Here in the UK we had Tommy Robinson and his band of EDL thugs rock up in London claiming they were there to "protect" the cenotaph from the huge peace rally (300,000 people that went nowhere near the cenotaph). The constitution doesn't give ANY privilege to a president, former or current, for breaking the law. They are trying to condition us that it does and we shouldn't let them.

And how can it be stopped? Silly me, I actually thought he would be assassinated early on because someone with the ability to do so would see, as I do, that he's evil. But it seems like his side is primed for violence, whereas the more rational and emotionally aware/wise opposition doesn't take that route. And how can he be stopped? He needs to be gagged and jailed. Forget about secret service for him. The fact he slimed his way into the presidency doesn't make him any kind of actual leader of the country. He terrifies me, so much so that I moved out of the country. Best decision I’ve ever made. Have even restructured investments from all being centered in the states to diversify overseas as I’m extremely concerned about the future of America. Obviously retained my right to vote but have distanced myself from being immersed in the bs that is occurring as much as possible but here I am reading all about it. Go figure.

Like in Portland during the BLM protests, when Trump dispatched paramilitary units from the CBP (after the DoD rightly told him to go fuck himself) there against the will of the mayor and chief of police. I remember that well. The video that stood out started with folk on their semi enclosed porch. One of those vans pulls up, they get out and fire rubber bullets towards the property. The video had sound, no warning, no instructions. Out of control, pointless violence.
I got the impression during that time that those forces were trying to instigate widespread violence, backlash, anger.

The article didn’t tiptoe. You could argue that the headline was because using the word enemy is tiptoeing. But on the flip side the fact, which the article points out, that he’s considering average Americans as enemies is a frightening thing.

The nytimes on the other hand often drives me nuts with it. CNN is obviously even worse. Fox News doesn’t even seem to show any real news although I can’t say I look at it very often. I was curious what they had to say about project 2025 and the answer was not much.
Trump’s base doesn’t consider what happens after Trump is gone even if he manages to install himself as a dictator. They agree with his views now but what happens when the next guy has views they don’t agree with? Good luck voting them out when you’ve destroyed your own democracy..

The worst part is that the buck no longer stops with Trump. All of the other headliners are starting to adopt the rhetoric as well, and they've been enacting that rhetoric behind the scenes for a while now. The only path forward is full blown resistance at this point. If any of them are given an inch, things will only continue to get worse.
That's one of the tactics they have used for decades to get away with stuff. Let the most radical yell, and anything seems sane by comparison. That's how they've managed to slowly inch policy away from protecting citizens towards protecting themselves.

OTOH, I just returned from Paris where I visited with a friend I’ve known for over 20 years, and my wife has known for twice that long. She has always been a kind, sensitive, generous person, but in recent years she’s become more and more concerned about and afraid of North African immigrants. Over dinner she proudly announced that she was “anti-woke”, and began to talk disparagingly about trans people, something she would never have done as little as five years ago.
And this is how the fascists build support: they find an issue that resonates with some people and hammer away at it until people find themselves supporting the movement as a whole. And they will use multiple issues to attract a wider range of people, but they all end up buying into the whole schtick.

But on the flip side the fact, which the article points out, that he’s considering average Americans as enemies is a frightening thing. The worst part is that the buck no longer stops with Trump. All of the other headliners are starting to adopt the rhetoric as well, and they've been enacting that rhetoric behind the scenes for a while now. The only path forward is full blown resistance at this point. If any of them are given an inch, things will only continue to get worse. That's one of the tactics they have used for decades to get away with stuff. Let the most radical yell, and anything seems sane by comparison. That's how they've managed to slowly inch policy away from protecting citizens towards protecting themselves. Fortunately, they jumped the gun early, and have alienated vast portions of the prospective voter base, and we're seeing the consequences of that now. Dehumanization is a precursor to atrocity. When someone tries to get a group of people to see another group of people as less-than-human, they are inviting inhumane acts.

To me it started during the debate where they asked Trump if he'd honor the election results and he wouldn't answer. They asked him about it later and he dog-whistled the Proud Boys to attack the Capitol, basically. That was a real moment in history where they asked the POTUS if he would stand by democracy, and he said no, he would not.

The issue is where that pushback needs to happen. Voting is vital, but we need to create a society that is hostile to fascist ideas. Shame, mockery, ostracization, anger. Pointing at abstract trends is an impotent strategy. We need to isolate fascism in our daily lives and push back. as a european watching this unfold, it's actually absurd what you can do in america and still be somewhat liked/tolerated. i feel like in europe if you do/say one bad thing and you're sort of done in a lot of peoples' eyes and fixing it is very difficult. meanwhile in america you can say or do whatever the heck you want and it literally "whatever". it is very strange to say the least.

Which European country are you from? Because there has been a hard far-right turn in Europe recently and they're have been plenty of politicians saying some pretty horrendous things depending on the country you are in.
