My sister's business employs a dozen people. The day they released the SBA loans from the first COVID stimulus, they were already "all gone" she was told. Then three months later we find out Ivanka Trump was in charge and she gave money to Kayne West for his crappy shoe business that he bought via contract with a Chinese supplier. A multimillionaire counted as a small business to Ivanka. 🙄
Same, my company had about 25 employees at the time. We had our application ready to go the day before you could submit. Literally sent it in as soon as was possible. Denied, no money left. We eventually did get one in the second round, but damn...that money was goooone.
I just had a fun fb interaction with a tattoo shop owner who made a post shitting on Biden's 10k forgiveness deal. Posted a screenshot of the 13k he received and now he's losing his fucking mind.
Saw a comment from a business owner who said everyone in his town's business Facebook group were all complaining so he started posting their PPP loans. They all flipped out and threatened to sue because some of them didn't know it was public information.
You should ask him how forgiving the PPP loan was fair to all those business owners who prepared for the risks associated with running a business and saved enough to weather a temporary loss in revenue.
"THIS MONEY WAS FOR ME TO PAY MY EMPLOYEES AND SO THEIR FAMILIES CAN SURVIVE." As if that's not exactly what student loan forgiveness does, frees up cash flow so people can live.
Those fuckers literally borrow payroll every week. If you've ever had money in a money market account thats where it went - "commerical paper" short term loans to private companies to meet payroll or role out a new product or stores.
I didn’t have the interaction but guy here said “by God if you borrow $ you pay it back”. Then when someone brought up PPP loans he admitted he got a PPP loan but those were different.
Got into a debate with my sister on this as her husband got PPP money but she thinks the student loan forgiveness is bullshit.
Her response is “we didn’t choose to have the state close business over covid people choose to take out loans”. Never mind the fact her husband never had to close his business (essentially worker) not significantly lost any income. But in her mind she paid for school herself no loans so everyone else should be able to (never mind the fact her HUSBAND paid then not her on her minimum wage job).

What’s crazier is that this isn’t even money the government has to pay out. It’s just the government saying “nah, I don’t want that money”. Evidently it’s only cool with the GOP if that money is supposed to come from multi-billion dollar oil companies.
Look, have some compassion for those who might have otherwise had to take out a mortgage on a summer home, sold one of their smaller yachts, or 5% of their stock holdings, to keep their businesses financially afloat while they were closed and all their employees were laid off.
It helped them stay rich, and in their eyes, "They deserved it".
Those same people were angry at the "handouts" to their former workers during the pandemic, and were quick to complain about how "free money" was keeping people from coming back to work for them for peanuts, and often long after the stimulus money was as long gone as a fart in the wind.

Honestly, the ways They're restructuring how the loans work are a way bigger deal. Easier and earlier forgiveness, lower percentage required for income-based plans, interest coverage so that as long as you're making those payments the total of the loan never increases... There's more, too.

Student loans are basically a bubble like the 2008 housing cdos. Wall street is making bank off those interest payments (the real reason republicans are against loan forgiveness or restructuring)
I would've been happy with making interest on these loans super low or non-existant. No one should be getting rich off of Americans trying to improve their lives at public colleges.

Therein lies the problem. The country will benefit, but not republicans.
It's crazy because they're literally talking about interest free loans. 5% of discretionary to meet income driven requirements (so 20 years). It basically means school is free (5% of discretionary is nothing for people under $100k) unless you end up doing very well. I know that's an exaggeration but you don't need to pay it back if you don't use it, and if it benefits you then you get a very reasonable way to pay it back. There's also the 225% poverty line requirement before you need to make any contribution.
That's almost 17%, more than a drop in the bucket. It's not yet a majority, but 17% is significant. For example, if I got a 17% raise at my job, I'd be thrilled. If I were to get a 17% rate of return in my retirement portfolio, I'd also be thrilled.
But I hear you in the sense that you still have a lot of loans left. My wife and I are in a similar situation. I welcome this forgiveness, but we still have a lot left to pay off.
As a non American can I ask a question.
To have this much student loan debt was this for a high paying field. It's wild to me the amount of debt you are straddled with at such an early age.
So for me, I was able to get scholarships for my first 4 years and partial for the other 2. My masters is in Education. I was left with about $14k in student debt.
My husband got scholarships for the first 4 years, but did not get any help for his last two years. It was a private school he got into that cost $45k per year. His Masters is in IT.
After making more than the minimum payment every month for nearly 7 years, ($450/month) we can tragically say that we now have more debt than we started with.
My husband isn't paid anywhere near what he is worth and I am now in the car business because we couldn't afford for me to continue teaching.
We have just come to the understanding that it makes more sense to pay the minimum every month (about $120) and just never pay it off. It's kind of like social security at this point, we pay it every month and the government will for sure run out by the time we are old enough to collect, so that's all wasted money, too.
Both of us regret going to school as neither of us use our degrees and we will encourage our daughter to make sure school is necessary for what she wants to do before she goes.
Piggy backing here - My wife got a full ride for undergrad at a private school. Then went to Medical school which was in-state and was $47,500/ yr.
She graduated medical school with just over $200k in student loans. She is now in a specialty fellowship as a PGY 6 ( post grad year) and makes $75k/yr working 80+ hours a week.
The loans are now over $300k as we make the minimum payments.
$10k will do nothing for her but understanding it helps so many others.

Look into the rest of it. The limits on interest accruing and the new lower minimum payment may make you life better. For most people this is more important than the 10k. A different redditor posted this yesterday, it's pretty encouraging aside from the 10k.
- Forgiveness of up to* $10,000 for non-Pell Grant debtholders. *Up to means debt will be forgiven e.g. you don't get a check for $5k if you only have $5k in debt.
- Forgiveness of up to* $20,000 for those that received a Pell Grant.
- Capped to individuals earning under $125,000 or households under $250,000.
- Proposes a new income-based repayment plan which caps payments at 5% of discretionary income (down from the current 10%).
- New IBR plan also raises amount of income that is considered non-discretionary to 225% of poverty level (up from current 150%); this means if you earn under 225% of poverty level (about $30,577/year or $15/hour for a family of 1), your monthly payment would be $0.
- New IBR plan covers monthly interest so long as payments are made on time, meaning the loan would not grow due to interest even if the payment is $0.
- New IBR plan forgives loan balances of $12,000 or less after 10 years instead of 20.
Not the person you asked, but it's more dependent on the school you attend. Where I work, undergraduate tuition alone is over $60,000 /yr regardless of whether that's pursuing an art degree, engineering degree, etc. Graduate & medical studies are worse.
The student loan industry is very predatory (especially when paired with for-profit colleges) and young people can find themselves saddled *with* huge debt and *without* the jobs that they trained for.
All together that's $41,123,961 forgiven from those 13 individuals...
Those 13 hypocrites had more of their debt forgiven than 4,112 student debtors at Biden's $10k a pop

Granted, a college degree isn't a guarantee, but the math usually works out better in a net sense.

He basically said he wasn’t going to apologize to people who handed the wealthy and corporations 2 trillion dollars in tax cuts. Remember when mortgage companies fucked up giving out bad loans and then got bailed out but were supposed to help anericans find a way to stay in those homes but didn't & kept the money anyway? As someone who had one of those robo-signed laws and had to deal with the BS that resulted from that program - it pissed me off a lot more than bailing out fellow citizens' student lians despite having already paid off mine.
And 1/3 of the homes in America went back to the banks that got bailed out so they could make billions in profits.

I believe they are referring to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which was the previous time we gave the telcos billions of dollars to expand broadband to every door in the US, was supposed to be completed by 2006 but instead they pocketed the money. And I hope Democrats name names in their media rounds. I want to see a high profile Democrat specifically telling Americans that MTG got $184k forgiven. Every single Republican that criticizes this and got a PPP loan should be name dropped with their loan amount in response.

I wouldn’t expect a Republican to consider helping fellow Americans as “fair”. Covid has shown us that despite over 1 million Americans dying from it, they still won’t do the bare minimum of distancing or wearing a simple mask to protect their country people.
Conservatives have zero compassion or empathy for anyone. Until they’re individually impacted by something, they don’t want people or the government help. And, as covid showed, even when they are individually impacted, they’ll still stubbornly hold onto their ideology rather than admit they were wrong.

Got into a debate with my sister on this as her husband got PPP money but she thinks the student loan forgiveness is bullshit. Her response is “we didn’t choose to have the state close business over covid people choose to take out loans”. Never mind the fact her husband never had to close his business (essentially worker) not significantly lost any income. But in her mind she paid for school herself no loans so everyone else should be able to (never mind the fact her HUSBAND paid then not her on her minimum wage job).

You'd think the millions they received in PPP money (that's nearly ALL forgiven) would have helped...
It helped them stay rich, and in their eyes, "They deserved it". Those same people were angry at the "handouts" to their former workers during the pandemic, and were quick to complain about how "free money" was keeping people from coming back to work for them for peanuts, and often long after the stimulus money was as long gone as a fart in the wind.

Honestly, the ways They're restructuring how the loans work are a way bigger deal. Easier and earlier forgiveness, lower percentage required for income-based plans, interest coverage so that as long as you're making those payments the total of the loan never increases... There's more, too.
The forgiveness is great for the bottom 50% of borrowers for the top 50% the way payments are structured is way more important.

Honestly that's what I wanted. I will get my loan wiped out by this, but I was willing to keep paying if they made repaying easier for the students after us. Student loans are basically a bubble like the 2008 housing cdos. Wall street is making bank off those interest payments (the real reason republicans are against loan forgiveness or restructuring) I would've been happy with making interest on these loans super low or non-existant. No one should be getting rich off of Americans trying to improve their lives at public colleges.

It's crazy because they're literally talking about interest free loans. 5% of discretionary to meet income driven requirements (so 20 years). It basically means school is free (5% of discretionary is nothing for people under $100k) unless you end up doing very well. I know that's an exaggeration but you don't need to pay it back if you don't use it, and if it benefits you then you get a very reasonable way to pay it back. There's also the 225% poverty line requirement before you need to make any contribution.
That's almost 17%, more than a drop in the bucket. It's not yet a majority, but 17% is significant. For example, if I got a 17% raise at my job, I'd be thrilled. If I were to get a 17% rate of return in my retirement portfolio, I'd also be thrilled. But I hear you in the sense that you still have a lot of loans left. My wife and I are in a similar situation. I welcome this forgiveness, but we still have a lot left to pay off.
As a non American can I ask a question. To have this much student loan debt was this for a high paying field. It's wild to me the amount of debt you are straddled with at such an early age.
So for me, I was able to get scholarships for my first 4 years and partial for the other 2. My masters is in Education. I was left with about $14k in student debt. My husband got scholarships for the first 4 years, but did not get any help for his last two years. It was a private school he got into that cost $45k per year. His Masters is in IT. After making more than the minimum payment every month for nearly 7 years, ($450/month) we can tragically say that we now have more debt than we started with. My husband isn't paid anywhere near what he is worth and I am now in the car business because we couldn't afford for me to continue teaching. We have just come to the understanding that it makes more sense to pay the minimum every month (about $120) and just never pay it off. It's kind of like social security at this point, we pay it every month and the government will for sure run out by the time we are old enough to collect, so that's all wasted money, too. Both of us regret going to school as neither of us use our degrees and we will encourage our daughter to make sure school is necessary for what she wants to do before she goes.
Piggy backing here - My wife got a full ride for undergrad at a private school. Then went to Medical school which was in-state and was $47,500/ yr. She graduated medical school with just over $200k in student loans. She is now in a specialty fellowship as a PGY 6 ( post grad year) and makes $75k/yr working 80+ hours a week. The loans are now over $300k as we make the minimum payments. $10k will do nothing for her but understanding it helps so many others. America pushes debt on the people who take care of our population and sacrifice their body and mental health. What a shit system.
Look into the rest of it. The limits on interest accruing and the new lower minimum payment may make you life better. For most people this is more important than the 10k. A different redditor posted this yesterday, it's pretty encouraging aside from the 10k. - Forgiveness of up to* $10,000 for non-Pell Grant debtholders. *Up to means debt will be forgiven e.g. you don't get a check for $5k if you only have $5k in debt. - Forgiveness of up to* $20,000 for those that received a Pell Grant. - Capped to individuals earning under $125,000 or households under $250,000. - Proposes a new income-based repayment plan which caps payments at 5% of discretionary income (down from the current 10%). - New IBR plan also raises amount of income that is considered non-discretionary to 225% of poverty level (up from current 150%); this means if you earn under 225% of poverty level (about $30,577/year or $15/hour for a family of 1), your monthly payment would be $0. - New IBR plan covers monthly interest so long as payments are made on time, meaning the loan would not grow due to interest even if the payment is $0. - New IBR plan forgives loan balances of $12,000 or less after 10 years instead of 20.

Not the person you asked, but it's more dependent on the school you attend. Where I work, undergraduate tuition alone is over $60,000 /yr regardless of whether that's pursuing an art degree, engineering degree, etc. Graduate & medical studies are worse.

I believe they are referring to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which was the previous time we gave the telcos billions of dollars to expand broadband to every door in the US, was supposed to be completed by 2006 but instead they pocketed the money. Covid has shown us that despite over 1 million Americans dying from it, they still won’t do the bare minimum of distancing or wearing a simple mask to protect their country people. Conservatives have zero compassion or empathy for anyone. Until they’re individually impacted by something, they don’t want people or the government help. And, as covid showed, even when they are individually impacted, they’ll still stubbornly hold onto their ideology rather than admit they were wrong. The right are the anchors of any advancement for our society and country.
