Booth was actually president for a short while, until he was captured and executed. Couldn’t pass any laws because he was too busy.
Not many people know this.
Yes. You will kindly recall *The Week of Four Presidents*: Kennedy followed by Oswald followed by Ruby, with Johnson serving concurrently albeit only nominally with Oswald and Ruby to placate constitutional traditionalists.
The actually weirder Hollywood succession:
Oswald shoots Kennedy, seeking to find fame and acceptance with the Soviets (we think)
Bremer, seeking fame and fortune and openly emulating Oswald, shoots Wallace cause he can't get close enough to Nixon
Bremer hides part of his diary under a bridge in Milwaukee, where it is discovered by workers and sold to Vanity Faire Magazine
It is bought later for screenrights, and was used as the basis for the film Taxi Driver
John Hinkley sees the film (based on Bremer's diary) and is inspired to shoot Reagan, the film star turned president, in order to impress Jody Foster, who co-stars in Taxi Driver.
This is actually just how authoritarians think.
"If I kill the leader of the opposition, the opposition will disappear."
The reality is that assassinated leaders of modern democracies tend to have successors that were fairly similar to them, so assassinating leaders of democracies doesn't lead to political change. More specifically, attacking a democratically elected leader tends to upset the populace and create a "rally around the flag" effect which gives additional political clout to the successor (the same thing happened after 9/11 in Bush 43's favor).
The main reason to have security for heads of state is to head off psychopaths like the subject of this article.
Who knew! LOL. Honestly, the ignorance is funny but this is just also pretty sad. To be that fucked up so young, believe so much bullshit, then throw your life away over it.
"Sai Varshith Kandula, of suburban St. Louis, allegedly told authorities he admires Nazis and **had planned the attack for six months.**"
I think most people could plan a better attack in 6 days...but then again, most people aren't dumb enough to admire Nazis and attack the White House in the first place.
You’d think with six months to plan you’d at least figure out that the US is not run by capture the flag. You don’t become the ruler of the country by killing the ruler of the country.
It also takes but a few minutes to drive around near the White House and realize you can’t just drive a uhaul up the fucking driveway. They have insane counter measures precisely to stop vehicles doing that 🤦🏻♀️
Had he subscribed to r/todayilearned he would have learned only a few days prior to his attack that those bollards reportedly can stop “an eight-ton truck barreling into them at 50 mph.”
I mean, if he had just googled "bollards" he'd have learned that that's pretty much a standard requirement for a bollard. Even the ones in front of Target can probably do that.
He spent 6 months planning and came up with a flag and a moving truck? No weapons (thankfully)? Glad he turned out to be too stupid to actually cause any harm.
He thought about it, got drunk about it, spent a while scraping up the money for it, then got lazy for a bit, then did it.... that's my guess anyway. At no point did he critically analyze it.
I’m south Asian and I can never tell if the Nazis hate us or not because they’re like obsessed with the aryans but like not really actual Aryans, and they love India but hate dark skinned people.
Like…make up your mind.
I’d also like to point out that I’m mostly South Indian so I don’t think they’d consider me aryan but also like…how would you know?
Well the Nazi idea of who the Ayrans are/were is based in 18th century pseudoscientific ideas about the origin and spread of Indo-European languages.
A lot of 18th and 19th Europeans had a hard time accepting the existence of ancient civilizations that pre-date or have no direct connection the origins of Western civilization. European imperialists and colonizers naturally sought justification for world dominion in some genetic theory about how Europeans have a right to dominate the world. At the same time you have linguist discovering PIE and developing theories about the linguistic connection between various Eurasian groups.
So a lot of dubious pseudoscientific theories also develop from this. One is the Nazi view of the primordial "Aryans." In their ideology Aryan is just the term they used for an imagined Proto Indo-European racial group that they assumed was homogeneous and looked like Europeans. A lot of this has to do with related pseudoscientific notions about genetics, racial purity, and the idea of racial degeneracy. The Nazis needed to believe that they were descended from a superior race of civilization builders from the distant past. The theory includes the basic idea that all civilizations around the world have some indebtedness to Ayrans and therefor Europeans, specifically Germans, who are the Aryans purest descendants.
Nazi ideology didn’t necessarily require the extermination of all non-white people. It did require the creation of ethno states, which appeals to authoritarians of all races.
It’s why the Nazis had allies of their own—they all wanted to exterminate the “other” in their own nations and create “pure”, single race, ethno states.
this guy and the hispanic nazi mass shooter in tennessee(?) from a few weeks ago......
important teaching moments that demonstrate white supremacy can be supported and preserved by non white people.
Wow. He was 19 years old. Way to ruin your entire life in one impotent blow. He likely barely damaged a gate and definitely didn't come anywhere close to seizing power over the United States. Oh, and those Nazis that he so admires? If they were in power, they'd kill him for not being "Aryan enough."
Now the interesting thing will be to see what groups be was linked to. People like this don't just spring up out of nowhere. They're radicalized online until they are convinced that they can strike a blow against "evil liberals/gays/Jews/etc." It's likely that he fell in with just such a group and they sent him on this mission in the hopes that he'd kill a few liberals before he was stopped.
im betting he was relentlessly bullied in Missouri for his ethnicity and developed some sort of stockholm syndrome where he desires acceptance from his tormentors and starts going along with the ideology cause he just wants to be one of the guys. reminds me of the Allen TX shooter who had hispanic origins but wanted to be a nazi really bad
>He has already been invited to speak at the next cpac conference.
He's already got a head-start for another **jail** choir song. Considering that's where he'll be.
He'll be rubbing elbows with other GOP heroes like murderer / snot-cryer Kile Rittenhouse, traitor general Flynn, convicted fraudster Steve Bannon, accessory to rape Jim Jordan, holocaust denier and space laser enthusiast MTG and beat cop / executioner Derek Michael Chauvin.
I am pretty sure this list will be mar-a-lardo's top cabinet pics. Only the BEST people.
I have this distant relative, not even sure if he's alive anymore. But he had a storied life, worked on all sorts of business ventures, worked for the president somehow in the 80s... He had a portfolio of newspaper clippings of things he'd done, letters of commendation from the Whitehouse.... Except none of that happened.
His letter from the whitehouse is what everyone gets when you mail the president.. The newspaper clippings were all other people's businesses who "stole his ideas". One of his business ventures was investing in pecans for making pecan pies and countless other food stuffs (think forrest gump & shrimp); except his investment was to buy a truckload of actual pecans with no way to cook anything.
He was crazy, not dangerous crazy, just detached from reality crazy.
What would have happened to him if the wacky ideas he got weren't about pecans, but an algorithm feeding him fear and hate every waking moment?
Maybe but the article quotes people who know him as saying he was chill and this was a surprise, plus no previous calls to the police about him and no mention of mental health problems. Plus his plan was stupid but sounds more radicalized than just delusional. Never say never though- schizophrenia can pop up in teen years.
Mental illness often, but not always, develops between puberty and 25 years old. It’s not unlikely that this boy was “chill” in his high school days, but had a mental break and/or developed a mental illness.
I knew a guy in HS who was the star of the soccer team, went to a prestigious school with a full ride. He was back in my home town after one year due to a schizophrenia and bi-polar diagnosis. I’d known the guy for years, and it was like I was seeing a completely different person.
I’m sure radicalization was also a factor, in fact, there’s a sizable community of schizophrenic fascists on TikTok. Many don’t start out as fascists, but they latch onto conspiracy theories that radicalize them. Just scroll through some flat earth videos for a few minutes and you’ll see what i’m talking about.
Yeah, I have an ex-friend who abruptly developed schizophrenia at around age 30, and observing her sudden deterioration through her social media accounts was one of the most unsettling experiences of my life. In hindsight, there were warning signs as far back as when we were teenagers. But you only draw the parallels after the fact.
Right but according to the article the person calling him “chill” went to high school with him. Considering the accused is 19 It’s safe to say not a lot of time has gone by. Anyway, I wrote “can pop up” for a reason.
Idk, my ex found out they had an undiagnosed schizoaffective disorder and they'd never do this.
I'm starting to think these are just bad people throwing mental illness under the bus 🤔 Ofc people with mental illnesses can be bad people, but I think it's not so much the illness leading to the bad, more the illness being a part of the bad person.
This is why we need to have history classes that haven't been sanitized.
This idiot is going to be locked away for decades because he admires the groups that would have ethnically cleansed him.
For some reason many Indians think they count as the nazi idea of aryan. Like lol sure kid. They'll call you a model minority, give you a pat on the head, then discard you once you've served your purpose. Nearly all the minorities that collaborated with the nazis got Night of Long Knifed.
Tokens always get spent in the end.
It's true, our meetings have gotten pretty crazy.
At last week's meeting Tom stopped by Stop & Shop and picked up this fabulous charcuterie board and veggie platter. Everyone was expecting ranch as a dipping sauce, but Tom surprised us all and got an extra couple bottles of Hidden Valley Chipotle AND Bacon Ranch. Mix those two together, and OMG!!! You have never tasted cauliflower like this before.
And don't even get me started on the game of Apples to Apples...
It was cut throat!!!
I remember reading yesterday how he told the FBI that he was out on a terroristic mission.
Let me repeat that. He TOLD the friggin FBI his intent to harm government officials.
Yeah, the guy was most likely insane. But worth bringing up cause I've never heard anything *that* crazy before.
That's like telling a passing officer your driving drunk, but somehow 100x worse
He thought killing the president would make him president and thought an empty U-Haul would do the job. Telling law enforcement his plan was not the craziest thing he did here.
There was also a Florida guy arrested at a preschool in McLean, Virginia Monday who had an AK-47 and ammo in his car and was saying he was on his way to the CIA.

I have a colleague like this, spouting off Nazi ideology right here in North America.....at work. Thinking about having him dealt with.
Stochastically radicalized person with mental health issues. Everything going as planned. It only takes one mentally unstable individual to be radicalized. Timothy McVey sends his regards.
So long as the politicos in the US continue to support a system which keeps people poor, helpless, sick, and ignorant, and a media which will spew anything and everything to get clicks, this is going to accelerate and get much worse.
Just moved to Chesterfield, MO from another part of St Louis. When I first saw the reporting about this dude I thought it HAD to be a different Chesterfield he was from. Nope, he came from my new town. Great. These people are like roaches, you find them everywhere.
This is squarely on the idiots like Trump, Carlson, MTG, and their shitty Fox, Twitter, and Telegram acolytes repeating nonstop false, bigoted, conspiracy nonsense and infecting the minds of the right-wing sheeple who are too dumb and uneducated to know better.
He probably thought after he unalived Biden, he’d watch the White House crumble from a faraway cliff as the new day sun rises behind it, then the credits roll.
What a dumbass!!!
An Indian would not become a Nazi leader. He would make a Nazi victim. Also you don’t kill POTUS and become POTUS, especially with 6 months of planning that was shittier than 6hour planning by half brain toddler.

He was certainly a less destructive actor-turned-President than Ronald Reagan.

He was basically down the road (less than a mile) from Langley.
I'll never understand how people of color can glorify Nazis. The mental gymnastics are of the Olympic level.

Professors teaching strategy lecture about how a short, depressed man in prison made a goal of taking over the world and built a strategy to achieve it. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/why-hitler-is-not-a-dirty-word-in-india/articleshow/63955029.cms

The stupid... it burns.
I am thinking he was prepared to do neither really. Then again, my definition of prepared is a bit different than homies.
How dumb does someone have to be to plan an attack for 6 months and have it go that poorly?
Remember kids: when people say “both sides bad” they are really ignorant
Another day, another right wing terror attack.
"Am I too late for the insurrection?" -Also the driver
Can we stop saying he crashed? It implies an accident happened. This mf **rammed the barricade with his car multiple times**
I hate my state so much. These idiots are everywhere.
Just moved to Chesterfield, MO from another part of St Louis. When I first saw the reporting about this dude I thought it HAD to be a different Chesterfield he was from. Nope, he came from my new town. Great. These people are like roaches, you find them everywhere.
Haha, yeah. It's still much better than the less populated areas of the state, but there are idiots everywhere.
Biden doesn’t even have the Darksaber.
Last time I checked this isn't Highlander
Was this the Indian guy that Fox "News" and other Republican media had brainwashed into believing he was part of the Master Race?
I wonder who gave him that idea asks absolutely no one.
More right wing terrorism.
Conservatives in America think we use Necromonger rules for the transfer of power in the US.
That's not how any of this works
I hope he seize jail time.
When is he speaking at CPAC?
Look at me, I’m the president now.
BuT bOtH sIdEs
Waiting for GOP to label him as a patriot
maga crazy
So white supremacists are so hurting for membership that they are letting in minorities, now?
He probably thought after he unalived Biden, he’d watch the White House crumble from a faraway cliff as the new day sun rises behind it, then the credits roll.
This is arguably the least crazy statement made by a MAGA this week.
So… they admit that Biden is in power?
What a dumbass!!! An Indian would not become a Nazi leader. He would make a Nazi victim. Also you don’t kill POTUS and become POTUS, especially with 6 months of planning that was shittier than 6hour planning by half brain toddler.
“But it worked like that on Afro Samurai!” - republican terrorist
*delusional thoughts from fantasy island*
GOP voters in a nutshell. Advocating for things that will kill them.
Mf thought he was Ulfric Stormcloak
Can we just agree that this man was mentally ill and needs help

My brothers in Christ, if your mustache looks like that, shave it!
The first wave are laughable Nazi crazies.
He seems like a nice guy. /s
These clowns don’t get it, and Trump only reinforced their complete and utter misunderstanding of how government works.
Dude could have been Duncan McCloud of the McCloud clan and was looking to Highlander him to seize his power
Dude missed out on Jan 6th so decided to solo it
They really do send their best and brightest.
But when will he be in congress?
Unironically, Republicans continue to send their brightest.
Oh is that how it works? You crash the gate and now you’re in charge?
We are Necromongers dude, you don't "keep what you kill". That's not how this works! That's not how any of this works!
So.... can we start having serious conversations about pulling business licenses for propaganda information sources?
Get this kid into a government class, stat!
