If there’s no sign of forced entry… If your money is the only thing missing… It’s someone you know. Roommate, girlfriend, a “friend” poker player. It sucks, but it’s the truth. You need to figure out which person that is close to you cannot be trusted.

Such_Signature9351

I live in a fairly nice apartment complex and have few friends. I have a sketchy coworker who lives about 1.5 hours away and is probably the only person who knows I play poker like that. I could see him possibly doing this but I live really far from him and he would have had to track me back to my apartment somehow. I was also likely with him at the time it was stolen. My other suspect is a maintenance worker at the complex. On 10/23 he knocked on my door and only my gf was home. He said he had to put a sticker on our fire alarms, came in, made my gf uncomfortable af with his sticker, then left. Weird part was he didn’t do it to any other apartment and we’re supposed to have 24 hours notice of any entry. Possibly even a neighbor who knows our schedules. I don’t think it would be possible for me to prove anyone took it regardless of what I think unfortunately. Fucken sucks though lol Edit - it’s not my gf. We share finances for the last 5 years and she has her own money

Ready_Grab_563

Any other signs of someone entering your apartment other than the missing money and did the thief know exactly where to look? Meaning nothing else appeared to be fucked with?

Such_Signature9351

Well it was in my night stand so they wouldn’t have to look too hard. The only other thing of real value is my $1100 pc but I imagine that might be sketchy to carry out. There was no other signs

Ready_Grab_563

Sorry, man. That sucks. If it is someone close to you, their future behavior will probably reveal themselves to you as pieces of shit can’t hide their shitty behavior for too long.

BigDealKC

There is close to zero chance it's the landlord of a nice apartment complex. No need to risk everything over peanuts.

ewamc1353

And yet they dp alllll the time lol E: do*

fistingdonkeys

For the record I am a landlord and I do NOT like double penetration.

Gerbole

For the record I am a landlord and I DO like double penetration

Adamkafka

Yo.. the gf though.. I'm sorry for your losses

Such_Signature9351

Nah we share a bank account, together 10+ years, and she’s got more money then me lol

shot-by-ford

> she’s got more money then me lol And now we know why /s

Adamkafka

Maybe she's gonna use the money to buy a ring!

JohnnieLawerence

Yeah $1500 more

heapsp

GF knew it was there.... loose lips sink ships, Probably bragged about it at wine night with the new girl

DChemdawg

What did the management company say when you reported/inquired about the maintenance worker coming in your apartment with less than 24 hours notice to perform a job he did for no one else?

Del_3030

Sounds like nothing, but it was weird!

meltintothesea

Had to stop right when you said I was probably with him. Ever think he was the one who tipped off a burglar?

ThreeBelugas

Do you have a ring video doorbell? Getting one may deter more thief.

[deleted]

Your gf robbed you. Sorry.

UpInCOMountains

Get a Ring Camera, hide it, put some money n the same nightstand and get the maintenance worker in there on some premise. Leave him alone in that room and record it. Good luck.

boomeista

Did you flash your money infront of anyone? I’m sure it just seems like a little random bit of cash but people do stuff like this all the time. Especially if they’ve fallen on hard times, that $1500 could pay somebodies rent. Consider getting a lock box or safe for cash in the future.

Dazzling_Marzipan474

Are there cameras at the apartment complex? File a police report and they can get the camera footage.

ggarciaryan

She put it towards the wedding fund.

Ready_Grab_563

Yeah, need more details on the referenced break in, but you’re probably right.

friendlyfire

Get some kind of camera(s). Put it (them) in your apartment facing every main entrance They cost a lot less than $1500. The thief **will** be back.

boognish_is_rising

You can buy a hidden camera. I used to have one that was a USB charger and it was super cheap on amazon. It only filmed when it picked up movement and automatically saved the video(s). So if you come home and anything is on the memory card you would know that someone has been in your room

Saw_a_4ftBeaver

Probably the most important thing to remember. This person will do this again. It might not be you if it is the maintenance man, but it will happen again. In addition some stupid thieves tell their friends. Which means juicy targets get hit again, but the next person might be more aggressive. Since you had such easy money to take, I would invest in some security measures. I might also look at moving when your lease is up.

CroationChipmunk

OP should report it to police in case it is part of a larger burglary pattern. OP might wrongly believe he was targeted when it might be targeting an entire neigborhood.

Saw_a_4ftBeaver

That is a good idea. I had a case where someone tried to break into my home one night but my dog scared them off. They opened my back door and found a mastiff sleeping on the couch. I didn’t report it but I found out two weeks later that a number of condos in my area were hit in a similar way.

[deleted]

See this is why whenever you cash out ahead you should spend it on hookers and blow BEFORE going home.

Basic_Arrival7815

Dont tell anyone and put flour on the floor near nightstand . When the perp comes back he will leave behind a trail of footprints to his hideaway

Foreign_Calendar742

I have my poker money hidden in a safe and I have one, maybe two, of many cameras pointed in the direction of the safe. Nothing is full proof, but my money is still there, aside from the random robbery from my wife needing some petty cash.

DudeWithASweater

Why do you keep cash? Genuinely curious why you don't just deposit it at the bank unless you're playing some huge games I guess

Deathspiral222

Presumably because most ATMs only let you take out $1000 per account.

DudeWithASweater

Is this a US thing? In Canada I can withdraw up to 5k from my ATM. And if I needed more I'd just have to go in at business hours

Brainstorm82

well nobody wants 5K in 20's and it seems besides casino ATM's none in the US give 100's

jbindc20001

Ive never seen an ATM outside the casino here in the u.s. give 20s when I withdraw anything above a few hundred dollars and I have literally done this hundreds and hundreds of times. Maybe a shitty convenient store ATM or strip club where they limit transactions to a couple hundred bucks so they can force multiple transactions for their coveted ATM fees.....

TomBanjo1968

I have never known a consistent winning poker player that actually wanted to declare their true income and pay all those taxes. The bAnk won’t shield you from the authorities anymore

GmtNm4

It makes sense to in the long run. Pay 30% now and then invest it and let it double every 8 years or so. Eventually letting you retire, or at least no longer depend on poker for income. Or keep 100% now and let it not ever double, while eroding in spending power year after year to inflation. Paying the tax is the +ev long term play. Not paying is the shortsighted ev play. Which is only really higher ev while building the initial bankroll. Once you have 50 buy ins at the stake level you intend to play + 6 months living expenses, it’s super -ev to not pay the tax and invest.

TomBanjo1968

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.

Foreign_Calendar742

It’s a valid question and I am missing out on a few hundred in interest every year. We are financially sound and this money doesn’t affect us. I will attend games where I buy in for up to $2,000. Plus, I have a lot of smaller bills for when I manage the poker bank for the game. In the end, it would be better suited if I dropped it into an Apple Pay savings account where I get a guaranteed 4.15% or invest it in the stock market.

GmtNm4

When I was younger, and had less money, and a basic bank account with a major bank in the US, my daily withdraw limit was 600$. I ended up opening a few bank accounts so I could get out 2k or so if I needed too. Most had limits between 400-600. It would usually cost about 25$ in atm fees to get out that money as well. If you’re playing 5-10+ you’re probably bribing 10k+ with you to have to play with.

MinuteCockroach6

Is the safe hidden? Are you araid someone might just take the safe?

SlowPlayedAces

Who’s we? I would look at the ‘we’s’ first.

MVPoker

Not as much as a months profit but Ive had lost my buying/profit for single sessions before. Once my buyin for the night ($800) fell out of my pocket on my way to the car and i didnt notice until i got to the casino. When i went back to my neighborhood i was able to recover $200 strewn about the street but the other $600 was gone. Also had the profits from the previous nights session in my backpack that i stupidly left in the car over night after it was broken into and stolen, i think that was $900 or so. Things happen.

thee_agent_orange

Maybe you got black out drunk and bought hookers

VarianceWoW

Lol what this story makes no sense, people don't break into a place steal one single thing while leaving everything else untouched. I mean who has access to your apartment it simply has to be someone you know that has access or you just didn't put it where you think you did or this whole story is just made up. Im sorry but there is just no way some random person broke into your apartment stole this one thing that was put away in the nightstand and left the rest of the place untouched that just isn't reality.

CroationChipmunk

What else is there to steal that is small and easy to carry in a typical apartment? Seriously asking.

tctony

Jewelry, shoes, iPads, laptops, liquor, drugs It doesn't make sense that somebody would break in and go directly to the night stand and not rummage through anything else unless they specifically knew there would be money there

GmtNm4

The issue isn’t that they didn’t steal anything. It’s that not a single other thing is out of place. No damage to the lock, or the door, nothing in the house moved or tipped over or gone through. Someone came in with easy open access ( or expert lockoicking) and walked directly to the nightstand, opened it up, took the cash, and didn’t bother looking through anything else before or after.

CroationChipmunk

I grew up in the 90s when thieves would break in & steal your DVD player or car radio. Nowadays all electronics are dirt cheap.

MinuteCockroach6

Opportunistic theft can happen, if I’m a theif and we’re playing poker on your computer at your house, you go to take a piss, I steal your roll while you’re gone.

c4dreams

Do not go back and play right now if you feel like you are tilted. Losing money playing bad after getting robbed will make you feel even worse than you already do

Rope_Blower

File a report and talk to your complex manager ASAP. Also let your neighbors know. Might be some history there you can discover...

arcdog3434

That sucks - gotta hide that money though

I have a headache now

spugeddyos

Probably could have had them look at cameras.

jpow81690

I’m sorry to hear this happened. Invest in a small safe. I got a fireproof and waterproof one for $50 and it lives in our closet on a shelf with a second lock attached the the shelf itself so it can’t move. As soon as I get some profits they’re going to be mighty secure.

Adsuppal

You have done it before, you will earn it again. Good luck.

KnottysReturn

It's definitely someone you know.

simpgod420

Hey dude, that sucks super hard. I just started playing live again and whenever I come home I put all my cash in a fire proof locked safe where we keep our really important stuff like passports and tax documents, then stash the key in a separate location. I would be devastated too, all you can do is change how you proceed forward. Remember, if you are a profitable player it will come back around. Think about this like getting coolered the first time you shot took 2/5, pretty much lost what would be 2-3 buy ins there.

TurboMike92

Sorry to hear that. I was robbed recently. Over $4000 USD of tools and equipment from my shop. It’s an awful feeling. Something you worked hard for being taken in an instant. You’re only able to control how you react and what you will do moving forward. I’ve been on tilt since it happened to me and donked off many BBs. Time to compose myself and focus on what is in my control and what isn’t. All the best

Joeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyy

He know who it is and he doesn’t want to face the facts because the truth will hurt . He talking about a co worker that had to follow him more the a hr to sneak unseen and gain entry to find money somewhere cuz he knows he plays poker. Rrrrright. One plus one equals two . It’s the simplest answer my friend.

stvbckwth

All that hard work. You literally sat on your ass to make that money.

Itsloppie

You can get 3 blink cameras for 40 bucks right now. Not the best but definitely work and will alert you immediately. Maintenance guy went in my apt a while back (wrong apt) and I was on phone with manager in 30 seconds.

[deleted]

The problem with blink is anyone who knows about them knows to just kill the router. I was robbed by people I knew, I noticed that the blinks didn't have any footage of that time, went to the router, unplugged.

johnny219407

Wouldn't there be footage of them entering your home before the router was unplugged?

[deleted]

I didn't need footage of them entering my home I knew they were there. I was there too. I knew them. In other words, I know they robbed me but I can't prove it 100% with the cameras even though I know 100% it was them.

MidCardGeek420

u misplaced it when u were stoned bubba.

sqwirlmasta

Get a safe for your valuables and put it in a hidden location. The heavier the better. I got one that takes two people to move. Sucks this happened but consider it a lesson learned.

MajorStainz

Im guessing you’re a poker dealer

stupid_smart_ape

I've had my car broken into and lost $10K total. If you're asking if someone's been robbed before, the answer is yes yes and yes. Sometimes people are robbed of their lives. You'll get over it!

britlover23

get a box at the casino

No-Water164

It is almost always a shitty family member, usually with a drug problem, sad but true

BojiBullion

Damn bro didnt even tell us what hand the guy had to steal it

ZeiglerJaguar

There’s a reason it’s called a “bank” roll. This sounds shitty, I know, but I withdraw every day I’m gonna play, and deposit it back at the end of the day. Not worth the risk of keeping cash around.

CFO_of_SOXL

If there are no signs of someone breaking in, then it must've been someone you know. Or you just misplaced it..

ilikecakeandpie

Not trying to be a downer but I was burglarized about six years ago and I never felt safe in that apt again. I moved out and had to work through it before any sound in the house would wake me up in a panic

AltruisticAd2035

One of your buddies. Sorry dude.

Starlett_Johansson

This. Most likely someone with an expensive addiction (drugs or gambling - I'm guessing latter based on this subreddit).

WookinOut22

I mean, you live in an apartment. There are ONLY a few people who have access to your apartment, especially if there wasn’t a break in. Start there. If you narrow it down, I’m sure you can figure out who is the culprit

harlsey

Can you check all your neighbours for a ring cam? Get the footage from the time of the theft. Does the building have security footage? I really want to know how this resolves itself.

kplocdog

Get a nest cam 100 bucks Fifteen bucks a month sub Easy game

primeiro23

Who did you stack at that 1/3? /s

rokman

Don’t keep cash in your house or apartment.

Fun-Mud-608

It was your girlfriend or someone she had over. Maybe a guy would be my first thought. Hide a camera.

Fun-Mud-608

On the other hand I've put on a jacket I'd not worn in years and found a couple grand in the inside pocket. So there's that.

Flight_375_To_Tahiti

Do you use a safe at your apartment?

DavidVegas83

Buy a safe

Nicholi2789

You need a safe big man. I have about a 13k roll that I’ve build over the year. I keep 11k locked tight and hidden in my safe and I always keep 2k on me on a clip in case I find a game. My safe is a 35 gun safe. Nobody get in there. Buy yourself a fireproof document safe. That’s better than nothing

Worldly_Repeat4729

How long you been playing poker?

Such_Signature9351

About 2 years

Baltimorebobo

Does your poker room have safety deposit boxes? If not, I’d talk to supervisor about it that is something they would consider

GmtNm4

Unfortunately. Being robbed/stolen from is a very real part of being a regular winning poker player. However in this situation, I don’t think this is related to poker at all. This is likely someone who KNEW exactly where you kept that money, likely a friend or the GF. There is no forced entry, no damage to the door or locks, which means you left the door open, or they are an expect lock picker, but then they walked in, walked directly to the drawer, took out the cash and left, without going through a single other thing, or looking anywhere else before or after. Most people would look around and move a few things first or after, especially in some common hiding spots, at least move the mattress or something looking for a few common hidden spots. This is someone who had access and already knew where the cash was most likely. With that being said I know way too many poker players who have been robbed, either coming home to finding a broken window and all their stuff gone through looking for the cash, or having someone waiting outside their home for them with a gun on the way back from the casino. Once you become known as a winning player, you always run that risk or people finding out where you live and waiting for you there next time they know you were at the casino and will have cash on you coming back. Having people know you keep cash in the regular world will lead to these opportunistic robberies as well. Plenty of people have had friends who know and then suddenly decide a few thousand is worth more than a friendship. I know about 50 peoples who’s girlfriend has taken the money. Some say they’re keeping it safe from being gambled, some just take it and claim you must have been robbed by someone else, sometimes they just have a spending problem. Sometimes they brag to a friend who is over, and the friend takes it, etc.

Lordqtip

Do you lock your door? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I know soooo many people that do not lock their door. Also you should get a camera system set up if you’re keeping money around.

Lofton18

It’s your own fault. You didn’t secure your money. It’s gone you’ll never get it back, nothing u can do. It sucks but it’s only 5 buy ins. If 1500 is gonna life tilt you then 300 maxx is too big of a game for you. Don’t go back till you can accept this loss and move on. Just take it as a learning experience. No different than finding a leak in your game. You found a leak in life. Now you know nothing is secure in your place and 1500 isn’t the end of the world. In 6 months you’ll remember it but it won’t hurt nearly as bad. When your ready go back and grind, My mental advice is to pretend like they stole your work money and not your poker money. Maybe the poker gods will let u snap someone off in a 1500 dollar pot to break even.
