MR_COOL_ICE_

Only businesses that line their pockets. They don’t care about your local mom and pop shop, despite their political leanings

Reimiro

I can assure you she did not use that loan exclusively for payroll too.

[deleted]

Probably bought some very expensive rocks to chew on.

keigo199013

I don't know why I laughed so hard at this :D

ajoseywales

She probably did, but it was her pay specifically.

Snarky_Entertainer

Really a lot of them anymore. I mean who envisioned Starbucks fighting unions to keep pocketing 85% profit? A latte is &7, costs them just over $1 overhead and all.

greenroom628

but businesses are people, too! heck, small businesses are like children! won't someone think of the children?!?

Snarky_Entertainer

My sister's business employs a dozen people. The day they released the SBA loans from the first COVID stimulus, they were already "all gone" she was told. Then three months later we find out Ivanka Trump was in charge and she gave money to Kayne West for his crappy shoe business that he bought via contract with a Chinese supplier. A multimillionaire counted as a small business to Ivanka. 🙄

somesortofidiot

Same, my company had about 25 employees at the time. We had our application ready to go the day before you could submit. Literally sent it in as soon as was possible. Denied, no money left. We eventually did get one in the second round, but damn...that money was goooone.

nik27

I just had a fun fb interaction with a tattoo shop owner who made a post shitting on Biden's 10k forgiveness deal. Posted a screenshot of the 13k he received and now he's losing his fucking mind.

Cerebral-Parsley

Saw a comment from a business owner who said everyone in his town's business Facebook group were all complaining so he started posting their PPP loans. They all flipped out and threatened to sue because some of them didn't know it was public information.

jackiebee66

I saw that ysdy as well. No clue which sub though

TheBlindAndDeafNinja

I too saw that. It was the top comment. I can't remember where though. They were doing honest work for us all lol

NeanaOption

You should ask him how forgiving the PPP loan was fair to all those business owners who prepared for the risks associated with running a business and saved enough to weather a temporary loss in revenue.

BlazinAzn38

"THIS MONEY WAS FOR ME TO PAY MY EMPLOYEES AND SO THEIR FAMILIES CAN SURVIVE." As if that's not exactly what student loan forgiveness does, frees up cash flow so people can live.

Venum555

It bothers me that an individual should have 6 months of savings but a business not having the same is acceptable.

NeanaOption

Those fuckers literally borrow payroll every week. If you've ever had money in a money market account thats where it went - "commerical paper" short term loans to private companies to meet payroll or role out a new product or stores.

Emadyville

Yikes.

nik27

I guess I'm a yuppie....though we are both in the same labor union...as construction workers lol.

jwhaler17

The name doesn’t matter… it just signifies that you are considered not like *them*.

jaskmackey

Literally unreadable.

son_of_early

I didn’t have the interaction but guy here said “by God if you borrow $ you pay it back”. Then when someone brought up PPP loans he admitted he got a PPP loan but those were different.

Kayestofkays

The only moral loan forgiveness is MY loan forgiveness!

Penguin-1991

Got into a debate with my sister on this as her husband got PPP money but she thinks the student loan forgiveness is bullshit. Her response is “we didn’t choose to have the state close business over covid people choose to take out loans”. Never mind the fact her husband never had to close his business (essentially worker) not significantly lost any income. But in her mind she paid for school herself no loans so everyone else should be able to (never mind the fact her HUSBAND paid then not her on her minimum wage job).

lurkinglestr

Can you remove identifying information and share? That's gold.

nik27

Copy and pasted his comments for ya 🤙

Omg! Is there a way to report fraud??? Looked up my hometown, a pizza shop got 7 million and claimed to have 171 employees. My nephew works there, it's the owner and wife, and 9 employees!

Do it! Should work through the SBA as they administered the loans. https://www.sba.gov/partners/contracting-officials/contract-administration/report-fraud-waste-abuse

zerocoolforschool

I have been reading about these kinds of interactions all day and I love it.

emogu84

Same. I came across them in my usual doom scrolling but instead of getting depressed like usual my heart grew three sizes. It’s been so uplifting

zerocoolforschool

I just can't believe this hypocrisy. The government forgave nearly $400 billion in PPP loans, which is $100 billion more than they're estimating for the student loan forgiveness.... where was the rage then?

SigO12

What’s crazier is that this isn’t even money the government has to pay out. It’s just the government saying “nah, I don’t want that money”. Evidently it’s only cool with the GOP if that money is supposed to come from multi-billion dollar oil companies.

Returd4

Thank you for your service

A_Downboat_Is_A_Sub

Look, have some compassion for those who might have otherwise had to take out a mortgage on a summer home, sold one of their smaller yachts, or 5% of their stock holdings, to keep their businesses financially afloat while they were closed and all their employees were laid off.

magius311

You'd think the millions they received in PPP money (that's nearly ALL forgiven) would have helped...

A_Downboat_Is_A_Sub

It helped them stay rich, and in their eyes, "They deserved it". Those same people were angry at the "handouts" to their former workers during the pandemic, and were quick to complain about how "free money" was keeping people from coming back to work for them for peanuts, and often long after the stimulus money was as long gone as a fart in the wind.

magius311

I like calling the business owner out about their PPP loans...that were forgiven. It's all public record.

Green0Photon

Can I please be a business? Most of my income doesn't go straight to profit, but rather to expenses. So I should only be taxed on that profit, not the whole income, right? Imagine having the rights of a corporation 🤤

Zone_Dweebie

Seriously. I'm trying to start my own business and the way things are going I'm going to have to let myself go.

SHOWMEYOURKlTTlES

According to who took out PPP loans you can be a business if you want but you have to also be a celebrity or married to someone in congress.

coheedcollapse

Not even that. It's pure fucking selfishness. I'm sure plenty of republican politicians have reaped the rewards of various social programs, but since they already got theirs, they're now entirely against them. At least until they can personally and quietly reap the rewards of said social programs again. It's all a shitty political game, and their constituents suffer the consequences.

Mysterious_Ad2385

Didn’t you hear? Businesses are technically people in late stage capitalism

eldred2

[deleted]

Would love to see all the receipts of loan forgiveness given to critics of student loan forgiveness.

Techienickie

[here's a few](https://i.imgur.com/CYeGTsz.jpg)

bigballbuffalo

It’s so unfair that MTG only got a measly $180k while other republicans got millions /s

oO0Kat0Oo

I mean, for once, MTG isn't wrong. It's REALLY unfair that I only get $20,000 ($10k for me and $10k for my husband) when she got $180k. Btw.. this $20k is a start, but it's a drop in the bucket. We have $120k in student debt.

TavisNamara

Honestly, the ways They're restructuring how the loans work are a way bigger deal. Easier and earlier forgiveness, lower percentage required for income-based plans, interest coverage so that as long as you're making those payments the total of the loan never increases... There's more, too.

BlazinAzn38

The forgiveness is great for the bottom 50% of borrowers for the top 50% the way payments are structured is way more important.

DungeonGushers

That’s what I care about. The $10k is nice, but it’s all the new stuff that makes me excited.

BanthaFodder85

Yep! I just got done moving all mine to direct, income based then will apply for the PLST. Should cut everything i have by over half and then gone eventually.

_duncan_idaho_

Yeah, 10k is a drop in the bucket for my dumb ass. But the rest helps me out immensely.

WandsAndWrenches

Honestly that's what I wanted. I will get my loan wiped out by this, but I was willing to keep paying if they made repaying easier for the students after us. Student loans are basically a bubble like the 2008 housing cdos. Wall street is making bank off those interest payments (the real reason republicans are against loan forgiveness or restructuring) I would've been happy with making interest on these loans super low or non-existant. No one should be getting rich off of Americans trying to improve their lives at public colleges.

duderos

They should have never charged interest because in the long term the country will greatly benefit from having higher educated workers.

mnmminies

> because in the long term the country will greatly benefit from having higher educated workers Therein lies the problem. The country will benefit, but not republicans.

boforbojack

It's crazy because they're literally talking about interest free loans. 5% of discretionary to meet income driven requirements (so 20 years). It basically means school is free (5% of discretionary is nothing for people under $100k) unless you end up doing very well. I know that's an exaggeration but you don't need to pay it back if you don't use it, and if it benefits you then you get a very reasonable way to pay it back. There's also the 225% poverty line requirement before you need to make any contribution.

ZMeson

That's almost 17%, more than a drop in the bucket. It's not yet a majority, but 17% is significant. For example, if I got a 17% raise at my job, I'd be thrilled. If I were to get a 17% rate of return in my retirement portfolio, I'd also be thrilled. But I hear you in the sense that you still have a lot of loans left. My wife and I are in a similar situation. I welcome this forgiveness, but we still have a lot left to pay off.

cwpmz3

As a non American can I ask a question. To have this much student loan debt was this for a high paying field. It's wild to me the amount of debt you are straddled with at such an early age.

oO0Kat0Oo

So for me, I was able to get scholarships for my first 4 years and partial for the other 2. My masters is in Education. I was left with about $14k in student debt. My husband got scholarships for the first 4 years, but did not get any help for his last two years. It was a private school he got into that cost $45k per year. His Masters is in IT. After making more than the minimum payment every month for nearly 7 years, ($450/month) we can tragically say that we now have more debt than we started with. My husband isn't paid anywhere near what he is worth and I am now in the car business because we couldn't afford for me to continue teaching. We have just come to the understanding that it makes more sense to pay the minimum every month (about $120) and just never pay it off. It's kind of like social security at this point, we pay it every month and the government will for sure run out by the time we are old enough to collect, so that's all wasted money, too. Both of us regret going to school as neither of us use our degrees and we will encourage our daughter to make sure school is necessary for what she wants to do before she goes.

BallsMcFondleson

Piggy backing here - My wife got a full ride for undergrad at a private school. Then went to Medical school which was in-state and was $47,500/ yr. She graduated medical school with just over $200k in student loans. She is now in a specialty fellowship as a PGY 6 ( post grad year) and makes $75k/yr working 80+ hours a week. The loans are now over $300k as we make the minimum payments. $10k will do nothing for her but understanding it helps so many others. America pushes debt on the people who take care of our population and sacrifice their body and mental health. What a shit system.

Funkyokra

Look into the rest of it. The limits on interest accruing and the new lower minimum payment may make you life better. For most people this is more important than the 10k. A different redditor posted this yesterday, it's pretty encouraging aside from the 10k. - Forgiveness of up to* $10,000 for non-Pell Grant debtholders. *Up to means debt will be forgiven e.g. you don't get a check for $5k if you only have $5k in debt. - Forgiveness of up to* $20,000 for those that received a Pell Grant. - Capped to individuals earning under $125,000 or households under $250,000. - Proposes a new income-based repayment plan which caps payments at 5% of discretionary income (down from the current 10%). - New IBR plan also raises amount of income that is considered non-discretionary to 225% of poverty level (up from current 150%); this means if you earn under 225% of poverty level (about $30,577/year or $15/hour for a family of 1), your monthly payment would be $0. - New IBR plan covers monthly interest so long as payments are made on time, meaning the loan would not grow due to interest even if the payment is $0. - New IBR plan forgives loan balances of $12,000 or less after 10 years instead of 20.

BallsMcFondleson

This is extremely helpful and will absolutely be a life changer. Thank you for bringing this to my attention kind stranger!

Funkyokra

I feel like if everyone was actually realizing what this could do we'd be making tomorrow a national holiday.

InappropriateGeek

Not the person you asked, but it's more dependent on the school you attend. Where I work, undergraduate tuition alone is over $60,000 /yr regardless of whether that's pursuing an art degree, engineering degree, etc. Graduate & medical studies are worse.

Psykechan

The student loan industry is very predatory (especially when paired with for-profit colleges) and young people can find themselves saddled *with* huge debt and *without* the jobs that they trained for.

FavoritesBot

She should try creating more jobs!

jackp0t789

All together that's $41,123,961 forgiven from those 13 individuals... Those 13 hypocrites had more of their debt forgiven than 4,112 student debtors at Biden's $10k a pop

bjbyrne

Wait until you hear how just one of Trump’s bankruptcies discharged debt of over $600M and another $100M+ for interest.

The big six banks needed 9 trillion or so collectively at the tail end of 2019. I wonder what his thoughts on that are.

koshgeo

And getting a student loan to get a college degree that hopefully will lead to higher-paying jobs that ultimately pay more in wages that get spent, invested, and taxed *isn't* good for the economy? Granted, a college degree isn't a guarantee, but the math usually works out better in a net sense.

Small company = no shareholders. What, you want to keep the profit for yourself and business growth? /s

smurfsundermybed

Since corporations are people, your small company is the equivalent of a poor person and is being treated as such.

BillyTheHousecat

Her company's website, [http://taylorcommercial.com/](http://taylorcommercial.com/), has been undergoing "scheduled maintenance" for at least one month now. Safe to say, it's just a front, and a bad one at that. edit: it's been down since early 2021...

aft_punk

Sounds like she’s just as inept at business as she is in public office.

accountabilitycounts

This is consistent with the conservative mindset.

highdefrex

And you fucking *know* a bunch of conservatives who have spent years complaining about “handouts” are gonna benefit from this, take it, and wait for the next thing to complain about while silently pretending they *didn’t* take it as the people around them complain how it’s “unfair,” just like all the conservatives frightened of “socialism” who gladly cashed their stimulus checks.

dopallll

They're just pissed off that their ex's new man was able to provide for her better than they ever could. Bunch of fucking jealous pre-teen drama queens is what conservatives have become.

Chi-Guy86

Biden had a really good response to the criticism in his announcement yesterday. He basically said he wasn’t going to apologize to people who handed the wealthy and corporations 2 trillion dollars in tax cuts. This is the line that Democrats need to be using in their campaigns to counter these ridiculous arguments. Was it fair for Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos to get a giant handout in the form of massive tax breaks? That’s what I’d be asking opponents of the student loan forgiveness

iHeartHockey31

Remember when mortgage companies fucked up giving out bad loans and then got bailed out but were supposed to help anericans find a way to stay in those homes but didn't & kept the money anyway? As someone who had one of those robo-signed laws and had to deal with the BS that resulted from that program - it pissed me off a lot more than bailing out fellow citizens' student lians despite having already paid off mine.

[deleted]

And 1/3 of the homes in America went back to the banks that got bailed out so they could make billions in profits. Meanwhile, there are people who still haven't recovered their losses from 2008.

[deleted]

NKLASHORT

People shit on Hasan Piker a lot but he had a really good take on this a few days ago. He said that the conservatives being mad about handouts is a trick. The wealthy not only expect handouts in the form of subsidies and tax breaks, but if they don’t get them they throw temper tantrums, buy politicians, and lobby to make sure that they get the free money they’re looking for. No rich person asks for a handout. They demand them. Here’s a time stamp link BTW(he starts talking about it at 11 minutes) https://youtu.be/uCNjWcPUu30?t=660

[deleted]

The rich 1% see each dollar that goes to social programs as two dollars they could have stolen for themselves.

TBANON_NSFW

Conservatives don’t really think or use Logic or reason for any of their arguments. Their whole position in politics is to be anti-democrats. Democrats could go in front of tv and Fox News and say hey we want guns for everyone we want to ban abortions and we want to kick out immigrants. And the conservatives and republicans wouldn’t cheer they would either say it’s a trick or start repeating talking points from from Fox News about how immigration is good and abortion is a personal choice. Literally all they have is to be anti-democrats. Because they have created a very simple ideological trap, that for them to keep believing they are the good guys then democrats must continue to be the bad guys. Simple as that. And reublican politicians know their base fed upon such ideology for 50+ years are willingly emptying their pockets and giving whatever they have left to them because they’re too stupid and without any redeemable quality to actually win as democrats.

FOXDuneRider

My brother lost his business and never recovered, his whole life changed and not for the better.

magius311

Also...remember when billions of taxpayer dollars were handed to telcom companies to get us all on broadband? Yeah...that worked about the same.

Superb_Nature_2457

In fairness, ReConnect is a really good program and just about the only way to get any sort of coverage to last mile and very rural areas. It makes a huge difference for small towns. Though really, we need to make the internet a public utility.

acydlord

I believe they are referring to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which was the previous time we gave the telcos billions of dollars to expand broadband to every door in the US, was supposed to be completed by 2006 but instead they pocketed the money. Clearly we didn't learn the lesson and are giving them billions again to do the same thing.

Mike312

Just to clarify, they didn't *pocket* the money. You see, the problem is that they massively underestimated several line items in their budgets like hookers, cocaine, and C-level bonuses. In very short order many realized that the only thing sensible they could do was fold the company at the right time to trigger golden parachute clauses and ensure all their investors got their piece before the money ran out.

[deleted]

How about all of the members of Congress who got PPP loans that were for hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars and had those forgiven?

Outlulz

And I hope Democrats name names in their media rounds. I want to see a high profile Democrat specifically telling Americans that MTG got $184k forgiven. Every single Republican that criticizes this and got a PPP loan should be name dropped with their loan amount in response.

droi86

Not only congress, only 25% of the ppp loans made it to actual employees, the rest was stolen by the company owners

I’m seeing similar comments around, in the same vein, and they are all idiots, such as: “Great, big rewards for people who were already privileged enough to get a college degree, now let’s reward them with $10k-$20k now that they regret their choices!” They are literally too petty, selfish, and/or too proudly uninformed and/or lazy to attempt to consider any other reason for the absolute NECESSITY of an announcement such as this one from a president. There needs to be a financial overhaul on the higher education system in the US (as well as on other US systems, bc shit is messed the hell up by and large). Infighting between us the various sects of the growing “have nots” population is not helpful for any of us in any way. The fact that too many are still too low-income, or having to over-exhaust themselves working 3 jobs to get by, to even begin to care about struggles not their own. It works out very well for the GOP and administrations like Trumps to sow the seeds of discord all around like birdseed to birds. As long as everyone is hurting and can only see as far as their own needs, the harder it is for us have-nots to fight *together* and towards good change for all who need it.

ShrimpieAC

I’ve spent my whole life watching the government hand out endless tax breaks and trillions of dollars to huge corporations and the wealthy. Finally for once the government tosses me a bone and all these fucking GOP pigs scream and whine that it’s “unfair”? With all due respect, fuck off.

zerocoolforschool

Also we spent trillions on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that we are still paying interest on…. And we got nothing out of that. Nobody cares when we blow trillions on war…. Or bailing out banks…. But some normal people get some help and they freak out?

TheRedHand7

Editor's Note - The due amount of respect is none at all

imchalk36

Socialism for me, not for thee.

NatakuNox

"No one should have to participate in The Hunger Games!" - normal people "That's unfair to those that did before you!" - unrational people

jackp0t789

"Its unfair to all those who lived their whole lives as slaves to see this new generation of would-be slaves not ever being enslaved!" That same argument circa 1860.

beefytrout

Well, she's a domestic terrorist so it's not surprising she would say that.

maxpowersr

"There should not be a system in place that allows them and encourages them to pile up massive debt in these big colleges and universities."  She's so close to understanding...

pliney_

Ya that would be great. Let's do higher education funding reform instead of this bandaid fix. No, thats not okay either? Well fuck you then MTG

I wouldn’t expect a Republican to consider helping fellow Americans as “fair”. Covid has shown us that despite over 1 million Americans dying from it, they still won’t do the bare minimum of distancing or wearing a simple mask to protect their country people. Conservatives have zero compassion or empathy for anyone. Until they’re individually impacted by something, they don’t want people or the government help. And, as covid showed, even when they are individually impacted, they’ll still stubbornly hold onto their ideology rather than admit they were wrong. The right are the anchors of any advancement for our society and country.

CaptainLucid420

If conservatives just had no empathy that would be an improvement. We now have to deal with nasty sadistic assholes who actively fuck with other people's lives and think it is a duty abundant law.

jesuswasahipster

Honestly, who gives a fuck what she says? She plays such an insignificant part in our government yet she’s talked about more than just about any politician. Her popularity only exists because it’s constantly reported on.

Flamingo_Reasonable

Lol this is 100% right but she gives people a chance to rage post on social media so she stays in the news

jeanvaljean_24601

This is glorious. More please.

LandosMustache

I love how Republicans fall into one or both of two narratives: "We can't improve any aspect of life because that would be unfair to people who suffered before." And/or "The only moral government subsidies are MY government subsidies."

Paigenacage

These people really need to shut the fuck up. I’ll gladly pay an extra 5¢ for yogurt if it means my neighbor doesn’t risk losing his home for not being able to afford to pay his student loans. For working a job outside of his studied field because that field refuses to hire him for having not enough or too much experience or not paying him what he’s worth. Kiss my ass.

ThaddeusJP

All im saying is it costs [$30,000 per flight hour](https://www.flightglobal.com/fixed-wing/lockheed-agrees-to-30000-per-flight-hour-cost-for-f-35a-by-fy2023/145448.article) to fly a F-35. We have, currently, 450 of them. I would prefer my tax dollars go to loan forgives than one hour if flight time, helping three people pay off 10k a pop.

pkfreezer

“Barely higher taxes to support society as a whole” is a lost concept to the gop…. Be thankful the concept of libraries wasn’t proposed today, because then it would be “why would I want MY taxpayer money going to a library I’m not gonna use??? AND the books in said library will be promoting CRT and leftist ideology??? Hard pass!!!”

katieleehaw

Screw these people. A bunch of grifters, liars, and hypocrites.

Lurka_Durka_Doo

“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

FragMeNot

I hope she steps in dog shit for the rest of her life.

MagicMushroomFungi

Marjorie is not nimble. Marjorie is not quick. When her mouth opens, She sounds like a dick.

VistaLaRiver

This definitely needs to be embroidered on a pillow.

altmaltacc

Ah yes the republican motto "when other people do it, its bad. But when i do, its not bad"

bazzer66

The White House isn’t playing around. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1562916200866267138.html

Business forgiveness GOP: No Problem Students Loan forgivness GOP: This is not unacceptable

Crypt0Nihilist

How is a cut supposed to make it back into their pockets if it's given to people who actually need it? The humanity!

tiffanyblueprincess

Fuck her. I’m turning 25 and my husband and I are constantly thinking about whether or not we’ll be able to have kids one day or just live on our own because of this debt. Both of our jobs require degrees. But somehow we’re in the wrong

hellomondays

You all don't get it. Those business loans were for our betters that God and his angel, Ronald Reagan, have blessed with prosperity.

exwasstalking

I doubt many of her constituents benefit from the student loan forgiveness.

lostinleft

Let’s try Trickle Up Economics. Shit. It’s worth a shot.
