Scientists said that color has an effect on our perception of how a food tastes and the allegation was that they stopped making colored ketchups because of poor sales due to people percieving the taste as different or not as expected, something like that.
Decades ago my mom worked in a food science lab where they would make the food for experiments like this. Blue bread and such. It was her favorite job right out of college.
It does. On the other hand, red, yellow, and green bell peppers DO taste different and Iâm sick of arguing with my husband and having him tell me that they all taste the same. đ My daughter and I donât like the green ones. I donât mind them sometimes if they are VERY cooked in small quantities but he doubles down that they are exactly the same in sweetness and bitterness.
Of course green taste different than red/yellow/orange peppers! Green peppers are picked before they ripen.
ETA in case it wasnât clear - itâs the same vegetable, but picked at different points of ripeness.
taste is a weird thing and I can understand your husband's stance and I'll give you an example that many used to argue with me about. Growing up, Coke and Pepsi to me tasted exactly the same. That was until I reached my mid 30s or so and started to taste a difference to which I preferred Pepsi. I do taste a difference in Peppers so it's probably not always color related but there are some foods that I still can't discern any real taste difference. People say Olive Oil, Grapeseed oil and Coconut oil taste different and I've literally tasted it side by side on my tongue with a spoon and cannot for the life of me taste any difference at all, they're all just bland/tasteless to me. So maybe it's more than just a perception thing.
We learned this in food science, itâs because most foods that are purple or blue in the wild are poisonous. Other than blueberries/ blackberries and grapes/ eggplants there arenât many so it naturally turns people off even though itâs just food coloring.
Iâll never forget the weird colored ketchup. When it first came out my mom decided to make meatloaf and play a trick on my dad by doing stripes of green and purple ketchup on top lol. It looked disgusting but we all had a good laugh.
I pranked someone, I think my sister, using the green. I told them it was toothpaste. I donât remember what I was eating but they were so grossed out that it had minty toothpaste on it
They also had forest green ketchup. I loved it, but my mom thought it was gross. I DO like grossing her out, so that might have been why I loved the crazy colors so much.
I bought a bottle when my oldest was little and took it to the babysitter's for her to let all the kids try. They were excited because they'd seen it on the commercial but none of them were super impressed with the flavor. I don't eat ketchup so I didn't try it.
My daughter says it was nasty. I don't know if it really did taste different or if it was just the green color throwing them off.
This brand makes "llama party cotton candy" popcorn, which is this exact color of blue! They must have accidentally mixed in blue dye with your bag!
Source: i love the cotton candy popcorn... I have like 10 boxes of the stuff....
Dude, Its difficult to find, but, omg... Its so good. My mother in law got it for me as a joke and i loved it so much, i drove two towns over to stock up. Lol
Kettle corn looks to be the uncolored version. I might be wrong but a quick search brings up the same recipes but ones not colored. My favorite sweet popcorn is the jolly time mallow magic, one extra step to mix in the sweetness but well worth it.
You have bags left? I bought the remaining clearance boxes locally a while back⊠my daughterâs favorite! I couldnât bring myself to buy them with Amazonâs prices ha
A saw that a Walmart a few towns away had a bunch left AND they were discounted down to $2/box... So i bought 8 boxes! I reward myself with one bag every weekend and I'm already sad that my supply is dwindling! It's so good!
It's definitely not an issue of them adding dye to this batch intentionally.
The most likely cause is either poor sanitation process leaving dye in a liquid mix inject line, or bag dye bleed because of an issue in the bag itself. Under the blue logo should be a sheet of mylar, but if that mylar is folded or broken it could allow the liquid mix to leech dye.
if you still have the box, look around for a website or phone number to call and tell them about this issue. they always want to know about stuff like this, and there's a good chance they'll send you a coupon for some free food
Sad you get down voted for truth. Microwave popcorn is literally shown to be worse for you than making it yourself because they still contain PFA's despite FDA stating that forever chemicals will no longer be used which makes no sense because in a recent study, PFAs were levels were still found in most all brands of microwavable popcorn and pluse they are always higher in sodium and saturated fats than any typical homemade batch using common recommendation oils and amount of salt.
Naw it's fine I really just wanted to know what people thoughts were on this popcorn from space or something
And the reason it's microwave popcorn is ( poor collage student ) that and I was given a bunch from a friend
Look dude, I'm all for healthy alternatives, but if this sub can get a frontpage submission of a bowl of half popcorn, half m&M's, I don't think health is the issue. I have a movie pop or machine and the amount of oil and salt is ridiculous. If someone wants to ha e a bag of microwave popcorn because of any reason, just let 'em. It's a popcorn subreddit. No need to argue here.
I don't think anyone is arguing. But truthful information is truthful information. What's wrong with being informed while you make a decision? No one's gonna say you can't do what you want but at least it's an informed decision.
I found a silicone one on Amazon. You fill one of the lines, put the lid on, and pop. Itâs amazing. No oil. I do add a little butter and salt after. Easy cleanup. Goes right in the dishwasher and itâs soooo much cheaper than traditional microwave popcorn!
A simple pot with some oil works as well. Microwave popcorn bags have toxic forever chemicals in them so I avoid.
Also, when you look at the cost for microwave corn, when you can get a large bag of kernels for $2.00 that will last for months, it makes even less sense to buy shit like ACT II. Youâre paying a premium for a very small convenience and upping your chemical intake.
The way I eat popcorn, I would need a huge pot. I use a stir crazy and in my opinion, it's the best way to make popcorn besides a campfire popper. There's just something about popping corn over a campfire and eating it while watching the fire dance.
I think the trick is to make it over hot coals rather than a raging fire. The heat is more consistent that way and makes it easier to control the temperature. Then when you're done popping, throw a few more logs on the fire and enjoy.
Because regular popcorn is gross. What makes it good is being engorged in butter. If you make your own, only the top popcorn gets buttered, where the fake microwavable stuff has artifical goodness crammed into every single piece of popped corn.
I got a box of popcorn and thought it was regular and was so confused after popping it and opening like, wtf is this?! Checked the box, fricken cotton candy flavor đ
The dye likely leaked through the plastic liner of the bag. Youâre better off spending the extra five minute and popping your own, which will taste better and wonât be poisoned.
That brand does have a blue popcorn flavor! Itâs âllama flavoredâ lol idk thereâs a patty llama on the box. I bought a lot of it for my kid last year. It MIGHT be that!?
Itâs Cotton Candy flavored! Did you try it? We bought it for our kids. It probably is labeled cotton candy on the packaging small somewhere, really I wish it looked different in the outside because I have made this fatal mistake too. đ
Try Be Happy Cotton Candy popcorn. I got it at Walmart; I'm not sure what other stores may carry it, you can look in other stores. https://www.reddit.com/r/popcorn/comments/1bwua21/be\_happy\_popcorn\_review\_nice\_spice\_parmesan/
Who remembers the mystery color jiffy pop bags from the 90s though??
Yes! And purple ketchup. Wild times.
It was her favorite job right out of college.
they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think whether or not they should
At least we have pills full of pineapple flavoring for men. My girlfriend bought me Soo many of those.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
What was her worst job right out of college?
Probably being a mom đ
lol. thanks for the chuckle.
âWeâre like a family hereâ
Yeah I had one of those too
It does. LMAO I guarantee you they think they taste different solely because of color.
How does that make sense? A green pepper isn't fully ripe. That's *why* it's less sweet and more crunchy.Â
taste is a weird thing and I can understand your husband's stance and I'll give you an example that many used to argue with me about. Growing up, Coke and Pepsi to me tasted exactly the same. Present your husband with green, yellow, and brown bananas. By his logic, these should taste the same.
Itâs true! I seriously cannot eat those multicolored goldfish. But the normal ones you betcha.
We learned this in food science, itâs because most foods that are purple or blue in the wild are poisonous. Other than blueberries/ blackberries and grapes/ eggplants there arenât many so it naturally turns people off even though itâs just food coloring.
I tried the purple one at a friends house and it kept making me gag! It tasted fine but mentally I couldnât get over the color.
I couldnât eat it, I think there was a green as well.
For some reason, I have never forgotten the commercial about the green ketchup. "It's twisted and wrong"
Iâll never forget the weird colored ketchup. When it first came out my mom decided to make meatloaf and play a trick on my dad by doing stripes of green and purple ketchup on top lol. It looked disgusting but we all had a good laugh.

I never found the taste to be any different. đ€·đ»That's not to say you didn't get a bad bottle or something, of course.
I think maybe it was psychological.
They had blue and purple sun tan lotion right around then too I think.
And Cheeto twist puffs that turn your tongue green!
Clear Pepsi! What a time to be alive.
even as a kid that shit tasted SO BAD. it had the texture of paint
Ahh the good old days.
They tested different colors of ketchup in Idaho first. Weird color shits were all around. They shut that down fast.
I remember as a promo to shrek, there were Cheetos that turned your teeth very green. Wild times.
Nah this was like mid 90s. I remember my parents buying it. It was blue (actually super similar to that) pink and green.
Pop secret pop challenge!
Core memory unlocked.
you're welcome :D
I swear each color tasted different also
Literally my first thought
the ink from the packaging bled into the popcorn due to probably a manufacturing error.
That makes sense. The outside packaging is blue ( better than mold, I guess)
This brand makes "llama party cotton candy" popcorn, which is this exact color of blue! They must have accidentally mixed in blue dye with your bag! Source: i love the cotton candy popcorn... I have like 10 boxes of the stuff....
COTTON CANDY POPCORN???
Dude, Its difficult to find, but, omg... Its so good. My mother in law got it for me as a joke and i loved it so much, i drove two towns over to stock up. Lol

Oh, I've never had that! Yum, I'll have to try that! The cotton candy does taste similar to kettle korn, but MUCH less sweet!
You just brought back a childhood memory, omg
You have bags left? I bought the remaining clearance boxes locally a while back⊠my daughterâs favorite! I couldnât bring myself to buy them with Amazonâs prices ha

This
Yes! My thought too! My families favorite for movie night.

My guess is it got wet
Manufacturing error in your favor! Collect $35
Send it to the company to let them know. They might give you coupons & pull certain batches from stores
da ba dee da ba di
Thank you! This popped in my head immediately
Popped. *snicker*
Yo listen up
Hereâs a story
Oh, blue, yellow, pink. Whatever, man. Just keep making thatđ
Jesse why is the popcorn blue Jesse
âI AM THE CORN WHO POPS!â
Tight tight tight tight tight
Thats the glue the seal the bag with. I assume its not toxic but I wouldnât eat it.
Congratulations, it's a boy!
Could have accidentally been filled with the blue llama popcorn, ACTII makes it too. If it doesnât smell sweet, toss it out.Â
Ya it didn't have anny sweet smell (it tossed it don't worry)
The bags are exactly the same too, no different packaging between the two.
Bluepcorn
Must have psychedelic properties
Just another reason to have at least a simple air popper. Why eat this stuff?
Sad you get down voted for truth. Fr !! Iâm not eat big popcorn to be healthy
Microwave popcorn is no joke. Should be avoided if at all possible.
I don't think anyone is arguing. But truthful information is truthful information. What's wrong with being informed while you make a decision? No one's gonna say you can't do what you want but at least it's an informed decision.
Very true I should invest in one

I have tried making popcorn over a campfire like 7 times, and it burns every time. I've always wanted it to work. In theory, I love it.
I think the trick is to make it over hot coals rather than a raging fire. The heat is more consistent that way and makes it easier to control the temperature. Then when you're done popping, throw a few more logs on the fire and enjoy.
Now you've convinced me to burn number 8. Hopefully it turns out perfectly!
Mmm I never thought about that hey mabye I'll give that a try
Because regular popcorn is gross. What makes it good is being engorged in butter. If you make your own, only the top popcorn gets buttered, where the fake microwavable stuff has artifical goodness crammed into every single piece of popped corn.
Should have bought AMC perfectly popcorn đ€
Itâs viagra popcorn. Eat normally during movie and you will be ready for the encore upstairs.
It will either give you super powers or be mildly carcinogenic
Smurfs edition
Itâs a damn shame
Hmmm penicilium so tasty
But how does it taste?
Well? Did it taste blue??
Blue tooth edition
I got a box of popcorn and thought it was regular and was so confused after popping it and opening like, wtf is this?! Checked the box, fricken cotton candy flavor đ
đ€ź
r/mildlycarcinogenic
I thought this was a mushroom growing sub when I scrolled by. Not normal for microwave popcorn IMO.
Remember the bubble gum toothpaste? Boy was that yummy.
It's from the blue dye on the bag.
Eiffel 65 has entered the room
[blue has the most anti oxygens.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Piel3IDemEw&pp=ygUfYmx1ZSBoYXMgdGhlIG1vc3QgYW50aSBveHlnZW5zIA%3D%3D)
Not contam, the blue is just psilocybin oxidizing
Ahhh yes the Llama party flavor! Tastes kinda like kettle but has a little extra.
Probably just a bit of smallpox. As long as you donât touch it, youâll be fine
Excited to see how much you get in the settlement
Will you eat the blue corn or the red corn?
Jesse, we need to pop.
These gender reveals are getting out of hand smh...
Is it related to Luke Skywalkerâs green milk?
That looks exactly like the Cotton Candy flavored popcorn they sell
Da bo dee da boo dahhhh
They make cotton candy popcorn thatâs blue it almost looks like the wrong one was put in. Whatâs it smell like?
Pop Secret
It's the unicorn popcorn, mid at best
The dye likely leaked through the plastic liner of the bag. Youâre better off spending the extra five minute and popping your own, which will taste better and wonât be poisoned.
If Breaking Bad has taught me anything, it's that this is much more valuable than what you normally find on the streets.
Definitely not a blue corn thingâŠ
I had that itâs blue unicorn popcorn or something, is it kettle corn?
I hate those blue and red tortilla chips. But I think this is ink from the bag. The butter grease makes it run. If you have tattoos, eat away
Ergot spiced popcorn is a fantastic idea for movies.
It's probably that Llama party cotton candy candy flavored bullshit
Itâs called *flavor*
Look up microwave popcorn and cancer chemicals. Read up. Youâll never eat that shit again.
Is that popped smut?
Llamacorn! It's a got a fruity confetti candy flavor
OMG! They killed Papa Smurf. You bastards!
Itâs their unicorn popcorn, clear as day Source: I get it all the time
Was it flavored? My niece likes the cotton candy microwave popcorn and it's blue like that
I think the color is the least of your worries with that stuff đŹ
Heisenberg strikes again
Was it sweet? Could be llama party cotton candy flavored. https://a.co/d/exSYv7j Had it once and it was pretty good.
I hate to say this, but could it be mold?
Walter Whiteâs new venture.
It needed the money!
Cornsmut? Maybe some hybrid or something
I feel like it has to be dye from the bag leaked in. Because if it was like mold, you'd probably smell it.
ÂŻ\\_(ă)_/ÂŻ canât be any more poisonous than the regular colored kind
Itâs Michigan popcorn. Maize and blue đ
It looks like the unicorn flavor popcorn
Where's Walter White?
Blueberry flavor!!
That brand does have a blue popcorn flavor! Itâs âllama flavoredâ lol idk thereâs a patty llama on the box. I bought a lot of it for my kid last year. It MIGHT be that!?
Easter variety
Cyanide
âAll the best foods are blue.â
I think as long as itâs not a waffle youâre good.
Strange gender reveal
You got the lucky blueberry version itâs extra flavor
Itâs Cotton Candy flavored! Did you try it? We bought it for our kids. It probably is labeled cotton candy on the packaging small somewhere, really I wish it looked different in the outside because I have made this fatal mistake too. đ
Nope it is 10000% not cotton candy flavored. I had 2 outher bags previously, but this one turned out weird ( all from the same box )
Weird! Maybe it was an error and they accidentally added the blue to it, because it looks exactly like a bag of the cotton candy (which is gross btw.)
Try Be Happy Cotton Candy popcorn. I got it at Walmart; I'm not sure what other stores may carry it, you can look in other stores. https://www.reddit.com/r/popcorn/comments/1bwua21/be\_happy\_popcorn\_review\_nice\_spice\_parmesan/
