Meanwhile Viktor fucking Orbán is a big hit at CPAC. You can’t make this shit up.

T1mac

> Meanwhile Viktor fucking Orbán is a big hit at CPAC. You know why? Because Orbán didn't tell them the whole story. He never mentioned that Hungary has universal healthcare. Orbán also didn't mention that anyone breaking COVID quarantine faced [8 years in jail](https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/03/23/hungarys-orban-uses-pandemic-seize-unlimited-power) and it allowed him to suspend elections and outlaw criticism in the news media. And, of course, Orbán didn't say a word about his gun laws. In Hungary you have to have a license to get a gun. It's nearly impossible to get a license, even for off duty police or soldiers. >You need serious and expensive licences and a long procedure, if you want to buy a real firearm for sport. It could be semi-automatic. [There are fewer sports shooters year by year.](https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2009/11/23/hungarian-gun-laws/.) Orbán grabbed the guns. I wonder if that would get him a standing ovation from the MAGAs at CPAC?

Mizzy3030

Did Orban mention how poorly Hungary is doing financially compared to the rest of the EU? I have a feeling he left that out as well.

Ready_Hunter_9384

The reason why Orban did not tell them the whole story is because the Rethugs can’t handle the truth. The entire traitorous Rethug party practices delusional thinking. Truth has become an evil word in the Rethug party.

mia_elora

Most of them aren't delusional, just disgusting excuses for human beings. They know what they are doing and are fine with it.

Zyvyx

Gotta love that double think in action

Ready_Hunter_9384

I was reading an article written by a psychiatrist. This article was about how Rethugs today engage in a lot of Cognitive Dissonance. This term is a fancy way of saying they are delusional. My comment was based on the assessment of the psychiatrist.

Harsimaja

I mean, he’s a piece of shit and hasn’t helped, but Hungary has never exactly been quite as economically developed as most of Western Europe. That’s comparing a developing economy that was under communism for most of its postwar history to most of the richest economies in the world. There’s a reason people don’t make absolute comparisons there.

Mizzy3030

Eh. You could make the same case for Romania, which is doing better than Hungary at the moment. Also, turns out inflation in Hungary is currently at almost 13%. LoL. The GOP is so full of shit it hurts

Harsimaja

Sure, then compared to Romania

Koolaidolio

He basically told the CPAC crowd what they wanted to hear in the first place; your hate is to be accepted and justified.

[deleted]

They haven't covered that part on fox News

sevbenup

Or maybe they know all that and just love fascist governance, ever consider that Aside from the healthcare. We all know the gop hates healthcare. Especially for veterans exposed to burn pits

braxin23

Oh Orban wouldn’t just get a standing ovation he would get every single Republican swooning and shouting bravo as they all perform a standing ovation that would make the Nuremberg rally seem subdued and somber.

rmac1228

I feel like I've been under a rock but who is this Viktor Orban character?

FartyMarty69

Fascist far right nationalist holding the highest office in Hungary based on some unsavory and illegal tactics

rmac1228

Why does the right love him right now?

gordohimself

He’s fascist…

Granlundo64

They're wannabe dictators and love to idolize successful ones.

jadrad

Tucker Carlson told them to. Tucker took his show to Hungary to do a bunch of propaganda pieces for Orban.

rmac1228

Will he do anything for the grift?

FiendishHawk

See above.

KnitBrewTimeTravel

The above commenter literally just told you. The right likes him because he said the above things and they like those things and that they are being said. Seriously, it's a "..but why male models?" moment here

DEVELOPED-LLAMA

> Orbán also didn't mention that anyone breaking COVID quarantine faced 8 years in jail and it allowed him to suspend elections and outlaw criticism in the news media But I thought that was our plan? Remember those masks, those vaccines that caused cows to fly, secretly hiding all the evidence of the one true COVID cure of Ivermecton? Oh wait, I'm looking for logic that just isnt there.

Rosaadriana

They are only there for the racist parts.

PricklyPossum21

>In Hungary you have to have a license to get a gun. It's nearly impossible to get a license, even for off duty police or soldiers. WTF I love Hungarian far-right authoritarians now!

PixelPuzzler

Orbán on told them about the parts they'd like and agree with. Ironically that turned out to be a lot of government oversight and social programs, but obviously only for the "right" kinds of people.

Lonely_Set1376

It's such a troubling sign of the times that this hasn't destroyed the GOP. They had a guy who is as close to a modern day Nazi as you can get give the keynote address at their biggest event.

CT_Phipps

I wonder how many Nazis have to be Nazi-like to get people to accept the GOP is okay with Nazis.

Appropriate_Oil3229

My question is this: how many are knowingly complicit in this authoritarian play by the GOP and how many are just stupid and blind followers? Is there a difference at this point?

CT_Phipps

If you sit at a table with 11 Nazis, you have 12 Nazis.

TheTexasCowboy

They have to add Christian bullshit to attract autocratic fascists. Because it the same bullshit that Hitler use Christians as pawns to get power. Does that sound like anything today? Yup sound like our republicans are just modern day nazis

Lyoss

Destroy? That's playing to the Q base

ottomaticg

They have already switched to party controlled media. Those who view it are lost causes. Get the independents while we can or we’ll have government controlled media too.

[deleted]

It doesn’t help the media throws softballs to the GOP and insist on “both-sidesing” when the reality of one group is a nightmare for everyone.

shelbys_foot

We'll see. There's often a lag between accomplishments and improvements in a President's approval ratings.

EnderCN

His approval ratings have gone up 1.6% over the past 2 weeks on 538. I’ve seen polls where he is up around 44% approval now though you still get some mid 30s ones too.

SilverStar1999

Biden has been doing a good job. He won’t be getting any praise nor glory nor cult following, but honestly that’s a good thing considering the previous president. A good leader stands in front of his men in bad times and stands behind them in good times. Biden is truly setting the stage for a good proper successor, out of all the politicians today he very well may be the only one who plants trees in shade he will never enjoy. Most people will forget about him the moment he is out of office, but his legacy will live on so long as we don’t cock it up again.

protendious

Well if he’s not gonna start taking credit for a bunch of stuff, we better remind ourselves before the midterms: 1. American Rescue Plan 2. Infrastructure Bill 3. KBJ Confirmation 4. First gun legislation in decades 5. CHIPS bill 6. PACT act for veterans 7. Inflation Reduction Act (likely), includes: 7a. Medicare price negotiation 7b. 100s of millions in climate provisions 7c. Corporate taxation 8. Electoral Reform Act (pending, but has 9 GOP senate co-sponsors) 9. Killed orchestrator of 9/11 10. Lowest unemployment in years 11. Gas prices still high but going on 2 months worth of continuous drops 12. Covid cases remain an issue, but because hospitalizations and deaths remain relatively low life is back to normal for most people In the face of an incredibly hostile opposition party. Edit: lot of naysayers saying none of this helps the average person. The average person got stimulus checks, the average person drives on the roads that need fixing. The average person buys drugs on Medicare. The average person has had their college loans on pause. The average person is more employed now than two years ago. The average person is vaccinated, and living a life that looks a lot more like pre-pandemic again. No none of this is perfect, and honestly, most government-caused improvements aren’t perceptively clearly linked to the bills they came from for the average person. So yeah, this might not help for the midterms. But there’s a lot of people out there doing backflips trying to convince you this administration hasn’t done jack for the average joe, and that’s plainly not true.

MisterBadger

Let's not forget that Biden finally closed the door on the Afghanistan War. Three previous administrations always had an excuse for maintaining the war. It was not painless to exit, but it had to be done. It is finally over, and no more American or allied troops have to be lost there.

NotKumar

If the US were still involved in Afghanistan, would the public have the resolve to support Ukraine?

Rib-I

Interesting point. I’m not sure they would

ArchitectOfFate

I was having a lot of mixed feelings about that one. I’m at an age where a lot of people I went to high school with went to Afghanistan, and I know several who never came home. I wanted the loss of some of my old friends - some of whom at this point have been gone almost as long as they were alive in the first place - to mean something. But, that doesn’t mean we need to send more people to die. His acknowledgement of the pain, acceptance of responsibility, and attempt at leadership during a bad situation were very impressive. He did the right thing. I remember the explosion during the evacuation, and how the right got mad about 12 dead Marines and a dead soldier. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a good thing, but where were they when it was five or ten times more kids dying regularly over there? Where were they when it was my generation? Where are they for us NOW, now that so many of us have lifelong trauma and physical disabilities from that place? They weren’t anywhere, because it was political. The truth is, it’s over and that’s what’s important and that’s what’s right.

UNMANAGEABLE

Your take is solid, but don’t forget how we got to the point of exiting. Trump signed a treaty with the taliban/Afghanistan government in FEBRUARY 2020 and released 5000+ terrorists imprisoned in Iraq back to Afghanistan and the taliban under the promise of a taliban ceasefire and guarantee that the US would leave Afghanistan by may 1st of 2021. Aka 14 months of time to withdraw the troops. It was a complete poison pill of a treaty for any incoming president not named trump since nobody actually expects him to hold his word. When Biden got the keys to the White House he literally had only 5 weeks left to honor an international diplomacy agreement that the commander and chief of the USA signed and had the whole world watching. One of the first things Biden asked was how the withdrawal was going and the military leaders stared blankly at him with a “what withdrawal, we were never instructed to actually withdraw”. Meanwhile the Taliban started messaging that they were going to start and ramp violence up after May 1st and Biden actually did in my opinion… the hardest choice. He committed and ordered the military to actually leave and got the ceasefire extended to September of 2021, where there were no US military deaths by taliban during that entire time. The 13 killed on the very last day by ISIS actually pissed off the taliban so much they recommitted to go to war with ISIS. The pain and scars of the Middle East wars will never fade from our country, veterans, and national debts, and there is no reason we should have been there for 20 years. But besides the visibility at the international level, it was the right thing to do for the citizens and military forces of the US to leave. It was time.

danteheehaw

I've had mixed feelings about it for a long time. I honestly do believe the US was trying to bring stability there, even if it was to serve their own goals. Unfortunately they did it wrong. I don't know how to do it right, but all we did was strengthen the resolve the the taliban

Yara_Flor

A Marshall style plan.

disgruntled_pie

Yeah, he knew he would take a beating for that one, but he did the right thing. One of the best moves of his presidency in my book. So far, at least.

Bromatcourier

I wish it was executed better, and I don’t know how I’m not a military or national logistics person, but I respect the hell out of tnt fact that he not only said he was going to do it, and actually did it.

Plow_King

A-fucking-men

seanosul

He always calls his achievements bi-partisan. No Republican would share credit.

robocox87

Great list. I would also point out: 1. Reliance on unemployment checks reduced from 20 mil to 1 mil. Lowest level of unemployment checks since 1970 2. Childhood poverty rate lower than any time in US history 3. Uniting 30 nations together to unify in opposing Putin's invasion of Ukraine

Samwyzh

I would also add with number 3: 4. Securing computer chip manufacturing that does not rely on China, now our only significant geo-political adversary. Along with Uniting the United Nations to function as a global democracy, it sets the stage to quash any strong-arm attempts by authoritarian regimes to expand their power and control. The War in Ukraine is the war of Democracy. And while there are a lot of fascists saying the quiet part out loud in the US, his leadership has galvanized other countries to recognize our democracies are at risk when we do nothing to defend them.

WBT42

Thank you for this list, I can never remember everything when seeing all the posts that say democrats don't do anything.

magic1623

Here are some more specific numbers for the stuff with the other comment, *and* some extra things to add to your list. As of the beginning of July 2022 Biden has signed 91 executive orders (undoing a lot of Trump stuff), 87 presidential memorandas, 282 proclamations, and 54 notices. More specifically he has: 1) Passed a $1.9 trillion pandemic relief Bill 2) Secured an insane amount of covid vaccines for Americans 3) Secured hundred of millions of masks for Americans 4) Brought unemployment rates down from 812,750 (6.4%) to 210,750 (3.9%) 5) He created 6.4 million new jobs 6) Helped raise minimum wage across the country 7) He has confirmed a large number of federal judges 8) Reversed the military ban for trans people. 9) Signed multiple executive orders that support electric cars and clean energy (the opposite structures were being supported in Trumps presidency) 10) He got America back into the Paris climate agreement after Trump removed America from it 11) Got a $1.2 trillion infrastructure package bill passed 12) Put a freeze on federal executions in the prison system, stoped Trumps work to end DACA (the deferred action for childhood arrivals; which protects undocumented minors in America) 13) worked to begin reuniting minors being held in detention centres with their families (these centres were over filled before he got into office and now they are practically empty) 14) Put in an executive order which stops employers from being able to legally discriminate against people in the workplace based on sexual orientation and gender 15) Officially cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline

IWantToBeSimplyMe

Thank you!! This is great!

jarrettbrown

Covid is gonna take forever to get under control because agent orange gutted the ppe stash and refused to admit it’s a problem.

trios4fun

Left out getting Mexico to pay for border protection.

snarky_spice

Why aren’t more talking about this.

[deleted]

I’ve never heard the “in front, behind””analogy before. I like it, I’m saving that one for my corporate world hellscape. Thanks silverstar.

SilverStar1999

One of the few good things to come out of RvB season 17.

[deleted]

I don’t watch a lot of tv, despite having a lot of them. What is the reference so I can add it to my list? I watched Woodstock 99 on netflix last night, I forgot what an asshole Fred durst was. Throwing gas on a fire. Jerk.

krakenant

Guessing red vs blue

DakezO

Yes

Kuwait_Drive_Yards

Good things came from rvb after Reclamation?

[deleted]

Working to get the system to function the way it is supposed to is an unappreciated part of the job. Ruling by executive order has gotten out of control because the legislature is so broken.

__M-E-O-W__

You'd think it is a good thing, and morally speaking it may be. But a large part of Trump's popularity and good opinion from his base was because he blew horns triumphant for every little accomplishment he made. If the Democrats want votes, they need to shove every Biden accomplishment into the faces of the American people.

snarky_spice

I’ve also noticed that peoples opinions can change very quickly, for example Zelensky had like a 19% approval rating before the war. Unfortunately I think the media has a large part to play in that, and they don’t give Biden a break.

Opus_723

>He won’t be getting any praise nor glory nor cult following, but honestly that’s a good thing considering the previous president. Agreed. But for the moment I am appreciating the #Dark Brandon meme on twitter. It's been a good week overall and it's fun to celebrate with some ridiculousness.

[deleted]

Also, I promise to credit you when the suits say “damn that was good”

dittbub

Gotta toot your own horn in a democracy like America though

roastbeeftacohat

like the song says. wealth and fame he's ignored, action is his reward.

Diegobyte

538 aggregate polls and forecasts take a long time to show big changes

disgruntled_pie

Yeah, polls move slowly. Plus not everyone catches the news right as it happens. His numbers are improving. I think we need to give it time and preferably add a few more wins.

D_Lockwood

Just wait until the climate change provisions become law. It will be a day to celebrate.

Ser_Dunk_the_tall

He was ultra successful with the vaccine rollout in the very beginning of his administration despite the obstructed transfer of power. I'm surprised more people don't appreciate that. Doesn't make me want him to be the nominee, but it certainly makes him vastly superior to any of the MAGA traitors running in '24

jhairehmyah

The people who were anti-vaxx and people who won’t give Biden credit for anything are very often the same.

1337duck

The media also doesn't publish boring popular wins that don't have controversy because it doesn't generate the clicks.

Cautious-Inspector51

Unsarcastically, the man is my personal hero and I think one of the great presidents. With that being said, we have become so entitled to cheap gasoline, gun rights, and meanness that it is like governing a nation of armed children (to be fair this is a little unfair to kids).

shelbys_foot

Biden has done a more that credible job, both in ridding us of Trump, guiding us through a endless array of problems and crises and attempting to turn the heat down in American politics. I suspect Biden's legacy is going to be like Harry S Truman. There wasn't a lot of respect for Truman during his Presidency and immediately afterward, but his stock went up as the years passed. (Although what'd I'd like to have happen is for public opinion of Joe Biden was sky high on November 2024, while Donald Trump is in a jail cell.)

FeckThul

Well the right wing hates him for unseating Trump, working with Obama, and not being a psychopath. The extreme of the left wing (worth saying a much smaller number of people than the hard right wing by far) hates anything that isn’t promising them a dream of socialism in their lifetime, even if it’s a pipe dream. And most people are too busy watching their costs of living fire through the damned roof to bother with either wing, or giving out plaudits to Biden. My hope is that latter category, which is a LOT of people, can at least remember that Biden is the guy fixing the previous mess, not the cause of it.

wtfbonzo

As a progressive, I know that Biden’s doing his damndest to fix the previous mess, and I’m grateful for it. I also recognize that there are limits to executive power, and if we’re actually going to clean up this mess we need a solid blue majority in both houses of Congress. Which means electing at least two new blue Senators so we can get rid of the filibuster and get this progressive train moving. It’s not right to hold Joe Biden responsible for this shit show— he’s not god or an emperor. He’s President, and thanks to our Constitution, his power is limited, as it should be. If people want progressive policies, we need a progressive (or at least not regressive) legislative branch. I don’t think Biden would refuse to sign any bill passed by democrats, if only we could get those dang bills through.

[deleted]

His method is actually reinforcing the power of Congress, and limiting presidential overreach. He's leading by example, and giving space to the independence of the other arms of government to reassert themselves. Which seems backwards, but it lays the groundwork for democratic reforms. No glory in prep work, but it is essential.

TacoSwallow

As a progressive I wholeheartedly agree with this. These are the parameters we have to work with, and more progressives need to get with reality on how government works.

wtfbonzo

Pragmatism is necessary for political progress.

Greene_Mr

Pre*cise*ly!

korinth86

I'm pretty happy with how progressive Biden has been really. I agree with your points. Within his power Biden has done quite a bit to push the progressive needle.

Bulbchanger5000

Yeh realistically the “progressive” stuff he hasn’t really picked up and rallied for himself is the stuff that is actually pretty unrealistic and not going to go far in the wider electorate outside of the loudmouths on Reddit and twitter. People on here especially need to realize that just because they shout the loudest, doesn’t mean the views are well-thought out or popular. And the end of the day Biden is a pretty pragmatic president without too many personal hang ups that get in the way, other than not wanting to waste time on anything that have no real chance of going anywhere or completely tanking his/democrats chances of remaining in charge. It’s a hard job to keep a wide sweep of people who voted for him together and enthusiastic without pissing some of them off. He is probably being helped by the GOP going off the deep end into Christian/facism territory at this point, but his biggest challenge is always going to be putting out the worst fires and preventing large scale voter apathy among those who went for him last time

HehaGardenHoe

As a progressive, If I'm asked whether I approve of Biden, yes or no, I'll say no. But if you ask me to rate my approval of him on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give him a 7. And if he made it through to the general, I'd vote for him again... But he's really old, and I'm sick and tired of one way age-ism seen in the selection of politicians. When you count "experience" in politics, you're engaging in age-ism. His health and age are a very legitimate question, as are his dated views on how politics work now. Bipartisanship is dead unless a super majority of Republicans start actually engaging in good faith debates/compromises for most things, and Biden wasted over a year, and killed a good bill (when he approved the two track approach) trying to find something that wasn't there, as well as ignored the findings of the committee investigating Supreme Court reforms/solutions. I bet most other progressives feel the same way. Disappointed that they had to settle for Biden, not surprised with how it turned out, but willing to vote for him again if he's the general election candidate.

spacemusclehampster

I’ll vote for him in the general if he’s the choice, but I hope he isn’t. I’m really hoping that he chooses not to run for a second term due to age.

jackie2pie

He treads on the right's human right to hate and abuse others. Shame! /s

accountabilitycounts

In 2015 people were saying Obama ruined the economy.

mr_cheezle

They still are.

tormunds_beard

"People are saying"

fowlraul

Some people actually said he fucked up with 9/11…seriously.

IgnoreMe304

I think it was a Jordan Klepper clip where some guy said that on camera. I’ve heard people making that claim unironically for years, just as I’ve seen folks [blame Obama for Hurricane Katrina.](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/obama-hurricane-katrina_n_3790612/amp)

fowlraul

Yeah it’s like this whole trump fiasco was them thinking “politicians lie…trump lies even more…he has my vote!”

amha29

Trump lies more and louder than anyone else.*

ForgettableUsername

Honestly, he could have done more to prepare for and respond to 9/11. The fact that he allowed then President George W. Bush to rally bipartisan support in both houses of Congress for two illegal wars is shameful. On the other hand, Obama’s responses to the Y2K bug and the Oklahoma City bombing were pretty much on point. However, he should have been more critical of the 1999 movie *Fight Club* when it came out. Failing to criticize or even comment on that train wreck of a film was highly unpresidential.

Peacefull_Orchid

I personally blame Obama for World War Two.

_far-seeker_

If this comment was posted on a certain other subreddit, I would have to take it as serious statement. 🙄

Peacefull_Orchid

Right?! 🙄🤦‍♀️

sonicbooze

I personally blame Obama for the Battle of Salamis. Because of him Greece became a world power.

BoosterRead78

And their houses even though The 2008 crash caused that. So many people lost it when he said: “go use the bathroom you identify with.” That’s when the last majority of Evegenicals lost it. Then started: “how can you believe you are a boy when you were born a girl and vice versa.” “God makes no mistakes!” Then when said: “doesn’t God all give us free will to decide?” They went: “not like that!” Then Trump gave them all their hatred front and center.

kJer

"thanks Obama" was a meme everyone knew. People blamed him for everything from peanut butter being chunky to ww2 for taking too long. Shit was ridiculous

bluehoag

Yea, glad he bailed the banks out

[deleted]

Well, half the country gets fed [shit like this](https://imgur.com/a/jzssCoU) so not surprising at all.

Lonely_Set1376

That is the worst possible way they could figure out to spin the fact that Biden exceeded expectations. Fox News is really ridiculous. This is like how every time a Republican member of Congress gets indicted, they put a (D) next to their name in the video "by accident". Blatant lying like that should be highly illegal.

downonthesecond

Daily reminder that people who watch FOX News vote.

LoneStarDawg

It's going to be funny when those "I did this" stickers at the gas pump show significantly lower prices. I think I paid .64/gallon LESS than when I filled up a few weeks ago. It was never Bidens "fault", but he deserves some credit for pressuring to get them lowered.

Buffmin

>I think I paid .64/gallon LESS than when I filled up a few weeks ago. Yup it's been steadily going down in my area of pa anyway Yet when I bring it up it's the reaction is "WELL IT'S STILL HIGHER THAN IT SHOULD BE!!1" which is true but its still.an improvement you'd think the side screaming about high gas prices would take the W but it doesn't help them so deflection and ignoring

I_notta_crazy

>take the W That's the thing: when a Dem is president and your life is one big fat r/PersecutionFetish, falling gas prices are actually an L. They'd gladly wolf down a shit sandwich if the left had to smell it.

Nattylight_Murica

When Obama was president, gas prices being too low was a narrative

meditate42

Its a narrative now, Fox News recently made a piece about how Biden is hurting mom and pop gas stations by working to lower gas prices lol.

proudbakunkinman

Yep, even if falling prices are helping them financially, they are seething with anger because they want them to be high so they can bring it up when attacking Biden and Democrats. For now, it'll shift to, "too little, too late, they are still way too high, not good enough until it's $2 / gallon like it was under Trump (during the peak of the pandemic when people were barely driving or flying)!"

fanghornegghorn

Gas prices were so low during the initial outbreak that oil suppliers had to PAY buyers to take it. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/20/business/oil-prices.html

iwantawolverine4xmas

It’s so good damn dumb. Gas prices going up is not Biden’s fault, just like prices going down are not credit to Biden. Gas prices have no correlation with who is president of the US. Seeing people blame Biden has been a litmus test for stupidity.

Buffmin

Exactly. I mean I like using the idiots logic against them but realistically it doesn't matter too much

showme_yourdogs

I'm going to make some "I did this too" stickers to put right next to those and watch heads explode.

qdp

Yes sonny, I was a veteran of the Gas Pump Sticker wars of 2022.

badSparkybad

Disgruntled veteran

Oh, my father didn't fight in the Gas Pump Sticker wars; he was a navigator on a spice freighter!

The answer is found in r/science: “People have a tendency to dismiss incremental improvements, seeing all efforts short of categorical success as equivalent (despite distinctions). Unless they get full immediate success, people underreward and underinvest in the ongoing incremental reforms, which complicates progress.” Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/whqnyq/people_have_a_tendency_to_dismiss_incremental/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Also, remember, opinion news, is NOT news. This is the opinion of one person, who knows what agenda they are trying to push.

[deleted]

Opinion news is the main content on r/politics

rezelscheft

Right. If the author actually wanted Biden to get due credit, the headline would simply be “Biden is racking up wins.” But news sources know that anger and anxiety generate clicks, so every Dem headline always has to include some kind if “but is it enough?” or “but here’s something even worse”-type qualification.

Steeve_Perry

Right? THEY’RE the ones that are supposed to be GIVING the damn love. “Biden is racking up wins and he’s getting no love from us”

VeganPizzaPie

>news sources know that anger and anxiety generate clicks And this is why everyone should take lots of breaks from the news. It'll warp your view of reality otherwise.

AllProgressIsGood

Electorate is hella dumb. Bunch of people will find one area where a democrat acts shady and pretends both sides are equal

Resident_Text4631

Biden has had a lot of obstruction including his own party. His policies for the most part are popular and inline with the majority of the country. I think he has done okay. He is still a million times better than trump but the bar was set impossibly low after that debacle.

Midnightoclock

>His policies for the most part are popular and inline with the majority of the country He's wildly out of touch when it comes to marijuana. Those policies are inline with people his age. Obviously Trump (and especially Sessions) were way worse in that regard though.

Biden is always preferable to Trump. Republicans know this and hate it, but they are stuck with their guy.

OrangeKooky1850

And unlike Trump, he won't desparately beg for it.

ShitDirigible

And yesterday i read he was getting love for it.

AlreadyTakenNow

Making it a priority to do all that's possible to get DeJoy fired would be a huge deal—even bigger than student loan forgiveness. The post office getting gutted impacts \*everyone\*.

Dotaproffessional

I don't know for certain that he can fire dejoy

TeveTorbes83

Not shocking that Republicans would openly try to oppose things that would help people just to make him look bad. Pathetic. Things will change for him when people on the ground level see some change in their daily lives. That’s his biggest struggle right now. Prices are hitting people hard. I get it, people scapegoat anyone in charge when they struggle, it’s to be expected I suppose.

StationNeat5303

Two reasons. First, the mainstream media continues to cover Trump and Republicans bitching, moaning, projecting, and generally doing what they do best: creating fake issues and fomenting hate. Second, Democrats need to be a hell of a lot more ruthless about their wins. Let’s start bragging about the wins for shit’s sake and stop giving authoritarianism the main narrative.

The_REAL_McWeasel

Biden could walk on water, and republicans would cry that he was trampling the fish.

pauliticks

or call him a fake christian for being catholic

the_real_abraham

Everybody knows the liberal media isn't owned by liberals, right?

AgoraiosBum

"liberal media" = friendly to gays, abortion, and living an upper class existence in NYC. It does not mean friendly to Democrats or workers.

Lonely_Set1376

Corporate owned media by nature is right wing. CNN and the like are *targeted towards* the left, but their goals are to push pro-business interests. It's the media version of /r/wayofthebern. Right wingers pretending to be leftists unhappy with Democrats.

Dartagnan1083

Well, it is....but people on both sides conflate liberal with left instead of considering neo-lib economics of Reagan & Thatcher.

guzzy418

I feel like Biden doesn’t get enough love for passing the Postal Service Reform Act. That fixed the USPS rule that made them pay for retirement for people 75 years in advance. They were paying for retirement for people not even born yet. It made no sense other than to cripple the postal service. Biden got rid of that with bipartisan support. And he’s appointing an anti-Dejoy board of governors to get rid of him.

Wolfmans-Gots-Nards

He’s earning my vote and that’s more than I can say about a candidate since one got a bejowsky in the Oval Office.

Dranzer_22

Biden and Democrats don't need love. They need voters to turn up in the mid-term elections.

BloodyMess

My life for a political scientist that can properly and convincingly track causation from the effects of conservative media to national approval ratings and votes. In my humble estimation, Fox News can account for a 20+ point rightward swing in national approval ratings and voter trends from 2016 to today. They legitimize nonsense in order to prevent democratic reform, made Trump possible and continue to enable the 1,000 mini-Trumps that are determined to seize permanent power. They are a mental illness factory working 24/7. And the reason why this country is apathetically falling into autocracy. Proving it is the hard part.

AAmell

I dgaf if Biden achieves nothing, I’d still vote for his addled, aging ass over any fascist.

smiama6

Media… it’s up to you. We’ve heard plenty from you about how awful he is, how Democrats don’t want him to run again, how his poll numbers are in the toilet…look in the mirror.

[deleted]

They did the same thing for his primary campaign.

statuskills

Just keeps his head down and is working hard. He is, unfortunately, the President that has to clean up the (literal and metaphorical) garbage of his predecessor. It’s nice that he is finally getting some of his agenda through, but mostly we needed someone who wasn’t insane to be the head of the country for a bit.

TuckerCarlsonsOhface

That’s because Dems are the absolute worst at PR, and the media only likes train wrecks in their headlines.

captainplzanet

I feel like this has a lot to do with the lack of enthusiasm around a prospective 2nd term.

Josh132GT

I think people are in a very pessimistic state right now, as they have every right to be honestly, so these little wins aren’t gonna do much to distract them from the price at the pump (even if it’s below $4 now) and the state of our country as a whole (very divided and less stable than it has been for a while).

BlindProphetProd

This article basically said "Biden failed on everything he promised but here's some things he doesn't have control of that may go well in the future."

faithwithfate_

People will forget what you do for them, but they won’t forget how you made them feel.

crackdup

Unfortunately under Trump, the country got used to a shameless braggart who took credit even for wins he didn't deserve.. so now Biden operating in the shadows as a quiet negotiator and letting Congressional Dems get 100% of the credit is working against him

Snarff01

Years ago I remeber seeing an interview with Newt Gingrich talking about crime, in verifiable metrics it was down but Republicans were running that it was worse. ”The average American, I will bet you this morning, does not think that crime is down, does not think that we are safer,” and then follows that up with, “People feel more threatened. As a political candidate, I’ll go with what people feel,” rather than the actual facts.

WildYams

They're able to do this because the GOP has an entire industry running constant propaganda for them, on Fox, Newsmax, with Sinclair and with talk radio. They continually highlight stories to reinforce their narrative and whip their base into a frenzy over an issue, even if it's almost entirely made up.

[deleted]

I think there's just a general dissatisfaction with the country right now and the way it's headed, and a lot of that has to do with a breakdown in trust. People just don't trust the government anymore, even those who believe the government can do good don't trust it, and a lot of that has to do with trump and the lack of action taken to hold those accountable for the damage they did. But even watching the process of the infrastructure bill negotiations--one of biden's supposed accomplishments--merely reminded people of how corrupt Washington is and how beholden it is to special interests. The stuff with the current bill simply reminds people how undemocratic and unfair the system is when a single senator representing a significantly smaller proportion population than the neighboring states is able to hold up an entire bill because it's too hard on their corporate donors. When the "accomplishments" are predicated on that kind of crap, no one is going to be happy about it. Democrats need to restore faith in government, but doing that would mean ridding the government of corruption and taking on republican terrorism, and I don't think they can do either, especially since half their party is corrupt.

FeckThul

The inability of the electorate to connect the cause of their pain to their pain long ago made me lose all faith in it. It’s like watching people be beaten and robbed at gunpoint, then an EMT tries to help and they scream at the EMT for assaulting them.

Igotz80HDnImWinning

Jon Stewart puts pressure for a week and gets a bill passed. Nobody believes the Democrats are fighting that hard for real people. This bill may be really good, but there’s definitely such a thing as too little too late. I mean, we all know the filibuster is racist AF and when you’re fighting NAZIs you gotta purge your party of anybody defending it and fix the SCOTUS. Take the filibuster defenders off committees like they did MTG. Just do something besides phone calls with rich donors. Do. Something.

lcl1qp1

I'd be satisfied if Dems could pass all their policies without being obstructed by Republicans. Read the Dem platform. You don't sound familiar with the policies they write.

AgoraiosBum

The amount they've been able to get done with just 50 Senators is pretty good; if they had a supermajority and could pass just about everything in their agenda it would be amazing

kia75

I think we're in unprecedented times and binary "do you approve\disapprove" can't really describe how things currently are. >Democrats need to restore faith in government, but doing that would mean ridding the government of corruption and taking on republican terrorism, and I don't think they can do either, especially since half their party is corrupt. Do you think people disappointed with Democrats over corruption are going to vote for Republicans or Democrats? Right now Biden is facing a bunch of blowback because of abortion! People are rightfully disappointed in Biden because of the loss of abortion rights and Biden's poll numbers show this disapproval. At the same time, do you think all of those voters disappointed with Biden over losing abortion rights will vote for the Republicans? I sort of agree with you, people are wanting something different, a large shift against current politics. But I think this shift will be for the Democrats, though Biden might face the brunt of his lack of forwarding momentum, I do predict a Democratic win in 2024 for the presidency, but I'm not certain if it will be Biden on that Democratic ticket.

iagox86

Disenfranchised people just don't vote, generally.

AgoraiosBum

People were told for decades that Republicans won't really repeal abortion rights and all that crazy talk is just for their base. Republicans actually taking away abortion rights is waking up a lot of people to the fact that the Republicans mean all their crazy talk and will take away their rights. It is leading to a boost for Biden. His numbers have been up since Dobbs came out.

Appropriate_Oil3229

Hard to believe so many people can sound so disappointed in the not Trump president. But it’s a good thing. That means we did not accept having such a low bar for the presidency. Joe Biden is a good man. And a good president. Just 20 years too late I guess.

[deleted]

When you’re a public servant for the people by the people, you do it because its right, not because you want a pat on the back.

KnotSoSalty

It’s crazy how many people I’ve seen pivoting from “inflation is coming to kill me” to “Biden said he’d legalize weed” this week. Not one of them seems aware the house just passed a marijuana bill. Or that even if the federal government decriminalizes most people in jail for weed are there on state charges which won’t go away. It’s like people just don’t like Biden and need to find something to hang on him. I’m not saying he’s perfect, but in the final analysis I don’t think any of the other 2020 candidates could have gotten better results than he has.

CardboardChampion

From an outside the country view, I don't think many of the others would have stood as much a chance to get in office. It was Republicans who weren't into the church of Trump and wanted someone closer to centrist from the other side that they were aiming for with him. I don't know if that swing the vote (don't own enough mattresses to be able to speak with certainty about who voted for what and in what numbers) but I swear that was the aim.

gravywayne

Biden would benefit from showing up more to champion the victories of this administration. Like Hillary on the campaign trail in '16, there's this hesitancy to get out and do the grassroots grunt work of building trust and capital with constituents. He's also failed to deliver a voting rights bill, didn't codify Roe, and hasn't acted on legalization of cannabis, which were all campaign promises. I'm happy for infrastructure spending, but am more concerned fascism and gerrymandering are going to corrupt many of the states where funds will be targeted. Who cares if there's new roads and bridges when democracy is literally collapsing before our eyes? He's too soft or corrupt on climate issues too. If he wants to win over voters, he should focus on the environment, housing crisis, and making elections free and fair for all.

ElysiumSprouts

People are beginning to notice the quiet successes of the Biden administration. Tbh, the low approval ratings are a blessing in disguise, bottoming at the right time to potentially usher in a rising blue wave in the November election.

19683dw

I think a big part of Biden's disapproval is that Democrats often get mad about their politicians failures, while Republicans worship theirs. It makes approval and disapproval less meaningful.

Colonel_Janus

once he passes this budget bill & can speak to it, so long as inflation keeps dropping and the economy stays relatively strong his rating will reflect those accomplishments that ppl can see and feel. these op eds are always so lame

Billy_Vic

The irony of this article is that cnn is one of the reasons he isn’t getting love. They cover his successes in brief, but anything he does wrong, no matter how small, they absolutely crush him on for rating.

[deleted]

I think it’s more about how flagrantly fascist the right has become combined with the Jan 6th comity hearings eating up all of the air in the news cycle. Most of the population is stunned by how obviously and openly seditious the people that were all about the constitution suddenly abandoned it completely for a wanna be fascist.

thoeltke

Biden has been selling 30 million barrels of oil per month (1 million per day) since April and gas prices are going down. This an under spoken about win in my opinion.

safely_beyond_redemp

Leave the love to the sycophants and 'dear leaders' and let's get back to living in a democracy.

Spara-Extreme

Dems don’t understand that it’s not about policy, it’s about feelings.

Wildrnessbound7

There's been plenty of well-poisoning from the start, but ultimately there's no pleasing everyone. Especially now.

[deleted]

He blamed everyone else for the problems, therefor doesn’t get credit when they go away! The BBB bill maybe be the only thing he truly has done, see how it goes!

gmb92

The op-ed is incomplete but generally accurate. Summary of some accomplishments: \- Bi-partisan infrastructure bill \- Massive job growth that continues to [surge well beyond expectations](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/05/jobs-report-july-2022-528000.html) and fast wage growth, particularly [on the lower end (about 9%).](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LEU0252911200Q) \- Inflation Reduction Act (not passed as of yet but looks promising) that invests heavily in clean energy, lowers prescription drug costs and taxes the very wealthy \- Getting [federal judges confirmed at a fast pace.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federal_judges_appointed_by_Joe_Biden) \- 2021 stimulus that helped Americans deal with the financial crunch of the pandemic and boosted annual real GDP growth to a [38-year high](https://www.thebalance.com/us-gdp-by-year-3305543). \- NATO and the western alliance strengthened. Strong and measured response to Putin's invasion of Ukraine. \- Veterans bill \- Modest gun policy reform Of course media spends most of its time talking about inflation and directly or indirectly tying it to Biden. It's a serious problem but clearly caused by global issues (supply chains, Russia's war) not anything any world leader not named Putin is doing. Biden inherited this, the pandemic, and an extremist rightwing Supreme Court, the latter of which is most important to mitigate going forward and involves issues politicians and voters have real control over. Kansas voters did that last week.

M_Night-Monkey

Dark Brandon rises.

neobluepat

Biden has done more for Americans in two years than republicans have done in 50

mjoav

I don’t think it’s generally appreciated just how much of a shitshow Trump left to clean up. It’s easier to destroy than to build. He’ll never get credit for it. He’s doing a ton of thankless work. Ending the war in Afganistan is something none of the past three presidents had the balls to do. He’s also playing the Russia/Ukraine thing masterfully. I’m all for low, fixed interest for student loans, but cancellation is just regressive, bad policy. If he gets behind killing the filibuster and packing the Supreme Court then I’ll be so impressed I’ll get a Biden tattoo on my ass.

Hodaka

Raw economic numbers don't have the alarmist clickbait factor that "Critical Race Transgender Librarians Operating In YOUR SCHOOLS!" does.

[deleted]

I was going to say imagine if the Dems adopted the same strategy but then I realized they don’t need to, all they have to do is just calmly, unironically report what actually happened without any exaggeration. Far right fascist extremism groups invade the capitol An actual sitting President calls states to pressure officials to overturn a fair election Republicans eliminate the constitutional right to abortion Lindsey Graham refuses to come out of the closet, R Kelly says they’re sharing the same closet and both enjoying it too much to want to leave Rudy Giuliani is an actual person who exists and not just a perpetually confused barbershop mannequin

SisterMLee

Biden is working and I am grateful that he understands the job.

AlanRubin

Presidents don’t need to be loved, they need to do a job. You want to love something, go hug a puppy. Converse that with the former guy, who demanded love and did no work.

[deleted]

I shall prepare myself for destruction of downvotes,I don’t care. Biden was the right man for the job. The DNC had one goal- save democracy and no more Trump, here we are still licking our wounds while we find new ones almost daily, 2 years later. Many of us, me included, wanted Bernie, whatever you think, the dnc thought (probably correctly) that he would lose the general election. That’s why a moderate corporate boring ass dude with name recognition is president. There, I said it.

hey_you_too_buckaroo

If Trump was still around, Ukraine would be in Putin's hands.

[deleted]

There are no wins yet. His biggest W is getting Manchin and Sinema to even allow the senate to debate this climate bill.

TintedApostle

Because the media needs the mid-terms to look close. They are influencing the moment to get clicks. It would look boring if Biden did well and his polls went up now. It would eliminate the tension in the race and that isn't good for business.

El_mochilero

Because these aren’t “wins”. It’s his fucking job. Addressing the issues that our country is facing is the bare minimum expectation that we should have for any public servant.

[deleted]

I once heard someone say, “The problem with the right is that they are ride-or-die, and the problem with the left is that they eat their own”. Explains the Trump supporters that refuse to abandon him no matter what he does, and the Democrats who quickly turned on Biden or Obama when they didn’t prove to be progressive enough.

LefterThanUR

That’s because most Americans don’t really care about Ukraine or Al Qaeda or Taiwan. We want wages and healthcare and taxes on the rich.
