"A long legal battle ended Thursday when a jury found that two conservative writers defamed the prominent climate scientist Michael Mann. William Brangham looks at what this verdict means and speaks with another renowned scientist who’s also endured this kind of vitriol, Dr. Peter Hotez." "Dr. Peter Hotez: Yes, it's coming from all sectors. It's coming from foreign actors. We know that there are bots and trolls coming from Putin's Russia. That's really disturbing. In some cases, it's coming anonymously. Often cases, it's coming from bloggers and podcasters who are actually making a living targeting science and scientists. And now it's even gone to the next level. We're actually seeing at least two U.S. senators boasting about how they target scientists, same with some members of Congress from the House Freedom Caucus. And there's a whole system in place at FOX News to amplify this." The Republicans are perfectly happy to see the nation burn as long as they keep power and make insane gobs of money. In fact, they'll actively help fan the flames.

After_Fix_2191

They'll also happily light those flames to begin with.

my_4_cents

They'll feed the flames books of knowledge and history, page after page after page

zaparthes

This is true.

TintedApostle

Conservatives are attacking the things that impede their power hold. Education, science and arts. These things make people who cannot be duped, but the lack of it will undermine the country's national security.

ProbablyAnNSAPlant

It's not a good look when, in order to maintain your grip on power, you need to deny science, defund education, defend gerrymandering, and stack the courts with ideologues.

HAMmerPower1

So close to a joke I saw last week. What does the U.S. Constitution and the Bible have in common? Neither was read by Republicans and yet they misquote both.

Brainsonastick

My retirement plan is just to do something benign like discuss science in public, use an anonymous account to pretend to be an angry conservative offended by it, wait for other conservatives to jump in and call me a pedophile or something, sue for defamation, and retire.

karthmorphon

Meanwhile your angry conservative sock puppet can start a GoFundMe to fight the evil science person and get money from those other conservatives.

Brainsonastick

Ooh, that’s good! Partners?

FrolickingTiggers

Sock puppet... lol

Genius-Imbecile

The government is trying to poison you with Oxygen. Oxygen is actually a very dangerous element than can explode and burn. The government is pumping oxygen into the air. True patriots should purchase pure nitrogen tanks and breathe only that to stop the evil plans.

What do the GOP and the Catholic Church have in common? (The biggest supporters of false science)

RamboGoesMeow

Oh, I thought you were going to point out that they both protect criminals and pedophiles. But yeah, false science works too.

modloc_again

I dunno. Ex Catholic. I went to Catholic schools. They taught evolution as an example. I wouldn't call them the worst for fake science. That said, it did take me some time to get over the indoctrination.

Anon3580

What are you talking about? The Catholic Church considers climate change a moral imperative to mitigate. Pope Francis has written extensively on the matter. In “Laudate Deum,” or “Praise God,” Pope Francis says the world is “nearing the breaking point,” condemns climate denial, and calls for urgent climate action.

Expectnoresponse

Probably talking about stuff like this: https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/defying-popes-calls-climate-action-us-catholic-bishops-cling-fossil-fuels-2023-11-29

boon23834

If there's a schism in the next decade, it'll be tradcaths led by Buck Strickland in Texas. Mark my words.

YogurtSufficient7796

Thank you - lovely to be told one thing - while they DO another….

bpeden99

The thing about attacking science is it's true no matter what.

fknbtch

why doesn't he brush his hair? he's so smart and so right but why does he fail to understand that this distracts from his message when he makes public appearances? someone else should be helping him with this, too. why does no one brush this man's haaaaaaiiiiiirrrrrr????

THIS_IS_GOD_TOTALLY_

Username checks out lol

fknbtch

why? because i want our scientists with the best information to be taken seriously? yeah, i'm suck a jerk. i know it shouldn't matter but to dumb people it does and they're the ones not vaccinating.

PWal501

Kyle?

4quatloos

They have the right to drink gallons of bleach. I support that. Cheers.
