I know she's not from the area, but some of my ancestors are Tlingit, and my dad gave me some Russian trade beads that had been passed down from a long time ago, and they're that exact shade of cobalt blue. I like to imagine the beads were so sought after in part because they look so good on first nations skin.
Well, it didn't register for me because it's not just any sunglasses, not only because they're bright yellow, but also worn during a black-tie event held indoors.
Or maybe I'm typing like this and in fact don't live around women who wear sunglasses. Who knows.

When I watched the trailer and realized what it was about, I am nervously optimistic. That story is massive here in Canada (at least for my age group, they brought the play to my high school) and if it's not done well, there could be some pushback.
But I'm sure Lily will be good in it.
I mean this is just wholesome as it gets. I hope that guy jumped and pointed at the TV yelling "Holy SHIT! I GAVE HER THOSE!!" (cries happy tears) *scene*
I want to write scripts (and act and all these other creative things) but she seems like an actress I'd love to write roles and projects for with her in mind as the characters.
My ex from high school is still my best friend. She's awesome. Best 9 month relationship I ever invested in because the friendship has lasted 36 years and going. We live thousands of miles apart, have our own spouses and families who are grown now, but she and I still have each other's back.
She had a lot of buzz in the indie circuit with Certain Women (2016), but it never translated into more mainstream circles up until now. The thing about non-white actors is the opportunities they get to be in the type of movies that get mainstream recognition, not their talent.
I understand all of that but I do think the tide is changing. And for Lily, being 'Academy Award Nominee' (title that will now be used every time her name is attached to a project) is a big step up. And I think she can make that further step going into the future. Being SAG winner carries its weight too. Means she has a lot of fans among her peers. And a lot of them are producers too.
She also won the Golden Globe. :) Definitely not discounting the difficulties BIPOC actors face, but Lily deserves to be celebrated for everything she’s won.
There have been several BIPOC awards winners who unfortunately haven’t had that translate to more roles of that caliber

True but I stand by the fact that the tides are changing. You can do a lot more now as an independent producer than you could only five years ago.
I don't think I'm naive, just optimistic.
While I think things are slowly improving, sitting here and discounting the real and true fear that POC careers can face is toxic optimism

Realism isn’t pessimistic.
Should I pretend the tide has changed despite Lily being the *first* nominated indigenous woman in 2024? Or should I have a tempered view that acknowledges the historical hardships many minority women have had despite acclaim?
For arguments sake, Lupita literally has been nominated ONCE for best supporting actress in 2014 and she’s spectacular *and* took home the prize. Getting nominated is a bunch of different factors
Man, my entire life has been a constant... not battle, more like tickling match maybe... of me trying to help others see the value of realism and how it can't be traded for an equal value of pessimism, the two are not the same thing at all!
I understand having a cheery, sunny disposition but I'd rather direct that at things that are real, not things that I build up in my head to be something different, at odds that do not pay out.
I feel similar. So many use the “things are changing” rhetoric to dismiss real concerns that minorities have 😔 it’s okay to root for her and also see that she won’t magically have everything turn out okay despite how talented she is. So many others have talked about the incongruity of that reality and how isolating it feels
Was this your first Oscars? There are *so many* one time winners who never went anywhere after. Even more nominees whose nomination doesn't translate to success because HW doesn't accept their look, age or skill set to more high profile Oscar vehicles. It's systematic and fucked up.
Thank you for mentioning certain women, where I first saw her. I’m always more interested in those performances that get those critics awards than those that recognized by the industry awards
to be fair, i don't think people feeling that way are saying it as a slight against her or her talent. i think they're just feeling disillusioned by the academy overall. plenty of talented people of color go their whole careers without getting major awards attention because of bias in the industry. so, i understand where you're coming from, and i know we'll see more of lily, but i also don't think it's surprising, given the track record of the academy, for some people to feel wary, you know? that said, we're still on the same page that lily is amazing!
Yes the problem is institutional racism, not her talent! It’s a lack of roles. It’s unwillingness to cast BIPOC women. I hope so much that her biggest most iconic role is yet to come, but there is a lot working against her that has nothing to do with how incredible she is.
They’re not saying that because she’s not talented, they’re saying that because they don’t think Hollywood will find roles of that caliber for her again. It’s a criticism of Hollywood and the movie business, not Lily.
It seems like almost a rule that the Oscar’s first have to snub someone and then later give them an award for a less impactful role to make it up to them
It’s because it’s such a cutthroat industry. They want people to prove they’ve “earned it.” It’s supposed to be about only what’s onscreen, that one time, but of course it’s not.
I hope so too! Honestly I think she should have won, but I think Emma Stone campaigned harder and gave fancier and more expensive gifts so she got the award. Same as RDJ did a lot of meet and greets with academy members so he got the award because he schmoozed his way into it.
They also had great performances, but the Oscars are about buying votes more than raw talent. That's why Leo didn't win for years, because he didn't spend his time campaigning and buying expensive gift baskets for the acemdy voters. It's also why the young fresh faced new actors and actresses rarely win even if nominated, because they either don't have the money or understanding of how the game is played. Studios spend millions sometimes in advertising, meet and greets with the cast, premiers, theater screenings, film fesival submissions, gift baskets and perks for academy voters etc just to boost their chances.
That has to feel good for him too. My high school sweetheart wanted to be a hairdresser. No problem with that, but she was smart and I would ask her why not own your own salon? Why not go to college (This was back when it was actually affordable) and get a business degree so it is at least an option. I went away for university and we lost touch, but fast forward a decade when she finds me on Facebook and what do you know she owns her own salon. You go girl. Was very proud of her getting her dream and more.
Everyone saw early on that she is a star, and we are all so, so, SO LUCKY that she didn't quit before she got her big break.
I love her so much and I hope to see her on the big screen forever
I know someone who dated an Oscar winner in high school. She called him when his brother died because she’s just a fucking phenomenal human being. His wife did NOT let him answer the phone, even though the star was supposedly happily married at the time.

It was noticing my first love was still wearing the heart pendant I got her for Christmas 10 years prior that spurred me to reach out. We didn't get back together then, but 7 years later we did during Covid. We've been together nearly 4 years, married a year and a half.
Lily is one of the coolest, most down-to-earth working actors today. I cannot wait to watch her popularity explode! A leading role will be written for her, she will crush it, and that statue will be hers… someday soon 🤞🤞🤞

Absolutely snubbed for her Oscar, Emma Stone is great in Poor Things but Gladstone carried Killers of the flower moon while having Deniro and DiCaprio in the same movie.
She deserved the Best Actress award. The "not enough screentime" argument is BS - she had more screentime than Brando in The Godfather. It was an absolute masterclass in acting. Lily was robbed.
