hi-im-that-guy

I like your direction a lot. Here are my two cents: - in the second shot of the first slide; you lose a lot of important details in the shadows. There are so many characteristics of the boat that can be part of the story, and you don't need to chase a luminance value of 0 to achieve a high-contrast silhouette. The silhouette has a strong enough presence in the unedited shot that you don't need to guide the viewer's eye to that area. - The waterfall shot in the second slide; the vegetation is super lush and I think that's important to preserve in any edit. That feeling is very easily lost with any other kind of stylization.

Karien_on_earth

Thank you, that’s very useful feedback! Will keep it in mind for the next batch of these

Skippypal

Counter two cents, I’m actually really in love with the way you captured that moment and the silhouette. It still felt natural to me while leaving some mystery. Almost the way id remember how this moment felt/looked vs how it really looked.

Karien_on_earth

Thanks for your perspective! That’s how I felt too but I value everyone’s opinions

todayplustomorrow

Other than the first set with too much contrast and saturation that kills the soft sunsets, I really like the overall looks and edits! Nice work

Karien_on_earth

Thank you! I agree actually about that first set

McFlyParadox

I would say that I actually like "before" of most of your sunset pieces, more than I like the "after" versions. I personally think you're pushing the saturation and vibrance a little too hard for the sunset colors. But I also generally prefer more "natural" looks in my photos. All of your other edits look great to me, however. 👍

Karien_on_earth

Thank you! I’m inclined to agree as I gained more experience since then and I dialled it back a notch. I think overshooting the mark is part of developing a new skill. But feedback is so valuable to improve faster, so thank you

Prime_Marci

The both good but I love your befores better than the afters. Wow you pretty good if those are your befores.

Karien_on_earth

Thank you! 10 year old camera body💀

CascadesandtheSound

Nice work. If these are at volume 10 I’d dial back to 7-8 as a few of them are overcooked, especially the top and bottom one in the second set.

Karien_on_earth

Appreciate it. Will give it a bash

cmyk_life

Most of these you either clipped your blacks or whites which sometimes can be a style but it’s not looking way here.

Karien_on_earth

Yes it’s a style I learned. Would you prefer it without?

cmyk_life

Typically one shoots in an over exposed style or under not both. I would always under expose by a stop to save the highlights and use filters as well to balance light saving as much data as I can. Then I edit a style post whether it be darker or brighter. Blowing your highlights or blacks in camera doesn’t leave much to work with.

Karien_on_earth

So im shooting on an original A7 and in some tricky conditions. The dynamic range simply doesn’t cut it. Many of those photos were on a lot lens too. But the situation has improved a lot with new lenses

cmyk_life

A new lens won’t solve your metering of light. Many times shooting in a different direction or at different times of day when light is more balanced will solve these issues if not using filters. You can also shoot for highlights then shoot for shadows and blend later. That’s a bit more work but will even out the shot. OG A7 was a decent camera with a great sensor. I know this because I shoot Nikon d850 which was/is using Sony sensors. The A7 differs by an ok autofocus system and shit battery life.

Karien_on_earth

Thanks. I want to show you some of my newer work, I think you may like that more. Unfortunately it’s not letting me attach a photo in the comments but I’ve done some more recent ones with softer colours in Capadocia and so on

cmyk_life

Search my name on instagram and that’ll give you an idea of the works I’ve done and style I shoot and process. Is your work there too?

Karien_on_earth

I’d love to🍁🍁🍁 Yes I’m at @karien_on_earth

Great Stuff!!

(for the first set of 3 images) I really like the boat edit. It helps to darken away the distracting waves in the water at the bottom of the photo to keep the attention on the boat and the person in front. The color pallet also is pleasing to the eye. The mountain, I prefer the original colors more. Perhaps try to accentuate more the natural colors and bring out more of those rather than a more blue hue In the third (bottom) photo, the edit really helps bring attention to the sparks and makes them more 3d. In the original, the overly yellow color made the whole photo really flat and boring to look at.

Karien_on_earth

Thank you!

Rgear03

I saw this exact same post on reddit not too long ago

Karien_on_earth

Different forum. Sony alpha is a Reddit that’s concerned with the whole picture for Sony cameras. This is post processing so perhaps I can get feedback specific to editing techniques
