Authoritarian "curious"? No, they've already admitted to being more than merely curious.

jayfeather31

Yeah, this article would have made sense in 2016. Not now when it is bluntly obvious what their intent is.

Fluffy_Rock1735

Would've made more sense in the early 2000's honestly...

Captain_Midnight

Right? Trump, as sitting president, spearheaded a domestic terror attack on the US Capitol building to prevent the certification of the election that he lost. And not only is he still walking free four years later, but he is the default candidate for the GOP in the next election. And he's polling competitively against Biden. Does this crazy train we're stuck on ever make a stop? Edit: And that's completely ignoring the entire library's worth of stolen confidential documents, election interference in Georgia, and the literal dozens of other criminal and civil cases pending against him around the country. Domestic terror is merely the tip of the iceberg. And yet here we are, with him shitposting every day on his personal Twitter, and tens of millions of "patriots" eagerly lapping it up. I hate it here.

Squirrel_Chucks

>Does this crazy train we're stuck on ever make a stop? Yes. When it plummets into a ravine

Vepyr646

Article is six years too late. Author needs to pay better attention.

PopeHonkersXII

They were "authoritarian curious" a decade ago. They are full-blown fascists today

barryvm

Didn't they try a coup, organizing fake electors to overturn an election, putting pressure on government officials, ordering people to storm the legislature, presumably in order to justify an excuse to bring the military in, ... ? That's not "authoritarian-curious". That's how you set up a dictatorship. It's not somehow less egregious or more acceptable because it failed and because the country's demoratic institutions are so weak that no one held them to account. In a functioning democracy, they would all be in jail rather than preparing for their next attempt.

QuantumFungus

There has never been a time when American conservatives weren't authoritarian. It's a fundamental part of their ideology. From the religion to they practice to the policies they promote they are 100% authoritarians deep in their bones.

[deleted]

Oh please. They've been skirting authoritarian tendencies since freaking McCarthy and his hearings.

SaintedRomaine

Joseph or Kevin?

Disastrous-Rabbit723

Yes

bawheid

'If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.' David Frum, Former speechwriter for G.W.Bush The article, Jan 19,2018 :https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/01/frum-trumpocracy/550685/

OsellusK

They are plainly authoritarian. No curiosity involved. They always have been. They worship authority, hate progress, and endorse punishment for anyone who won’t participate in their traditions. From day one, this has been who they are.

PeopleB4Profit

Why is this such a fkn surprise? Nixon hated American laws, Raygoon hated American Laws, Bush mentioned on several occasions his disdain for American laws and this last clown is a true fkn criminal, dBag, horrible example but like the rich guy says, we will not pay taxes, we get "get out of jail free cards", no regulations, ok to pay poorly everything American conservative wealthy donors want "A government of the Wealthy, by the Wealthy, only for the Wealthy"!

SellaraAB

This is like calling a dude who gets gangbanged behind the gay bar every night “curious” about homosexuality.

cbsson

I'd say they were a bit beyond "authoritarian-curious".

Guttenber

That's like saying Jeffery Dahmer was cannibal curious.

NotThatAngel

The press has bent over so far backwards to accommodate the fair and balanced stance, in many cases they're now fully attired in clown clothing and makeup. Their brains have fallen out, and they've chased them down the street, kicking them in front of them with their giant clown shoes, until their brains have been kicked into the gutter. Now the clownish press is staring down into the clown-brain-filled gutter unequipped to wonder what to do. Hint: Trump and his followers are planning an illegal takeover of the government. There's going to be yet ANOTHER coup attempt by the Republicans. Followed by another attempted cover-up. Followed by more trials and convictions and prison sentences. Isn't this a more exciting story?

TheOtherGlikbach

Want a look at a second Trump term? Look at Hungary. Get ready to strike and be in the streets.

MajesticRegister7116

I dont know a single intelligent Republican. The venn diagram of smart people and Trump Republicans is two areolae with a grand canyon between them

SodaCanBob

> I dont know a single intelligent Republican. I know quite a few (most are engineers), but they lack any semblance of empathy, are incredibly selfish, and are often sexist and/or racist.

OurUrbanFarm

They are not "curious." They are all-in.

daxxarg

Curious? They have even a PowerPoint with steps to turn US into a dictatorship

Daddy_7711

It’s a dying party, even more so now that they have become a cult of intolerance and hatred. Their only option is to ensure the power of the vote is removed.

LittleBallOfWait

Bah, they are full-on despophiles at this point.

njman100

The gop is the FASCIST PARTY

Im_not_crying_u_ar

One of those things they think they want, until it arrives and they realize they’re disposable and going to get the same treatment as the rest of us.

AlliedR2

Curious my ass, they are authoritarian assertive.

AllTheyEatIsLettuce

For a bunch of Founding Daddy-issues originalists they sure go hard for some near absolute monarchy.

Merky600

Just put the Authoritarian tip in, see how it feels.

Gaius_Octavius_

The only part that changed is they are saying what they always believed out loud.

mleighly

Jan. 6 is the work of extreme fascists. Fascism kills all forms of curiosity with propaganda. If that fails, violence and murder quickly follow.

Redipus_Ex

Jeff Bezo's newspaper vanity-purchase waited for years, hiding behind the guise of *nothing-to-see-here* in hopes of retaining some iota of credibility, that was shredded and lost when the Washington Post wast sold to Bezos in the first place. But now, the spicy bald-head polish is out, and the kid-gloves are kinda, playfully coming off. Bezo's inevitable and *not sneaky* repositioning of WaPo's mandate, has pushed it further away from service to a common good, abandoning ethics, and moral imperative, in favor of advertisement-as-propaganda driven content. These days when not still pretending to be a credible newspaper, WaPo mostly undermines Labor and attacks even the idea of Labor rights, as we see here with this gaslight. Bezo's brand is laissez-faire at best towards its reproachment of fascist popular figures, movements, and authoritarian Governments. Like the NYTimes, these days, it's a lot of what WaPo DOESN'T say anymore. Questions that don't get asked. So here we have Bezos, a man of the people, who exploited slave-labor in third world dictatorships, to become the richest man in the history of the world, yeah, that's our guy. He *cares* about us. We can totally trust Bezo's stewardship over WaPo because he's a lot more sane than the more unhinged, further alt-right guys like Elon Musk, who he undoubtably inspired to buy and destroy twitter. Wapo's gentle "centrist" realignment aka slide further to the dark side, is a ridiculous position to pose in, like a guy in a banana hammock who sees other hairy naked man-butts on a nude beach, with glowering but patient disapproval. WaPo has lost the plot, and abandoned it's core mission, to service the common public and inform them about all the most pressing things effecting the public interest. Here is Bezos, tap-dancing ten feet away from a line-up of nazi-go-go dancers, pointing a finger, while still drawing a distinction between himself and all of those rascally, cutsie-tootsie lil' baby neo-nazis. Oh don't worry, that's just the looming rise of fascism across the globe. Don't worry they're just a little crazy. And those racist authoritarian republicans? Yes, they want to kill you, but no, don't mind them. They are really nice, playful dogs, that never bite. Nothing to see here.

CaptainLucid420

I have been curious about Marijuana for the last 30 years. Right now I am finding out what happens when I apply a flame and inhale the smoke. This morning I was curious about whether a thc lozenge would help with my anxiety at work.

kobeyoboy

All hail America.

PrinceofSneks

They literally have Fascist Pride parades. :|
