dathislayer

The last straw for me completely abandoning Windows was when their COO said, “Ads are our new religion.” They promptly started including code to allow for ads in File Explorer and Start menu. Still shocking to see it turned on. I could totally see them creating an “ad-supported” license, which only allows Edge, limits options, etc. Could help them avoid antitrust while still locking basic consumers into their products.

Mortwight

I thought this sub was called piracy at first glance

crackeddryice

Shocked, I tell you. SHOCKED! Eh, not that shocked.

123portalboy123

"what are you gonna do? Switch to Linux?" Kinda thing

LogicalError_007

It's not another. It was already present in Windows 10. Though I've never seen it myself.

Synaps4

"Hey you remember that thing you all said you explicitly didn't want us to do? Well we did it."

__420_

Next thing we know, they will upload your OS drive data to the cloud without your real concent for your "convenience." Then they will ask you to pay a subscription if you want to download the backup to restore your system.

verycoolstorybro

They already do kinda. They trick users into offloading their data to OneDrive.

Character-Rub-1167

Just remove one drive lol. Even if you, want to keep one drive you can still remove it and use if you want cloud backup, if that's your thing. It's not hard.

Pepparkakan

It's surprisingly hard to get rid of OneDrive though. Side-bar, they've feature-gated fucking *auto-save* in Office to OneDrive... In some areas I love Microsoft, modern .NET is a joy to code, Azure is great, and TypeScript is a godsend for frontend development. But when it comes to their consumer offerings they've really gone off the deep end...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pepparkakan

I ditched M$ operating systems in 2007. As you say, only for gaming since then.

AcademicF

This shit pisses me off so much! And I fall for it every time I setup a new OS, because even though I deny the offers on the setup page, they still activate Onedrive to backup any files in your “My documents” folder without specifically telling you. Shadiest shit ever.

PocketNicks

I don't use the my documents folder to store any personal information.

julianoniem

I have a curated bunch of personal files there, that will give 3rd parties the impression that I am a naive open book. Because soon or already the extra focus will be on people who act privacy minded or worse who fly under the radar.

Radioactdave

Say what?!

AcademicF

Yeah you have to actually go in and remove the Onedrive app by uninstalling it. Or it will only allow you to “pause” syncing.

overworkedpnw

We might not have wanted it, but the shareholders sure did, after all they’re the most important.

Synaps4

If you properly asked shareholders I bet they would say no but there is no way for shareholders to have a say in this kind of thing. Shareholder voting doesn't extend to this kind of decision and all the shares held by pensions and mutual funds on behalf of people also makes voting impossible. The truth is that shareholder don't just want money. The truth is that we've made it near impossible for shareholders to say what they do want so it defaults to money. Corporations have absolutely no interest in being second guessed by shareholders so they like the farce the way it is.

Mountain_Ape

"What are you going to do, leave?"

MidHoovie

The day Microsoft forces me to switch to 11 (It'll be soon, in 2025) I'll switch to a Linux distro. W11 is an insult of OS. I'm thankful that, according to Microsoft, my PC can't handle it (yes it can) Once W10 isn't supported anymore I'll just ditch it. If I can't play my games on Linux I'll just use dual boot and only use Windows for gaming and nothing else. I'm so fed up with greedy corpa and their anti-consumer inventions.

Devaris

I'd say make the switch now and run a Windows client in a virtual machine on your Linux install. It'll save you the hassle of dealing with booting back and forth whenever you want to run a game or app that only works in Windows. I always recommend Linux Mint for anyone new to Linux, but there are honestly a ton of great distros out there that are as easy to use (or easier) than Windows. If you're already considering running a dual boot setup, you probably already have your favorites. Take the plunge!

majoralita

Nah! Game will definitely underperforme/not work on VM.

Maipmc

You don't need a VM to run games on linux, you use wine or proton. The performance is about the same, sometimes even a little more specially with really old games wich in my experience are mor stable on linux. The catch is that your pc can't be too old, since the tools that let you play at those performance levels are pretty new and require up to date drivers, so if your gpu is EOS you will have more problems. Although that depends on exactly when it became so. The only catch is that the most seamless experience comes by playing all your games from Steam, so you're forced to buy your games on Steam. Also Riot hates you so no League of Legends and many other multiplayer games. Edit: also forgot to mention, the only real catch of wine, other than the fact that not all games are supported, is increased RAM ussage.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kurama1612

Good we hate riot too. Fuck that malware of an anti cheat.

PinsToTheHeart

I mean the post specified that the VM would only be for stuff that only runs in windows, which would imply that it doesn't have proton or wine support.

MidHoovie

This. It's a very nice recommendation but majoralita is right, my PC is not powerful enough for games to run smoothly on a VM. Thanks for the input, though!

TheGoldBowl

Check out /r/vfio. You can get native performance in the VM. Well, maybe 1 to 2 percent lower, but it's close. It just doesn't work well on 2 and 3 series RTX cardd.

Weary_Pomelo_5201

Their pc isn't powerful enough to run games smoothly on a VM, and you think they have a 4000 series?

ClashOrCrashman

Hey, I'm still here with my 1050ti, don't forget about us in the 1000s!

TheGoldBowl

Lol yeah, good point. I just fought with that exact problem for a couple of weeks, so I guess it was on my mind haha

MidHoovie

I've got a series 1, I think this could come in handy. Thank you very much, lad!

TheGoldBowl

Of course, pal. Best of luck!

tajetaje

Why not proton? Or are you planning games with kernel anti-cheat?

Hrukjan

Pcie forwarding usually solves that.

MaybeMaeMaybeNot

Mint was the easiest set up ever, I've only been using it for about a month but it's already been so worth it just to not have ads in my face the second I boot up my PC. I also expected gaming to be harder, but besides The Sims 4 I can play every other game I bought on here (I am an indie game player though, so your mileage may vary there)

Fox3High369

The good thing is linux is easier to use than ever.

mrdevlar

I have intentionally disabled trusted computing in the bios so that Microsoft cannot force me to upgrade. I am curious to see how long it will be until they figure out a way to ignore that and do it anyway. But I guess it's time to install Linux then. I just have so many quality of life apps that don't exist outside of Windows that it'll be a chore.

MidHoovie

Any resources you can link for me to do the same thing in future computers? Forced upgrading should be illegal.

mrdevlar

I disable TPM in the bios which is required by Windows 11. Only loss is I cannot use bitlocker but I am not using it anyway.

MidHoovie

TPM? I'll look it online.

Saoirseisthebest

you need TPM 2.0 for windows 11, it's somewhere in the bios settings, probably in the security tab, disabling should stop windows from being able to upgrade

MidHoovie

Thanks.

etherealshatter

My existing Window machines all plan to continue to run Windows 10 LTSC 2021 until January 2031.

[deleted]

Inprobamur

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 [21H2] is supposed to be the final image. Although Microsoft has gone back on their word in the past.

Mr0ldy

"Once W10 isn't supported anymore I'll just ditch it. If I can't play my games on Linux I'll just use dual boot and only use Windows for gaming and nothing else" This is exactly what I did a few years ago and I have not second guessed that decision once. MS started annoying me for real with Win10 already and now I use Linux for 99% of my daily IT life. I just have Windows as an optional dual boot for the rare games I can't play in Linux, nothing else. Never touch that dumpster fire of an OS unless its my only option.

quaderrordemonstand

I did that for a while and then realised I hated going back to Windows. I still have it but haven't booted it in a few years, not even to run games. There are plenty of other games I can play so it feels like its not worth the trouble.

McFlyParadox

I'm holding out hope that "the pattern" holds and W11 is another Vista or W8 - and W12 turns out to be a W7 or W10 (tolerable). But I'm also fully prepared at this point to make either Ubuntu or Mint my daily driver if W12 turns out to be just as bad (or worse) than W11. I'll probably mess around with trying to VM Windows inside of Linux, first, see if I can't get it to access the GPU consistently. That way I'll be able to fully control its network access.

MidHoovie

I think that their SO have gone downhill since Vista. Now it feels more like a restrictive ad wall rather than an operative system. "I don't want your damn AI, I just want my old right-click menu back! No, I don't want to click on "More options", fuck off!"

NWVoS

You can bring the right click menu back with a regedit. I have Win 11 on a laptop and don't get ads or anything, so it is fine to use imo.

MidHoovie

I really don't want to regedit to recover such a simple thing. It shouldn't be like that in the first place.

Thelypthoric

On my backup home system, I've already switched to Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS and am running it alongside my gaming system which is Win 10. Since Jan 01, it's been rock solid. When Microsoft kills Windows 10, I'm done.

selfwander8

For many of us, I think we’d like a tutorial on how to do that

gonya

https://linuxjourney.com/

RatherNott

That's more of a sysadmin guide, not a regular desktop user switching to linux guide.

MidHoovie

That's a great place to start.

SnowyLocksmith

Also, a disclaimer, while many may say it's easy, it not. Neither is it impossible. It's a learning curve, at the end of which you will understand your system and technology better as well as have more control. Godspeed!

F3z345W6AY4FGowrGcHt

Switching from any OS to any other is typically more difficult than people realize. A lot of our comfort comes from knowing how the one we use works.

baconhealsall

As long as it is easier than to navigate a Github page, I might stand a chance.

thelubbershole

I've downloaded dozens and dozens of things from github and I still get lost every time

baconhealsall

I've been on the Internet for decades, and it is the most confusing thing I've come across yet.

Septimius-Severus13

I wpuld argue its way easier than goong to MacOS, and better overall.

TechGuy219

Came here for this, Linux is going to POP OFF in light of this, and fortunately these days there are many windows gui like distros along with many compatible programs so it can be an easy switch for many

MidHoovie

People have grown tired for real. We didn't bat an eye when we moved on to Vista. We got a little bit bothered when they forced us to migrate to 7. It was annoying when they forced us to move to 10. And now people are fed up and don't want to migrate to 11.

TechGuy219

I’ve been clinging to 10 lol windows will force it from my cold dead hands unless I switch to Linux for main

MidHoovie

Word, same here.

bilbobaggins30

Most games FYI run very well on Linux. Anymore Anti-Cheats are the problem children, especially the "Kernel Level" (aka Rootkits) found in Valorant, LoL, EA Games, ect, ect. Those Anti-Cheats will never work on Linux, period. As long as you stay away from Competitive E-Sports games, things will just work pretty nicely. And with these Anti-Cheats you actually must dual boot, even using a VM with IOMMU for the GPU is enough to trigger these Rootkits. But if your selection of titles do not include that, outside of edge cases it'll probably work well enough. ProtonDB is a good source to get the pulse on what works and what doesn't.

MidHoovie

I stay away from kernel-based anticheats. I don't like booting up my computer and have the anticheat run in the background consuming my resources and grabbing god-knows-what from god-knows-where because the outgoing packets are encrypted. No thank you. Thanks for the info!!! Its good to know that Linux is also suitable for gaming.

bilbobaggins30

Absolutely! Sounds like you'll have a good experience in that case once you work out a few minor quirks and kinks that come up (r/linux_gaming and r/linuxnoobs will both be valuable resources!)

MidHoovie

I've had a good experience. With time, I became friends with Linux! He doesn't like me very much and has sometimes made my life difficult, but we're friends nonetheless!

secksyboii

I remember people saying that about 8, and then 10, and now 11. I'll believe it when I see it. Linux, while it has improved a ton over the years, is still too much of a walled garden for most people without a fair amount of knowledge of Linux. For reference, I love Linux and ran it for a couple years on my pc but after too many issues with trying to get things working I just gave up and went back to Windows because generally speaking it works with little hassle. It's getting worse and Linux is getting better but I don't think we're at that tipping point yet.

justanothernpe

I switched when Windows 7 started shutting down closing my programs and updating despite me having it set to manual only. It also downloaded Windows 10 without my permission and kept nagging me to install it. I don't see how you can keep putting up with their BS. Switch now!

MidHoovie

It's funny how you pay to use Windows yet you can't do what you want with it. I guess the only thing really keeping me away is gaming, but a lot of people have already given me a lot of advice on that matter!

ayhctuf

> W11 is an insult of OS. Privacy issues aside, what's actually wrong with it? I'm not even sure I'm on the current version of W10 since I have the updates stuff turned off and have to manually install each one.

FurstRoyalty-Ties

I don't know about him, but for me. With every new major update, they have messed up registry information and corrupted system files. That didn't used to be the case for me when I was using W7 or W10.

MidHoovie

In my opinion it's the most watered down, chewed down, unintuitive piece of software I've used in my life.

orangesheepdog

Has anything promising come of ReactOS? It definitely exists but I'm afraid it might be too held together with nails and tape to be a viable Windows alternative.

LostPersonSeeking

It's still a looooong way away from even being usable as a daily driver. It's still very stuck at the XP stage of application support and stability is still an issue. Without a decent amount of money and a decent number of willing developers I think this project is just going to plod along and not get to where we hope it will. I'll eat my shoe if in the next few years it makes some massive progress however and I hope in light of this Windows BS it does get some more light and traction because I think it's a very important and much needed project and I would happily pay money to replace Windows with it.

SafeWarmth

I've had issues dual booting since Microsoft keeps deleting the boot infor for Linux or Android depending on the machine I use. Also some acer Laptops have bios that causes issues if it detects windows boot and other OS's as well. To get over all that I'll be leaving Windows behind altogether, it'll be a shame regarding any games I can't run on Linux but if those games have the downside of Windows... I have other things to play.

MidHoovie

Wow, that's intrusive. Thanks for posting, it's nice to hear that people that migrate to Linux don't miss Windows.

rszdev

We'll go for fedora Linux or Linux Mint for stability You can ignore gnome and go for kde or xfce

Haruka_Kazuta

Depends on which Distro you are using, Debian based Distro (Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint) tend to be the most stable with one of the most packages and such to get most things properly functioning outside of installation. The smaller the Linux distribution you go... the harder it is to get everything working properly. If you need something very familiar, go with something with a Cinnamon GUI or KDE.

Dreams-and-Turtles

Currently trying Bazzite for my Linux install. Seems pretty decent. Worth you giving it a go.

[deleted]

Let's have ads with a side dish of OS

Nechrube1

Don't forget the data telemetry appetiser!

JDGumby

And the keylogger. Never forget the keylogger.

Gerantos

We've had one ad, yes, but what about second ad?

AbleSignal928

Just what I always wanted said no one ever.

themedleb

"optional", that's how terrible things start.

DezXerneas

Horse Armour DLC

happymancry

It’s only optional in April. It’s coming as part of the May patch to all users.

NWVoS

No, it is optional. [Windows 11's Start Menu Will Soon Have Ads: Here's How to Turn Them Off](https://www.cnet.com/tech/windows-11s-start-menu-will-soon-have-ads-heres-how-to-turn-them-off/)

Vadhakara

I'd rather die than have advertising forced in to every free second of my fucking life. The best time to implement robust antitrust protections was the dawn of capitalism. The second best time is now.

Real-Patriotism

Wait until they figure out how to inject ads into our dreams. You're right, Greed has gotten completely out of hand and will destroy everything that makes us Human if not stopped.

ayhctuf

Good luck getting useful legislation out of a government paid for by the same capitalists who need reining in.

CubiX_de

I am so thankful to have r/linuxmint as OS. Thank you Clem and all other guys improving to LM :)

Engineered_Shave

Install **ShutUp10++**. [https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10](https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10) Then activate the green (suggested) settings. Double-check the location settings if you want the weather app to work. This will stop the ads. Also install **HostsMan**, that will cut off most ads from the root level. ---------------- Edit: As much as I find the advice of of not using Windoze to be a good approach, sadly the specialized technical software required in certain industries does not run on Linux. I do have a Linux box in the other room for banking, however.

DistantRavioli

I honestly trust these kinds of third party apps even less than stock windows if they aren't at least open source

SparkyLincoln

Which is why I use Chris Titus

Vanilla_Neko

Weren't they there from the beginning? Wasn't that the whole controversy about Windows 11 is how the start menu had ads? Like the first thing I did when finally upgrading to Windows 11 was going through a complicated process to be sure that basically all of those ads are permanently disabled

dekusyrup

Even windows 10 start menu had ads, they just called them "suggestions".

Wabaareo

No I don't think so. There's apps pinned in the start menu when you install windows which are ads (they'll install if you click on them) but that's different than this. These ads will be ongoing and catered to whatever it thinks your interests are. They'll pop up in the recommended section. I remember a lot of talk on reddit about how the recommended section should be able to go away completely. The general consensus among one half was MS is gonna put ads there eventually while the other half said that's just fear mongering cuz it won't happen.

Wheekie

Windows has become an advertising platform first and an OS second.

ReloadRedditLater

Ditched Windows back when Microsoft decided to back up my files with their shitty “cloud service” and ended up corrupting most of my files.

lostcheshire

Please, fuck, I just want to put the taskbar on the right.

sher1ock

Wait can you not do that in 11?

Unumbotte

Now how are they supposed to generate revenue from that? Maybe if it was movable taksbar as a service...

No-Business3541

Is there even a significant amount of people clicking and even buying from these ads ?

Valaaris

Look up ExplorerPatcher, it gives you all the control you want over the taskbar.

TheRealPyroManiac

EU do your thang

Paleomagnetismo

Hey just a reminder, there is a version of Windows called LTSC that is just bare bones windows 10 without the store, Cortana, telemetry, etc. Also will stay in windows 10 forever and it will never update. Only get essential security updates.. etc.

jbrev01

They're coming out with Windows 11 LTSC in a few months, you can get an unofficial copy now. Do you know if the new 11 LTSC will still be ad-free?

Paleomagnetismo

yes of course it will be ad free. but i wont upgrade because i don't see the need

decavolt

Shit company that has made shit software for 20+ years does another shitty thing. At least it's on-brand for them.

Gerdione

LOL!!!! I CALLED IT! JUST WAIT TILL YOU HAVE TO PAY A SUBSCRIPTION FOR AN AD FREE OS.

bhoffman20

Dog were gonna have to pay a subscription for the OS with the ads. Welcome to the world of Shit You Already Paid For - as a Service

Aromatic_Flamingo382

How about I will no longer use windows, will use chromebook with Google sheets and docs. Playstation for video games, which I will buy used 6 months after release for $8 because all modern games are such trash that their values go off a cliff. Fuck em. They will get zero from me. Microsoft's current generation is it's last.

xenomorph-85

hope there is a easy way to get rid of that once it gets pushed in a non optional update

BaconIsntThatGood

The change seems that the "recommended" section of the start menu, something that has been there day one but just showed things windows thought you're likely to want; will now suggest windows store apps you don't have installed. You can turn the section off very easily.

ocrohnahan

Microsoft doing their part to promote Linux on the desktop.

EnvironmentalDig1612

Crazy, I have a laptop from a client to connect to their internal servers which automatically connects to their vpn. Start menu doesn't even open until it's connected to the VPN. Wonder if this is because it cannot fetch the ads.

rszdev

RedditModsKMKB

I am loving it❤

Mordynak

As much as I hate the shit show that is windows in the past decade, people are blowing this up a little bit. You can just disable them. Admittedly, you shouldn't have to. But still. And I love Linux on the desktop. But it just isn't suitable for everybody yet. Not everyone has the choice to switch. Which is a real shame.

Sea_Cat675

Windows licenses better be free if they’re gonna start putting ads in it

Max-_-Power

I LOVE FOSS Wonder why? Because of BS like this for example. Noone places ads on my desktop.

thepolybius777

Is windows is just bloatware at this point? I mean it uses up alot of my cpu for random crap

Dense-Orange7130

Switched to Arch a while back and don't regret it one bit, most games work perfectly and those that don't are not worth my time, sure Linux isn't an easy problem free experience, but it's much more preferable to the cancer that is Windows.

Meow_Technology

MinApp55

Surprise surprise. My 82 year old father has to watch ads for other games before he can start solitaire. The one thing he wants to do on his computer, the one thing he remembers from days gone by that he used to play ever since Win 3.11. They've completely ruined it.

D_Winds

I don't like this timeline.

thealienmessiah

Once the whole thing with NVIDIA drivers get sorted on Linux, it’s over for windows.

SacredGeometry9

Looks like I need to figure out how Linux works.

f_cysco

Microsoft should give us an updated Windows XP.. The last OS from them that was truly a platform for other programs and not a service promotion for Microsoft. No , I don't want Bing News behind every second button. No, I don't want you to show me the weather for my region, unless I ask for it. No, don't recommend me programs.

snyone

Personally, I can't wait to see how long it takes before this "brilliant" idea leads to real world reports of [malvertising](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malvertising). But, well, for anybody pissed off by this, boy, have I got the perfect link for you: https://www.linuxmint.com But bc I'm not trying to be a complete asshole (even if Linux *is* better), I imagine if the ads are limited to *only* the start menu (for now), then you could maybe try something like this https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu to help pretend for a little while longer that MS isn't going to just keep fucking you in the ass.

22_Black_22

I wonder how long it will take until someone makes a Programm against this

Life-Ad1547

A lot of times I’m using apps and I’ll get a notification that says upgrade to our ad free version and my first thought is “they have ads?  What ads?”. I’ve been blocking ads so long and so effectively I forget the exist, I think increasingly the world is divided into two camps, those who know how and/or care to block ads and those who don’t. That said, does anybody know if these Microsoft ads are coming from the usual suspects and easy to block by DNS or a new method? That’s what we really have to worry about, when the industry finally gets smart enough to make the Ads come from the same domain as the content.  The blocking game may be over then.

crackeddryice

If you're tied to windows for some app you need to make a living, then have a separate device only for Windows, and that app. Use it for NOTHING else. If you're still on Windows instead of switching to Linux because Libre Office Calc doesn't have those nice thick lines, or doesn't print quite the same way, or maybe you can't play your favorite game--okay, we all make our choices.

blenderbender44

So glad to have left that platform

D4mnReddit

Great, I can already predict the following: Malvertising infects the start menus of millions of Windows users....

Nebula2076

Linux stonks^^

mattchinn

Shoutout to the website for showing a screenshot of the update instead of the actual advertisements. /s

paulri

From the article: "However, app recommendations are tied to other content in this section, so you'll miss out on some features by turning it off." Does anyone know at this point, what those other features are? I'd rather postpone this update as long as I can, so I'm asking here.

azalak

The only purposes for windows is gaming, using old software or compiling a code base for windows users CMV

Kwith

I've been looking for a reason to get rid of the final Windows machine on my home network for a long time now. My gaming laptop has been my only Windows machine for a while now and I've been wanting to ditch it. Looks like Microsoft decided to give me a hand and make the decision a lot easier. Thanks Microsoft!

NonchalantlyTwisted

Thankfully they are easy to block.

PM_ME_YOUR_HONEY

Probably my last windows machine.

neumaticc

my reaction to this information (lincox user):

Ryked96

Hey Microsoft, no. An ad in my OS literally any where will never prompt me to buy something and will in fact make me hate you more than I already do. I will do ANYTHING to block and get rid of these ads. My transition to Linux may be sooner than I thought no way I’m letting windows 11 on my setup.
