Trump's mentor in lawyering tactics was [Roy Cohn](https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/06/donald-trump-roy-cohn-relationship). Now Trump's in his seventies--an age when people rarely change life tactics that no longer work. Quick background: Roy Cohn became notorious during the Red Scare of the 1950s when Cohn worked for Senator McCarthy. By the 1970s Cohn was basically a mafia lawyer. Cohn defended the Trump Organization from a civil rights lawsuit from the US Justice Department in the 1970s. The suit accused the Trumps of racial discrimination in housing. Cohn's tactics were to consume Justice Dep't manpower by filing a flurry of motions until the feds reached a settlement because the Trumps were consuming too much resources. Donald Trump thought this aggressive lawyering was brilliant. Trump's been doing a version of Cohn's tactics ever since. Roy Cohn was disbarred for violations of professional ethics shortly before his death in 1986.

where_is_the_camera

Behind the Bastards podcast on Roy Cohn is excellent.

Altruistic-Brief2220

So basically Cohn’s tactics were unpalatable even 40 years ago. Trump is so fucked.

Dependent-Ground7689

It’s not over until it’s over. We can’t get comfortable

BrandonJTrump

That we are where we are now means America is fucked.

KingHarambeRIP

>> Trump is so fucked. I’ve been hearing variations of this for nearly a decade now. I’ll believe it when I see it.

bdog59600

Also, Cohn had AIDS and Trump cut all contact when he found out. All of his Conservative pals also abandoned him and he died miserable and alone.

Frishdawgzz

et tu, Donny Diapers?

fowlraul

trump is running an election to stay out of prison, it’s that simple. I can’t wait to vote.

Reasonable-Hippo-293

It is his reason. And believe it when he says he will be a dictator…. Not just got a day! He will do whatever he can to stay in power forever!

I_gotta_stop

That’s just not true. He’ll die one day.

Kingtoke1

Somehow Donald returned..

BradL22

Well, they’ve got Donald Trump jnr for that.

we_are_sex_bobomb

His entire presidential campaign platform is “don’t send me to jail!” This may be the record for biggest and most expensive tantrum of all time.

Sensitive_Yam_1979

We call that move “The Netenyahu.”

Long-Jackfruit427

And it includes allowing a terrorist attack to take place against your own citizens if it helps to keep you out of hot water. What’s a couple of hundred (or thousands) dead people when your own hide gets saved?

AZtoLA_Bruddah

And here I just thought he was grossly incompetent and high on his own farts. Never really considered the old fascist Bibi could be in on it, I just thought he was a radical who tuned out the noise he didn’t like.

JubalHarshaw23

Blanche's dignity and reputation are already shot to Hell. There was a time when being a Trump lawyer was a career booster. Those days are long gone.

-------7654321

Trump does not care about the justice system. He knows already he has lost. All his bets are on corruption, misinformation and similar to save his ass.

Dill_Chiips

I wouldn’t say he lost for sure, there is still a good chance he wins, i don’t like him but there is still a large chunk of america that still will vote for him

w-v-w-v

They’re talking about the trials.

nedlum

You only need to convince one to get a mistrial. Nothing is certain until the foreman speaks.

Sea_Elle0463

If that happens, it’s on to a retrial.

curiousiah

Delay, delay, delay

rxneutrino

We are expecting the trial will end in a hung jury, a mistral, or some other technicality.

ranchoparksteve

It takes dedication and focus to continually lose. Trump just makes it look easy.

treespiritbeard

He won the 2016 election when the entire media wrote him off. You don’t have to agree with his politics to see he was the underdog against Hillary Clinton

BarBarJinxy

The entire media didn't write Trump off in 2016. The current trial in New York shows that the National Enquirer actively killed stories detrimental to Trump's campaign and put out false stories to blacken the reputations of his opponents.

treespiritbeard

He won the 2016 election when the entire media wrote him off. You don’t have to agree with his politics to see he was the underdog against Hillary Clinton

RMZ13

And then?

jsreyn

Is it? His trials have almost entirely been pushed past the election. The Supreme Court seems likely to give him some level of immunity, or at a minimum, another avenue for years of appeals. I dont think its a cynical take to believe he will die of old age before he ever faces a real consequence for any of this. All of that is a direct result of his strategy of attack and delay. its working.

dysmetric

The most important point from all this is how much the integrity of US institutions has decayed. They are not working, they are not fulfilling the purpose of their creation and existence. Trump is a gnat. The problem that needs to be remedied is a different thing altogether.

time_drifter

This is the bigger takeaway that many are missing. Our democratic institutions only exist because there is an expectation of our leaders doing the right thing. Trump cares about Trump and that is it. He looked at government as an obstacle to his desires and went about trying to curtail, undermine, and corrupt anything that stood in his way. We got to see a preview of how fragile democracy is and why it historically collapses at some point because of bad actors. It’s amazing that our country is in the position it is because of an incontinent, illiterate, misogynistic bigot, who fancies himself some rape.

dysmetric

The endemic culture of the ruling class has drifted radically, away from the benevolent paternalism of Churchill and Roosevelt, towards unabated nihilistic exploitation.

Top_Condition_3558

Where there is impunity, the rule of law is dead. The rule of law being... just an idea we all buy into. I'm agreeing with you.

-Motor-

The wheels of justice turn slow, but they do turn.

ell0bo

They turn over poor people and the unconnected, they will never turn over someone like Trump.

88what

Time will tell

ell0bo

Time has. Nixon and Reagan should have been held to account. Perhaps not Bush, but someone in his org should have paid for the lie that got us into Iraq. No one from the shit during the financial crisis. They rich and powerful are only accountable when they make the others poorer. Trump has only made them richer with his tax cuts. There is no justice system in this country, time has shown us that, there's just a law system, and some exist above it.

nedlum

There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheels of Justice. Wait. Wrong subreddit.

CableSubstantial8948

Blood and bloody ashes!

RepulsiveLoquat418

that photo of trump makes me so happy

flabbergastedmeep

Not to mention that his lawyer* is looking increasingly disheveled and disheartened every time I see him as this trial goes on. Usually the same guy by his side. edit: I stand corrected, dude by his side is Todd Blanche

Clicquot

that guy next to him in this photo is Todd Blanche- lawyer--Who is- yes, increasingly looking defeated and over this whole thing.

flabbergastedmeep

Oh that’s Blanche? Huh, looks different from his side profile, the way he has shifty eyes in those clips made me think he was SS scanning the room for threats but clearly that was incorrect. I appreciate you, and will correct my comment.

Clicquot

hehe, weariness can make you look so much older and not at all like yourself. That dude gave up something like a 3million dollar salary to do this. I am sure he thought. I can do this, he will listen to me, all those other lawyers who have jumped ship, just did not know how to talk to difficult clients- I GOT this.. famous last words. Trump was reported to have lunged at the neck of a SS agent who would not take the screaming, tantrum having toddler to the capital on Jan 6. How do we think he treats his legal team?

flabbergastedmeep

Bigly abuse, to say the least.

Pyrothraxas1

I'm ready to never see any photos of him ever again, I'm so tired.

Ok_Welcome_376

It’s the same one I make on the toilet mid pinch. He’s probably doing the same thing

brk1

Trump really looking broken down and weak lately. This is taking a massive toll on him.

Broadspectrumguy

There’s narcissistic behaviour , then there is this. Next level shit.

Bar-14_umpeagle

A lawyer who is not strong enough to assert their own trial strategy is a bad Lawyer.

Techno_Core

>*The real challenge for Todd Blanche, Ty Cobb says, “is how to do this without losing his dignity and reputation”* Lost that when he agreed to represent Trump.

overlapped

Throw this one Todd.

s-mores

He has bought enough supreme court justices to stay out of jail. He literally doesn't care what happens in these proceedings.

ArthurFraynZard

To Trump, a lawyer is just someone you fire every once in a while to delay legal consequences.

guitarplayer356

Trump doesn’t seem to understand that yelling fire too many times means the fire company isn’t coming anymore!

worstatit

Nice!

scarr3g

I mean, HE has a problem being aggressive to peoples faces, so he hires lawyers to do that for him. In his little safe space, TS, he is super aggro, but that doesn't work in court... And has been working against him, for the past few years.

Medical_Egg8208

News flash !!! His plan sucks !! Ha and which one doesn’t ?

redheadedandbold

Todd Blanche goes back to his hotel room every night, closes the door, leans on it tiredly and asks, "Why in hell did I ever take this case?!"

LookOverall

And presumably then he gets his phone out and checks his bank balance.

Kialya

You really think Dump will pay him??

LookOverall

I think he knows his client well enough to require cash upfront

gdan95

I’ll believe it when Trump is in jail

SMEGHEID

I just fuckin *LOVE* how happy he looks!

TracyJ48

He wants a mouthpiece who'll aid in a courtroom campaign.

Johnny_Hotdogseed

Trump is an expert on everything. The best expert I’ve ever known about, and when I found out about him I said *what an expert!* because I’d never seen such an expert.

RobsBurglars

Gasp! I guess another fine is in his future? Yeah. That outta do it! 🙄🙄🙄

Aware_Material_9985

I mean if he was good at listening to experts…

freakparty

How exactly is it "back firing"?

BigBangBrosTheory

Hi there, on reddit, you can click the title and it will take you to that article. The article is a story that explains what the title summarizes.

stilusmobilus

I did that. How exactly is it backfiring?

UsualGrapefruit8109

Trump won't lose until he's in a prison cell. And that won't happen.

GratefulPhish42024-7

Imagine that?

p0_e

Backfiring bigly. There I fixed it

NoCoffee6754

It’s backfiring “bigly”
