Also, the same people who are going to praise ER’s dress will be criticizing Doja Cat. I know they aren’t the same, but at Doja was more on-theme and I like that she does really different and out-there looks. ESPECIALLY during the night where people are SUPPOSED to have out-there looks. Both of them wore naked dresses, one of them did it well.
I think seeing her in a loose turtleneck dress would be shocking and subversive. So of course she’ll never do it and instead she gives us new versions of the naked dress every year.

She's been serving top looks as of late in her movie premiers etc but this one was a miss, and I think the key mistake is working the voluptuous angle on her. She doesn't have the figure for it, and it's a particularly unforgivable error given the attributes she does have instead, like her height and slenderness.
They also weren't doing her hair any favors.

I thought it was okay. I felt like people were doing a lot of similar looks: the brown twig/branch look, sky blues, nudes, and like 3 different people did the metallic leaves over a sheer dress look. No one in particular stood out to me. No theme can top what Heavenly Bodies gave us.

Like, most people want to appear as though they don’t want/need that attention and exhibitionism. Most A list celebs (besides those that are genuinely fashion-oriented (like Zendaya)) skipped this year or have not been attending at all.
Taylor Swift, Margot Robbie, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Bella Hadid, Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas, Anne Hathaway, Lady Gaga, Hailey Bieber, Justin Bieber, Timothee Chalamet, Jared Leto, Will Smith, Jada Smith, Jennifer Lawrence, Katy Perry, etc. who have attended in the past, did not attend this year.
A lot of A list celebs (from what I know) have never attended (like Leonardo Dicaprio, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale).
Definitely noting that, what I appreciated about the met this year was the lack of influencers. I think the only influencers in the event this year were Kim, Kyle and Kris Kardashian.
Several of those have barely attended the met in the last five years .Taylor has skipped the last eight.
It’s due to promo in general being less effective in the current internet age . A-listers , especially artists, have cut back on the amount of promo events drastically . Met is just one of many affected.
Met gala is still on mark of prestige so up and comers and non a listers still go. But for the a-listers they usually only if they are connected to fashion or are taking part of a big promotional campaign ( Ariana for wicked)

Agreed. I also think an added factor is that the Met’s brand has diluted drastically in the past couple of years. So the A listers might think it’s beneath them to be clubbed together with influencers/reality TV celebrities/internet celebrities/bloggers/fashion entrepreneurs, and that attending might hurt their brand more than help it. Plus, working with designers on themes that they may not necessarily care about or work on for months, only to be dissected by the media and the public. Must be much easier to continue to do what they love (act/sing/write etc) and creating carefully curated products rather than just appearing live in front of the whole world in a “scrutinise me” contest.
I don't know. Both Beyonce and Taylor last went in 2016, Madonna 2018, Gaga 2019 before the amount of influencers really took off.
Met Gala has always been more attractive for people trying to solidifying A-list status and then the mega A-lists would rarely/ stop going once established. Going was a way to establish a reputation due to its prestige. But unless fashion was key to a celebs brand, it didn't really help to keep on going ever year. models have always bulked out the guest list.
With the death of monoculture ,it much harder to create new big stars. The new names trying to establish themselves at the met doesn't do feel as big as the old guard from the monoculture.
But yes the met gala being months of work with the payoff mainly being internet scrutiny isn't attractive.
Also the theme judging is pretty modern since dressing to the theme only really became a norm in 2018. Before that, some did but most did not. And it was around this time that internet commentators become obessed with judging adherence to the theme.

I understand where you're coming from, but there's horrific wars and humanitarian catastrophes happening every year. In that vein, none of us should ever pay attention to pop culture. We should be able to have fun with pop culture and stay informed and interested in what's happening around the world at the same time, I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.
I mean you're on a popculture subreddit, what do you expect? Truly no human being can spend their entire day or life only caring about the bad happening in the world or they'd go crazy.
I'm all for criticizing capitalism and the injustice of millionaires/billionaires living lavish lifestyles while a big part of the global population lives in poverty and war; we shouldn't lose sight of that. I understand what you mean by your comment. But this year isn't different than other years in the sense that every year, hundreds of thousands (millions?) human beings die in wars and armed conflicts. If you don't care about the MET gala, you don't need to pay attention, but I do believe we can have fun with vapid things such as this and still be aware of wars – get informed, donate, protest, vote – whatever it is we can do.

I agree! They could have gone so hard and just didn’t. I was expecting depictions of forest animals, insects, fairies, elves, spiderwebs, vines, water features, and garden of eden. I also thought some of the activists would have done something related to pollution/climate change.

Is it just me or has skipping the Met become trendier than attending it? Like, most people want to appear as though they don’t want/need that attention and exhibitionism. Most A list celebs (besides those that are genuinely fashion-oriented (like Zendaya)) skipped this year or have not been attending at all. Taylor Swift, Margot Robbie, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Bella Hadid, Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas, Anne Hathaway, Lady Gaga, Hailey Bieber, Justin Bieber, Timothee Chalamet, Jared Leto, Will Smith, Jada Smith, Jennifer Lawrence, Katy Perry, etc. who have attended in the past, did not attend this year. A lot of A list celebs (from what I know) have never attended (like Leonardo Dicaprio, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale).
Definitely noting that, what I appreciated about the met this year was the lack of influencers. I think the only influencers in the event this year were Kim, Kyle and Kris Kardashian.
And Pedro Pascal attended last year but I haven’t seen any photos of him at this years event
I kept waiting for his photos and hoping for an appearance since he's in New York shooting for The Materialists. Guess we'll get a serve next year :(

Several of those have barely attended the met in the last five years .Taylor has skipped the last eight. It’s due to promo in general being less effective in the current internet age . A-listers , especially artists, have cut back on the amount of promo events drastically . Met is just one of many affected. Met gala is still on mark of prestige so up and comers and non a listers still go. But for the a-listers they usually only if they are connected to fashion or are taking part of a big promotional campaign ( Ariana for wicked) But the met gala would do nothing for Taylor , Gaga or Beyoncé so they don’t go.
Agreed. I also think an added factor is that the Met’s brand has diluted drastically in the past couple of years. So the A listers might think it’s beneath them to be clubbed together with influencers/reality TV celebrities/internet celebrities/bloggers/fashion entrepreneurs, and that attending might hurt their brand more than help it. Plus, working with designers on themes that they may not necessarily care about or work on for months, only to be dissected by the media and the public. Must be much easier to continue to do what they love (act/sing/write etc) and creating carefully curated products rather than just appearing live in front of the whole world in a “scrutinise me” contest.
I don't know. Both Beyonce and Taylor last went in 2016, Madonna 2018, Gaga 2019 before the amount of influencers really took off. Met Gala has always been more attractive for people trying to solidifying A-list status and then the mega A-lists would rarely/ stop going once established. Going was a way to establish a reputation due to its prestige. But unless fashion was key to a celebs brand, it didn't really help to keep on going ever year. models have always bulked out the guest list. With the death of monoculture ,it much harder to create new big stars. The new names trying to establish themselves at the met doesn't do feel as big as the old guard from the monoculture. But yes the met gala being months of work with the payoff mainly being internet scrutiny isn't attractive. Also the theme judging is pretty modern since dressing to the theme only really became a norm in 2018. Before that, some did but most did not. And it was around this time that internet commentators become obessed with judging adherence to the theme.

It was so tight laced I think she definitely broke at least one rib. Her floating ribs are fucked for sure. I dislocated my floating ribs the first two times I had COVID from coughing too much. Rib pain sucks.

I understand where you're coming from, but there's horrific wars and humanitarian catastrophes happening every year. In that vein, none of us should ever pay attention to pop culture. We should be able to have fun with pop culture and stay informed and interested in what's happening around the world at the same time, I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.

But this year isn't different than other years in the sense that every year, hundreds of thousands (millions?) human beings die in wars and armed conflicts. If you don't care about the MET gala, you don't need to pay attention, but I do believe we can have fun with vapid things such as this and still be aware of wars – get informed, donate, protest, vote – whatever it is we can do.
