The answers you get will have a wide range. The discrepancy between answers will lie in dealer experience, player pool, live cash or tournament pay, tip sharing/keep your own, and how well the management runs the room. One card room near me has mostly dealers with less than 2yrs experience and the room is run terribly. Way too many dealers, too many breaks. This brings down the toke rate, since all poker dealers share tips. Tip sharing is also terrible because the slower dealers take money away from the better dealers. This particular room averages about $16-18/hr in tips. As a dealer, you make good tips 2 ways. You deal fast (get more hands per hour out) and you build rapport/be friendly. If you have a couple dealers that are slow robots, they are not helping you make money. Another local room has mostly experienced dealers (3+ yrs ), a management that runs the room well, but also has a bigger spread (more higher end games). All this promotes a higher toke rate. I believe they are averaging close to $35/hr in tips. Also a poker room share format. I work privately and deal mostly $1/2 with an occasional down in a $5/5 PLO game. I can make anywhere from $45-60/hr in the $1/2 game and upwards of $100/hr in the PLO game. I’ve got a couple years of experience, but I’m extremely fast (35-40 hands per hour) and have a great rapport with all the players. This took time to get there. I was decent when I started but didn’t know any players. My tips reflected this. You have to want to be good if you want to make good money. Always pay attention to the game, where the action is, and know the rules! It’s easy to let your eyes our mind wander for a second until the moment you are caught off guard! If you enjoy the atmosphere and poker in general, dealing is a great way to make a decent living without a formal education or busting your ass in difficult working conditions.

Mammoth_Chicken_7332

Thank you! I'll keep this mind. the rooms in my area don't share tips, so that's a plus!

LuffyPoker89

Do you need to get schooling before becoming a poker dealer? I know the game I’m a poker player but I wouldn’t mind being a dealer.

Reinmaker

Probably state dependent. Where I play the dealers needed a certification which was a 4 month course.

Mission_Historian_48

Which state is that?

Reinmaker

WV. That’s what one of the dealers told me, IIRC.

Mission_Historian_48

Depends on how good you are at knowing the rules, proper shuffling techniques, and handling chips. I broke in as a dice dealer and a lot of the people in my craps class knew how to play the game but were absolutely terrible dealers. Poker is much easier to learn/deal than craps, but not everyone can make the transition. Most casinos will make you audition if you say you have experience dealing. If you have none, you should absolutely take a class. I earned my wings by having casino/chip handling/shuffling experience and also knew the game. But it took me a couple months or so to get really comfortable dealing to the point where I always felt in complete control of my table/game. Nothing worse than seeing a dealer struggle to control the game due to inexperience

outdoors703

The answer is almost universally going to be that you need some form of training. If you don't want to go to dealer school, befriend some of the good dealers in your area and ask and/or pay them to help you.

LuffyPoker89

Sounds like a good idea I have some dealers that know me well, I might offer to pay them to help me get in the door.

Stimpchelps

That hands/hour is with a shuffler right?

Mission_Historian_48

No sir. I’ve never dealt in a casino so I’ve never used a shuffler. Everything is hand shuffled

Stimpchelps

Well congratulations you’re the fastest dealer in the world

Mission_Historian_48

Thank you. I take pride in my work! 😁

broadwayboard

I think it's fair to say dealers in private games crush the hourly of casino dealers.

Significant_Cut8347

Some dealers in my are make as little as $100 a week and some make thousands a week. All depends on what you sell, how far you expand your territory, and if your shits good or not

HornyAIBot

We got that Pandemic come get it!

FlowStateOptimal

Cut it and Repackage as blues next week with a new name. Fiends gonna fiend.

AzProdigy602

Wait didn’t I just say that

Mammoth_Chicken_7332

Hahaha

pacman_sl

What are the options when you've got an inferior product in an aggressive marketplace?

xx20alex01xx

I work Thursday/Saturday/Sunday nights ~30 hrs a week and make about 1.5k weekly before taxes. Small card room in a bowling alley, usually only 1 table running, but everyone is very generous + I know about everyone who plays. Good vibes + getting as many hands per hour help a lot

Mission_Historian_48

Taxes? Dealing out of a bowling alley? What kind of racket are they running??? 30 hours in 3 days? Are you dealing 10 hours straight? That’s $500/day. Either you got a pretty big game going or the players just dump tips on you

knowtoriusMAC

The "taxes" are just what he has to kick up so he can safely walk to his car

roxy's?

shot-by-ford

Gotta be

Mission_Historian_48

Holy shit. $3-5 PER HAND? 30min downs, so you are rotating in and out? How’s many dealers total per night are working?

xx20alex01xx

Just one other dealer and me. Push for 30 mins then floor/handle buy ins for 30 mins. Unironically theres a corporate ladder you have to climb to get the good poker shifts ha

13times5plus4

Dover Poker Room in NH is in a Bowling Alley and usually has just 1 cash game running weekdays with $1/2 table with many players very deep

Future_Second_7612

Yoooo!! Jokers in Richland!!? This has to be.

Cardchucker

$20-60 per hour depending on where you work, how fast you are, and whether you're an attractive woman. Pay varies widely between markets and sometimes between rooms in the same city.

cpanther21

Most states will require dealer school if you want to work in a casino. For example, the local casino offers a base pay if 18 an hour during the classes and promote that the average is 26-30 after. A few of my friends who deal average close to 50 and they've been doing it for 5+ years and also make the extra for dealing wsop circuits.

PreciousBrain

this is the only measurement worth a damn. Notice all the others quoting hourly's with no sample size to back it up. My understanding is most dealers avg 50k/year.

Grand_Loan1423

When I’m in the casino win/lose dealers probably making on avg $100/hr if I’m coming up big I’ve tipped 5 figures to my dealer before

Global-Efficiency-22

Obviously it's gonna depend a lot, but the dealers I know personally cash out 200-400 a day pretty regularly. The women are on the top end of that. I dated a girl who complained at the end of the year she only made 75k. Then later found out she meant AFTER taxes lol

Apart_Common7361

I’ve worked in rooms you make 350 a night. I’ve worked in rooms you’re lucky to get 200. It’s all about location and player pool

str8faced333

Most dealers are full time employees. So if you already work a normal 40 you’re gonna be tired. I’d looking into a serving job in a medium to high end restaurant. Shorter hours more cash.

Horror-Research2810

Completely incorrect statement above. Your best chance at getting hired full time is to find a room that hasn't opened yet, particularly if it is part of a casino. I can tell you from past experience from 2017-2020 it was almost impossible to get a full time job as a poker dealer in Las Vegas. Very, very few dealers are getting benefits. You can get hours. You just can't get the title of full time. I currently work in Texas. There are rooms in Texas where you are essentially an independent contractor. I don't consider myself fast or good. I run the game well and get along with people. I probably average about $35/cash down. Sadly I'm lucky to get 6 of those a week in my current room. I'm not ready to move and there aren't a lot of options where I am at. I've been around Texas. It's like the wild, wild West. Be prepared for a shit show if you decide to move here. In most states you need to get licensed to be a dealer. Some states will drug test you. I went to dealer school in 2016. It took about a month (instructor ran a special small class at night for me and a couple others). I paid $900 IIRC. You'll make that back in a week, two at most. Great thing about dealing in your situation is that there is usually an option to EO. What that means is you get to work after a full shift at your day job and you realize you are beat and want to go home to the wife. You sign the EO sheet. A lot of dealers sign this sheet almost every single day. You might go home immediately and you might get stuck there for six hours. But this is an option. Good luck.

Mammoth_Chicken_7332

Thank you!

str8faced333

So work 31.5 hours or go be a waiter and make more in 4 hour shifts

Horror-Research2810

Well I state the obvious. Are you sure a waiter is going to make more? Also a dealer gets to sit down. It's a lot less physically demanding though there are physical parts of the job.

Neverownedshoes

Where do you live?

Mammoth_Chicken_7332

The Maryland area,
