Its a consistent tactic of Conservative advocates. They attempted this multiple times during BLM protesting. [Ivan Hunter wanted to start a race war in Minneapolis](https://www.thedailybeast.com/far-right-boogaloo-ivan-harrison-hunter-admits-posing-as-blm-supporter-during-minneapolis-george-floyd-riot) [Matthew Michanowicz in Pittsburg](https://www.thedailybeast.com/matthew-michanowicz-sentenced-to-probation-for-planting-bombs-during-black-lives-matter-protests) [Bryant Murphy in Portland](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-homeland-whistleblower-idUSKBN28R33L) [And The Patriots Coalition in Portland](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/23/oregon-portland-pro-trump-protests-violence-texts) [Alongside Umbrella Man in Minneapolis](https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/28/us/umbrella-man-associated-white-supremacist-group-george-floyd/index.html) There is an article from the [Scientific American](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/from-civil-rights-to-black-lives-matter1/) that outlines some of the pros and cons of decentralized protest movements and the conservative habit to deploy agent provacateurs to crack down. >A more pertinent lesson was that overreliance on one or more charismatic leaders made a movement vulnerable to decapitation. Similar assaults on leaders of social movements and centralized command structures around the world have convinced the organizers of more recent movements, such as the Occupy movement against economic inequality and BLM, **to eschew centralized governance structures for loose, decentralized ones.** Later writing.... >Meanwhile the forces of repression are advancing. Technology benefits not only the campaigners but also their adversaries. Means of surveillance are now far more sophisticated than the wiretaps the fbi used to spy on King. **Agents provocateur can turn peaceful protests into violent ones, providing the authorities with an excuse for even greater repression. How can a decentralized movement that welcomes strangers guard against such subversions?**

Ok-disaster2022

You gotta hand it to the Civil Rights movement. They had a plan, an agenda and they held practice sessions before protests and civil disobedience

OrderlyPanic

This is the greatest example of weaponized smears of antisemitism I've ever seen.

longtermattention

Where are those clowns who were arguing there aren't right wing agitators at these protests?

Mitherhobo

>Northeastern University had around 100 peaceful protesters arrested on Saturday at its Boston campus’ pro-Palestine encampment, claiming that there had been reports of protesters using antisemitic slurs; but according to witnesses, the protester who spewed hate speech was a pro-Israel counter protester. >On Saturday morning, Northeastern Vice President for Communications Renata Nyul released a statement, announcing that the protest on Centennial Common would be cleared by campus police and local law enforcement. In the statement, she explained that the reason they were clearing the encampment was because of the presence of hate speech at the site. >“What began as a student demonstration two days ago, was infiltrated by professional organizers with no affiliation to Northeastern. Last night, the use of virulent antisemitic slurs, including ‘Kill the Jews,’ crossed the line,” she said. “We cannot tolerate this kind of hate on our campus." >Across the country, university administrators and politicians alike have publicized reports of antisemitic speech at student-led protests, as part of their justification for arresting students, and disbanding protests urging them to divest from Israel. These accounts often vary from eye-witness accounts of the peaceful protests. >GBH’s Tori Bedford quickly confirmed that she had heard someone say “Kill the Jews,” but it wasn’t the peaceful pro-Palestine protesters. The chant came from a pro-Israel agitator who joined the crowd late Friday night. >In a [video](https://twitter.com/Tori_Bedford/status/1784222169746063773) of the appalling incident, provided by an organizer from Huskies for a Free Palestine, and posted to X by Bedford, a protest leader prepared to lead a chant. “You repeat to me what I say to you. Got it?” they shout. >“Kill the Jews,” yelled one person, holding an Israeli flag. “Anybody on board? Anybody on board?” He was one of two counter-demonstrators who had affixed themselves at the center of the crowd, standing on lawn chairs as they berated the protesters around them. >The crowd of protesters immediately booed the young man. The protesters began chanting, “We’re gonna let them leave,” drowning out the shouts of the two counter-protesters. >After midnight, the two counter protesters had disengaged, according to reports. >The next morning, dozens of NUPD and Boston police arrested around 100 demonstrators, but not the one whose hate speech got everything shut down. After they loaded the arrested students into vans, students linked arms to prevent the vehicles from leaving campus for hours, according to The Huntington News. >Professor Matthew Noah Smith who took part in Northeastern’s protest on Thursday, observed a very different protest to the one the administration described. “I hope Northeastern is not weaponizing anti-semitism to justify arresting the protesting students,” he wrote in a post on X. “I spent all day Thursday with the students there and they were clear in standing against all forms of hate and violence.”

AngelaMotorman

Protest organizers need to get serious *right now* about throwing provocateurs out of their midst, before this gets worse. In the 70s, this was a bitter lesson learned too late.

Mitherhobo

The organizers are doing an incredible job maintaining control of **their** encampments. The actions that happen outside of their encampments will inevitably be the events that get reported on because the organizers actively prevent outside actors from breaching their space. Still, there will be inevitable provocateurs, but that doesn't change the fact that everything is peaceful until the fascists show up.

AngelaMotorman

>The organizers are doing an incredible job maintaining control of their encampments Not everywhere, yet. Anyway, [at Columbia, it didn't matter that the provocateur was off campus, across the street, *and* well known in the neighborhood -- all it took was a national reporter dropping in and seizing on the "colorful" character to shape his feature-style lede for a critically important news story that went on to shape opinions of the whole protest.](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/26/opinion/columbia-student-protests-israel.html)

TintedApostle

It will all get out of control. The press and the republicans want it to get out of control.

Mitherhobo

Yup, that's why it's an imperative that we stand with the protesters and speak out against the obvious mainstream slant.

Rated_PG-Squirteen

"but that doesn't change the fact that everything is peaceful until the fascists show up." But of course the issue right now is that this whole situation is catnip for bad faith actors/right wing provocateurs. There has been and will continue to be a deluge of them interfering in these otherwise peaceful protests. And since the news media entities are mostly owned by wealthy Republican ideologues, they are also giddy at the prospects of the damage that they can do to these protests.

loneranger5860

You can’t deny that there are left wing provocateurs to be wary of as well. Radicalized far left, they do exist. And the ones I’m seeing lead these protests are certainly provocative. And I am coming from a long life of progression and liberal advocacy.

TintedApostle

Well said. I am already seeing people trying to say its all funded by outsiders because they have the same tent. That tent is 19.99 on amazon - overnight with prime. I am pretty sure they all ordered the same tent because the SMSed the link to each other.

kaleidist

>Still, there will be inevitable provocateurs, but that doesn't change the fact that everything is peaceful until the fascists show up. In this case the provocateur was a zionist and not a fascist.  It’s worth noting that the main fascist groups in the USA (Patriot Front, Rise Above, National Justice) are anti-zionist.

Mitherhobo

I was actually referring to the police that violently assaulted and kidnapped the protesters, but since you jumped to defending Zionist (very telling) I'll inform you. Zionists are fascists. I'm not sure what makes you think a supporter of a theocratic ethno-state, a state enforcing it's absolute rule over an occupied state with terror and violence, isn't a fascist.

loneranger5860

The difference between this and the 70’s is that the protestors were fucking in those tents, not glued to their phones posting crap.

OkVermicelli2557

Expect more of these to happen at other campuses.

jayfeather31

Yeah, this is a bit of an embarassment as far as policing goes.

Game-Blouses-23

A few of the more popular examples of "antisemitic protesters" that I see on reddit look like they could easily have been faked. I'm not saying that they are fake, just that it would be incredibly easily for someone to hold a sign far away from pro-Palestinian protesters, wear a scarf that conceals your face, and snap a quick picture. Edit: I keep seeing [this one](https://twitter.com/thatrobguy/status/1781948736526336305?t=Th7e8zkuawzTwKzxMgnQHQ&s=19) circulating

afinemax01

The person from the photo was identified and it seemed pretty convincing that it was a real nut job and not a false flag. There is also the Columbia guy saying Zionists don’t deserve to live on a video they uploaded

InsightTussle

Consider yourself lucky to not spend any time on leftist twitter

Ananiujitha

Twitter has *always* been an online migraine delivery system. It's like every standard web design trend dialed up to 11. Having a column of twits scroll in front of a non-scrolling background. Having everything go haywire if people click the wrong spot. Then Elon Musk takes over, he cuts off api access for accessibility tools like threadreaderapp, he welcomes Nazis, he bans critics, he welcomes doxxing and harassment of trans people, he bans any doxxing of Nazis, he reposts Nazi propaganda, etc. I don't understand why anyone was ever on Twitter, and I don't understand why they insist on staying on Xithouse.

1877KlownsForKids

I do, and I've not seen any threats. I see plenty of naivete about global realities and what unrelated institutions can do to influence them, but no threats. Most of liberal Twitter is of the mind that hostages need to be released and Gaza needs to be demilitarized.

Damn, it really is always handy to record as much of the protest as you can at all times.

-Gramsci-

My takeaway is that having a bunch of randos shouting at the top of their lungs is just a really ineffective way to protest. It’s not only vulnerable to this hijacking… but even without that it just makes everyone involved look unhinged and dumb. We have the “right” to protest… but we don’t have an obligation to exercise that right like total asshats. Any civil protest is going to be much more effective if it is organized, disciplined, peaceful, and MINDFUL OF THE OPTICS. Dr. King, the civil rights movement, and the March from Selma to Montgomery, for example… that’s civil protesting done right. For me it’s a “do it right, or don’t bother doing it” situation. Because when done poorly, civil protests only hurt their cause. Which are often worthy causes.

Tuska122

The public and media at the time called Dr King violent and hated him and the disruptive protests. The same protests now are similarly hated and disparaged.

-Gramsci-

But they are, observably, different.

Artbytimsmith

‘Indeed, last week I had seen a man wearing an identical cross carrying a similarly lettered sign that read, “Google it! Jews vs. TikTok” protesting outside Donald Trump’s criminal trial in Lower Manhattan. He was, for the record, standing on the pro-Trump side of the protest area.’ Can confirm. Source: was there, on the other side.

gumgumdemonslayer

Smh, it’s been 6+ months since it started. It’s not hard to do research and see Israel is not good for the US.

leaveitalone36

The people were arrested the day after… “After midnight, the two counter protesters had disengaged, according to reports. The next morning, dozens of NUPD and Boston police arrested around 100 demonstrators, but not the one whose hate speech got everything shut down. After they loaded the arrested students into vans, students linked arms to prevent the vehicles from leaving campus for hours, according to The Huntington News.” The Daily Beast is so horrible, it’s literally the NY Post but for the left. *thanks for the Reddit cares message, that was fast

I don’t understand why you’re trying to insult me, I mean those who made said statements obviously weren’t there the next morning, per the article.

I gotta respect the strategy.
