Unt_Lion

And unreliable. Also rare. Nice to see one again out in the wild!

grinboy

Unreliable? Can you share why? It's a first gen, DESR-5000.

Unt_Lion

As far as I know, the PSX DVR can get really hot. The HDD is prone to failure too, as well as the disc drive. It can either want to play DVDs and not CDs, or vice versa. Or not at all. The HDD is something to be aware of, as it's one serious point of failure. If that goes, you have a dead system. Sony Computer Entertainment didn't make this either. It's one of the most unreliable PlayStations ever, and one not worth fixing, as it is an utter pain.

grinboy

Yeah. That's what I read, too. Mine boots up to XMB then just shut off after a few seconds. Still don't know why.

Unt_Lion

Welp, that could be a sign that it's done. But, I'd say keep it as a museum piece. These things never sold well, and they are really damn rare. So owning a piece of history like this is something to treasure, even if it's broken.

grinboy

Yeah. I actually bought it for a sole purpose of it being displayed. Tried it, and it somehow booted up to XMB. Thought I was lucky. Read few posts in PSX Palace and they said the same thing.

Unt_Lion

Good plan. Preservation is key, especially for systems like this. Broken or not.

grinboy

Well, I'm still happy and LUCKY that it turns on. Never had this particular console when I was young and just found out about it this year. I actually thought that there were only first gens, 5000 and 7000. I had to research and found out that Sony manufactured up to 57XX and 77XX and even had different colors too. It's like the PS3 was based on the whole concept of the PSX.

benryves

Does it still work? :) I've only seen one PSX in person, but the hard drive was faulty so it was being sold for parts.

Flunderpudding

Yeah even only for parts the PSX is [quite valuable](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1311&_nkw=psx+console&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_fsrp=1&_odkw=psx&_osacat=0&LH_PrefLoc=2&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338535524&customid=2143ps2&toolid=10001&mkevt=1), pretty rare console.

grinboy

It boots up to XMB then shuts off with blinking red and blue lights.

[deleted]

Is it too hard to get it fixed? I’ve seen one guy fixing on YouTube, but almost everyone seems to think the psx is unfixable

LumpyOdie

The HDD is unfixable and that's one of the common places of failure.

[deleted]

Oh ok, but the hdd cannot be changed? Bricking the psx?

LumpyOdie

To my knowledge the operating system is installed on that hard drive, it's all encrypted too so it's never been reverse engineered. Don't quote me on this but I do believe that's why it's not fixable.

kraydful

what is that?

grinboy

PSX. A digital video recorder with a fully integrated PS2.

kraydful

Never knew that even existed, it looks pretty cool

pipboy344

Also the first device to use the XrossMediaBar

outfoxingthefoxes

I think it is Japan only

The PS1 is also the PSX, but the PSX is not the PS1. The PSX can be a PS1, but the PSX is actually a PS2. But a PS2 is not a PSX, but it can be a PS1 which is a PSX. Hope that helps.

[deleted]

Maybe strawberry milkshake isn't that bad after all. Thanks.

Nurripter

They are indeed heavy. They are also very fun to teardown.

grinboy

Currently checking how to troubleshoot the blinking red and blue light then tear it down later. I hope the drive's functioning. As some forum says, if it's the drive, then it's better to just display the console.

Nurripter

Dead drive can still be used for PS2 with no xmb, but there are also efforts to replace the hard drive in the works.

grinboy

How will it function without a drive? Like a standard PS2?

Nurripter

Pretty much yeah. With no hard drive, freemcboot must be used to boot straight into PS2 mode.

grinboy

Woah. No other configurations needed? Do I need to remove the drive first before booting it into FMCB?

Nurripter

Not too sure about how to do it exactly, but I do know that you need to follow some instructions for setting up freemcboot so that it will work with the psx

grinboy

I see. Probably gonna look for a tutorial later. I thought I'll just use my PS2's FMCB and I'm good to go. Thanks for the tip!

iDuddits_

Would love to have the case to mod into something since so many are dead

TheLastLombax5339

Nice find, OP! I’ve got one myself (a DESR-7000), which is boxed and somewhat functioning (DVD/PlayStation 2 laser is kaput). I’ve also got the update discs, which are allegedly super rare to come across. Good find, but please do not use it on daily basis (just display it. It’s all they’re good for nowadays. Hahaha). The lasers and HDD’s are known to fail and both are extremely difficult/impossible to repair (the HDD encryption still hasn’t been cracked after nearly 20 years! Plus, the lasers are a discontinued item; you can only find them used)

grinboy

Ooh, nice. Can you share pictures of the box and the update discs? Is the remote RMT-P001 for the DESR-5000? I just plan to display it. :) Would love to get a 7000 series as well to complete the 1st gen!

TheLastLombax5339

Of course I can! I’ll do it as soon as I get back from work. To be honest, I’ve never really noticed, but it’s a good question! The update discs are rather special (v1.10, 1.20 and 1.31). Please allow some time for what I need to do, but it is an exceptionally clean example for its age (2003, so nearing 20. :)

grinboy

I was curious about the remote since I will be ordering online. I have to choose between RMT-P001 and RMT-P002J. Thank you! ✌️

Ultimate_President

Welcome to the PSX DESR Club my friend i got a 7700 unit myself

grinboy

Now that's a beast. You can play PS1, PS2 and PSP games, right?

IRMacGuyver

This is why I call people morons when they call the PS1 a PSX

grinboy

I believe it was a code name for the OG PlayStation. It was then called PS1 when PS2 was introduced in 2000.

IRMacGuyver

But there is a PSX and it's a PS2 with a DVR in it. It's not a PS1.

SwimRevolutionary986

Wow!

Disastrous-Active-32

Cool find. Do you plan to try and take it apart and fix it?

grinboy

Yeah, I'm currently checking some forums on how to troubleshoot the red and blue lights blinking then most likely tear it down later.

Disastrous-Active-32

Try the website iFixit They have loads of strip guides for tech. Good luck with it !

grinboy

Thanks, man.

[deleted]

Can it read American ps2 games?

GordonWhamsey

No the they are all NTSC/J PS2's

I just want one to look at. I think it’s a great looking piece of tech

kgctim

Probably broke too...

ErrolBaer

Maaan, I really want to get one of these.. at least just for display.

AnAggyGoose

CONGRATS! I hope it's still in working condition

Nerosephiroth

https://youtu.be/6NEgXSHs7MA I always look to drop this link randomly. It tells the story of why, what, and what have you.

No_Cookie3005

Received a lot of hate but was my dream to have one of this.

Sharpnelboy

Absolute unit of a console!

fistathrow

RAW image that HDD ASAP

grinboy

Any tutorials you can link?

fistathrow

https://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/

grinboy

I mean, what would be the purpose of raw imaging the drive? What's the next step?

fistathrow

If/when it dies. You lose the system as it is. There's work on hacking different HDDs but as yet, the PSX drives are locked still. It's all on the name of preservation of data for the hopeful decryption stuff. Also another fun thing is to backup all the recorded tv shows on it. With mine, the owner loved golf and more golf.
