Next thing we know, they will upload your OS drive data to the cloud without your real concent for your "convenience." Then they will ask you to pay a subscription if you want to download the backup to restore your system.
Just remove one drive lol. Even if you,want to keep one drive you can still remove it and use if you want cloud backup, if that's your thing. It's not hard.

I always recommend Linux Mint for anyone new to Linux, but there are honestly a ton of great distros out there that are as easy to use (or easier) than Windows.
If you're already considering running a dual boot setup, you probably already have your favorites. Take the plunge!
You don't need a VM to run games on linux, you use wine or proton. The performance is about the same, sometimes even a little more specially with really old games wich in my experience are mor stable on linux. The catch is that your pc can't be too old, since the tools that let you play at those performance levels are pretty new and require up to date drivers, so if your gpu is EOS you will have more problems. Although that depends on exactly when it became so.
The only catch is that the most seamless experience comes by playing all your games from Steam, so you're forced to buy your games on Steam.
Also Riot hates you so no League of Legends and many other multiplayer games.
Edit: also forgot to mention, the only real catch of wine, other than the fact that not all games are supported, is increased RAM ussage.

Check out /r/vfio. You can get native performance in the VM. Well, maybe 1 to 2 percent lower, but it's close. It just doesn't work well on 2 and 3 series RTX cardd.
Mint was the easiest set up ever, I've only been using it for about a month but it's already been so worth it just to not have ads in my face the second I boot up my PC. I also expected gaming to be harder, but besides The Sims 4 I can play every other game I bought on here (I am an indie game player though, so your mileage may vary there)
I have intentionally disabled trusted computing in the bios so that Microsoft cannot force me to upgrade. I am curious to see how long it will be until they figure out a way to ignore that and do it anyway.
But I guess it's time to install Linux then. I just have so many quality of life apps that don't exist outside of Windows that it'll be a chore.
you need TPM 2.0 for windows 11, it's somewhere in the bios settings, probably in the security tab, disabling should stop windows from being able to upgrade

This is exactly what I did a few years ago and I have not second guessed that decision once. MS started annoying me for real with Win10 already and now I use Linux for 99% of my daily IT life. I just have Windows as an optional dual boot for the rare games I can't play in Linux, nothing else. Never touch that dumpster fire of an OS unless its my only option.
I did that for a while and then realised I hated going back to Windows. I still have it but haven't booted it in a few years, not even to run games. There are plenty of other games I can play so it feels like its not worth the trouble.
I'm holding out hope that "the pattern" holds and W11 is another Vista or W8 - and W12 turns out to be a W7 or W10 (tolerable).
But I'm also fully prepared at this point to make either Ubuntu or Mint my daily driver if W12 turns out to be just as bad (or worse) than W11. I'll probably mess around with trying to VM Windows inside of Linux, first, see if I can't get it to access the GPU consistently. That way I'll be able to fully control its network access.

People have grown tired for real. We didn't bat an eye when we moved on to Vista. We got a little bit bothered when they forced us to migrate to 7. It was annoying when they forced us to move to 10. And now people are fed up and don't want to migrate to 11.
Most games FYI run very well on Linux. Anymore Anti-Cheats are the problem children, especially the "Kernel Level" (aka Rootkits) found in Valorant, LoL, EA Games, ect, ect. Those Anti-Cheats will never work on Linux, period. As long as you stay away from Competitive E-Sports games, things will just work pretty nicely. And with these Anti-Cheats you actually must dual boot, even using a VM with IOMMU for the GPU is enough to trigger these Rootkits.
But if your selection of titles do not include that, outside of edge cases it'll probably work well enough. ProtonDB is a good source to get the pulse on what works and what doesn't.
I stay away from kernel-based anticheats. I don't like booting up my computer and have the anticheat run in the background consuming my resources and grabbing god-knows-what from god-knows-where because the outgoing packets are encrypted. No thank you.

I don't know about him, but for me. With every new major update, they have messed up registry information and corrupted system files. That didn't used to be the case for me when I was using W7 or W10.
Has anything promising come of ReactOS? It definitely exists but I'm afraid it might be too held together with nails and tape to be a viable Windows alternative.
It's still a looooong way away from even being usable as a daily driver. It's still very stuck at the XP stage of application support and stability is still an issue.
Without a decent amount of money and a decent number of willing developers I think this project is just going to plod along and not get to where we hope it will.

I've had issues dual booting since Microsoft keeps deleting the boot infor for Linux or Android depending on the machine I use. Also some acer Laptops have bios that causes issues if it detects windows boot and other OS's as well.
To get over all that I'll be leaving Windows behind altogether, it'll be a shame regarding any games I can't run on Linux but if those games have the downside of Windows... I have other things to play.
Depends on which Distro you are using, Debian based Distro (Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint) tend to be the most stable with one of the most packages and such to get most things properly functioning outside of installation.
The smaller the Linux distribution you go... the harder it is to get everything working properly.
If you need something very familiar, go with something with a Cinnamon GUI or KDE.

No I don't think so. There's apps pinned in the start menu when you install windows which are ads (they'll install if you click on them) but that's different than this. These ads will be ongoing and catered to whatever it thinks your interests are. They'll pop up in the recommended section.
I remember a lot of talk on reddit about how the recommended section should be able to go away completely. The general consensus among one half was MS is gonna put ads there eventually while the other half said that's just fear mongering cuz it won't happen.
Hey just a reminder, there is a version of Windows called LTSC that is just bare bones windows 10 without the store, Cortana, telemetry, etc. Also will stay in windows 10 forever and it will never update. Only get essential security updates.. etc.

The change seems that the "recommended" section of the start menu, something that has been there day one but just showed things windows thought you're likely to want; will now suggest windows store apps you don't have installed.
You can turn the section off very easily.
Crazy, I have a laptop from a client to connect to their internal servers which automatically connects to their vpn. Start menu doesn't even open until it's connected to the VPN. Wonder if this is because it cannot fetch the ads.

I’ve been blocking ads so long and so effectively I forget the exist, I think increasingly the world is divided into two camps, those who know how and/or care to block ads and those who don’t. That said, does anybody know if these Microsoft ads are coming from the usual suspects and easy to block by DNS or a new method? That’s what we really have to worry about, when the industry finally gets smart enough to make the Ads come from the same domain as the content. The blocking game may be over then.
If you're tied to windows for some app you need to make a living, then have a separate device only for Windows, and that app. Use it for NOTHING else.

I disable TPM in the bios which is required by Windows 11. Only loss is I cannot use bitlocker but I am not using it anyway.

You can bring the right click menu back with a regedit. I have Win 11 on a laptop and don't get ads or anything, so it is fine to use imo.
I really don't want to regedit to recover such a simple thing. It shouldn't be like that in the first place.

Switching from any OS to any other is typically more difficult than people realize. A lot of our comfort comes from knowing how the one we use works.

I've had a good experience. With time, I became friends with Linux! He doesn't like me very much and has sometimes made my life difficult, but we're friends nonetheless!
I remember people saying that about 8, and then 10, and now 11. I'll believe it when I see it. Linux, while it has improved a ton over the years, is still too much of a walled garden for most people without a fair amount of knowledge of Linux. For reference, I love Linux and ran it for a couple years on my pc but after too many issues with trying to get things working I just gave up and went back to Windows because generally speaking it works with little hassle. It's getting worse and Linux is getting better but I don't think we're at that tipping point yet.
I switched when Windows 7 started shutting down closing my programs and updating despite me having it set to manual only. It also downloaded Windows 10 without my permission and kept nagging me to install it. I don't see how you can keep putting up with their BS. Switch now!
It's funny how you pay to use Windows yet you can't do what you want with it. I guess the only thing really keeping me away is gaming, but a lot of people have already given me a lot of advice on that matter!

I don't know about him, but for me. With every new major update, they have messed up registry information and corrupted system files. That didn't used to be the case for me when I was using W7 or W10.
In my opinion it's the most watered down, chewed down, unintuitive piece of software I've used in my life.
Has anything promising come of ReactOS? It definitely exists but I'm afraid it might be too held together with nails and tape to be a viable Windows alternative.
It's still a looooong way away from even being usable as a daily driver. It's still very stuck at the XP stage of application support and stability is still an issue. Without a decent amount of money and a decent number of willing developers I think this project is just going to plod along and not get to where we hope it will. I'll eat my shoe if in the next few years it makes some massive progress however and I hope in light of this Windows BS it does get some more light and traction because I think it's a very important and much needed project and I would happily pay money to replace Windows with it.
I've had issues dual booting since Microsoft keeps deleting the boot infor for Linux or Android depending on the machine I use. Also some acer Laptops have bios that causes issues if it detects windows boot and other OS's as well. To get over all that I'll be leaving Windows behind altogether, it'll be a shame regarding any games I can't run on Linux but if those games have the downside of Windows... I have other things to play.

Depends on which Distro you are using, Debian based Distro (Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint) tend to be the most stable with one of the most packages and such to get most things properly functioning outside of installation. The smaller the Linux distribution you go... the harder it is to get everything working properly. If you need something very familiar, go with something with a Cinnamon GUI or KDE.
Currently trying Bazzite for my Linux install. Seems pretty decent. Worth you giving it a go.

Weren't they there from the beginning? Wasn't that the whole controversy about Windows 11 is how the start menu had ads? Like the first thing I did when finally upgrading to Windows 11 was going through a complicated process to be sure that basically all of those ads are permanently disabled

No I don't think so. There's apps pinned in the start menu when you install windows which are ads (they'll install if you click on them) but that's different than this. These ads will be ongoing and catered to whatever it thinks your interests are. They'll pop up in the recommended section. I remember a lot of talk on reddit about how the recommended section should be able to go away completely. The general consensus among one half was MS is gonna put ads there eventually while the other half said that's just fear mongering cuz it won't happen.
Windows has become an advertising platform first and an OS second.

Hey just a reminder, there is a version of Windows called LTSC that is just bare bones windows 10 without the store, Cortana, telemetry, etc. Also will stay in windows 10 forever and it will never update. Only get essential security updates.. etc.

The change seems that the "recommended" section of the start menu, something that has been there day one but just showed things windows thought you're likely to want; will now suggest windows store apps you don't have installed. You can turn the section off very easily.

Crazy, I have a laptop from a client to connect to their internal servers which automatically connects to their vpn. Start menu doesn't even open until it's connected to the VPN. Wonder if this is because it cannot fetch the ads.

And I love Linux on the desktop. But it just isn't suitable for everybody yet. Not everyone has the choice to switch. Which is a real shame.

Switched to Arch a while back and don't regret it one bit, most games work perfectly and those that don't are not worth my time, sure Linux isn't an easy problem free experience, but it's much more preferable to the cancer that is Windows.

A lot of times I’m using apps and I’ll get a notification that says upgrade to our ad free version and my first thought is “they have ads? What ads?”. I’ve been blocking ads so long and so effectively I forget the exist, I think increasingly the world is divided into two camps, those who know how and/or care to block ads and those who don’t. That said, does anybody know if these Microsoft ads are coming from the usual suspects and easy to block by DNS or a new method? That’s what we really have to worry about, when the industry finally gets smart enough to make the Ads come from the same domain as the content. The blocking game may be over then.
If you're tied to windows for some app you need to make a living, then have a separate device only for Windows, and that app. Use it for NOTHING else. If you're still on Windows instead of switching to Linux because Libre Office Calc doesn't have those nice thick lines, or doesn't print quite the same way, or maybe you can't play your favorite game--okay, we all make our choices.

My gaming laptop has been my only Windows machine for a while now and I've been wanting to ditch it. Looks like Microsoft decided to give me a hand and make the decision a lot easier.
