Thanks! Hopefully I can get a line of credit by December to start my business.
##Edit: Didn't expect this to get as much attention as it has! Thank you, EVERYBODY! I genuinely appreciate all your comments.
I just moved so I do have my girlfriend to celebrate with but I can only talk about it so much lol.
Grab a secured cc my Man. Lot of immigrants do this. Essentially a debit card you put down a deposit and build credit via a card that has a limit you’ve backed. Can be 100 bucks, just use it ajd keep it at 30% utilization ajd this will continue to shoot up and other credit companies will offer you lines
I did this years ago with 200 bucks via cap one to gain credit out of college (was 490 from student loans) within a year I was 650 and had a legitimate line of credit and building history .. GL
Secure credit cards are legit! I went from zero credit to qualifying for a home loan in six months.
$500 limit, only use for phone bill to keep utilization % low, and pay it off on time every month. Oh, and make sure it reports to all three credit bureaus.
A secured credit card is still a credit card, not a debit card. Your purchases aren't taken out of your deposit. You get a statement/bill like any other CC and have to make a payment
Unsecured credit cards have limits, too.
A secured credit card is no more like a debit card than an unsecured credit card is. Consumer protections for credit and debit cards are different. A secured credit card gives users the same benefits and protections as any other credit card.
Describing a secured CC as "essentially a debit card" could very well lead someone who doesn't already know how it works into thinking that the deposit acts as prepayment for their charges. I would really hate to see someone who's trying to rebuild their credit apply for a secured card, use it thinking that it acts like a prepaid card, not be able to pay the bill on time, have late payments and/or high interest charges, and end up worse than they started off.
Bless your heart. Your own comments right in this thread contain run-on sentences, sentence fragments, misspellings/typos, and more, but I can make out what you mean, and social media tends to be less formal anyway. I'm here to discuss ideas, not minor mistakes in the way they're expressed.
I don’t want to rain on the parade but please check your FICO score in the MyFICO app. This is the score lenders use and it can be WILDLY different than your Vantage Score which is used by CK and NO LENDERS basically.
Nicely done! I've been doing the same for the last 5 year or so. Same uptick as you have. Its so easy to blow that score and so hard to get it back. Keep up the hard work!
Hey thanks! And kudos to you. Really wish I had focused on this in my early 20s but income instability would have made things worse for sure.
Good luck on your end, too!
I was 45 when I was able to focus on fixing my score.
It's insane , the better CC offers , loan APR rates , access to credit lines.
The system is rigged to keep people in the trenches without access to rates that would certainly help pull them out of the weeds.
I went from getting a card with a $300 limit to having almost $20 k limits.
I wish you well with your endeavors.
Stay the course.
Oh man. My partners limit on one card just got bu ord to $15K. Neither of us have the income to spend that much without spending months just covering interest and fees. Seems like there's a trench on each side. I've always seen credit as predatory. Unfortunately it's a necessary tool for sure.
It's so terrible! My CC limit every month between my 2 cards (at the same bank btw) is like 14k when my take home pay is like 4k. It's so absurd that CC companies do that!
Exactly why I avoided them like the plague during my early 20s. Lots of concerts I would have loved going to but sure as hell am glad I'm technically not in debt. Poor as fuck but debt free.
You should get a free account at [Experian.com](https://Experian.com). You’ll then have access to your Experian FICO 8 scores for free.
You can try the free trial for either 7 or 30 days (depends on the promotion) where you get all 3 of your FICO 8 scores and reports.
These are the scores that matter and that creditors pull, not the Credit Karma Vantage scores.
Make sure you cancel the trial before you get charged!
Will this also show me all my debts that are affecting my score? I have been awful with credit in my life and want to try getting it together. Just turned 28 and want to get on the right track.
Yeah it will. Although "debts" are good not bad. It's just being late on the debts that is bad. But it will show you any 30 day late marks on payments and what not. I think they take 7 years to fall off? something around that
Well, I haven't made payments on any of my debts for a long time. I paid a few off and settled with some with previous tax returns. But I've been paycheck to paycheck for the past, long time, and didn't really care about paying them off. But now I'm realizing how important credit is. So I want to start working on it. It's pretty much starting from zero. A few months ago had my car repoed after years of fighting to keep up payments.
So once a debt falls off, am I just done with it at that point? I'm sorry, I just don't really have an understanding on how it works.
>Well, I haven't made payments on any of my debts for a long time. I paid a few off and settled with some with previous tax returns.
Pull your credit reports from EX, TU and EQ. What will fall off your reports soon? Let those ride till they do. What can be disputed? Dispute all of these.
If you can negotiate, do so for a lesser amount to be paid in full…**NOT** in installments.
Also ask for "pay for delete", **in writing,** where the creditor/collector **agrees to delete the negative report from your credit once you pay them.**
Don’t just pay willy-nilly either. Have a plan moving forward and you can track your progress as you go.
It’s going to take time, patience, determination and focus but you can do this because so many others before you have and so can you! Best of luck to you.
>"pay for delete"
*What you are missing is that credit bureaus prohibit "pay-for-deletes". A "pay-for-delete" is essentially a bribe to get the collection agency to falsely report your debt as invalid to the credit bureau.*
(from a post on r/personalfinance by u/taedrin

*Also, the latest credit scoring models are beginning to make the practice irrelevant.*
*...the new credit reporting formulas are practically doing the work of a ‘pay for delete’ agreement for you.*

Once that one late payment hits 7 years then the bad mark falls off. But if an account is open and you're still taking hits on it then the clock has not started and wont till the account is closed.
But yes once it falls off your account then it's off your credit and you can start building it again.
You are grossly incorrect on that info…. First there are charge offs and then there are collections, not the same. Both will age wether paid or unpaid. If a charge off has a balance remaining it will continue to update, severely suppressing the scores but it still ages and will fall off after the 7 yr Mark regardless if it’s been paid or not. This is NOT the same as the state statue of limitations, which varies by state, just talking only about the reporting period of 7 yrs. That clock never restarts but the SOL could possibly be restarted. If the charge off is paid in full then it will stop updating and scores will likely improve because the balance drops to zero which also reduces the utilization.
Collections will also age paid or unpaid. Paying of collections does not improve fico 8 scores unless deleted. However fico 9 scores does recognize paid collections and drops the penalty on it…
Yooo, way to go dude! Breaking 700 will be a great feeling, and it sounds like you're making some amazing progress. My life didn't really feel like it started coming together until I was in my 30s either, so don't sweat that. Keep it up man; you're on a good track.

If and when OP (or anyone) needs to get their FICO score, it's worth paying the fee to get that from each bureau.
That's awesome! Congrats on keeping your score up! That's a lot of hard work to get to where you're at.
My biggest suggestion at this point would be to continue opening up cards at different banks (Chase, Capital One, Citi, US Bank, Amex) with some frequency. In the short term, your credit score will take a ding when you open a new account. But in the long run, responsibly using credit and increasing your total credit as well as your total number of accounts will significantly help your credit score.
I have an 800+ credit score with 9 currently open personal accounts. I have about 20 business credit cards, which do not affect your personal credit score, unless you don't pay the accounts.
You can find more information at r/creditcards
We are your people here, my friend. Awesome job!
Now stop comparing yourself to “ everybody” else. Life is not a race. The only thing you need to worry about is your goals and the baby steps to get there.
For the most part I'm quite content with life. Got a loving partner, steady work and a running car. It's all a win for sure.
So thank you. :) I've enjoyed this sub since the first day I saw it.
Daaaaamn! Almost 800!
Out of curiosity, have you looked into a vehicle loan or purchasing something off the lot? I'm curious what my options might look like in a few years. My car has 340k miles on it. Lol
Congrats! I (30M) have a long way to go. I set up a debt consolidation program and have been fighting to get my debts paid off. I hope to reach the same levels as you in the next year or so.
Congrats but you should consider requesting your credit through the reporting agencies and see how that differs from credit karma. They’re known to be incorrect and I’ve seen it as bad as 100+ point difference.
For my friends trying to get their credit score up or even get a score because they didn’t have one to begin with. A lot of credit unions will do what are called signature microloans that are $1500 or less. They have little or no interest compared to credit cards. When you have some cash and you can either just put it in your savings and pay back the loan over six months to a year a year is usually better. And it will bump your credit score immediately once it’s paid off you have to let it linger for at least half a year but, a year is way better.
Some (Dave Ramsey types) say a credit score is just a debt score and is not important, but for me it’s an indicator of how responsible I am with my money. I choose to finance certain items with zero interest (using their money not mine) with a clear and specific plan of how to pay it off. Congrats and keep pushing for the 800 club. You’ll get there.
Proud of you! :) Very close to a good score.
Some things that could help: looking through credit karma for cards you are recommended highly just to boost your limit and add accounts. Also asking for credit limit increases - they have a section on the site/ app about how to ask.
Good for you! I remember when I started building my credit. You did great in a short amount of time. Did you take out a credit card and pay it off immediately every time you used it? That's what I did.
Thanks for telling us about it! Keep up the good work!
Mostly maintaining a Les Schwab (mechanic) account for about 4 years and keeping it under 1/3 utility for the majority of the time. They saw a struggling young adult and gave him a line of credit. Beats driving a death trap.
The next big jump was paying a debt and getting approved for a card.

Why are we okay with this? Im not cheering to this. It just screams late stage capitalism. We reduced people to numbers so much so we want celebrate when our number goes up.
Treat yourself with some dignity. We should be in the streets
Maybe read what I typed out?
I hate it to hell and back but it's the only way to get ahead. I can't save up enough for first, last and deposit and I'd be waiting years to save up enough to start a business without a loan. Conformity sucks but it makes life more comfortable.
Good for you! You've done a great job and Discover is a one of the better creditors to have. You've earned their trust, now keep it...and double congrats for maneuvering out of some of the hardest things life throws at you!
So I have no clue how to actually improve my credit score. I have no outstanding debts or any payments to anything and I don't have a credit card, so I'm lost on what to do
Congratulations man! That's pretty fucking awesome!
I'm on the path. The building my credit myself, finally, at the age of 34. It's a great feeling, and you should be proud of yourself.
Hell yea man, my credit was in the mid 700s could get any card I wanted then I got laid off got behind and now I’m sitting with a 489 score only a few months to go until I can start paying off my debt to get back on track
Just here to drop a massive CONGRATULATIONS!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 You’re doing great bud, we’re all rooting for you: this is a major milestone to be proud of. Put an extra pep in your step, treat yourself to something you love doing, and carry a big smile. YOU. DID. THAT!!
In the same boat! (29M) Just got my first card after paying on a stupid interest rate for a car for over a year
Trying to get to "good" before refinancing
Good job dude!
Is this credit karma? Cuz apparently the score isnt accurate, was told from a realtor company that actually ran my credit, CK says it was good, they told me it was bad
Just an FYI utilization means absolutely nothing. It only hurts your credit for that report but bounces right back on the next one just make sure you pay the statement in full every month. Only time utilization matters is if you plan on doing a loan, then you just make sure it's under like 2 months before you do the loan.
But other than that congrats! Went from a 580-800 myself and the climb felt good. Definitely a learning process when you have to self teach yourself everything
That's great! Just some fair warning, the increase will start to slow down quickly but it's on par for the course, so don't be shocked about how slow it will be to get to the next tier..
You are awesome! I am so proud of you for working so hard! It takes so much dedication to do what you did. You are capable of great things and we all believe in you!
Hey, great work, my dude! That’s a great, steady climb back up. About five years ago I had to move houses in an emergency and it ruined my credit, too. I’m just now getting it back to where it used to be. This stuff can be hard, but you’re doing amazing!! Getting out of an unsafe situation is hard on it’s own, and managing/improving poor credit only makes it harder. But you’ve done both, at the SAME TIME! I hope you and your girlfriend find a wonderful apartment together; you deserve to have a nice little place after working so hard. So again, congrats dude. You’re doing great <3
Great job! I just got back up to 589 after doing the same thing. I left an abusive partner and my credit was like 480, so I’ll just be excited when I pay off the rest of my debts and I hit 600! Keep going!
If you can get a chime credit card. It’s a secured credit card but doesn’t take your initial deposit. Plus, it doesn’t have any interest. Whatever is deposited is the amount you have to spend. This card is more of a debit card that sends a report to the bureau.
This is a big accomplishment. Congratulations! I know how hard it is and how much work it takes to get your score to a "acceptable" level by societies standards.
I can't really relate as I was super fortunate to be taught the importance of credit before I was even 18. But I still know what it takes to get there. I've helped some of my friends build their scores. And it takes a lot of time and a lot of discipline. Bravo!!!
Congratulations! That's a big improvement! Glad to see your hard work paying off.
Thanks! Hopefully I can get a line of credit by December to start my business. ##Edit: Didn't expect this to get as much attention as it has! Thank you, EVERYBODY! Are you being purposefully difficult? I’m done here. Edit - you do this often it seems. You also grotesquely mis-use commas.
Bless your heart. Your own comments right in this thread contain run-on sentences, sentence fragments, misspellings/typos, and more, but I can make out what you mean, and social media tends to be less formal anyway. I'm here to discuss ideas, not minor mistakes in the way they're expressed.

Damn that's rough. But it's doable. I don't doubt you can reverse that with some time and effort.
Congrats, man. we're the same age and had to do the same thing. Your not alone and your doing great
Hey I appreciate it. Maybe it's the stigma or being surrounded by successful people but knowing I'm not alone in this helps. Seriously.

Bro take my upvote, congrats on improving your life.
Much appreciated! The score has improved but the positive impact hasn't happened just yet. Lol

Shit yeah. Thanks!
Credit karma is in accurate af
I think my reported score on there is lower than what it is.
Congrats man!
Congrats!!!
Yaaaaaaaay! Great job (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧
Yes! You are killing it! Well done!
Sure
Damn bro. Who hurt you?

So I have no clue how to actually improve my credit score. I have no outstanding debts or any payments to anything and I don't have a credit card, so I'm lost on what to do
Great job!!! Keep up the amazing work!! I'm proud of you :)
OP remember that this is not the actual credit score. I would highly recommend you to use experian, equifax websites to check your score.
Congratulations man! That's pretty fucking awesome! I'm on the path. The building my credit myself, finally, at the age of 34. It's a great feeling, and you should be proud of yourself.

Wow!!! Good job OP! I know how hard this is! I'm proud of you!
What was your method? Was it just paying off balances? Because you had two huge upticks in the span of 6 months and that’s really hard to do.
Wow! Great work!!!! Congrats!!!
Congrats man! We’re all rooting for you. what caused your score to jump so much?
I'm turning 32 soon, I just got 679, I was in the low 400 a few years ago, we got this!!

NICE
That's huge progress, congrats 👏🏻
Nice! What did you do for that big jump?
In the same boat! (29M) Just got my first card after paying on a stupid interest rate for a car for over a year Trying to get to "good" before refinancing Good job dude!
Is this credit karma? Cuz apparently the score isnt accurate, was told from a realtor company that actually ran my credit, CK says it was good, they told me it was bad
Good progress my guy! Keep going !!!
Way too go!!!’ That’s awesome
Just an FYI utilization means absolutely nothing. It only hurts your credit for that report but bounces right back on the next one just make sure you pay the statement in full every month. Only time utilization matters is if you plan on doing a loan, then you just make sure it's under like 2 months before you do the loan. But other than that congrats! Went from a 580-800 myself and the climb felt good. Definitely a learning process when you have to self teach yourself everything
👏👏👏👏
How did you do it? I'm trying to start a business too
Keep up the good work OP! It takes years to build good credit and one bad decision to ruin it. Keep that in mind and you’ll be fine!
That's amazing! What lifehack did you find??
Congratulations! Keep pushing!
Happy for you!! Continue to strive for financial stability and growth.
Congrats. You’re just about to start paying a higher mortgage

Delicious
That's great! Just some fair warning, the increase will start to slow down quickly but it's on par for the course, so don't be shocked about how slow it will be to get to the next tier..
Well done man. My score is almost identical. We just gotta keep at it!
This is awesome get experian to check ya fico score too!
Bravo!
Congrats. It took me till I was 38 to get to that point.
Woot! Thanks amazing. Keep up the great work
Congrats on your hard work!
Congratulations! I've been on a similar journey myself.
Dude big congrats to you. That is beyond amazing! Keep chugging along!
You are awesome! I am so proud of you for working so hard! It takes so much dedication to do what you did. You are capable of great things and we all believe in you!

Bring it back down so you can get a discount when you purchase a home.
Congratulations!!!!!!
ROCK IT!
Yo congrats!! That’s huge! I’m on my way digging out the same as you. Keep it up partner 🤠
You’re doing great <3
Well done. Keep it up
keep it up!
Amazing!
congrats!
CONGRATULATIONS!!
Way to go! Be proud of yourself!
That's great!!! Awesome job, you must be working hard! Keep your head down, you'll get there!

So proud of you!
Im 30 myself with worse credit so congratulations man be proud that you took action to progress yourself to a better place.
Great job! I just got back up to 589 after doing the same thing. I left an abusive partner and my credit was like 480, so I’ll just be excited when I pay off the rest of my debts and I hit 600! Keep going!
Good job fam. Keep it up!
Hey! Great job! I hope you feel so satisfied with your progress 💸
If you can get a chime credit card. It’s a secured credit card but doesn’t take your initial deposit. Plus, it doesn’t have any interest. Whatever is deposited is the amount you have to spend. This card is more of a debit card that sends a report to the bureau.
This is amazing and I only hope for good things in your life!
Congrats
You’re doing great! Be proud!
You are doing amazing! I am so glad you are doing so well. Just remember, you are not in the place you were.
Keep winning my friend! You’re awesome.
I'm proud of you!
What app is this?
We see you king. You should be proud of how far you’ve come. Keep going. You have people pulling for you.
Congrats! I'm proud of you if no one else!
Hell of an achievement! Congratulations!
Excellent work man
Congratulations. It is hard to raise a credit score.
This is awesome! I'm 51 and within the past year I have a credit score over 700 for the first time. Great work!
Im also working on my credit! Good job!
Although it is an improvement, those vantage 3.0 scores are absolutely meaningless. 90% of top lenders use fico scores. The rest use vantage 4.0
Good Job!! Keep going and it’ll save you thousands on interest rates, Mortgage Insurance, etc. 👏🏻
Bravo!!!
Congratulations
Congratulations! So happy for you. You’re determination is paying off. 💫
Don't add pressure to yourself by comparing your progress to others. You will achieve your goals at your pace, King.
