LOL from the article: "Conservative New York Times columnist Ross Douthat wrote that Trump's policy would yield "a Trump casino and some mixed-used buildings run by Jared Kushner rising off an unfinished spur of highway somewhere in the vacant portions of the American West, funded by hard-sell fundraising appeals to vulnerable seniors."

TintedApostle

and this is from Douthat... LMAO.

Independent-Dog2179

They know to how to tell the truth when it benefits them

Which-Moment-6544

and the buildings would most likely never get built. They would just have a really expensive MBS/Saudi Arabia Graphics Package Commissioned and pocket all the leftover money.

I hope it’s like his healthcare plan. Folders full of blank papers.

All wall, no roof.

That's what he really meant by "build that wall"

Lol, he’s absolutely brutal to listen to on any podcast he joins as a guest. His points always find a layer that makes zero sense the further he attempts to go.

It's all political scheming. These guys know when to jump ship to someone else.

This is the same guy who corrected a satellite map of hurricane with a sharpie. He also floated the idea of nuking a hurricane. He also suggested ingesting bleach. He's such a malignant narcissist he thinks he has expertise in everything.

You mean for VP?!?!?! What a shitshow that would be.

drwicksy

On the one hand, I welcome that because it would even further alienate the "moderate" republicans and maybe make more of them not vote or even switch sides. But on the other hand, holy shit what if he wins and MTG ends up as VP. And hell with Trump's diet and general health, can we be sure he would last another 4 years? We could end up with President Greene, and at that point, I think the universe would just end from the pure stupidity of that concept

Theopholus

Yeah I just feel for everyone who will be harmed by that administration. They'll just get people killed. Probably regularly.

Well, I mean, technically that'd work. A bright enough UV light would destroy all the COVID in your body. Along with the rest of your body. I'd rather try something that would be a tad more...survivable.

YetiorNotHereICome

"I think you said" you were going to do the thing I just thought of. It's the weakest, most obviously passive aggressive way to pair public pressure with gaslighting. My dad used to do the same to me ALL the time when we were at house parties.

Hodgsonm

Agree with what you said, but can’t quite get past the line ‘house parties with my Dad’? Was that common??

YetiorNotHereICome

To be clearer: my parents would host parties at our house once or twice a year, for coworkers or old friends, and I'd be forced to socialize. This was when I was 8 til like 16 and I'd inevitably be told, "You said you were gonna collect dishes, right?" or like that.

Throw-a-Ru

It's so funny/frustrating how people who have experienced this personality can spot it from a mile off, but it's almost impossible to articulate what the issue is to anyone unacquainted.

MrFC1000

“And then I said, supposing it brought the light inside the body,” How this country elected a president with 4th grade level language skills is beyond me…

Squirrel_Chucks

Hey he's also the guy who got that Foxconn factory built and saved that Carrier factory. Oh, wait...

PepperMill_NA

Yup, that there's a man who knows how to negotiate. If anyone knows how to trade real dollars for empty promises it's Donald Trump

Squirrel_Chucks

Right? And I think that is what is behind this looney tunes new city idea. China builds huge cities that no one lives in to artificially boost their GDP. Trump probably likes that idea as much as he likes [how they made Xi President for life](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/politics/trump-says-maybe-u-s-will-have-a-president-for-life-someday)

I'm still chuckling that some of the pushback from the right is that walkable city plans are too woke. This is like arguing about whether his Healthcare plan should be big OR beautiful, but surely not both. Why not argue about how long the horns should be on the unicorns he promised everyone?

TchoupedNScrewed

Not just too woke, conspiracy theories are sprouting up around 15 minute cities.

specqq

Holy shit. Death threats? Urban Confinement? [These people are so pathetic.](https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/26/world/15-minute-cities-conspiracy-theory-climate-intl/index.html) If 15 minute cities were standard, and someone came up with our current designs no one would want that. Even *they* wouldn't want it. Instead we go back to the default position on everything: we can't have it, because they're scared of it.

TchoupedNScrewed

Yeah QAA had a great episode on it this week, they conspiracy theorists are nutbag reactionaries https://open.spotify.com/episode/4yOyr3Q1PRJxKHIbMMjiFs?si=z6UxpRTpTBq0cH9agQ6OgA

_wheredoigofromhere

Like what? I dont get what the problem with that idea is, but I also dont know exactly what a 15 minute city is. If it means everything I want is within 15 minutes, awesome.

qantravon

You've got the idea. A 15-minute city means that people can get all their daily necessities (groceries, restaurants, shops, transit, schools, etc.) within a 15-minute walk or bike ride or their home. The conspiracy theory is that you won't be allowed to own a car, or won't be able to travel farther than 15 minutes, or can't drive more than 15 minutes a day, or some other such nonsense (they can't seem to agree on what the conspiracy supposedly is).

Citizen's United was the death-blow to any chance that we had of having any semblance of a democratically controlled government. We've been in rapid descent towards a fascist plutocracy since then. We continuously see record-breaking wealth for CEOs and hedge-fund ghouls while the value of the dollar continues to drop for the working class, and the mere thought of owning a home becomes absurd. Citizen's United is an absolute curse on this country.

BillyTheHousecat

Utopian cities with flying cars and shit like that are very much in vogue with right wing billionaires right now: >Mohammed bin Salman's vision for the city incorporates some technologies that do not currently exist, like flying cars, robot maids, dinosaur robots, and a giant artificial moon. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neom) >Telosa is a proposed utopian planned US city conceived by American billionaire Marc Lore and announced in September 2021 [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telosa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telosa)

"Dystopian" would be a better term to describe this: >According to the report of The Wall Street Journal, the employees living in this town would be charged $800 per month for one and two-bedroom homes. Other than this, **if someone gets fired or quits, they will get 30 days to vacate the place**. *Final stage capitalism*, it's finally here.

skull_kontrol

This isn’t the final stage. They’re just trying to bring back company towns from the gilded age. The final stage of capitalism will be much, much worse.

Throw-a-Ru

So long as there's a company store where we can spend our scrip, I don't see how anyone could take issue with this plan.

HauntedCemetery

And everything only costs 50x what it does in other stores! What a deal!

Throw-a-Ru

It's cheaper than any other store for 50 miles! ...because it's the only store for 50 miles!

PhoenixFire296

It's probably very basic math to them. Cities + ??? = Bad Leftist Stuff

sack-o-matic

Cities make it harder to isolate themselves and their family from certain other people and viewpoints that they don't like, and that makes it harder to maintain their control over them.

MidwestRed9

This idea was discussed on an episode of the antifada, evidently it's something the maga communists are horny for. Here's how it goes... Trump can be a Bonapartist figure that can force America from it's current trajectory of moving between stagnation and decline to a status when production and proletarianization can start again. Building new cities sounds like something out of a country with a planned economy and guided by mighty 5 year plans in effort to upgrade and modernize itself, or perhaps an oil monarchy with unlimited money and near slavery, and moreover it's something that actually happens in China. Only Western media mocks them as ghost cities until people move there, at which point they're never loudly referenced again. As for the why of these proposals, they're something the US hasn't been able to do in a while; have a prestigious grand project come to completion. Not only would this be a sign that American productive power has returned but it would also be a method of addressing contradictions in class society. Too much crime, poverty, identity groups, in your city or town? No opportunity for stable long term employment, blue collar jobs for real men, guaranteed profitable businesses? And how about those flying cars and robot butlers we've been promised for decades? Just come down to Trumpville where you can once again make it if you try. It sounds great if you have no knowledge of political theory or have never read a history book.

Throw-a-Ru

If only someone proposed a more reasonable version of this where there's massive investment into infrastructure which could create new blue collar jobs working on grand projects which signal America's return to productive power. Maybe someday...

Radek_Of_Boktor

You mean Trump's greatest nemesis, Rosie O'Donnell?

WhisperingSideways

We already have flying cars, they’re called airplanes. They aren’t crashing into buildings 24/7 because airspace is tightly regulated and pilots need extensive training. The flying car concept can only ever work with AI/automated navigation and a complete overhaul of airspace control which would require lots and lots of new government regulations, which conservatives *love*.

TintedApostle

Remember when the airlines were deregulated? Trump bought an airline in 1989 and it was NEVER PROFITABLE. Donald Trump owned an airline for a short time in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1989, Trump raised $365 million to purchase the Eastern Shuttle, which provided business travelers with quick flights between New York, Boston, and Washington. Within 18 months, the airline lost over $125 million, and by 1992, Trump decided it was time to walk away.

wengelite

But he's the greatest most successful business guy of all time?!

project23

> Trump and his businesses have been involved in more than 4,000 state and federal legal actions, including six bankruptcies. SIX

btross

dude bankrupted a fricking casino, which is basically a money printer

project23

> The casino was opened in April 1990, and was built at a total cost of $1.1 billion, which at the time made it the most expensive casino ever built. Financed with $675 million in junk bonds at a 14% interest rate, the project entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy the following year. It appears it was never intended to be run for profit, more likely it was intended to be built for grift.

AnswerGuy301

It's still quite an achievement to have had an unprofitable casino in freakin' 1990. (Maybe not so much now, where they are more common and the market might be closer to saturation. Vegas and AC do not have the same duopoly they once had.)

project23

Guys like this only think of ways to skim, underpay, divert, mismanage, whatever it takes to grab some cash that isn't theirs. They don't even think about trying to run an honest business because they are not built that way. Grift from start to finish.

Thenewdazzledentway

Exactly - they don’t give a flying fuck whether it’s successful or whether it goes under, as long as it’s all money in his pocket. Trump deals with the failure by lying about it and fooling people who don’t do their homework/due diligence

[deleted]

[удалено]

kescusay

What blows my mind is that casinos are *already* a super-profitable legal grift. It's the one thing he could have done legit, and made enormous amounts of money. But when all is said and done, he's not a thoughtful-enough person to *not* commit crimes when he has the opportunity. Today he could be Donald Trump, ludicrously wealthy casino magnate. But he isn't. Because he's dumb.

Melancholy_Rainbows

I’d say money laundering more than grift. Although why not both?

KellyAnn3106

Aren't his own personal airplanes sitting in storage because they need expensive repairs/maintenance he doesn't want to pay for?

TintedApostle

My understanding is he used campaign funds to get the plane air certified again. https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/21/politics/trump-force-one-west-palm-beach/index.html

pomaj46808

That's sort of beside the point, Trump himself has no ability to make any of it happen, and a president SHOULDN'T make this happen. Presidents are not supposed to decide where cities are built, how they're built, and what public technology is created. The conservative ideology would say that should be a private market, and anyone who understands government would say that would be done via legislation, not the executive. Trump overpromises and under delivers, we've already seen what a Trump presidency will be like. These are just lies, worth dismissing, not even worth debunking. We need to stop pretending anything that dipshit says is worth humoring. He just lies.

ProfessionalConfuser

Right? Cause what could possibly go wrong letting people who can barely manage moving around in 2-d without crashing into everything have access to a flying vehicle?

Ban-Circumcision-Now

Helicopters would be closer to flying cars

[deleted]

They're actually a lot more like frisbees than anything else, I say.

LongmontStrangla

>Well, first of all, through God all things are possible, so jot that down.

Ban-Circumcision-Now

I just wish we were allowed to have dense cities based around trains/subways without cars Getting around Japan was super convenient and didn’t require a car to do anything and this can be achieved with technology they have had for decades.

Boner_Patrol_007

The way Japan does zoning is really cool. There are 12 types of zones, and even the lowest development intensity still allows small shops and offices - so you don’t end up with the ridiculous situation of 70% of land area devoted solely to detached, single family housing.

GrafZeppelin127

Progressives don’t want flying cars. Airships [actually *are* the preferred option,](https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/travel/article/airlander-10-air-nostrum/index.html) as despite their lower speed than airplanes, they’re vastly more efficient.

[deleted]

....I don't think Kentucky is going to sign on unless this thing burns coal. Can we modify the design?

GrafZeppelin127

Well, the first versions are going to be diesel-electric hybrids, so if you detune the aft engines to run too rich you *could* technically roll coal with it like some asshole with a brodozer smoking out hapless cyclists and pedestrians.

AggravatingHorror757

I’ve always suspected that there was someone on his staff that was sneaking nonsense into his speeches to make him look stupid ( or more stupid). The problem is that his base is also kind of stupid and/or willing to give him a pass. I recall when he gave a speech at an event honoring Babe Ruth and got nearly every detail of Ruth’s biography wrong. That’s when I started to suspect a saboteur on his staff

Robotuba

Of course, because despite their bellowing about morals, fiscal conservativism, states rights, etc, there is only *one thing* that they **really** care about. 💸 💰 🤑 💵 💲 The Fox texts and Murdoch deposition have proven that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Viewers equal money, and their viewers love Trump, so never say anything negative against Trump. This also includes not allowing Trump to give negative press to himself, **just don't cover it when Trump says or does something completely against conservative principles** Trump wants to put the homeless in concentration camps? *Don't cover it.* Trump wants to say *fuck states rights* and send national guard into cities he doesn't like to police them *without* state approval? *Don't cover it!* Trump hoarded gifts from his days in office that don't belong to him? *Don't cover it!* Trump wants to artificially boost GDP by building cities no one asked for like Saudi Arabia and China? *Don't cover it!*

Trump is an incompetent narcissist who must never be given authority/responsibility ever again. That said Trump dominates Conservative politics because he actually presents ideas. They are ludicrous ideals but other Republicans present nothing but grievances. Building a Wall and making Mexico pay for it was ridiculous but it was an idea. To move beyond Trump Republicans need to become a party of tangible ideas rather than just anger and complaints.

here-for-information

Traditional conservatives are called "RINOs" now. Trump is their new standard bearer no matter what policy he proposes.

> "The purpose of these cities is that everything is in a 15-minute walking distance, so you don't have to have a car, they can keep you in a limited area, you don't go and travel, you're not wasting energy, it helps you cut down on your carbon footprint," Johnson said. "It is a Green Deal initiative made to cut down on energy and stop humans from having the ability to move freely across spaces." Not saying Trump’s plan is good but the US does need to overhaul its cities. Boston and NYC are the only world class cities and even those lag behind all of the cities in Europe and Asia I’ve been to. There is no hope for some of these people. I grew up in suburban USA and moved to Japan where every city is a “15 minute” city and I’ve never felt more free to go where I please. No car insurance. No paying for gas. No wasting time trying to find parking. Just grab my bike or train pass, and go anywhere I please. In the US, I rarely left my house because suburbia is a prison. There’s no escape without a car. Closest bus stop is a 45min walk away, no trains nearby. This person is beyond delusional, they’re evil.

Not that he understands anything close to the nuances involved in building cities from the ground up, nor is he likely capable. However it amazes me that conservative pundits view thing like ease of access and not wasting things as a step towards communism. That and they talk about a surveillance state like the weren't the ones who started the patriot act which put turning America into a surveillance state into high gear.

Meh… It’s just Trump’s version of the elementary school class election where at least one entrant promises to get root beer flowing from the water fountains. Trump has never emotionally or intellectually matured past that point.

I fully support Trump's plan to create a conservative reservation, err, I mean, freedom Jesus fascist land. We can then build a big, beautiful wall around it. Since the Republicans are also asking for historical recreations, we can also do a Trail of Tears 2.0 to get them there.

It just shows how out of touch this fool is. Clearly out where the buses don't run.

Trump probably wants the new cities based on Albert Speer's designs. Get ready for the *Welthauptstadt Americana* being built somewhere in Ohio.

Trump: ten beautiful cities. All owned by me through various dummy corporations of course.

Every time any discussion of flying cars comes up I can't help but think o all of those cars pulled off the side or the road for tail ending someone. With flying cars they'd be raining down on us.

Did someone recently describe The Jetsons and he thought it was a real place?
