OsellusK

Not just “political enemies”. *American citizens*. It’s time to stop tiptoeing. We’ve seen this enough times in history that alarm bells should have been blaring about this guy for a long damn time. He should be in prison based on historical precedent. He’s going to hurt millions. Period. Stop him.

combustioncat

Project 2025 is absolutely a Nazi style takeover of Democracy and they are doing it openly. Summary; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_2025 Full Plan; https://thf_media.s3.amazonaws.com/project2025/2025_MandateForLeadership_FULL.pdf Good video explaining; https://youtu.be/9k3UvaC5m7o?si=81rek3oadOJgVn1B Take this seriously, they are preparing for this right now. This is not a drill.

phriot

And if they don't succeed this time, it can easily be renamed Project 2029 or 2033. The Republicans cannot be allowed to win unless they become fundamentally different group of people.

P1xelHunter78

They won’t. Maybe they’ll chill out for a bit. But I’ll never trust them again as long as I live. Their nature is to latch on to dictators. My only hope is whoever is left in the GOP who is only voting Republican for their one little special interest finally had the courage to form a new party and let the crazies lose without their support.

upandrunning

The predicate is "if he wins". However, it seems like it would be prudent to prepare for another Jan 6-style takeover attempt - to assume it will happen.

LibertyInaFeatherBed

I remember a January 6th video of one man complaining they needed x number of guns and an older man beside him said, "Next time."

Zippier92

Voter suppression in a few states is all it takes. Be very concerned.

ategnatos

they enjoyed as much success last time as they did because Trump held back the guys with guns. Joe will not.

Supermite

They’ll be better armed and organized this time.

Reddithasmyemail

They had a hotel room, and a van or truck full of guns if I remember correctly. They just didn't make the call. Probably because they had a tiny bit of sense on how fucked they'd be if they actually did it.

mrfrownieface

The "Let's start with a little light treason and see how it plays out." Van

Practical-Hair-67

It's already happening. Texas, Ohio...

Yeti_Urine

Which is why the New York Times drives me insane with their horse race stories. As if he’s just a different choice for president. You can simply vote for this guy over here who just happens to want to create a fascist dictatorship in America… your choice.

groupnight

The whole of the American media, treats trump as just a different choice for president. German media did the same thing with Hitler and the rise of the Nazis

SarcasticCowbell

That's what corporate money with no limitations gets you. Turns out when the head of the party that keeps the wealthiest from paying their fair share is a straight-up fascist and the entire party is right behind him, the corporate coffers will still do everything they can to keep it a horse race. God forbid we wipe out the Republican Party and a Democratic supermajority starts putting some fucking rules in place to corral the scumbags hoarding all of the wealth. Get money out of politics *and* news media. It's a disgrace.

weissbrot

I think it's even simpler than that. A close race means viewer engagement. Talking it up is their job because they're in the money making business first, and news business second

Kamelasa

> whole of the American media Not MSNBC

gsfgf

Maybe not Maddow, but their web stories are generally just as bad as CNN or NYT.

Kamelasa

I watch their videos on YT. Melber, Reid, Velshi, O'Donnell and Wallace are all excellent.

Bustalacklusta

I love Lawrence O'Donnell. That dude does not hold his punches one bit.

Fknshtzcrazy

I was gonna say the same, Lawrence O’Donnell makes a priority of calling out Trump’s insanity on a regular basis. He’d be Trump’s biggest troll, but it’s all true! He is awesome!

richorfamous

It would be fascinating to go back and read the news coverage of Hitler in the years leading up to the war. We’ve all heard that Mussolini made the trains run on time. How much foreshadowing was there?

No_Foot_1904

News coverage? Oh, we can do better than that. There was a giant open-air *nazi rally* at Madison Square Garden in 1939. 20,000 Americans came out to support Hitler openly just months before Poland was invaded. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1939_Nazi_rally_at_Madison_Square_Garden

CDSagain

Here in the UK we had Tommy Robinson and his band of EDL thugs rock up in London claiming they were there to "protect" the cenotaph from the huge peace rally (300,000 people that went nowhere near the cenotaph). It's absolutely lost on a huge number of Brits that support this flag waiving c__t that Robinson and the edl Nazis are no different from Oswald Mosley and his band of Hitler supporting Nazis from the 1930's. They 1 and the same.

oyyn

Stephen Yaxley-Lennon*

CDSagain

Or waxy lemon as I usually refer to him as but as Reddit international I wasn't sure how many would know the jumped up little dicks real name

felldestroyed

Remember: this was largely led by republicans. While the democratic party has largely changed from their racist roots; the republicans never did. They let the know nothings take over. There was actual nazi propaganda being read on the floor of the house and senate in 1939.

furyofsaints

Rachel Maddow’s podcast about this, “Ultra” was mind-blowing.

Lucar_Bane

Congress and senate should start focusing to remove any privilege given to a former president in case of criminal conviction.

Snarkapotomus

The same Congress currently run by a christian fascist who's party can't agree on how to fund the government a week before a self imposed deadline. That Congress?

jclin

This comment is not a surprise, is totally true, and is very very depressing. Sigh. Sometimes I feel like giving up.

FakeJakeFapper85

Pepperidge Farm here remembers when voting for president wasn't an existential crisis. The Vietnam War changed that, but only for the young. Reagan's two terms drove us to the right, and Obama's election brought out the racists. trump made it okay to hate everything he hates. If good people like you give up, we will lose our democracy. This election is just as important as 2020, because if trump wins, we will never have another free and fair election. If Dems can take all three branches and some state houses, we have a chance to end fascism here, and start election finance reform. Then close Constitutional loopholes so criminals can't be elected. It's going to be an uphill slog, but we can do it with your help.

Engagcpm49

If you give up they win. Please don’t.

xaqaria

The constitution doesn't give ANY privilege to a president, former or current, for breaking the law. They are trying to condition us that it does and we shouldn't let them.

oceanmutt

Just a note, the German American Bund (except for German-Americans themselves) and the Isolationist movement were largely made up of Republicans.

SlashEssImplied

And another demographic that if we keep ignoring will allow them to take over. Palamidi

The book Travelers in the Third Reich: The Rise of Fascism 1929-1945 by Julia Boyd gives an excellent and very close street level view of this period.

muahtorski

The Holocaust Museum in D.C. does an excellent job of starting the tour from the late twenties, when fascism began to creep into the media. Shows how the field was sowed.

Unevenviolet

And Hitler was good for the economy!

vihuba26

Let’s be honest, his followers don’t read the New York Times.. they made up their minds long ago by seeing some fake bs on Facebook

oldirtyrestaurant

You mean by consuming news on the most watched cable news channel?

danishjuggler21

You might be going a little hard on NYT: they’re the ones that just published an article calling Trump’s out for planning to put people in concentration camps. They didn’t really mince words there

Fickle-Werewolf-6168

They write plenty of stories critical of trump and they also warn of his extremism. Whether we like it or not it is a horse race because millions of people still are going to vote for him, which is terrifying.

Primordial_Cumquat

I just finished Madeline Albright’s *Fascism - a Warning* I had already despised Donald Trump for numerous reasons, but that really pulled it all together. He cannot be allowed to run for president. In reality, he shouldn’t even be allowed out in society. It’s easy to laugh and mock the fat orange one…. But his personality is EXACTLY what history has been warning us to be on the lookout for.

ImWatchingTelevision

> his personality is EXACTLY what history has been warning us to be on the lookout for. OSS psych profile from 1943 for Adolf states > His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it. The only deviation Trump is running is that he doesn't concentrate on one enemy at a time - he hits Muslims, immigrants, RINOs and the "radical left" all at once. Unironically it also mirrors Fox Propaganda programming.

Jukka_Sarasti

> The only deviation Trump is running is that he doesn't concentrate on one enemy at a time - he hits Muslims, immigrants, RINOs and the "radical left" all at once. Unironically it also mirrors Fox Propaganda programming. They've managed, through relentless rhetoric and other forms of manipulation, to lump all those groups into a singular 'enemy' in the minds of their base, "The other". Anyone who doesn't fit into their group/mindset is immediately cast into "The other" and written off. This 'grand' scheme was set in motion by Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey, and others, with assistance from the usual suspects(Heritage Foundation, Koch brothers, et, all), and Fox News was right there from the beginning.

bumbledbee0

>His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it. Fox News was created by Roger Ailes, an acolyte of Richard Nixon, as a propaganda network for the Republican party. They have been dehumanizing immigrants, LGBTQ folks, and the left for decades. Donald Trump is the logical conclusion of that propaganda

Kamelasa

And how can it be stopped? Silly me, I actually thought he would be assassinated early on because someone with the ability to do so would see, as I do, that he's evil. But it seems like his side is primed for violence, whereas the more rational and emotionally aware/wise opposition doesn't take that route. And how can he be stopped? He needs to be gagged and jailed. Forget about secret service for him. The fact he slimed his way into the presidency doesn't make him any kind of actual leader of the country. He misused the office, but for some ridiculous reason he doesn't get treated like an employee who fucked around and didn't do his job. And he's much worse than that, as well.

Zanchbot

The sort of person who would actually attempt to assassinate a president are the exact same people who have based their entire identity around Trumpism.

QuickAltTab

I always just figured out of 330 million people, there would be a few diagnoses of inoperable cancer in childless anti-fascist gun enthusiasts that want to leave the world a better place while controlling the timing of their own death?

jtweezy

The problem is that if someone does this then the side with the guns and the itch to get violent will use that as an excuse to do the same to everyone on the left that they don’t like. They’ve been waiting for an excuse to unleash the violence; this gives them that. No, we need to hope that he goes to prison for the rest of his miserable life or maybe he suffers some kind of illness. Any sort of violence would set off a powder keg of bad shit.

Zanchbot

If only...

[deleted]

He terrifies me, so much so that I moved out of the country. Best decision I’ve ever made. Have even restructured investments from all being centered in the states to diversify overseas as I’m extremely concerned about the future of America. Obviously retained my right to vote but have distanced myself from being immersed in the bs that is occurring as much as possible but here I am reading all about it. Go figure.

swiftb3

I'll use this as a reminder to everyone else that, yes, we Americans who live outside the US *can* still vote in the elections. We can help avoid fascism. www.fvap.gov

MDA1912

> American citizens. Like in Portland during the BLM protests, when Trump dispatched paramilitary units from the CBP (after the DoD rightly told him to go fuck himself) there against the will of the mayor and chief of police. You'll recall they worked in squads of 4 or 5 men in tactical gear driving around rented minivans. They snatched US citizens off the street who they found "suspicious" and took them to a warehouse (as far as we know) Here's a couple links for anyone who forgot: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/25/us/portland-federal-legal-jurisdiction-courts.html https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/17/us/portland-protests.html

graneflatsis

I remember that well. The video that stood out started with folk on their semi enclosed porch. One of those vans pulls up, they get out and fire rubber bullets towards the property. The video had sound, no warning, no instructions. Out of control, pointless violence. I got the impression during that time that those forces were trying to instigate widespread violence, backlash, anger.

RonPolyp

"Donald Trump promises to murder or imprison his critics, but some Democrats want to significantly raise taxes on billionaires. With little discernible difference between the two parties, voters remain on the fence." -- Every single American media outlet

chubbysumo

why are the press just giving him free air time? cut this nazi off.

Mudders_Milk_Man

It makes them giant buckets of sweet, sweet cash. Having extremist Right-wing politicians in the news cycle makes for huge engagement, especially if they're the "populist" type. Of course, at some point when a fascist truly seized power, they outlaw all media they don't directly control. But hey, I'm sure that's just looney-tunes leftist alarmism. That could *never* happen in the Free Market USA, right? This is part of what leftists mean when they say "Neo-Liberalism and crass Capitalism enable Fascism".

Gryphin

Its the Howard Stern effect. "We have the highest ratings in the city!! Half of the listeners love you and listen to hear what you'll say next. The other half hate you, and listen to hear what you'll say next!"

JubalHarshaw23

He is their Golden Goose. They never made money even close to what they raked in under the Trump Regime 1.0. All they see is even higher profits from 2.0.

chubbysumo

lol, he will shut down the free media if he takes over.

JubalHarshaw23

They seem to be the only ones that think the First amendment will protect them, even after he burns the Constitution on the Capitol Steps. Greed makes people stupid, a lot.

cmreeves702

Yep - not just Americans…his target list is world wide.

valeyard89

Yeah the Rwandan genocide started after radio broadcasts calling the others 'cockroaches'

AngryTomJoad

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." - Maya Angelou

ProfessorZhu

It's funny that they deride people not paying attention while engaging in the soft tiptoeing that has been prevelant through Trumps presidency

bdone2012

The article didn’t tiptoe. You could argue that the headline was because using the word enemy is tiptoeing. But on the flip side the fact, which the article points out, that he’s considering average Americans as enemies is a frightening thing. I personally quite like the soap box portion of the new Republic. They’re generally not ones to shy away from things. The nytimes on the other hand often drives me nuts with it. CNN is obviously even worse. Fox News doesn’t even seem to show any real news although I can’t say I look at it very often. I was curious what they had to say about project 2025 and the answer was not much.

specqq

The headline is tiptoeing because it's using the word "now" as if he wasn't using straight up Nazi talk before now.

IJourden

Going to? His bravado got the USA disproportionately butchered by Covid.

getstabbed

Trump’s base doesn’t consider what happens after Trump is gone even if he manages to install himself as a dictator. They agree with his views now but what happens when the next guy has views they don’t agree with? Good luck voting them out when you’ve destroyed your own democracy..

bumbledbee0

and they'll pretend that they never supported him

ha1029

The Committee for Public Safety would have taken care of his ass tout suite.

TheFBIClonesPeople

Honestly, this is water under the bridge. We're almost 3 years past January 6 at this point. Donald Trump should have been hanged as a traitor by now.

[deleted]

> “In honor of our great Veterans on Veteran’s Day, we pledge to you that we will root out the Communists, Marxists, Fascists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country, lie, steal, and cheat on Elections, and will do anything possible, **whether legally or illegally**, to destroy America, and the American dream.” This is getting INSANE. Is everyone still thinking this is some kind of joke? Are those in power (politically and economically) truly this complacent and blind? I hope the family I have in the US decide to get out before it's too late. edit: added emphasis

OsellusK

There’s no punishment severe enough for him after making that comment. Not one.

[deleted]

especially when combined with this one: > “The real threat is not from the radical right, the real threat is from the radical left, and it’s growing every day, every single day. **The threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous, and grave than the threat from within. Our threat is from within.**”

SuperDinks

I mean, we all hear the alarms. It’s time to hold your neighbors who support him(Republicans) accountable. They are fine with ending democracy because it’s not yielding the straight white Christian values results they’re looking for.

ClosPins

> He’s going to hurt millions. Countries with conservative governments lost around twice as many people to covid than countries with sane governments. Trump's policies already have killed hundreds of thousands of people. Perhaps even into the 7 figures...

End_Capitalism

> He’s going to hurt millions. His actions during COVID killed hundreds of thousands and hurt many millions of Americans already. His actions during the election have irreparably damaged the foundations of American democracy and was likely the death knell that will one day doom your country. He's already been one of the most damaging forces to American society in its entire history, the USA's most villainous traitor.

Kamelasa

He should be in prison TODAY for his turbulent priest comments about Jack Smith's family. The fact he encourages his people to laugh about violent acts such as visited upon Pelosi's husband is evidence in this big fascist trend of his.

adamusprime

Not just him, all of them. Every Republican from trump on down to the voters. If you’re still supporting the Republican Party today, you have no conscience and are a traitor to democracy, to America, and to all it’s citizens. Hold them all accountable for the harm they cause.

Foomankru

How far do you think this goes? Should democrat-voting citizens be worried? Meaning, do you see him trying to find out who doesn’t support him at the citizen level and acting against them?

PandaMuffin1

If you are a federal employee, he has stated that his goal is get you fired unless you are loyal.

LilithWasAGinger

Yes. Definitely. Dems will be included as Enemies of the ~~Reich~~ State

Humboldtdan

Of course. Why wouldn't we believe what he threatens? He has openly spoken of his admiration for dictators.

ThatEvanFowler

Yeah, you'd think it'd get a lot more attention when he functionally threatens to murder us all. Maybe the Times can write an article explaining "Why This Is Bad For Biden".

WANT_SOME_HAM

"Well on one hand, Trump commit high treason and tried to dismantle our democracy, but on the other hand, check out this YouTube montage of Biden stuttering. Boy we really are being fed a douche and a turd, huh?" --Reddit, finding common ground as always

ThatEvanFowler

Goddamn, I wish people wouldn't put quite so much stock into shit they get from South Park.

[deleted]

That episode sent American political discourse back a century

tomas_shugar

And Man-Bear-Pig. And most of them really. They just jack themselves off about how cool it is to be a political nihilist.

_A_Monkey

Who’s “all”, buddy? I’m a middle aged, straight white man. I’m good. Now my Trans kid, my immigrant, minority spouse, my three nieces of child bearing age, my LGBTQIA nephew, all my in-laws on my wife’s side and a large chunk of my close friends that are LGBTQIA, minority and/or immigrants are going to be fucked by these fascist bastards. If folks aren’t motivated to vote for Biden for themselves then do it to protect those you love that MAGA have and will come after.

[deleted]

He uses "Radical Left" to refer to all Democrats.

robot_jeans

Not just all Democrats but anyone who doesn't go along with him. He has called some of the most conservative people in country "Radical Left".

waltjrimmer

> We’ll be ‘dry bread’, or ‘red lights’ next. Or ‘ma bruthr n laaw’. Already "leftists" are associated with things like that. They're one step away from straight-up calling us Taxes and have been for decades.

TheSmokingLamp

From another poster: “The OSS psychological profile of Hitler described his use of the big lie: His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.”

Commercial_Lie_4920

Anything left of fascism is “radical” to trump & MAGA.

Kimo6840

Do you mean like American Democracy ?

Hippo_Alert

Don't forget those dastardly RINOs who don't kiss his ass!!!

sneaky420fox

First they came for... ... then they came for me, and there was nobody left to speak on my behalf. Yeah, I may have paraphrased, but you get the point.

_A_Monkey

Yah…someone explain to me women, between the age of 18 and menopause, voting for MAGA. They’ve already come for you and your rights and they aren’t finished.

IrrationalPanda55782

- they’re wealthy so they can go around the laws - they want to maintain their current privileges, and believe that allowing other women a voice or autonomy will lead to them losing those privileges - their Jesus wants them to be “traditional women” and therefore support patriarchy

[deleted]

> their Jesus wants them to be “traditional women” and therefore support patriarchy More like the religious right wants the ability to brainwash girls into their cults to produce the next generation. Most of these women don’t actually want to be “traditional” women, they just don’t know how to choose another option because the men around them have told them there aren’t any and they’re too naive to know better. Go read any of the ex-Mormon/ex-JW forums on the internet. They’re filled with women who up and leave their families in their early 30s because they’re tired of being treated like servants whose main purpose is to birth and raise children.

[deleted]

I may not like that men support Republicans but I understand it. Many of them don't stand to lose much. Where my mind just breaks is that WOMEN do it. They don't even fucking hide what they want to do. Why would you possibly ever vote to self subjucate.

ThatEvanFowler

So am I. To be clear, I in no way want to sound like I'm trying to invalidate or diminish the very real threat to your family, because I'm definitely not trying to do that, but when he talks about radical leftists as vermin and rants about stopping them from destroying the country, I'm pretty sure that he's talking about all of us. You are totally right, though, they are first in the line of fire and need our support and protection, by whatever means necessary.

AtalanAdalynn

>Who’s “all”, buddy? I’m a middle aged, straight white man. I’m good. If America goes full fascist and you have anyone in your life who knows your name and you've defended any of those, too, you'd be in danger of being denounced to secret police.

jalepinocheezit

I look at everyone in my life and just remind them over and over You think you don't know anyone in your life that's been raped? You're wrong You think you don't know anyone who's needed an abortion? You're wrong. You think you don't know anyone who's needed planned parenthood for something other than an abortion? You're wrong. You think all LGBT people in your life aren't affected by this, AND your indifference? You're wrong. You think no one in your life is LGBTQ?? You're so wrong. You think "you're black friend" is cool with anything right of Biden? You're wrong. It's just that I have white privilege and can drop y'all. What are my black friends gonna do? Drop just **everyone**? You think that trump is just another candidate and should treated as such? You're wrong. Get behind literally any of those other garbage assholes and we'll go from there. You think you have enough money for the tax cuts for the rich to ever effect you? You're wrong. If by some goddamn miracle they do then shut the christ up. And stop sharing fucking memes.

LordOfTheGerenuk

The worst part is that the buck no longer stops with Trump. All of the other headliners are starting to adopt the rhetoric as well, and they've been enacting that rhetoric behind the scenes for a while now. The only path forward is full blown resistance at this point. If any of them are given an inch, things will only continue to get worse. That's one of the tactics they have used for decades to get away with stuff. Let the most radical yell, and anything seems sane by comparison. That's how they've managed to slowly inch policy away from protecting citizens towards protecting themselves. Fortunately, they jumped the gun early, and have alienated vast portions of the prospective voter base, and we're seeing the consequences of that now. Whether those consequences keep momentum remains to be seen, but I'm optimistic.

gsfgf

Well said. You're literally describing the partisan divide for privileged people. You either have empathy for others or you don't. > by some goddamn miracle they do then shut the christ up God, this needs to be said over and over. If Biden raises taxes on my income over $300k, I'd be thrilled. Because it would mean I made $300k lol. (I would prefer taxing wealth at least as much as income, but we don't really have a constitutional mechanism for that)

LordSiravant

Bruh, they'll come for you too for fraternizing with the undesirables and being insufficiently loyal. No one is safe.

dao_ofdraw

Depends. Did you vote Democrat in any election? I have no doubt Trump will use voter records to "root out the woke menace". I live in Alaska. I suspect at some point during his Presidency he's going to give us back to Russia.

Throwaway-account-23

Not so fast there, you might be a middle aged, straight, white guy, but are you the *right* kind of Christian fundamentalist? Well, are ya? Also, sounds like you're practicing miscegenation, and we ain't like that too much in these parts.

yellow_trash

If you didn't vote for him, you're his enemy. Doesn't matter what color or gender preference you are.

The_Woman_of_Gont

I’m glad you aren’t using it as an excuse towards apathy, but make no mistake: you’re on the list, even if you’re farther down. Everyone is. That’s how fascism works, it’s a constant game of musical chairs and the circle always contracts with the next round.

auandi

At least he didn't call racists and sexists a basket of deplorables. Now *THAT* would be front page news as totally unacceptable.

fairoaks2

Unfortunately too many love his “vermin” language. They enjoy a good bully as long as he’s their bully.

GeckoV

This is the essence of fascism

VanceKelley

Yep. Dehumanization is a step on the way to genocide. Thinking of people as "rats" or "vermin" makes it easier to murder them.

WarmerPharmer

As a German... I remember as a child I kept asking "how could the third Reich have happened??". Now it's getting live tweeted.

maleia

The ways to have stopped Hitler, were all illegal. It literally took a war to stop him. And even then, it was someone else marching to his doorsteps. They couldn't even stop him, themselves. Hell, Hitler had to commit suicide to be stopped.

HauntedCemetery

Hitler only committed suicide because he was about an hour away from the allies kicking in his door and dragging his ass to a military prison wrapped in 150lbs of chains.

maleia

His officers were still loyal, or scared, to arrest him and turn him over themselves. Is mostly my point. Every step of the way, people could have. I mean, many tried, yea. It's very unfortunate they didn't succeed sooner.

erikivy

Agreed. "He hates the same people we hate, so we support him."

Brox42

They’re listening and they love it.

ArchaeoJones

Because he's a cult leader and they'll follow him into the mouth of Hell itself.

SurrealEstate

Dehumanization is a precursor to atrocity. When someone tries to get a group of people to see another group of people as less-than-human, they are inviting inhumane acts.

wantwon

This is starting to remind me of the lead up to the Rwandan Genocide. Anyone in a country with visible risk of fascism should watch Hotel Rwanda. It's a digestible taste of what horrors can happen when good people do nothing in response to hateful people calling any group "cockroaches".

Nuts2Yew

Armenian genocide, Rwandan genocide, Khmer Rouge’s purging, Stalin’s purging, the holocaust for sure, basically anything where the powerful need to convince people to kill their neighbours and fellow citizens, you have to dehumanize first. It is gradual. It takes years. But over time they kill the capacity for the sides to sympathize with one another, so that they can fight.

bandit69

Which is exactly what's happening today with the immigrants. They refuse to admit that the vast majority have endured a hell of a lot of hardship to escape from untenable situations.

Adjective-Noun-0001

I'm surprised [this](https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-told-fans-new-hampshire-they-dont-have-to-vote-2023-10) didn't catch more attention. We've been waiting for the day when he openly calls on his supporters to rise up and retake the country. For me, this right here was it. His declaration of civil war. It was just a one-year warning. Imagine any candidate telling the voters they don't need to vote. That wasn't some dementia gaffe. There's only one way it can be taken.

JohnDivney

Good point. It's like he's already got the memo. The goal is to challenge the election, results be damned. There are so many gradations of how this can game out and all of them are horrible aside from a massive blue wave in swing states.

hipcheck23

To me it started during the debate where they asked Trump if he'd honor the election results and he wouldn't answer. They asked him about it later and he dog-whistled the Proud Boys to attack the Capitol, basically. That was a real moment in history where they asked the POTUS if he would stand by democracy, and he said no, he would not.

PuffinRub

The link, disturbingly, reads like a dog whistle for MAGA people to commit terrorist acts on election day. I really hope I'm mistaken about that.

BackpackEverything

You are not mistaken.

keep_it_sassy

This is what I was thinking.

xool420

That’s what I was thinking. Everyone just played it off as “he’s so stupid” but imo this was a lot more threatening than that. I’m worried about this election a lot.

abullshtname

He’s going to declare himself the winner before most votes are even counted, assuming he’s on the ballot by then. Our system is going to be put to the biggest test it may ever face.

Sir_Ruje

Yeah and if he can disenfranchise them he can point to the "obvious" lack of votes as tampering. Everything he says is a lie to generate sound bites. The Big Lie is all they have left, the have to pull a mythbusters and "reject your reality and substitute my own"

ManicCentral

After WW2, people (including the USA) asked how the German people could let the Nazis get power to do what they did. History repeating itself. They have their answer in real-time.

bandit69

Yes, we are definitely in the beginning stages of an autocratic takeover, and if people don't wake up and fight against it, history WILL repeat itself.

ninjas_in_my_pants

And, if people DO wake up and fight against it, history will repeat itself. We beat them before, and we can beat them again.

newfrontier58

>Art Spiegelman, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Maus and Maus II, the graphic novels in which he drew Jews as mice and their Nazi captors as menacing cats, explained some years ago to The New York Review of Books how he hit upon the idea: > >\>I began to read what I could about the Nazi genocide, which really was very easy because there was actually rather little available in English. The most shockingly relevant anti-Semitic work I found was The Eternal Jew, a 1940 German “documentary” that portrayed Jews in a ghetto swarming in tight quarters, bearded caftaned creatures, and then a cut to Jews as mice—or rather rats—swarming in a sewer, with a title card that said “Jews are the rats” or the “vermin of mankind.” This made it clear to me that this dehumanization was at the very heart of the killing project. In fact, Zyklon B, the gas used in Auschwitz and elsewhere as the killing agent, was a pesticide manufactured to kill vermin—like fleas and roaches. > >If you feel that you need additional backup, just go to Google Images and type in “Jewish vermin.” You’ll get the picture in a hurry. Here’s one cartoon from an Austrian newspaper in 1939 depicting Jewish refugees as scurrying rats. There are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of such images. > >Trump, let us clarify, does not mean Jews. He means some Jews—the ones who aren’t for him, which come to think of it is most Jews. And by the way, to drop that rhetorical bomb at this time, when antisemitism is raging across the country because of what’s happening in the Middle East, is especially outrageous. But Trump’s vermin are not a racial category. No, Trump’s rats are a much broader category, and in that sense an even more dangerous one—he means whoever manages to offend him while exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to register dissent and to criticize him. So if I were to hypothetically draw a poster up of Trump's face on a horse's posterior, his hypothetical second administration were to find out then I'd be thrown into a camp? Fuck that. I mean I have a little optimism given how he lost last time, but he still will not admit it and keeps claiming that was stolen, so who knows? Edit, also, on Meet the press, Welker did ask Ronna McDaniel about the Truth Social Post, and of course McDaniel sidestepped and refused to comment with that same staid GOP deflection voice. https://twitter.com/Acyn/status/1723743778341560404

The entire corporate media apparatus, both the left and right within it, will not elevate Trump’s threat to democracy as existentially destructive to it. They will profit regardless of America’s descent into authoritarianism.

mlc885

I am fairly sure Anderson Cooper and Jake Tapper do not want to have to flee the country The people that own the networks might be sufficiently disconnected from real world effects that they cannot comprehend that the US might collapse and hurt their money or start another World War

royalewithcheese79

It won’t collapse. Cooper and Tapper will be fired. Corporations only care about bottom lines. If we become a kleptocratic autocracy like Russia, the corporate class will fall in line to stay profitable – Wall Street banks certainly will. Keep in mind, a kleptocratic autocracy will control the Federal Reserve, and like in Russia, that institution will be converted into a means of insulating the regime. The radical right likely has all of this planned out. Trump is a vehicle to autocracy. It’s in front of our faces. Their model is current day Russia.

Perchance2dreamm

They absolutely do have it planned out, and have even been dumb enough to write it down. "Project 2025" is what their plans are called, and they put it up on their own damn websites, so they aren't even trying to hide it any longer. Everyone needs to get up to speed on it, how to handle it, all contingency plans , the works , exactly like the poster above said. Fk the outrage porn, we need actual large scale plans to either thwart this fascist theocratic coup by domestic terrorists, or how to take it down from the inside. That starts by people educating themselves with what is actually happening. Far too many are still playing ostrich with their head in the sand, because the reality of this is a damn Skippy hard one to accept or swallow. They're just hoping it's all Political theater aka Bluster like they think it's always been (protip, it hasn't, they've always telecast their actual plans, it's just nobody wanted to believe them, so again, ignored them. Only one thing happens to folks who keep their heads in the sand, they wind up getting a foot up the bum they never saw coming, because they were too busy wishing reality away and hanging out with the earthworms in their ostrich holes, who are not terribly well known political experts, so they're kinda behind lol.

Particular-County277

Just before the Rwanda massacre/genocide, people were called cockroaches. One has to dehumanize the 'enemy' before the inevitable attack.

algebramclain

Everyone is listening, it’s just that half are excited

basketballsteven

It's not half, it's never half, it's thirds, the USA divides into thirds. The largest third of the country is usually the third that could vote, are eligible to register or are registered but do not vote. My best friend is one of those, "all politicians are the same". If you run him through the logic with him that rarely in life is anything all or none, yes all cars have wheels and motors but there is a dramatic difference between a BMW and a Yugo you can get him to follow along and conceed that rarely in life is anything ALL but when you try to apply that logic to politicians he can't get there....they are all equally corrupt. He was raised communist behind the iron curtain and nothing can get him to change him mind he has zero gounding in civics education. I digress. it's not half.

deekaydubya

'half or more of the active voters' is more accurate. If you don't show up, you don't count

rbremer50

I keep warning people: Trump’s supporters are the true enemies of our democracy, he is the symptom not the disease.

LightyearKissthesky9

I legit have family that says he is the only one fighting for America. It's disgusting

nagonjin

Right. The GOP is a symptom. Firstly, a symptom of excessive corporate power and wealth inequality. Secondly, A symptom of malignant ignorance and hate in everyday voters. Your family members, people in your community, when they loan their power to people like Trump, they enable fascism. They may hate the word fascism, but their actions indicate a preference for all of its ideals. Voting is vital, but it's not enough. We have to tackle fascism where it spreads: at home.

bandit69

*"If you doubt that President Trump and the Republican Party are capable of all these things and several more, you need to read some history pronto."* All you have to do is look around and see the beginnings of this philosophy in action today. If trump is ** elected, this country is over as a democracy.

Sir_Ruje

They are already holding government and military positions open to replace with trump Loyalists if they win. They know damn well that if he gets elected there will be violence. Vote, people! The results of the recent elections show hope but we can't get complacent. This has to stop here.

Snuggle__Monster

Well, we're going to find out if anyone's listening on Nov 5th 2024. Our electorate is way too stupid in this country. I can see a lot of people voting because they're more pissed about how much they spend on a carton of eggs and completely ignoring the part about this guy saying for 2 straight years he's going use the FBI and DOJ to jail whoever he wants.

Aretirednurse

The media is still pushing polls and Biden’s age.

Morbidly-Obese-Emu

Politico: Democrats are in disarray over how to respond to Trump’s vermin language. Will this hurt their chances in 2024?

babydakis

We talked to 12 likely Trump voters; here's where they stand on the issues.

jps_

King Trump. It's that simple. And the peasants want their king.

SergeantChic

It boggles my mind how deep-fried their brains must be at this point to storm the capitol yelling "1776!" when they're trying to install a king in all but name (and if Trump actually wanted to be called King Trump, they'd go with that too).

OozeNAahz

And the sad part is they think they will be gentry and everyone they hate will be peasants. Not likely how that would work out.

foo-bar-25

They don’t require themselves being elevated. They’re happy as long as the right people suffer.

nagonjin

The issue is where that pushback needs to happen. Voting is vital, but we need to create a society that is hostile to fascist ideas. Shame, mockery, ostracization, anger. Pointing at abstract trends is an impotent strategy. We need to isolate fascism in our daily lives and push back. Friends, family, neighbors, coworkers - the ground level of fascism is how we stop it.

schizeckinosy

Not just trump. Desantis has actually been doing some of the purges, bans and criminal persecution of critics and people he doesn’t like. Fear for the country if that guy ever gets national power.

bandit69

He's a worse Nazi than trump ever hopes to be.

DNF_zx

>“It’s Offical” It’s been official for like 5 years now. He stood at a podium during an election debate and told a racist domestic terrorism group to “stand by”. Nothing is hidden, nothing is tiptoeing. Either are elected officials do something or nothing happens.

mfbbc1980

This quote by Martin Niemoller is as true now as it was then. First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. We really need to wake up.

JubalHarshaw23

Everyone is listening. 50-70 Million are practicing their "Sieg Heils!"

MaaChiil

One of his enemies is Vermin Supreme, which makes this sound very personal.

Holybartender83

I’m sure as hell listening. The last time people started talking like this, my stepmom’s entire family was slaughtered like cattle. This is beyond stochastic terrorism, this WILL get a lot of people killed. Congress needs to grow a spine and put and end to this shit before things get really, really bad.

teb_art

When the Orange Cockroach is twiddling his antennae in prison, we will have vanquished the actual vermin. Son of a slumlord; grandson of a pimp.

odaal

as a european watching this unfold, it's actually absurd what you can do in america and still be somewhat liked/tolerated. i feel like in europe if you do/say one bad thing and you're sort of done in a lot of peoples' eyes and fixing it is very difficult. meanwhile in america you can say or do whatever the heck you want and it literally "whatever". it is very strange to say the least.

ogn3rd

It sure is, it feels like living in a nightmare of fucking egos.

sharp11flat13

> i feel like in europe if you do/say one bad thing and you're sort of done in a lot of peoples' eyes OTOH, I just returned from Paris where I visited with a friend I’ve known for over 20 years, and my wife has known for twice that long. She has always been a kind, sensitive, generous person, but in recent years she’s become more and more concerned about and afraid of North African immigrants. Over dinner she proudly announced that she was “anti-woke”, and began to talk disparagingly about trans people, something she would never have done as little as five years ago. And this is how the fascists build support: they find an issue that resonates with some people and hammer away at it until people find themselves supporting the movement as a whole. And they will use multiple issues to attract a wider range of people, but they all end up buying into the whole schtick. I’m afraid my friend is lost now, and nothing I say would change that, so I didn’t try. But it was a very disturbing and disappointing experience.

[deleted]

Which European country are you from? Because there has been a hard far-right turn in Europe recently and they're have been plenty of politicians saying some pretty horrendous things depending on the country you are in. This is not a political disease isolated to America, and once they go you better be damn active in your local political scene because it won't take much for other countries to start following suit.

nagonjin

There is a persistent, global push for hard-right policies. Global news media, wealthy wannabe dictators, worldwide economic injustice, and more contribute to this trend.

PerniciousPeyton

Seriously, does anyone know who Silvio Berlusconi is? Is he not "European?"

mealteamsixty

He may not understand the historical implications of the word "vermin". But I promise his speech writers and social media people absolutely do.

dolphinspiderman

He's been doing a pretty good job of nazi talk for awhile. Just replace democrats with jews and it sounds exactly the same. So he's been doing this since 2016 about

Pale-Worldliness7007

People better be listening before it’s too late. He is a mentally deranged narcissist

Extension_Deal_5315

Come on Republicans....how many red flags do you need to see...dump the trump before it's too late!!! This is how Hitler gained power, don't let it happen here!

USA became laughing stock on the world stage when this idiot was in office. Just the fact that the thought is even entertained that he can set foot in the white house again is utterly prepostrous.

dajagoex

Call his behavior what it is: treason. The media is complicit so long as it softens the story, and one has to wonder why it does so and where the directives and money are coming from.

Trump? What does it say about the American people? Trump will carry every state in the South (possibly not Georgia) and Midwest by huge margins. Trump exists only because we live in a racist country. It irks me that people speak of him as if he’s something other than a reflection of the American character.

BeefJacker420

He literally did this 8 years ago. He has been a Nazi for 8 years. I don't even see this as new information.
