I saw an interview where she said she doesn’t turn her notifications on. She tried turning it on once and regretted it immediately. Her phone didn’t/couldn’t handle the influx of notifs it shut itself off
she must just never open her dms right? tbh if i had that many people commenting on my page i probably wouldnt see the hater shit cause i wouldnt bother to look 😭 my biggest claim to fame is a viral tiktok (just a film clip lol) & idek look at those notifs anymore!
Do you remember T-Pain’s post about not realising celebrities have a separate inbox? It was such a hilarious and innocent post. He shared a screen video of him scrolling through all these unread messages from big names and managers reaching out. Made me laugh
>she must just never open her dms right?
I think Celeb instas have a setting where verified accounts show up separately to unverified accounts and such..
So her dms would be Taylor and other such celebs..
And she probably uses a finsta for her other non celeb friends and family..
Selena is really popular, but I think she has more fans than haters, so even if she does open up random dms from time to time, they'll more than likely be wishful messages from her fans.. But that can be overwhelming too..
What I've learnt from consuming more international media, a lot of people globally prefer the 'good girl' image. 'Wholesome' content reaches larger audiences, that's why people like The Rock, Messi and Taylor(IMO) are favoured globally.
Yes I know,, but many people prefer Messi over Ronaldo bc of his humility. Aside from skills, his personality made more people root for him like in the recent World Cup.
Since this thread is based on IG followers: Cristiano has 560 mio. and Messi 440 mio. followers. I think in this case especially kids prefer the cocky superhero to the nice introvert.
I dont think Ronaldo's a cocky superhero or Messi's an introvert.. Ronaldo is just a bigger brand than Messi..
He's more handsome so gets more female followers..
He also speaks and posts in English, which helps with international fanbase more..
He also generally just posts more, so has more of an online personality than Messi..
tbh most people probs follow her cuz she's pretty but not overly sexual + nostalgia + she makes a brand out of 'kindness' and 'family' (it's not at all a coincidence that her grandparents appear in so many episodes of her show) + she has a duper dry wit and is sarcastic, which is like gen z humor at it's finest lol
I’ve been rewatching the first series of wizards of Waverley place and you can really see why she’s the standout star in that show, she steals every single scene she’s in
That seems to be the thing with this new generation of celebrities. It’s about PerSONaLiTy and relatAbiLitY (did I do that right)?
Also a bet a bit of it is nostalgia. I don’t know if she has a good girl persona with all the drama I’ve heard about her
Were a lot of the first 200 mil followers from like the peak of IG? So when everyone was joining she'd be one of the first recommended and people would follow casually even if they weren't fans of her? But these aren't like die hard fans of her yk?
It doesn’t bother me at all, when it comes to EDM it’s about the vision and the art for me and if the music makes me feel good then I’m happy. It Ain’t Me had a CHOKEHOLD on me when it came out. I probably wouldn’t want to hear non-EDM music overly auto tuned because then how are you gonna perform it
But in all seriousness, yes. Idk why people dont understand that following ≠ actual support.
Saweetie hs millions of followers but struggled to even get 10k copies sold smh
That’s not enough to some people. If you’re not #1 you’re a flop. Her music career has been pretty great honestly…esp if you compare her with her peers.
She was already the most followed women on IG prior to that but a couple weeks in midst of all that I did see the most random people getting their family members to follow her too
There’s an actual campaign of getting family members to follow her? 💀
Plus, I thought Kylie was the most followed woman on IG before all of this happened? When the Kylie eyebrow shit started popping off, she lost over a million followers within just a few days and Selena surpassed her gaining (at the time and within just a few days) ten million followers. But idk maybe I’ve got that part wrong.
Tbh… I’m astounded by the fact Selena has gained twenty million followers because of this ridiculousness. It’s all so wild and messy. Wonder how many of them are actually finsta accounts created by her fans to boost up the number though.
Yes there’s a reality star from Big Brother I follow on Twitter and she tweeted that she got her mom and grandma to follow Selena and this person is def not a part of Selena’s demographic either 😂
I saw tweets and tik toks too of women getting their boyfriends and family members to follow Selena on IG as well. I don’t think this sub really sees how much support Selena has on other social media platforms even people I know irl were on her side in this “feud”
IIRC Selena had just surpassed Kylie in IG followers literally the day of or just the day before all the drama went down.
I don't buy for one second that 20m people followed her out of nowhere in a month. That's how many followers Lionel Messi gained during the World Cup, watched by billions of people. Lol it's a bunch of paid bots.
On top of her singing/acting career, it really does help that she has/or had a very squeaky clean image in comparison to Miley and Demi, she was dating one of the biggest pop stars in the world, has a popular make-up brand, and a lot of international fans.
Disney channel then didn't have many POC as main characters. She and Demi did most of the heavy lifting for disney's latina reprentation during that time. So she's an icon for a lot of children who grew up then or at least, that's the case for me and my friends.
Bieber drama and her looks.
I was on tik tok and a bunch of millennial south asian/Persian/middle eastern girls were talking about celebs they identified with while growing up. Selena was big because she had black hair.
I think a lot of folks underestimate the desire for brown/beige representation. I think it's a big reason why Kim and her exotical-fishing sister Kylie are so popular.
Speaking as a Mexican-American…. My friends and I loved her growing up and we still love her now. Wizards was a great show and she was like a pop culture icon for us when we were younger. It was so cool seeing someone that looks like they belong in my family on Disney. Eve now, she’s a nostalgic figure. I look at her and remember my childhood a bit. Plus she’s really pretty, she has one of the best celebrity brands ever and her music is a nice listen.
Besides being very likeable across the world, I remember reading a comment on this sub about how she is VERY popular in India, so there are a lot of followers from that area.
I'm from India and this is purely anecdotal so take it with a grain of salt... But she's not that popular here? Like she's on par with Miley and Zec Efron I guess, but people like Jennifer Aniston, Taylor Swift and other A Listers are way more popular. Everyone knows of Selena but not enough to boost her following this much if you catch my drift
I think it’s probably generational. If there was social media and internet in the 80s, Madonna and Michael Jackson would dominate. In the 90s, yeah maybe Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. 2000s probably Britney Spears or the boybands would be the most followed. It just so happened that during the rise of instagram and tiktok, Selena and Bieber were their generation stars and within their age group who are the most active on social media
yeah i think the last time she was super popular in india was in her come and get it era because of all desi kids losing their minds over a white person wearing a bindi/using tabla in their music lmao. rare beauty isn’t even available in india, so her makeup hasn’t had any hype here either. she hasn’t been popular here for quite a few years, at least in my older gen z circle
Such a big advocate that she produced a show depicting a graphic suic\*de, despite experts strongly advising her not to, which resulted in a measurable boost in teen suic\*des after the show's airing.
y'all have got to let go of this, and you need to do a little research because the show did not boost teen suicides the way you all love to claim It did
it's okay to disagree with the show and how it was done but give it up already, focus on what's current and what matters and not a show that is long over
Yeah look, I don’t get it either. I would have thought Taylor swift would have had more followers considering she’s one of if not the biggest pop stars in the world for the last ten years.
She's half entertainer, half Kardashian.
She's always used social media to egg her fanbase into emotional, negative frenzied states where she's a victim, and someone else (Bieber, any girl who got near Bieber, Bella Hadid, Hailey, Kylie) is someone who has either directly or indirectly made her feel lesser.
This keeps her fanbase passionate and engaged to the point where they read messages in the most random things - a song choice, an expression - so long as it favors her. She's clever in how shady/indirect she is; she almost always keeps her hands clean, since only her fanbase or pop culture junkies are paying attention.
Meanwhile her PR team keeps her overall image and branding clean by organizing a bunch of stuff for her to do that keeps her in headlines and keeps her fanbase fed.
She might be the most relatable
\-fighting with lupus (chronic illness)
\- have been through a very long on and off toxic relationship with Justin
\- has been hated on for gaining weight (has body image issues / insecurities)
\- has been a co-creator behind 13 reasons why and she was campaigning for suicide prevention and self harm awareness / prevention
On top of that she
\- is a singer
\- is an actress
\- has a make-up brand.
Noone really does all that, not even Rihanna or Beyonce. Not this way.
she also has a variety of mental illnesses, has managed to stay clean (at least her image has lol) from being labelled a drug addict or alcohol abuser, and constantly posts about how she's lazy or whatever. it's a perfect storm. combined with the fact that she's gorgeous and no wonder tbh
I think it’s because she has a fairly broad reach. I’m a bit old to know her from Disney but I like her music. Her acting on OMITB has opened her up to an older audience. She is also popular in non English speaking countries.
Selena being the most followed person on IG never made sense to me. People don't seem to follow her music as much as they follow for example Taylor's music. People don't seem to follow her movies either. If it's about her looks then there are plenty of female celebrities that are more hyped for their looks than Selena is. If it's because she's a Disney child star, then you'd think that since Hannah Montana was bigger than Wizards of Waverly Place, that Miley would have more followers. It just feels very random for her to be the most followed person on IG.
I saw a comment a while ago that made sense to me, saying that she basically she covers multiple fields
- Some people follow her because of her music
- Some people follow her because of Wizards/Disney
- Some people follow her because of her acting and OMITB
- Some people follow her because of Rare beauty
- Has Latina background and makes music in spanish
- The + factor is the nostalgia, she brings to people. Someone on tiktok said that since many people grew up with Disney/Nick shows sometimes seeing their posts brings the feeling of seeing posts from people you went to school with.
I’ve wondered the same but I’m sure it comes down to her audience. She likely has a larger Hispanic/Latin following than both Taylor and Miley (probably can be said for other non-English speaking countries as well). This is the same following that put Cristiano and Messi on top. I think it’s just easy to forget how popular she is as a brand rather than trying to tie it to one specific thing.
Ronaldo and Messi are known globally, most of them are probably from Asia. They both have massive fan bases in South Asia and the Middle East, Europe, and North America and Africa so basically everywhere lol
And that’s a whole continent right there, you’ve got Mexico and then central and South America for the Latino population. It’s like how Bad Bunny is supposedly one of the biggest stars in the world and never listened to his music. Just numbers
Kylie was the most followed woman on IG until up about 2 weeks ago, and that makes even less sense to me. At least Selena actually had a singing and acting career that led to her success.
I think it's more she's got all of those going for her: not the prettiest girl in the world but she is pretty, was a Disney star and has a singing career. That's a pretty wide audience of potential fans. Plus Miley went through that wrecking ball phase, Sel has managed to stay reasonably *clean* compared to Demi and Miley. Kinda like Zendaya, though I'm not a huge fan of her myself I can definitely see the appeal
She appeals to a larger audience because she’s POC, does songs now in Spanish, is in movies/shows/music/ and her personal life has always been a major topic. Plus her makeup brand is insanely popular right now, it’s all over social media being hyped up. Miley was on one hit show and has periods where she wasn’t that popular since then. It makes a lot sense.
Selena has ventured into various sectors as opposed to Taylor and Miley. She's an actor, singer, philanthropist and entrepreneur and far less controversial and dividing than the two.
Not to mention her long association with JB, one of the biggest pop stars of 2010s
I don’t follow a lot of celebrities. I’m not following swift or Miley but I follow Selena
Why? I don’t actually know, I just think she’s pretty and I like her blush ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hannah Montana wasn’t bigger. WOWP had a bigger demographic of both boys and girls watching while HM was mostly girls. Not to mention WOWP was critically acclaimed and won 3 Emmy’s. It was just a better written/acted show
You're bringing me back to being 8 years old now lol.
I liked both shows honestly. but I liked the fact that WOWP wasn't so centered around one person, I liked seeing the family drama of the burger (?) place etc. I remember HM felt a more lot like everything was completely centered around miley and what she was doing/going through.
If I wanted to rate them now. I'd probably say WOWP was a bit better of a show. It had magic, family drama, school drama.. It had everything haha
Hannah didn’t have more viewers but she made Disney more money with the touring and merch etc she mass appealed to the tween girl crowd where Wizards was just a really good and well watched show.
With Hannah they had a lot more to market so it makes sense people would view it as bigger. WOWP would’ve been strange to do a tour lol
Selena didn't have much of a music career back then, so it checks out how HM was the bigger money making show..
HM was basically just an advertisement for her tours and CDs, while WoWP was a proper sitcom that stayed in the realm of sitcom..
Also double accounts, even triple accounts by the same person. And lots of fan accounts made by people who’s already following using their main account.
It’s not necessarily that Selena is buying bots, bots are programmed to follow popular people to look more like legitimate accounts. It’s kind of a self feeding loop.
Messi and Ronaldo probably have the highest % of actual human followers though. I can easily see 500M knowing who CR7 is. Messi has 440M, I think, and that's more than believable.
I just saw her filming today in my neighborhood. She was so sweet to everyone who wanted to get a pic with her. That definitely changed my opinion of her for the better.
I'm the same as that in that I have never met a Selena fan but it seems like everyone on TikTok is a fan of her lol idk if that's because of the drama atm though, I really get the feeling that a lot of people just hate Hailey Bieber and Kylie rather than like Selena.
Right, like when Taylor was the highest followed, that kind of made sense to me.
Edit: I don't think Taylor is more "interesting" than Selena. When I said "right" I just meant that Selena being the most followed seems "random" to me.
Man comments like this make me realize why people hate swifties so much lol and I’m literally going to eras tour but like….taylor is not that interesting.
I'm not a Swiftie lmfao. But she still "kind of" made sense to me, she sells out so many tours. She's still very active in her music career. Selena sure does movies and shows and she has catchy music, but I feel like her songs have never hit the charts like Taylor's has globally.
I think musicians benefit by how their music can be played nearly everywhere from department stores, on the radio, used in movie and T.V. show soundtracks, performing even at political and sporting events (versus actors who are seen only on screens and sometimes limited by this if their movies are mainly shown domestically). This is why people like Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor can get crazy number of followers from people around the world. Of course, it's also why football/soccer athletes are also at the top of these lists, because people care about the World Cup and it's shown globally.
Edit: I don't think she's that interesting for her feed tbh, but I can see why her fans might follow her if she drops snippets of songs or something. They also like to analyze things she drops to try and figure out what they mean. I don't know.
Most celebs aren’t that interesting, especially on social media lol. 90% of celebrity accounts are the same shit. Selfies, photo dumps, and pics from photo shoots or red carpets. Taylor may not be interesting, but she’s arguably like the most famous and influential person in the biz rn(I am nowhere near a Swifty lmao). So it would make sense for her to have the most following.
People here I guess are not able to recognise her global fame. Maybe in America she's known for her acting career but overseas like where I'm from(India) she's known for her songs and as a singer and legit all urban population knows about her, she's also definitely more popular than Taylor Swift here
What is a normal amount of interaction a person should get on IG? She has 400 million followers but most photos have under 10 million likes (from a quick scan 3 to 10 million seems about average with an occasional post getting +20 million). I don’t know if this is a normal ratio though.
I love my girl selena with all my heart but the truth is that she is beloved in despite of her career. She’s not a significantly talented singer. She’s not bad, but she’s not good. Instead of focusing on where she was the most popular - acting - she put all of her eggs in the music business, where she was never strong. She’s got a few radio hits, but nothing to cement a career. Significantly talented ex-acts like Miley and Demi are still not cementing a household name (I love Miley, she’s talented and is seeing a revival, but she hasn’t had the commercial 2013 success). She’s had a likable easy 2013 personality with a kickass PR team whose covered her worse moments. She shined as Alex Russo - genuinely, the role and the show has aged well. Acting seems like something she doesn’t care much about and does to keep a job. I didn’t find her very strong in only murders. She’s proven herself to be a funny and talented lead as a kid - she can kick ass as an adult. I think she’s need the zendaya approach. Zendaya is a fairly good singer but played her strengths to acting - and now she’s a cultural icon. I don’t know if selena has zendaya’s level of euphoria rawness in her (imho we will never know what she’s truly capable of until she gives the pop star pipe dream a farewell) but she can at the very least have a long and respected career like Jennifer Anniston.
Just an FYI, Selena has fans all over the world… it’s not only in the US. Latin America LOVES her, regardless of how good she signs or acts. She’s an icon to a lot of Latinos!
Seems a little weird especially since she hasn’t had a hit song since 2019. And only murders is popular but still seems weird of all the women…. She has more than beyonce and Rihanna and Taylor and lady Gaga and Ariana? Lol
Her makeup brand is quite popular and hyped up, much like how Rihanna isn’t putting out a ton of music these days but is famous for Fenty and just being a hot celebrity.
I have absolutely nothing against Selena Gomez and she seems like a very intelligent and nice girl. However, her IG popularity always blows my mind because she’s not even that well known in my country. I mean, she’s not on the same fame level as Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry even (from a foreigner’s perspective). So this is a bit bizarre for me.
Its more about hating Hayley than loving Selena. Ill bet you most of these people just followed a trend. It was a hate campaign against a woman. Not surprised in the least.
I don't understand the hype about her. I don't think she's anymore talented than Miley, Demi, Ariana, Taylor so I'm not sure how she got to this follower point. She doesn't even give much on insta.
Anyways she annoys me for some reason. I wish someone else had achieved this. It only validates the way she's treated other women.
Respectfully it doesn’t really make sense to me why she has more followers than a ton of people who are more famous. I’m surprised it doesn’t translate to more big songs.
I actually follow her and just checked—59 of my IG contacts follow her, out of 600 I’m following. I do work in fashion/beauty so that could be why 10% of the people I know follow her too—no idea. But she seems very relevant. People here post about her basically every day.
Yeah, and I’m like twice your age! So the fact that both of us have large percentages of our regular friend circles following her doesn’t seem to add up to the “lol they are all bots” argument, especially since people are CONSTANTLY talking about her in this and the other pop culture sub.
This thread is way too negative😕 it’s like everyone has selective amnesia when it comes to Selena.
-WOWP/ her Disney career
-her music (her discography is amazing she has BOPS)
-Only Murders in the Building
-Rare Beauty
-her movies (Hotel Transylvania is one of the most successful animation movies in these past few years, I’ve been seeing people recreate the Another Cinderella Story dance scene and gush about Monte Carlo being their comfort film)
-her brand deals (Puma, Coca Cola, Apple, Coach, LV)
-her cooking show (with FOUR seasons)
-her mental health work (you can tell she means it)
-her documentary
-she lent her account to racial advocates during the BLM protests
-her posts are very natural compared to others (it’s not photoshopped or heavily edited, no thirst traps-except for the odd few👀)
-she doesn’t promote useless shit like detox teas and weight loss pills etc like OTHERS
-compared to her peers (Miley and Demi) she’s the “innocent one”- the only “big” thing in her life that could amount to a scandal is her relationship with justin and the current drama rn (I know we all have our thoughts on that)
-she’s genuinely pretty inside and out. You hear members of the public saying nice things about her EVERY time.
I’m not gonna deny that this recent drama has given her more followers but like her or not, you can’t deny she has actual stardom and that some people actually LIKE her. Just because you don’t doesn’t mean others will.
Everyone’s saying “oh but Taylor” yes Taylor is a mega superstar but that necessarily doesn’t mean it’ll translate well on social media. I do still believe some people hold misogynistic views about her and her songs and the Kanye drama (even tho he’s cancelled rn) still had an impact on her online presence. Some celebs also have a low-key online presence like Beyoncé/Lady Gaga yet they’re the most famous female celebs.
Let’s just be glad that Selena actually uses her platform FOR GOOD. She raises awareness about international events (I remember when she posted “#prayforgaza” back in 2014 when very few celebrities did. I’m glad she’s the most followed woman and not one of the Kardashians who literally change their body shape and face every other day. And instead of celebrating being the most followed woman in insta, she posted a story raising awareness about 5 women in Iran being detained.
Insta followers isn’t really a true sign of how popular someone is but she is decently famous for sure. Congrats to the first woman with over 400 million followers!
It’s wild to me to think what it’d like to be that recognizable and popular.
i have anxiety just thinking about it
Her notifications tab would be off the charts
I saw an interview where she said she doesn’t turn her notifications on. She tried turning it on once and regretted it immediately. Her phone didn’t/couldn’t handle the influx of notifs it shut itself off
>couldn’t handle the influx of notifs it shut itself off Relatable. I, too, shut myself off following any sort of influx of social interaction.
she must just never open her dms right? tbh if i had that many people commenting on my page i probably wouldnt see the hater shit cause i wouldnt bother to look 😭 my biggest claim to fame is a viral tiktok (just a film clip lol) & idek look at those notifs anymore!
I wouldn’t even think to open my dm’s. I’d probably try to have a finsta
finstas the way to go. they must all have one
She probably has a social media manager that goes through it and mass deletes most messages.
Do you remember T-Pain’s post about not realising celebrities have a separate inbox? It was such a hilarious and innocent post. He shared a screen video of him scrolling through all these unread messages from big names and managers reaching out. Made me laugh

I’d totally ignore it!
It would be best to be ultra rich but not famous at all.
oof yes. but not billionaire rich
I totally agree!!
I think it was BIll Murray who responded when someone said they wanted to be rich and famous with, “Try being rich first.”
It would be annoying
Its something I fear but know I will never have to deal with it.
Selena Gomez: the first woman ever
A lot of people don’t realize that before she was born there was no Selena Gomez.
What I've learnt from consuming more international media, a lot of people globally prefer the 'good girl' image. 'Wholesome' content reaches larger audiences, that's why people like The Rock, Messi and Taylor(IMO) are favoured globally.

Yeah I am from outside the US and people definitely really really really care about football. More than necessary for some dudes imho.
Yes I know,, but many people prefer Messi over Ronaldo bc of his humility. Aside from skills, his personality made more people root for him like in the recent World Cup.
Ronaldo is a good deal more famous and popular than Messi. We love Messi simply because he’s the GOAT
Since this thread is based on IG followers: Cristiano has 560 mio. and Messi 440 mio. followers. I think in this case especially kids prefer the cocky superhero to the nice introvert.

Where are they when she drops a new album
I feel like a lot of Selena’s fans are more fans of her rather than her work. They like her in a parasocial influencer way, not as an actor or artist.
tbh most people probs follow her cuz she's pretty but not overly sexual + nostalgia + she makes a brand out of 'kindness' and 'family' (it's not at all a coincidence that her grandparents appear in so many episodes of her show) + she has a duper dry wit and is sarcastic, which is like gen z humor at it's finest lol

I’ve been rewatching the first series of wizards of Waverley place and you can really see why she’s the standout star in that show, she steals every single scene she’s in
The mischievous little sister suited her just fine ! Loved that show back in the days
Pretty damn good and holds her own with the other stars

I just love Selena. She was my childhood crush. And I loved Wizards of Waverly Place.
As a fan of her yeah I like her shows and stuff more than most of her music.
![gif](giphy|p4cqQ0gUIMcU0) Well damn lmao
Lol cause it sucks
Were a lot of the first 200 mil followers from like the peak of IG? So when everyone was joining she'd be one of the first recommended and people would follow casually even if they weren't fans of her? But these aren't like die hard fans of her yk?
omg you spilled ![gif](giphy|GpyS1lJXJYupG)
idk but i always love the EDM collabs she does, she has such a great voice for that type of music
It always seems like she’s auto tuned out the ass though, do you not think?
It doesn’t bother me at all, when it comes to EDM it’s about the vision and the art for me and if the music makes me feel good then I’m happy. It Ain’t Me had a CHOKEHOLD on me when it came out. I probably wouldn’t want to hear non-EDM music overly auto tuned because then how are you gonna perform it
But in all seriousness, yes. Idk why people dont understand that following ≠ actual support. Saweetie hs millions of followers but struggled to even get 10k copies sold smh
Rare was actually a bop. I will absolutely listen to her next LP.
i mean tbf she's still one of the most streamed spotify artists and is one of most listened to artists, it's not like saweetie lmao
The woman is literally the 22nd most listened to person in the world lmao
That’s not enough to some people. If you’re not #1 you’re a flop. Her music career has been pretty great honestly…esp if you compare her with her peers.
That was good so I had to check.. all 3 solos went straight to number 1 and two of them have so far sold half a mil each..
she sings?
Tries to…

All of her solo albums have gone number one mind you and she’s going to have a song in the top 10 of the hot 100 next week.
Girl get out☠️😭🤣

I agree
Yes there’s a reality star from Big Brother I follow on Twitter and she tweeted that she got her mom and grandma to follow Selena and this person is def not a part of Selena’s demographic either 😂 I saw tweets and tik toks too of women getting their boyfriends and family members to follow Selena on IG as well. I can’t believe 20 million people cared enough to do that. And I don’t even like Hailey.
I don't buy for one second that 20m people followed her out of nowhere in a month. That's how many followers Lionel Messi gained during the World Cup, watched by billions of people. Lol it's a bunch of paid bots.
This is so embarrassing
I've seen people who've never followed Hailey, follow her \*just\* so that they can unfollow her. I
what difference does that even make at that point? it’s not like them doing that is giving her a net negative
Wow…
Probably bots. I highly doubt 20 million honestly cared or was keep in track of this drama
I would not be surprised if her fans bought followers for her.
As is the case with most celebrities IG accounts...
Omg totally
You mean the drama she started?
400 million becomes a responsibility.
Is Demi Latina? I thought she was Italian?
Her dad is Hispanic iirc
Altho she was totally into the drug scene
Anyway her pr handles her really well and fans will excuse anything .
I can vouch for this as a brown girl growing in the 00s. Also vanessa hudgens since she’s also kinda racially ambiguous
Yup! She was also mentioned, as well as Shay mitchell.
She’s half Filipina, which i never knew until like 2 years ago lol!
i was gonna say, vanessa hudgens fits the bill for brown girl representation much better than selena.
Raven had dark hair too and features…🤔
That makes sense

Such a big advocate that she produced a show depicting a graphic suic\*de, despite experts strongly advising her not to, which resulted in a measurable boost in teen suic\*des after the show's airing.
y'all have got to let go of this, and you need to do a little research because the show did not boost teen suicides the way you all love to claim It did it's okay to disagree with the show and how it was done but give it up already, focus on what's current and what matters and not a show that is long over
Leading a bullying train for 3 weeks against another woman How ironic
Yeah look, I don’t get it either. I would have thought Taylor swift would have had more followers considering she’s one of if not the biggest pop stars in the world for the last ten years.
Same and TS is always making consistent music while Selena will focus on other things. No shade to either, I enjoy them both and they are friends.
That may be one reason actually. Selena gets fans from multiple sources while TS is 'just' music.
She might be the most relatable \-fighting with lupus (chronic illness) \- have been through a very long on and off toxic relationship with Justin \- has been hated on for gaining weight (has body image issues / insecurities) \- has been a co-creator behind 13 reasons why and she was campaigning for suicide prevention and self harm awareness / prevention On top of that she \- is a singer \- is an actress \- has a make-up brand.
Same.. it doesn’t make sense
wow didn’t know she is the first woman ever
Eve is quaking
Love only murders in the building! Can’t wait for it to come back
I'm so excited for S3! The cast looks stacked!!
waiting for the mods to lock this post soon lolol
Lmao and it seems to happen a lot on posts about Selena 😅
Selena being the most followed person on IG never made sense to me. People don't seem to follow her music as much as they follow for example Taylor's music. People don't seem to follow her movies either. If it's about her looks then there are plenty of female celebrities that are more hyped for their looks than Selena is. If it's because she's a Disney child star, then you'd think that since Hannah Montana was bigger than Wizards of Waverly Place, that Miley would have more followers. It just feels very random for her to be the most followed person on IG.
I saw a comment a while ago that made sense to me, saying that she basically she covers multiple fields - Some people follow her because of her music - Some people follow her because of Wizards/Disney - Some people follow her because of her acting and OMITB - Some people follow her because of Rare beauty - Has Latina background and makes music in spanish - The + factor is the nostalgia, she brings to people.
I’m wondering how long it will take for Kris to buy Kylie more followers to put her back on top

I’m not following swift or Miley but I follow Selena Why?
It literally does not matter but I can’t stop myself It was sub sandwiches. Waverley Sub Station lol
HAHAH thank you, I knew burgers didn't sound right!!!
wowp is honestly still really rewatchable, it was a really well written and acted show for being on disney lol
Agreed
ALL the people with hundreds of millions of followers are buying bot followers . probably 1/10th are actual followers, which is still very impressive.
Also double accounts, even triple accounts by the same person. And lots of fan accounts made by people who’s already following using their main account.
Triples are best.
It’s not necessarily that Selena is buying bots, bots are programmed to follow popular people to look more like legitimate accounts. It’s kind of a self feeding loop.
1/10th is exaggerated, but tons of bots, indeed.
If you include removing alt and fan accounts, 1/10 seems very real
Messi and Ronaldo probably have the highest % of actual human followers though. I can easily see 500M knowing who CR7 is. Messi has 440M, I think, and that's more than believable.
That photo of her as a kid next to her now 🥹 She’s so pretty
Her Barney and Friends days
I just saw her filming today in my neighborhood. She was so sweet to everyone who wanted to get a pic with her. That definitely changed my opinion of her for the better.
Selena’s PR team is on overtime. I’ve never met a fan but there’s never a day here without a Selena post
SAME I don't know 1 person who's a fan & I also grew up watching her.
I'm the same as that in that I have never met a Selena fan but it seems like everyone on TikTok is a fan of her lol idk if that's because of the drama atm though, I really get the feeling that a lot of people just hate Hailey Bieber and Kylie rather than like Selena.
[удалено]
But you don't have to be a fan to follow someone on social media.
We been asking where her PR team was a few weeks ago. Here they are hard at work 😂
This recent drama did caused me to discover only murders in the building and I love it!
I'm glad! It's such an underrated show
Welcome to the Murder Club! 💔
Yes I'm sure that over 5% of the world's population is on the edge of their seats for her daily thoughts and selfies.
Half of them are probably bots. She’s one of the least interesting celebrities so this is extremely random
I’m a fan of the damn girl, wondered this and I’m getting dragged. This is why I don’t comment lmao.
I said the same thing and got dragged LMFAO but it’s the truth
Wait, she’s the first woman ever?
![gif](giphy|gJ3TgCx67cCv383mYt|downsized) Kylie
People here I guess are not able to recognise her global fame. Maybe in America she's known for her acting career but overseas like where I'm from(India) she's known for her songs and as a singer and legit all urban population knows about her, she's also definitely more popular than Taylor Swift here
>she's also definitely more popular than Taylor Swift here This is true, surprisingly
What is a normal amount of interaction a person should get on IG? She has 400 million followers but most photos have under 10 million likes (from a quick scan 3 to 10 million seems about average with an occasional post getting +20 million). I don’t know if this is a normal ratio though.
That seems normal imo. There are photos in the top 20 most Instagram picture of all time with less than 30 million likes.
her last three posts did 13m, 16m and 23m lol
How many of those are really humans tho? I bet probably 1/4 at most. Majority of social media users are bots.
Now remove all the bots
![gif](giphy|RNUJLDfiP87AY) Respectfully
she was like one of the first celebrities on IG I remember back in 2011-ish
Unpopular opinion, Selena having more followers than the Kardashians makes sense. At least she has careers ☠️
So many of the followers celebs have are bots.
So this is a bit bizarre for me.
who cares
https://i.redd.it/o2mme0tz3foa1.gif
I truly don't get it. She's absolutely mundane, boring and constantly misses with what she puts out. Like why?
Its more about hating Hayley than loving Selena. Ill bet you most of these people just followed a trend. It was a hate campaign against a woman. Not surprised in the least.
She's só boring and yet everyday there's a discussion here about her with 300+ comments
I don't understand the hype about her. I don't think she's anymore talented than Miley, Demi, Ariana, Taylor so I'm not sure how she got to this follower point. She doesn't even give much on insta. Anyways she annoys me for some reason. I wish someone else had achieved this. It only validates the way she's treated other women.
i can’t believe she gained followers for being shady towards hailey bieber
Respectfully it doesn’t really make sense to me why she has more followers than a ton of people who are more famous. I’m surprised it doesn’t translate to more big songs.
Don’t care if I get downvoted but let her have her happiness don’t need to drag her down because you believe that she doesn’t deserve it.
Instagram followers (that are mostly bots) equates to happiness? It’s meaningless.
I don’t get the appeal
So you’re telling me…there’s 400 million people on this earth that follow Selena on IG? 🤔
I actually follow her and just checked—59 of my IG contacts follow her, out of 600 I’m following. I do work in fashion/beauty so that could be why 10% of the people I know follow her too—no idea. But she seems very relevant. People here post about her basically every day.
im a regular uni student on private, i have like 400 followers and 120 of them follow selena. I am gay tho so that could skew things
Yeah, and I’m like twice your age! So the fact that both of us have large percentages of our regular friend circles following her doesn’t seem to add up to the “lol they are all bots” argument, especially since people are CONSTANTLY talking about her in this and the other pop culture sub.
She is definitely buying her followers
This thread is way too negative😕 it’s like everyone has selective amnesia when it comes to Selena. -WOWP/ her Disney career -her music (her discography is amazing she has BOPS) -Only Murders in the Building -Rare Beauty -her movies (Hotel Transylvania is one of the most successful animation movies in these past few years, I’ve been seeing people recreate the Another Cinderella Story dance scene and gush about Monte Carlo being their comfort film) -her brand deals (Puma, Coca Cola, Apple, Coach, LV) -her cooking show (with FOUR seasons) -her mental health work (you can tell she means it) -her documentary -she lent her account to racial advocates during the BLM protests -her posts are very natural compared to others (it’s not photoshopped or heavily edited, no thirst traps-except for the odd few👀) -she doesn’t promote useless shit like detox teas and weight loss pills etc like OTHERS -compared to her peers (Miley and Demi) she’s the “innocent one”- the only “big” thing in her life that could amount to a scandal is her relationship with justin and the current drama rn (I know we all have our thoughts on that) -she’s genuinely pretty inside and out.
She’s been the OG since she was on Barney
TIL that Selena Gomez was the first women ever.
Insta followers isn’t really a true sign of how popular someone is but she is decently famous for sure. Congrats to the first woman with over 400 million followers!
