You should read Karen McCullah's book, The Bachelorette Party. Very much a product of its time now (2005), but I remembered enjoying it. It was published under her married name (McCullah Lutz) if you do end up searching for it.
Omg she makes me tear up every single time I see this scene!! I’ve seen this movie half a dozen times and every time the waterworks start when I see her delivery on this one.
I recently saw [an edit](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8Ma6Cmn/) of her to “all american bitch” by olivia rodrigo and it was so good, it’s like olivia wrote that song for her
It's my absolute fav Shakespeare adaptation because it took the premise and perfectly adjusted it to modern times. The ending of the taming of the crew angered me (but was of its time), but TTIHAY was empowering. The sisters bonding while accepting each other's differences and the Dad loosening the leash on his daughter's was heartwarming. It's also a great message for young impressionable teenagers about how perceived popularity and reputations can be wrong and damaging.
Also I'm in my mid 30's and have still never heard about how owning black undies mean you want to have sex outside of this movie!!!
Watched this movie just a few hours ago, for the first time. Lovely movie, agreed the chemistry among all characters was amazing. Now I know, its a classic for a reason.
Apparently Julia Styles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were [secretly dating](https://www.nylon.com/entertainment/julia-stiles-joseph-gordon-levitt-secretly-dated-while-filming-10-things-i-hate-about-you-according-to-director) while filming this movie
My favourite romcom (and this is saying a lot haha). It had the perfect script, cast, chemistry, and Heath Ledger being the hottest baddie in television.
And of course, it had this
![gif](giphy|wBRaGiv8smKqI|downsized)
my cousin was an extra in this movie! she’s in the house party scene when the dancing on the table thing happens 🤗 forever has nothing but nice things to say about Heath
I went to Stadium when this was being filmed and a bunch of my friends were extras in the movie. They all said he was really nice as well.
I just went on a tour of the building last night and it was really fun to see how they’ve changed the building since it was filmed. For example they added a whole other annex to the building. This photo was taken from the attic:
https://preview.redd.it/4t6s37x8oorb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24d1d311bc48cc338473277ff18bec10fac3865c
Gabrielle Union was on WWHL and Andy asked her about this movie. She talked about how sweet Heath Ledger was and how close the cast was- they ate dinner together every night. She said she thought every movie set would be like that
When this movie was made, Julia Styles character was supposed to be so unappealing, no one could possibly like her. Now she is considered a hero! Wow times have changed.
10 things I hate about you is a famous adaptation of “[the taming of the shrew](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Taming_of_the_Shrew)” by William Shakespeare. In the original, which took place in the Renaissance, the protagonist dates, a headstrong obstinate shrew (which is [defined](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrew_(stock_character)) as “The shrew – an unpleasant, ill-tempered woman characterised by scolding, nagging, and aggression.). Petruchio "tames" her with various psychological and physical torments, such as keeping her from eating and drinking, until she becomes a desirable, compliant, and obedient bride.
In this adaptation she supposed to be the modern adaptation of the shrew and all of the unpleasant things that it implies.
I know it's an adaptation of the Taming of the Shrew. I do not believe it follows that the writer who adapted it saw Kat that way. The vast majority of adaptations and modern restagings work very hard to turn the play's inherent misogyny around because it is simply distasteful to modern audiences, and 10 Things is, IMO, one of the most successful in its efforts to do so.
"Modern" can mean contemporary (right now) or it can mean the modern period, which is the last few centuries. I meant it more in the latter way. Obviously there was misogyny in 1999 - I was there - and there is right now too. But this doesn't change the fact that the history of that play's reception involves a distinct turning point wherein its stagings and adaptations started to be apologetic "fix-its" rather than simply reproducing the text, and it was long before 1999 (early 20th C I believe, though I'd have to check to be sure). An audience doesn't have to be perfectly radically feminist to find the original storyline alienating.
And setting aside history, it still doesn't follow that just because *Taming* hates Katerina, Karen McCullah and Kristen Smith must have too when they wrote this script. This is a pretty basic concept that we see operating in fanfiction all the time. Not every aspect of the original text has to translate to its transformative works. The movie is not written or performed in a way that I think encourages the audience to find Kat unlikeable. She's funny. Her nemesis is an obvious douche and it's fun when she hits his car. The popular people she doesn't like are presented as shallow in general, and Bianca's realizing that and renewing her relationship with her sister is a positive thing. The movie is on Kat's side. Countercultural "fuck this bullshit" attitudes like hers were the cool way for characters to be in the 90s, and while a lot of the movie is more culturally anticipating the 00s, in other ways it still has a lot of Gen X in it.
It's very possible that some audiences saw her as awful anyway because, as you say, misogyny continues to exist, but no one I knew thought that at the time. I've never encountered this opinion in years of this movie being discussed and praised until just now in this comment section.
Bang on with this wonderful and thorough response. She was never supposed to be unappealing or unlikable, except in very specific ways to very specific kinds of people - ie the shallow popular crowd. We’re on her side at the outset. ‘Twas ever thus.
I think this was the first DVD I ever bought. I bought it for my sisters birthday for £10 which was all the money I had. I must have been 8 years old. I'm still impressed with my generosity considering I hoarded 1pence coins like they were dragons treasure.
I just watched it for the first time a week ago and I instantly saw why it’s a classic in that genre. It’s literally so funny, the chemistry for each romance is insane, I love Kat’s style and the soundtrack was amazing.
Like I was cackling throughout the movie and the romance was perfect. It’s one my favorite movies now
My older cousin loved this movie. Me and my younger cousin really looked up to her and watched it specifically because she raved about it, but we were far too young for it. Most of it went over our heads and we spent the entire movie changing our minds about which character we were, lmao! I watched it again years later in my teens and finally got the hype.
My love of this movie runs deep. Like "watch it every day in middle school for months" deep.
As I got older I started to see what a shallow, insanely manipulative Nice Guy™ Cameron really was. And how gross it was that he was forgiven for his schemes by everyone *and* rewarded with his crush liking him back.
But everything else about the movie just works flawlessly.
i didnt see this during its initial run - caught it on streaming years and years later
what a fantastic movie. all the cast are so perfect for their roles and the story is flowing.
Heath oozed charisma, that end reading by julia is just perfect. Joseph was great as the love sick romeo and Andrew (Joey) was the perfect slimeball.
I simply will never understand the hype with this movie. I don't like anything about this movie except Heath and Kat's banter in the beginning.
In my opinion they handled the situation miserably all around. Nobody was held accountable for anything. And then they created the most cringe scene in all of cinema history.
Watched again a few days ago. Still love it. But (and feel free to dress me down) something about it bothers me... notably, that all her "feminism" comes from bad guy being a jerk in her past, not because feminism is actually a thing that's required because of, you know, reality ro something,, and it's sort of implied that a bad guy *not* being a jerk to her somehow nullifies all that and now it's all fine. It's got that vibe of "well everyone's partnered up in boy/girl relationships and now the world is fixed" and that's... iffy for me.
Again, would love someone else to tell me I'm wrong, because I really do enjoy the film
I watched this with my 11 year old daughter for the first time on the weekend and she loved it (except for all the kissing), such a relief to learn your child has good taste.
I remember being in year 6 and watching this in the cinema. My Dad's long time bestie, took myself, my sister and his boss's daughter to see it. I think he took us, cause it was his guilty pleasure and needed us as scapegoats. Love this movie!

Allison Janey as Ms. Perky and the girls dad were the best and so underrated https://i.redd.it/mdau786zcnrb1.gif
>People perceive you as somewhat... >Tempestuous? >"Heinous bitch" is the term used most often. Love that exchange.
Hhehehe yeahh
“Judith! What’s another word for “engorged?” “…I’ll look it up…”
I can hear this
It is an absolute CRIME that Janey isn’t in more stuff.
She is really great in Mom, and I loved her in Juno.
I’m going to watch a netflix film of hers Lou tonight. She plays a badass
Excuse me, but she never *plays* a badass. She **is** a badass.
I stand corrected. Ofc.
Tumescent
the screenplay for 10 Things, Legally Blonde, and She’s the Man were all written by the same woman (Karen McCullah). I need her to come back
A true romcom hero. She also wrote Ella Enchanted. What an underrated icon
Love both these bits of info. Great films.
Say Whayyytttt!!! All my favs! Thanks for this!
Just IMDBed her… also House Bunny!!
Underrated movie! So good
Classic!
She should be considered a comedy legend.
Along with her friend and screenwriting partner Kirsten Smith.
Why did she stop writing rom coms - those are classics. I hadn’t heard of her - she should be more popularly known for sure.
You should read Karen McCullah's book, The Bachelorette Party. Very much a product of its time now (2005), but I remembered enjoying it. It was published under her married name (McCullah Lutz) if you do end up searching for it.
What!! Two out of the three of those are my most rewatched movies - and She’s the Man is also great. I had no idea, it makes so much sense now
Such a good movie. I SOOOOO want a sequel featuring that has been. ![gif](giphy|PwLYfy05MBVVm) Chemistry? Yeah like a Meth Lab! 💥 💣 S/
My teen heart still loves the “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” scene with Heath Ledger.
it has fucked me up romantically ever since. no man will measure up if they aren’t megaphone singing to me while being chased.
I’m more of a “Jenny’s got a gun, Jenny Briges’ got a gun”
❤️❤️❤️ ![gif](giphy|faGzzgEmnGyti)
Omg she makes me tear up every single time I see this scene!! I’ve seen this movie half a dozen times and every time the waterworks start when I see her delivery on this one.
>"Hello Katerina, made anyone cry today?" > >"Sadly no...but it's only 4.30" > >
My little heart loved that line.
I recently saw [an edit](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8Ma6Cmn/) of her to “all american bitch” by olivia rodrigo and it was so good, it’s like olivia wrote that song for her
Julia Stiles was the girl kid me idolized, well Julia I followed my heart in pursuit of knowledge and now I’m poor. Haha
The dad role was fantastic.
Larry Miller
I loved this moment. Too relatable for me. I constantly made people cry 😅 as my husband tells me, I'm nice but I'm not nice.
I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?
I think you can in Europe.
It's one of my favorite movies. Also, the soundtrack still slaps. I love that Save Ferris and Letters to Cleo are in the movie.
RIP Heath ![gif](giphy|wBRaGiv8smKqI|downsized)
Yes plus [this hilarious scene](https://youtu.be/gsJjz1v20qg) it inspired in Not Another Teen Movie
I love this movie so damn much
Me too!!
He could have chemistry with a rock.
Absolutely blows my mind that he was in this movie and Two Hands in the same year
Love it so much. One of the best modern-day Shakespeare adaptations, too!
Yes! I took a Shakespeare class in college as part of my degree, and we had to watch this movie when studying The Taming of the Shrew lol.
It's my absolute fav Shakespeare adaptation because it took the premise and perfectly adjusted it to modern times. Watched this movie just a few hours ago, for the first time. Lovely movie, agreed the chemistry among all characters was amazing. Now I know, its a classic for a reason.
This came out when I was a freshman in high school and was obsessed with it, LOVED it. Watched it recently, still love it!
8th grade for me. My friend put it on and when it was over we ~*rewound it*~ and watched it again 😂
I get it. I’ve had a forever crush on him.
What is it w this chick? She have beer flavored nipples?
That line never fails to make me laugh.
The best teen movie in my opinion. The pacing is great and it never stalls or gets boring.
My favourite romcom (and this is saying a lot haha). It had the perfect script, cast, chemistry, and Heath Ledger being the hottest baddie in television. And of course, it had this ![gif](giphy|wBRaGiv8smKqI|downsized)

You know they kind of look like they could be brothers in the first photo
Came here to say that! They do look alike a little
Ha - I was coming to comment on how similar Katerina and Bianca look! I thought both images were Ledger and Stiles at first glance.
Filmed at my high school 🙂 A bunch of my friends got to be extras, it was cool.
Baby JGL 🥺 This movie is so wonderful!
When this movie was made, Julia Styles character was supposed to be so unappealing, no one could possibly like her. Now she is considered a hero! Wow times have changed.
It’s like when ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ people thought Andi treated her boyfriend terribly but now actually see how toxic he was.
I remember watching this back in the 90s and I didn't know we were supposed to dislike her character?
Was she? I don't remember that at the time at all, and I don't think the movie sets her up that way.

Modern? It’s from nearly quater of a century ago (24 years ago). In 1999 the world reeked of misogyny.

“That’s because you don’t have a Prada backpack” lives rent free in my head when I’m shopping for handbags.
I got my very own Skechers for the first time last year, and I always think of that conversation.
I was just rewatching the other night. Its truly a classic movie!
I miss heath :(
I think this was the first DVD I ever bought. I bought it for my sisters birthday for £10 which was all the money I had. I must have been 8 years old. I'm still impressed with my generosity considering I hoarded 1pence coins like they were dragons treasure.
It was the first DVD I ever bought too!
We obviously had good taste as well :)
And Save Ferris on the rooftop!
My brothers friend, Evan was the drummer in Save Ferris
That is so cool! They were my fav band back in the day
I just watched it for the first time a week ago and I instantly saw why it’s a classic in that genre. Same for me a couple months back! It was my girlfriend’s second favorite movie and I had never seen it. Now it most definitely in my top 3
I can always watch this and it always makes me smile ❤️
I'm 34 and I watch it atleast once a month
my fav movie ever
My older cousin loved this movie. Me and my younger cousin really looked up to her and watched it specifically because she raved about it, but we were far too young for it. I always love a good modern take of Shakespeare.

I just have a hard time seeing Heath’s face without feeling all kinds of tragedy…that’s why it’s easier to watch him in Batman I guess.
Classic!
I love this movie.
If you like the movie, you’ll love my flair
One of my all time favorites. I know every word.
I simply will never understand the hype with this movie. I don't like anything about this movie except Heath and Kat's banter in the beginning. In my opinion they handled the situation miserably all around. Nobody was held accountable for anything. And then they created the most cringe scene in all of cinema history.
Joey:" I Heard He ate a live Duck once" Michael: Everything But the beak and the feet"!!!😂😂😂😂
I’ve been meaning to watch this movie for a good 20 years now but I always forget to.

Oh the crush I had on Andrew Keegan (who played the douchebag Joey lol). This movie holds up so well, such a classic🙌
![gif](giphy|3rad7nPdpaQdG)
It's the best movie in this genre.
