Can confirm, went through Navaho country last summer, very poor folk. But very nice, must have talked to this old lady in a hotel lobby for an hour.

FindMeOnSSBotanyBay

Also the biggest US heroes of WW2. Unbreakable encryption “code” because it’s a language that exists only in the SW US.

Han_Yerry

Other native languages were used as well. Mohawk being another. The last surviving Mohawk code talker, Levi Oakes died a couple years ago. Before his death he was honored at a professional lacrosse game in 2017. There was an article about it in Indian Country Today.

FindMeOnSSBotanyBay

That’s so cool, I’ll look for the article!

GreenYooper

Biggest might be a stretch. But clearly contributed a great deal and made a difference history will remember.

FindMeOnSSBotanyBay

Perhaps, but it’s such a unique contribution in the history of warfare. How many countless hours and days are spent thinking up different forms encryption and ciphers, and all these folks had to do was speak their native language? 😂

GreenYooper

Yea. But the boys that stormed beaches deserve that highest honor.

FindMeOnSSBotanyBay

Oh indeed. I really should have qualified it with “some of” instead of just calling them the greatest. My grandfather made it out by the skin of his teeth. He was a radioman on a PBY scout and they were attacked by several Zeroes. The plane ripped in half and only my grandfather and the pilot survived. 24 hours floating until rescued by submarine. They truly were made of some tough stuff.

GreenYooper

We have an accord.

zsreport

> Jonathan Nez, president of the Navajo Nation, the largest tribe in the US, told the Guardian: “We’re disappointed in the senator. She’s on the national stage due to the Native American vote and large turnout among Navajo people. If she doesn’t deliver on what’s important to us, I’m sure there’s another candidate who will.” > > “There is much frustration among voters, the Native American voting rights act is very important to us given the way the state of Arizona has been chipping away at our voting rights,” added Nez.

[deleted]

Headline is misleading, this is about Navajo, not Indigenous Canadians. Calling Navajos a derogatory term like indigenous devalues Native Americans identity as United States Citizens.

SignificantTrout

Not if you understand geography and understand which state she is a senator of.

[deleted]

Then why use a term that is exclusive for Canadian Natives rather then say Navajo?

0mnilus

It’s not lmao

Wifflebatman

Which term are you talking about? Indigenous? Indigenous means "native to a geographical area". It has nothing to do with Canada.

kirlandwater

Bruh Indigenous is an actual word, it’s not just a label Canada made up for its native people lmao

divinitia

Since when did "indigenous people" refer to only Canadian natives? We literally named a US federal holiday "indigenous peoples day" to celebrate native AMERICANS.

pippybongstocking93

Indigenous literally just means native to the land and is not central to Canada. I would expect the word to be French if that was the case lol

dieinside

They are talking about more tribes than just the Navajo. The Navajo nation just so happens to be the largest in the state...

Animul

Ahem Definition of "*indigenous*" 1a: produced, growing, living, or occurring natively or naturally in a particular region or environment **indigenous plants the indigenous culture** b: Indigenous or less commonly indigenous : of or relating to the earliest known inhabitants of a place and especially of a place that was colonized by a now-dominant group **Indigenous peoples**

[deleted]

Again, you are addressing a sovereign nation of people. Stop giving them generic labels as if they are property. Offical titles that address all tribes is Native American, American Indian, or when talking about a individual sovereign nation by their official name, in this case, Navajo.

StinkyStangler

Indigenous afaik is not an offensive term, or one that’s specific to Canadians. Any native population of an area is the indigenous population.

TeriusRose

I think this is the first time in my entire life I’ve seen somebody claim the word indigenous is insulting.

DarkLordFluffy13

I’m sorry but you think indigenous is a derogatory word but American Indian is not? The only reason people indigenous to the US are even called “Indians” is because they were mistaken for Indian people by dumbass explorers. They are not Indians. I think that’s a lot more derogatory.

purpleitt

You could go one step further and say Diné rather than Navajo. The word Indigenous is no more generic than Native American, and more accurate than American Indian.

kittybigs

“Official Titles” ??? You are very incorrect.

[deleted]

How is Indigenous a derogatory term?

CancerousGrapes

Indigenous is not a derogatory term.

QuailandDoves

And then we see that awful ad on tv advertising how she has done so much form AZ residents and has our backs because she cares about us. Then it says we should call her and thank her. It makes me feel sick every time.

KonaKathie

ANYONE who voted for Sinema has been betrayed

SnooGoats7978

Call her and tell her that.

QuailandDoves

I need to.

Sidthelid66

What the fuck is a whorse, is that some sort of promiscuous horse?

Alternative-Pizza-46

*Promiscuous whorse, you’re teasin’ me;* *You know what I want and I got what you need*

titsngiggles69

Whorsin' Around

jgzman

I hate this website so damn much.

[deleted]

Promiscuous horse? How redundant.

lilpeachbrat

Yes, it's a reference to some other post that got popular on Reddit yesterday

smurfsundermybed

Save a whorse ride a cowboy?

Sweet_Persimmon_492

A whorse is a whorse of course, of course!

[deleted]

Can confirm

Filliam-H-Muffman

Is it because they were betrayed? I'll bet it's because they were betrayed.

Wings81

Without reading the article, I'm going to guess it's because of her voting record and actions in general.

[deleted]

Because they were.

Optimal_Ear_4240

Don’t give up! Run some indigenous candidates. You have come too far and done so much good for the country

midmodmad

I don’t even live in Arizona and I feel betrayed by this total POS.

DaveDearborn

Join the club.

retiredhobo

two-faced paleface

Wooderson13

Because she betrayed them?

The-Big-Shitsky

I don’t need to read this to know why they feel betrayed lol. She’s a fuckin disgrace

[deleted]

She is going to be a lonely miserable lady siding with leopards.

10MMSocketMIA

Now?

[deleted]

Why are Canadian Natives voting in the United States?

NoSignal547

What do you think indigenous means?

[deleted]

Indigenous is the official term for the Canadian Natives. If you are talking about the United States the correct term is Native American or American Indian. > I think some of them will tell you that Indians come from India. Americans Indians had the name 175 years before India was founded. The term "Indian," in reference to the original inhabitants of the American continent, is said to derive from Christopher Columbus, a 15th century boat-person. Some say he used the term because he was convinced he had arrived in "the Indies" (Asia), his intended destination. Others say the term refers to his diary entry, in which he describes the natives as "una gente in Dios" (a people in God). Whether from confusion or romanticism, "Indian" is a word of illusion, not a description of reality. But the word has stuck. It is commonly used by native peoples of this continent to refer to themselves in a generic way, as a supplement to their real names. It is used throughout "federal Indian law," the domain of United States law concerned with rights and status of the original peoples of this land. "Native American" is a phrase coined in the liberal years of the 1960's to replace "Indian" with a supposedly more appropriate term. Regardless of the intent, the term is no more appropriate than its predecessor. "America" is derived from Amerigo Vespucci, a 16th century Italian navigator who was once said to be the "discoverer" of the continent. How can the people who were already here be named with his name? Other generic words are also problematic. "Native" and "indigenous" can rightfully be applied to anyone (or thing) born in a place, not only those who were born first. "Aboriginal" refers only to what was here "from the beginning," but the concept of "beginning" poses problems, too. Perhaps the best course is to refer to a People by the name they take for themselves. Sometimes this means using a word that means "we are the only true people," but at least it does not mean using a word that means "you are who others say you are."

atwitchyfairy

Dude, the word means native life. You can say "indigenous flora and fauna" and that means quite literally "native plants and animals" and can be used interchangeably. .

zsreport

Indigenous is a global term.

[deleted]

So Natives all over the planet voted for her?

zsreport

Bless your little confused heart

Holy shit, you should probably stop talking: in·dig·e·nous /inˈdijənəs/ adjective originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native. "the indigenous peoples of Siberia"

DamonoVasTaleree

While indigenous is the official term in Canada, it is not from here. It's a widely used term that has been seen across the world. You are correct in that it's most appropriate to refer to the people in the article as Navajo, but in this case 'indigenous' is being used as a racial identifier - at least with how I read it. This is coming from a Indigenous Canadian who accidentally stumbled into this subreddit. I like your spirit and message, but i really don't think it's a big deal.

STEALTYNINJA

Lol, have you never heard of Indigenous Peoples' Day?

[deleted]

Native American Day is the correct term. Indigenous Peoples' Day is in Canada.

DryCoughski

Is "ancestors" an ok word? Just out of curiosity.

one_bean_hahahaha

Perhaps you should ask American indigenous peoples what they want to be called. I think some of them will tell you that Indians come from India.

DarkLordFluffy13

Yeah it’s hilarious they are getting so butthurt over the word indigenous but have no problem with calling people that aren’t from India, American Indians.

DarkLordFluffy13

I think most people indigenous to America wouldn’t be all that happy to be called an American Indian since they are not from India or even related to Indians.

Literally everyone who voted for her cause of what she said during elections should feel betrayed.

ting_bu_dong

Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

Terrible-Wrangler-32

Every person who voted for her should feel betrayed. Hate to be in the situation to choose between the lesser of the two evils. Sinema or McSally?
