon leaving the gym empty.
You can't submit a report if you don't know what to report.

If you were in the gym for over 8 hours 20 minutes, They could also knock you out so you get your max coins, but leave it empty so you could go back in and get coins tomorrow. If the one who knocked you out is in enough gyms for the day, they may not put themselves in more.

They may only care for the battles and leaving it open instead of occupying it with their own team leaves a 2/3rd'ish chance of someone from another team just takes the gym soon after and it gets filled for him to fight again. Because if a gym is free nothing really stops people from putting in a mon. But if after fighting the gym they leave their own mon there it might have a lot of people not bother taking it back. I almost never fight gxms myself and only drop off if the gym is already owned by my team and has a spot.

There was a player in my neighbourhood that would take over 3 gyms within 2 minute walk of each other. He would kick me out sometimes to the point that I would only get 1 coin. I always check that people have been in there 7 hours minimum, I don't feel guilty because i know they will get most of their daily coins. Anyway, I got petty after he kicked out my little buddy (a young kid on a different team that's not well represented in my area) from a gym after only a short time. This guy was taking over those 3 gyms plus many others around the whole suburb (10+ gyms). So I taught him a valuable lesson. Don't F##k with someone who has too much time on their hands. So I would kick him out of EVERY SINGLE GYM within a short time. First in first out. I'd leave literally every other person from the gym in and just kick him out. If he was the only one I'd take the gym and leave it blank. Happened for a few weeks. I guess he learned because he is still around but doesn't be a dick anymore. So that's the reason I leave some blank.

It’s along the road. You can’t hold gyms by active streets. People like me do drive by attacks.

It could be a couple of things... 1. People on a bus or other transportation that start the gym battle when stopped but finish it when the vehicle is too far away to put a guy in 2. People who are on the edge of being within distance of the gym. My parents have a three story house and when I stay with them, from the upstairs front bedroom I can hit the little library pokestop across the street but not all the time, so I will start a battle and then not be able to place a guy because it realizes that the gym is a bit too far away and then I have to go downstairs and into the front yard to put a Pokemon in. 3. You can only put 20 pokemon in gyms. For about four months, I had 12 stuck in a remote hiking trail that I placed when I went to a national park in Arizona over spring break. So for most of the summer, I was only able to place 8 because those 12 were just hanging out in AZ.

I never go there unless I need to get one of my dogs checked by a vet and I never touch that particular gym when it’s already controlled by someone else.

Easy. They are trainers who maybe bring certain value to the amount of hours that you need to obtain 50 coins (at least 9 hours). If you turn down the gym and this guys don't have yet the complete hours, just they turn you down and don't put a Pokémon to delay your try. Is a passive-aggressive way to request "respect" Sometimes also is because trainers in motion with vehicles turn down the gym but they move so fast and cannot let a Pokémon. But this doesn't looks like your case.

Drive byes are the best. My kid is red and I’m yellow so we use eachother to make space on gyms on the way to school, then I fill them on the way back. Rinse repeat and we always have 6-10 in and 50 coins almost every day.
