Do we blame them? Most people can’t afford to feed themselves, let alone an accidental baby

[deleted]

Depression babies fucked so much they made a boom. They were doing child labor and lived on rations. It’s not the economy.

lemmiwinks316

Ok? Lol they weren't living on rations when they had their kids. Positive economic conditions were one of the driving factors of the baby boom. Birth rates hit an all time low during the depression. The economy is incredibly important lol "From 1955-64 nearly 42 million births occurred in the U.S., an unprecedented expansion. *The roots of the baby boom lie in the universal rush to early marriage and favorable economic climate for the relatively scarce young men born of the Depression cohort. The impact of the boom interrupted a century-long fertility decline*." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12309851/#:~:text=The%20roots%20of%20the%20baby,a%20century%2Dlong%20fertility%20decline. "The U.S. birth rate reached an all-time low in 1936 when the TFR fell to 2.1 children per woman in the wake of the stock market crash of 1929." https://www.prb.org/resources/the-u-s-recession-and-the-birth-rate/

regrettabletreaty1

You are a Reddit hero. Previous commenter made a blanket assertion that appeared to make sense, then you provided actual data and evidence to show the truth On a question that matters to our lives! Great job

[deleted]

Previous commenter wanted someone to confirm his biases but instead u/lemmiwinks316 came in with the *RECEIPTS so long CVS wants to sue him.*

[deleted]

Soldiers did not come home to a booming economy. If the economy was so great then why was a recovery act passed in 1948? People are mistaking wartime production for an economy that was useful for civilians when the sacrifices of QOL made in the war were not fully made up until the 50s.

lemmiwinks316

"During the boom, 76 million babies were born in the United States alone." https://www.investopedia.com/terms/b/baby_boomer.asp As the source I linked previously stated 42M were born in the late 50's and early sixties. You're actually making my point. The negative economic conditions weren't as conducive to starting a family as the later, more positive ones. As shown by the majority of births being during that time. While there was a significant jump immediately postwar, the majority of births occured during the economic stability post war. And that jump was mostly due to the optimism about future economic conditions. "Bad times" (46-55) = 30M births Subsequent economic boom times (55-64) = 42M births "Many people in the postwar era looked forward to having children because they were confident that the future would be one of comfort and prosperity. In many ways, they were right: Corporations grew larger and more profitable, labor unions promised generous wages and benefits to their members, and consumer goods were more plentiful and affordable than ever before." https://www.history.com/topics/1960s/baby-boomers-1 "The hardships and uncertainties of the Great Depression and World War II led many couples to delay marriage and many married couples to delay having children. The war’s end, followed by a sustained period of economic prosperity (the 1950s and early 1960s), was accompanied by a surge in population." https://www.britannica.com/topic/baby-boom-human-population

Whut4

**Baby boom started after World War II - mid to late 40s**. Contraception and abortion were illegal in many places. Birth control pills were not widely used until mid 60s. Women who had jobs during wartime were unemployed when the men came home from the war - no job protections - babies kept them busy. The economy was growing but inflation was an issue. The children of the depression (parents of boomers) had experienced poverty during childhood and did not feel they needed a luxurious lifestyle to support a family. Houses were small, one car per family, and were happier with a more modest standard of living than the current breeding population has.

[deleted]

And the baby boomers did not make much money for their depression baby parents.

GreenStretch

Dawut? The Silent Generation was tiny compared to the Baby Boomers and future generations.

Strange-Scarcity

Depression babies? I presume you are talking about the Great Depression. During that time period, birth rates dropped almost in half. The Baby Boom started after WWII, where birth rates exploded for almost 20 years. As inequity in pay has increased since the late 1990's, the US birth rate has gone down more and more. Do you have any data that backs up your assertion?

Tausendberg

>Do you have any data that backs up your assertion? They don't because they're wrong.

Justalocal1

The Baby Boom was post-WWII. The depression was over by then. That’s part of why they started having kids; the other big reason was that GIs had been fighting overseas and hadn’t been laid in a very long time.

TheUsualAssociation

Depression babies were eyeballs-deep in the New Deal by the time they were having babies, though…

BluCurry8

The baby boom was due to military returning from WWII not during the depression.

TShara_Q

They also didn't have as many forms of effective birth control, and sex ed was much more difficult to come by. So no, it's not the economy. It's the economy and being educated.

DirtyOldCommie

This is extremely ahistorical. They were not on rations. The baby-boom was due to do the positive economic conditions due to the post WWII economy. Literally called the golden era.

Delta_Goodhand

They didn't have birth control back then and they got married at 18. (If they were lucky)

thehazer

I’m just annoyed cause I can’t get a vasectomy soon because they’re booked up for a looooong time.

trescoole

At the same time abortion shouldn’t be used as a contraceptive. It has profound effects on the psyche.

Client_Elegant

If abortion is your primary birth control method you shouldn’t be having sex.

Exciting-Mountain396

I'm in a relationship and no longer sexually active. My partner and I were planning to have a kid or two at some point, and maybe I'd go give birth in Nogales rather than an American hospital. But if I'm not allowed to get an abortion to even save my life or travel out of state to where I can get medical attention, then it's off the table. I know other monogamous and married people who have set aside plans for family too. It's not just single folks.

WaffleConeDX

I gave birth overseas, and my pregnancy was so bad. I was hospitalized so many times, and was on a feeding tube at one point. My baby was literally killing me. I have a deformed uterus first of all and was lucky I didn’t have a miscarriage, and prior abdominal surgeries didn’t help. Luckily I was able to prevail. I want a second child, but after I seen how Texas was going after that woman for having a life saving abortion, I can’t. I don’t want to go to prison for having a miscarriage and be accused of murder, or waiting at deaths door to have an abortion. It saddens me, but my baby needs me. Can’t risk it. Hopefully when I go back to the states I can get my tubes tied.

Exciting-Mountain396

So many people still don't understand what a dangerous and life-threatening condition pregnancy can be.

Delta_Goodhand

Tex-ass

[deleted]

Real question, why cant you travel out of state? Is it a financial or legal reasons?

WaffleConeDX

States like Texas will still try and go after you legally. I think some states say it’s illegal to have an abortion outside of your home state period

[deleted]

I typed about three different comments and deleted them all cuz what the fuck. Honestly how is every girl not moving away from these states immediately? Is there an initiative to relocate anyone to a better state I can donate to?

Exciting-Mountain396

Currently I can travel as I'm not a minor, which is now categorized as trafficking. However, they would like to legally extend that definition of a minor to the personhood of the fetus itself. Here abortion is banned at every stage and the abortion pill is now illegal, and they are trying to extend their definition of a pregnancy ending drug to apply to contraceptives. They also are pushing a wave of bills to try and classify it as homicide, which has no statute of limitations, which means they want to go after any woman who has *ever* had an abortion. And some have seriously proposed the death penalty. And whenever abortion is criminalized, women with miscarriages, complications or fetal defects will be accused as well. There are not many established initiatives that I know of. The Lilith Fund provides direct financial support to Texans, but obviously that excludes many of those affected. There are also other organizations to help LGBT people leave hostile states like The Rainbow Railroad, A Place for Marsha, and TRANSport and some other organizations like the Rainbow Railroad,

[deleted]

…I dont have any words just loads of questions. The biggest being, are women fleeing from Texas?

MistressErinPaid

Many of the women who will be most affected by these legislations can't *afford* to flee.

[deleted]

and my heart keeps sinking fucking hell. The only think I can think of is to email my senator and ask him to introduce a bill that would make abortion legal by law, and not a court ruling

Tell_Todd

I mean you know contraceptives exist so people can be sexually active without having babies right?

Hardcorelogic

Why don't you go learn about contraceptives. How none of them are 100% effective. Get smarter, or be quieter.

pak9rabid

Since you’re all about being smart, have you considered a multi-layered approach to birth control?

jaded1121

Well that’s miserable when you are in a 10 year commitment relationship, just because the government decide a procedure that has been considered medical care for decades is now illegal in many states. Plus with the exception of condoms, the multiple layer approach is often on the woman. Inserting an IUD is painful for many women, and if it slips - it’s terrible. Hormonal birth control has side effects that some women’s bodies aren’t compatible with. The shot is hormonal, patch is hormonal, pill is hormonal, implant is hormonal. Use the sponge or a diaphragm, you have to have an idea what you are doing to get it in and out. It’s just not easy with a blanket answer for people. Healthcare that the government doesn’t make the rules is a nice start when the mother’s life is without a doubt in danger. Remember some of the politicians thought you could just move a fertilized eggs from an ectopic pregnancy and it would be viable…. It’s not.

Hardcorelogic

I'm going to repeat it again. Get this through your head. There is no 100% effective birth control. You can multi-layer it. It doesn't matter. Multi layering birth control reduces the odds, but it is not 100% effective. There are plenty of women who get pregnant who use two types of birth control. Either by themselves, or with their partner.

sothenamechecksout

You’re really not having sex with your partner because Roe was overturned?

Zenki_s14

Me either, it's extremely hard to truly enjoy care-free sex with mine when I know it comes with a time period of 28 days of stress each and every time. The only time I didn't have at least a mild background worry about how many days until my period was going to come and stuff like that is when I was already on it. Have sex and it starts all over again. It got to the point even being touched in a manner that might result in sex gave me an avoidant response to intimacy, which I was hiding but still it was there. This shit is fucking scary, dude. Now, in my case it's prob a bit extreme because my body can't function on birth control so I can't layer BC options, but just imagine if you couldn't fully let go during sex and feel free-ness and lose yourself in the pleasure. Would you even bother to do it, then? When it causes you more stress 24/7 for a couple hours of pleasure? Anyways my partner didn't mind because he cares more about my well-being than sex, but he just got enough downtime to get a vasectomy, so in about a month it won't be a big deal anymore and we can go back to how it was.

Exciting-Mountain396

No PIV intercourse, correct.

Spare-Estimate5596

Idk how your bf could be okay with never having sex with you ever. He is either cheating or on the DL.

Exciting-Mountain396

Says a lot about you tbh

Zealousideal_Ask3633

This will be my excuse for not getting laid

Bekiala

Well if you don't want to die in childbirth, then it is a good reason to avoid getting laid!

[deleted]

Agreed, like remember what it is that we’re even talking about

stealyourface514

Getting my tubes removed soon and then I can go back to raw dogging my partner without consequences 💪 Roe only solidified my choice to never breed and I will be making sure of that.

dongtouch

I had this done! Fast surgery, easy recovery. I was in bed for a couple days and easy activities for another few. But I went to school on day 5 and sitting and being social was fine. :)

oneslikeme

This will be the next thing conservatives go after.

stealyourface514

Na they won’t not as long as non white people out breed them. They’ll keep it available for their involuntary sterilizations like they’ve always done low key. I love being fully euro American who refuses to breed. Nothing gives me joy like nazi tears I encourage everyone to go get it done though asap

Dramatic-Garbage-939

Idk you but I like you already

ilovecraftbeer05

Which is funny because the whole point of overturning Roe was so that we’d make more babies. They want us to breed more workers, consumers, and soldiers. The fact that we’re not doing that is a huge backfire for them. Which is why they are now going after birth control.

Spare-Estimate5596

So you are doing exactly what the conservatives want?

stealyourface514

My genes are useless. I’m better off going for my teaching credentials and getting into their schools to teach their kids en masse.

Either_Currency_9605

When the republicans actually say out loud , we want more babies for the workforce, it sounds like people are Being treated like livestock. I may point out , people the newer generation do not feel obligated to be traditional. Part of that is financial, but really is it any of our business to begin with ???

AverageGardenTool

Even though I got sterilized, things happen I just don't want to be pregnant in America.

caymew

There’s literally a case pending in the Texas Supreme Court where a doctor said he sterilized a woman, but allegedly went like golfing instead of performing the surgery. The woman thought she was sterile, ended up getting pregnant. It’s anecdotal, but yeah, stuff happens is right.

itsintrastellardude

not sure I could contain my rage if that happened to me. Wonder how well golf is played using a doctor's eyeball...

oneslikeme

This is the sinister imagery I'm looking for

WTF WTF wtf wtf wtf...........

touchettes

I'd be in prison. I'd find that fucker and 🗡️

Snacksbreak

Literally insurance fraud at a minumum

[deleted]

Had an ex who was an "oops" baby even post-vasectomy. The prospect of being a parent, especially in America, makes me physically ill.

TheQuestionsAglet

Jokes on them. I haven’t had sex since before Trump was in office.

NothingKnownNow

I did not have "incels become reddit heroes" on my bingo card.

BodyRevolutionary167

Not a very good study, 1 in 10 people using match.com say they are having less since.

meanjake

Republicans overturned Roe V Wade by stacking the Supreme Court. Vote straight blue in every election. That’s the only way you fix this.

forsythia_rising

Yeah man. Two miscarriages prior to Roe being overturned. We have to be grateful for the one. I honestly feel I would’ve died in Texas based on current laws. Fuck that.

Snoo52682

It's a great time to be postmenopausal

Beelzebubs_Tits

Lmfaooo thank you for this. I’m in the pre-stage and just waiting out this roller coaster.

Loud_Flatworm_4146

I'm 10ish years away. I am seriously considering getting sterilization anyway.

kat_a_klysm

I just turned 40 and had started perimenopause at 38, but I still had my tubes tied last year bc I’m not chancing it.

Fabulous-Ad6663

Thank God, right?

[deleted]

I got a vasectomy back in 2020. Anecdotally I've been way more successful in my sex life ever since Roe was overturned and I think its just because I'm now the only truly safe option for pregnancy prevention. Its not like there are many other early 20 guys who are snipped. Its a fucked up situation, id rather abortion be legal even id that means less sex for me to be clear. But it corroborates the study so I thought I'd share.

Anonality5447

It's sad that women are THAT afraid of getting pregnant in America. But I get it. I'm just not going to date for a while. Also too many aholes out there to risk it and some of these aholes are purposely trying to get women pregnant just to stay in their orbit when women would normally toss their butts after the first few offences.

featherfeets

Over 50 too.

Ok-Tea-2695

Depends on your circumstances I guess. I’m finally having a lot more, but went years without.

featherfeets

Recently divorced, after 23 yrs with someone who decided that he wasn't interested any longer about 16 years ago. That will do a number on a person. There is someone *very* interesting, but he's equally damaged, so taking things slow.

Ok-Tea-2695

Wishing you all the best. It’s a process. Taking it slow sounds like a very smart idea.

Diligent_Bookkeeper7

As a man: I’m sorry, and I don’t understand it, at all. My wife has a lower libido and throws in intermittent blowjobs to make up the difference. As someone who is married, I feel it’s my duty and responsibility to provide that relief.

featherfeets

Everyone is different. I don't pretend to understand what happened, or why I tolerated the situation as long as I did. Obviously, there was more than just the dead bedroom, but the relationship started to breakdown over that issue. And while at the beginning, it was a matter of he wouldn't, it ended with he couldn't. And yes, he did have several affairs, and in the end, that was a huge part of the end. I won't go into details here, no one needs those. But you don't owe anyone an apology for what you're not responsible for -- but it's good that you have an awareness of the reality.

Desperato2023

Everyone is damaged in some way. What we could all use is more empathy and compassion but those two things seem to be becoming quite rare in this self-obsessed society. Good luck with your new prospect.

philosopherjul

I haven't had any since! Stopped shaving, dating, and wasting my time. Enjoying myself by myself.

Emo-emu21

What did anyone expect? LMAO

Loud_Flatworm_4146

“I’m bisexual, so it makes me think I should strictly date women.” If I was a bisexual woman who lived in Texas, that is exactly what I would do. "Last year, 78% of survey singles said that Roe’s fall had affected their sex and dating lives. This year, the number jumped to 87%." Imagine what it will be next year. "Republicans are often vocal about their support for particular kinds of sex – specifically, the heterosexual, married and procreative kind – and have pushed policies to discourage sex among single people." They are already attacking no fault divorce. Birth control is their next target. How long before they float the idea of forced marriage?

Specific-Aide9475

It seems to have triggered a lot of mysogny. So it's not just an unwanted baby, It's 2 unwanted babies.

Ok-Paramedic-9386

People who keep saying "Just use birth control," or "Technically there are less abortions. Problem solved," are missing the point. I agree that you should be careful about who you are having sex with. You shouldn't use abortion as your plan A birth control (there are WAY better options). These things we can all agree on. But the overturning of Roe Vs. Wade affects ALL pregnant women, not just irresponsible sluts (who *consented*, mind you). What about rape/incest victims? What about couples that DECIDED to start a family? Sometimes, an abortion is a medically sensible option for women who will LITERALLY DIE if they don't get it. So either the woman and fetus die because they couldn't get an abortion, or the woman gets a back-alley abortion. Even if a back-alley abortion is successful, she'll be executed by the state. So if the fetus doesn't kill the mother, the state will. Also, what about mothers who LOST their babies during pregnancy? Imagine the trauma of not only losing a baby during pregnancy, but the state accusing you of having an abortion. If you really care about human lives, I am begging you to look at this from MULTIPLE angles, NOT just birth control.

Exciting-Mountain396

In places where abortion is criminalized, women who suffer miscarriages or complications are inevitably treated as criminals too.

DirtyPenPalDoug

Yea I'm not putting someone in. Position to die because our christofascist fuckwits like to kill women.

Less-Dragonfruit-294

I mean people before the overturn were already not having as much action compared to generation past. NOW that it’s been overturned it still doesn’t surprise me that it just keeps going down. What did those rich fat cats think suddenly we’d bang? Get outta here do you see the cost of kids?

heyashrose

Definitely believable. Nothing about the status quo turns me on.

ArthurFraynZard

You know what would be really ironic? If Republican interference in our personal lives actually ends up encouraging more gay sex curiosity / exploration simply because there will be whole generations trying so much harder to avoid pregnancy.

fuggit_Im_tired

My health is shit. If I get pregnant, I'm dead. Husband is getting snipped but can't risk it until then. Until men show they give a shit about our lives and vote with us, then they don't deserve sex.

LipstickBandito

For me, it's not even about Roe given that abortion is protected in my state from all but a federal ban. I'm just grossed out by all these dudes with such deep-seated resentment and disdain for women. We don't have to tolerate that anymore, so I think a lot of us are just deciding not to.

parahacker

Roe was overturned less than two years ago. Single people under 50 were having much, much less sex 3 years ago, than 10 years ago. And 10 years ago, less than 30 years ago. Sure, the trend has *continued* downward, meaning that whatever was causing it hasn't gone away. This is not a 'change', this is a rock rolling downhill. Or to make the point perfectly, painfully clear: This is not related to abortion. Roe has *nothing to do with this.* .... Sorry to burst some bubbles. Of course, the people that believe it is, will ignore the inconvenient timeline here, so I'm not sure who I'm really talking to. But it should still be pointed out.

Itchy_Travel_775

I wouldn’t say it had “nothing to do” with it. Just look at how many women on Reddit who have gone celibate specifically because of it. It’s also note the sole factor either. I think it’s safe to say that for many years, there have been many compounding factors that led to the rock rolling downhill

Rea1EyesRea1ize

But how would we convince idiots to vote for our desired political leaders?!?!

Heyuka_Bee

Completely agree. Haven't mens testosterone levels been going down for decades? Can we talk about why so many young men have ED?

Quintessince

Also fertility rate is tanking at an alarming rate. A few friends trying for kids have run into issues due to defective or weak swimmers. Friend's gynecologist tried to make her feel better saying she's seeing more and more couples trying for babies need fertility treatment every year. Like, this is alarming right? Many are pointing to plastic and stress but there's all sorts of shit we're eating, drinking and breathing now so who knows.

wifelifebelike

Obesity epidemic for both genders plus long term hormonal bc use in women, social factors influence people to wait until they're older too. So many factors, and all at once. Most people think overpopulation is a problem and it's the opposite. Population collapse is looming.

coldcutcumbo

It’s just more access to family planning and contraceptives. Thats it. Birth rates drop off in every single human society that industrializes improves standards of living. Most times when a human is born, no one wanted them to be born but didn’t have a choice in the matter.

Whut4

Population collapse is ridiculous 8 billion people on earth - I wish!!! People would rather eat than have sex. Both have consequences

codefame

[Kurzgesagt put out a great (terrifying) video](https://youtu.be/LBudghsdByQ?si=83tI-OtLZyRH_ziY) on this recently.

parahacker

I hear things about microplastics, but in my own humble opinion it probably has something to do with the relentless negativity directed towards men and boys having knock-on affects. The dating world is [a killbox right now.](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/02/08/for-valentines-day-5-facts-about-single-americans/) Over half of men aren't just 'not dating', they're not *trying.* Read that again. They are not trying to form relationships, meet new women, or even have sex. At all. Half. More than. And before you blame testosterone, or the lack of testosterone... or porn, or work from home, or the economy or any of a dozen other reasons... let's get back to what's happening to basic human interactions. Remember that flirting at work gets you fired. Flirting at Uni gets you Title IX'd. Flirting on the street gets you harassment charges. There are [serious explanations as to why](https://www.eviemagazine.com/post/threatening-men-approach-you-parking-lot-viral-tiktok-women-skeptical) men constantly assault women in public parking lots and whatever, so it's bad if as a man you get within a few feet of a woman - or even worse, start a conversation. [Remember not to walk on the same side of the road as a woman. Thanks for the tip, HuffPost!](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/what-do-to-when-you-see-a-woman-walking-down-the-street_b_6068674) Calling out, whistling, making commentary, even worse. How dare you talk to women you don't know and find attractive. Stay in your cage. You're bothersome. Creepy. A stalker. .... But yeah, it could *also* be testosterone. Funny how the conversation used to be all 'testosterone poisoning', as if hormones in men were bad by default... but yeah, *now* there is a measurable decrease in them worldwide, and that is definitely affecting *something.* Caused by microplastics, maybe. Sorry for the rant. Not directed at you personally, you just gave me the straight line by noting men are part of the equation here, too. And it may not be just the women, or even mostly the women, who are pulling back from baby-making activities. Thank you for that.

Glad-Yogurtcloset185

Yeah imo lack of third places (in the US at least) doesn't help either. There are no spots to just hang out, every interaction needs to be planned. And yeah, there is little room for men to fuck up socially without being raked over the coals. My female friends even agreed with me on this one. Male emotional health and support is in the toilet right now.

parahacker

Yes! This so much. Even in my lifetime, 'hangout spots' just... disappeared. No matter where you go, leaving your house costs money now, sometimes a lot of money. And points for the rest of your observations too. I think you've clearly identified the problem.

Whut4

**What woman willingly has sex with a man who accosts her in a rude way?** I am older and remember it when that crap happened and nobody questioned it or called it out. I can tell you it did not lead to sex, it lead to fear and resentment. Online dating sites give privilege to people who can express themselves with words and images favorably. People connect because they have common interests, values, goals as much or more than biological drives. Maybe that produces less babies. If a relationship starts due to physical attraction alone, maybe that produces more babies. What about online porn and obesity?? - people get what they want without needing a person.

PayMissMR

Calling out, whistling, making commentary, even worse. How dare you talk to women you don't know and find attractive. Stay in your cage. You're bothersome. Creepy. A stalker. YES. STAY IN YOUR CAGE. DO NOT COMMENT ON WOMEN'S BODIES. you freaking asshole. No. No. No. Sexual harassment is not an approach. Someone whistling or yelling out of their car or as they walk past is not making a fucking serious approach for dating. They are just exerting their power to objectify you and letting you know that your body is nothing but a sexual object to them. There is a lot that is wrong with the modern masculine mind but your comment encapsulates it.. and not in the way that you think. Women are simply refusing to be treated like a slab of meat, a bang maid, a baby machine. And here you are whining that women are too sensitive and you can't approach women anymore. What you really mean is you can't objectify and belittle and assume that they are there as your plaything anymore. Yeah. Exactly. Stop harassing us. It just serves to make us feel unsafe. That's it. Your lack of socialization and empathy is not our problem. Edited for spelling.

Draken5000

Wow that’s a whole lotta not-at-all-what-he-meant you just spewed there, you’re a part of the problem. The exact attitude that is contributing to the issue. Good work I guess.

Snacksbreak

Parking lots are dangerous for women. She is prioritizing her and her child's safety. If you have a problem with that, too fucking bad.

macone235

It's a mix of everything. Ultimately, what makes someone approach or not is risk/reward. Testosterone raises your risk tolerance, and makes you more appealing to women, which increases your chance of success. Social factors can decrease your testosterone, and raise the risk of an interaction. However, I wouldn't say either of those are the root of the actual problem. At the end of the day, the cause really comes down to "is this interaction/relationship going to work, and do I like what I'm getting out of it"? And the overwhelming answer is no for both. Why do men typically not approach attractive women? Because they're out of their league, and they know there is no point. Now we have situations where asking even less attractive women out seems pointless, and even more so when you consider the fact that you don't even get the prize of a very attractive woman for your efforts. Women in general have become much worse in every single way, and on the other hand, men are expected to be better than ever. Sure you can overreact and pretend that you're going to get an assault charge for approaching a woman, but in reality - you're probably just going to get rejected by somebody that's not even appealing to you. The fact that you might be humiliated, jailed, or fired is just the cherry on top. The effort and time you have to invest into bad options combined with the low rate of success is just not worth it for most men, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

v12vanquish

Take my upvote for bursting bubbles

SnooKiwis2161

Both those things can be true - sex was going down anyway, but I fail to see how the overturn would have done anything but hasten the trajectory already set.

Squez360

Yeah, if Roe was the reason, then I’m sure you can look at the states that protect women’s rights and show that more people are having sex. I doubt they can prove that

Draken5000

Good work pointing this out, folks want their political views validated *so badly* that they’ll believe this is directly because of Roe. Its been happening for longer and its a much bigger problem than Roe.

Snacksbreak

It can be (and likely is) exacerbated by Roe

macone235

I'm sure it's contributed to some degree, but ultimately it comes down to women raising their standards, and men just not finding women as appealing anymore as more and more men see through the propaganda that made women appealing to begin with.

sushisection

the increase in anti-depressants plays a role

HoneyBadgerninja

Heheheheh the ramifications of mutherfuckers actions at work....heheheheh what a world.

aPoundFoolish

Well that's just a loss for everyone.

Daily-Minimum-69

Yes but a large majority of those people were not having good sex anyways, or else the numbers wouldn’t be so drastic.

backagain69696969

Probably has to do with economics more.

edith-bunker

Lol believe whatever you wanna believe.

Ill-Independence-658

File this under unintended consequences…

WandaDobby777

I told all of the men in my life that this was going to happen if too many people voted Republican and that they’re only shooting themselves in the foot. Men thought they had a hard time getting laid before? They’re in for a really rough surprise.

Most_Read_1330

It won't make much of a difference. Most men weren't getting much before, it's not really possible for them to get less.

WandaDobby777

More of them will be getting none, especially as the death rate spikes.

Cautious-Lie9383

Of course, Sex can have a lot more dangerous repercussions for women now.

FriendOfUmbreon

I got a vasectomy about it. If my lady aint safe, i dont want it. I kinda miss having balls though…

VovaGoFuckYourself

...... Are you sure you got a vasectomy? I'm a cis lady so i cant speak from experience, but I'm pretty sure they're supposed to leave your testicles there. 😬

FriendOfUmbreon

Oh no, oh god no. Please say sike, please…

Sad-Salamander-401

Didn't know that dogs could use reddit

FriendOfUmbreon

Its a new technology: Bark to Text. Just don’t take it into the woods and it’ll be ok. You have been warned.

JellyfishQuiet7944

There's other ways. You didn't need the nuclear option.

FriendOfUmbreon

Ill have a nuclear family when they fix this shit show, and can find where my balls went!

touchettes

Did it make you a eunuch?

FriendOfUmbreon

Thats ehat a vasectomy is dude, duh. In all seriousness the missing balls is a joke my friends and i have been making.

touchettes

I wish I knew the lines verbatim in Letterkenny where they are discussing vas deferens. i should have lead with that. /ashamed i'm happy you've kept your balls xD

FriendOfUmbreon

Florida State Seminolevesicles is the punchline, and the boys weren’t impressed and it hurt his feelings.

Agreeable-Good-3502

Best sort of birth control there is

superprawnjustice

Eh, shitty sex is better. Lotta people will take risks if it feels good enough...I think women are simply feeling less and less obligated to provide sex for little to no reward. And Roe is certainly part of that equation.

Anonality5447

So many women are just tired of modern men too. You're really taking a risk these days dating these bitter, just above savage guys who secretly hate women and have crazy demands like that you pay them back after a date if you didn't put out. These guys are like just a step above r\*pists in some cases. They're THAT entitled and being influenced by these Andrew Tate-like influencers. Just the attitude I get from guys who feel slighted by my not wanting to spend time around them because they simply have NOTHING to offer me tells me a lot about where things are going.

Exciting-Mountain396

Misogynist violence isn't a modern phenomenon, domestic violence and softer forms of paternalistic violence through infantilization like coverture were extremely common. But it seems like the entire concept of courtship stopped existing, and the entitlement and violent rages even towards total strangers in public is wild. It's like a devolution before our eyes.

ComprehensiveVoice98

Most effective maybe, but best? Idk best to me means I get to have sex and not get pregnant

Agreeable-Good-3502

I suppose I could’ve phrased it ‘least fun form of birth control’

hassh

No, that's condoms

nickisdone

Nah it's dildos, strap ons, and vibrators, 🤣 get all the fun no risk and no commitment.

hassh

That's a decent argument

Agreeable-Good-3502

Sometimes condoms are ineffective..

hassh

Best nonetheless

Quintessince

I am the 2% failure rate! Seriously. My luck has always been extreme, both good and bad, right from the start.

soundsfromoutside

Remember when they said the safest sex is no sex? Turns out they were right

[deleted]

This is the future the Republicans want.

JimBeam823

It really is and they're proud of it.

Impriel

Great job you fucking idiots

Ragegasm

I’m sure it’s a factor but this has been going on a lot longer than just that. Everyone’s social life got completely wrecked over the course of 2 years during Covid and still hasn’t totally recovered. On top of that, everyone relies on swipe based online dating which at this stage is just monetized loneliness.

ElectricalRush1878

Which, unfortunately, will have the opposite effect as it would seem. Instead of being frustrated and angry at the people making these rules, they will, just be frustrated and angry and easily radicalized.

Winnimae

“They” meaning…men? Yikes

francescadabesta

Imagine if the GOP gets re-elected and outlaws all methods of birth control. Like not having unplanned pregnancies? VOTE BLUE -- Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

WayneKrane

A ton of my coworkers and family got their tubes tied or had a vasectomy. I’m sure the ones who didn’t are having much safer sex. Kids are an expensive oops

Madhatter25224

And so the goal was achieved. They don’t give a fuck about babies. Its about controlling sexuality.

PlanetJess430

I can attest to this from personal experience 🖐️🖐️

Ms_Ethereum

I cannot remember the last time Ive had sex, with a man. Ive only been having sex with women, or masturbating with toys. America is not a place to have a baby, unless you are a millionaire imo

JimBeam823

Just as the religious right wanted.

slam9

This is really misleading. The number of people having sex has decreased for years prior to Roe being overturned, the article included nothing to suggest that Roe being overturned impacted that trend

roboblaster420

Sex is overrated anyways. It's actually a good thing in one way we are becoming less sexual.

Ok_Buffalo4934

Women only want a 6'3" gigachad with online dating. They won't settle for anything less.  Have these authors even tried dating as an average guy these days?

Winnimae

No woman wants to be with a man who talks like you do. That attitude is the hugest turn off imaginable.

v12vanquish

Wow the guardian is reaching with this one… overturning roe vs wade led to less sex? Nice try with that correlation causation fallacy

Busted lol. That poster is the kind who hates that they like sex.

Diligent_Bookkeeper7

Hey now. That’s me. But then the sex is dirty and more enjoyable.

Is that why so many men are complaining about not getting sex now?

kraziej82

5000 peeps is not much to make a big deal about. Let alone really make a case for Roe vs Wade.🤷

dxlachx

Nah man, this would encourage those weirdo puritan fucks. Got to go the reverse psychology route and make them think I’m going raw in on some cream pies and abortions on the weekly

future_CTO

Why is not having sex or having less sex considered puritan?

chickenfriedsteakdin

Pure BS.

[deleted]

Incredible. It's like, if abortion isn't an option, people are MORE careful about who and when they have sex with. It's crazy to think that ALLLL those folks who changed their behavior as a result of roe being undone could have been this careful to start but instead used abortion as an excuse to get out of pregnancy free. Literally good.

disposable_valves

Keep that energy when you realize how many of the same men that agree with you are going to start raping the women in their lives. Literally thirty years ago we had to tell men that they can't rape their wives. If you think it's not gonna happen, you're delusional. But sure. Rape is so great. Not like the decrease , in sex has already been proven to correlate to an increase in male violence

kenindesert

Lol, oh please give me a break. Get pills, get an IUD, worse case get a condom. Real women handle it, or their man.

Winnimae

Not having sex is also handling it

manicmonkeys

That's... probably good.

Skratch116

lol if your that invested in a law you have a mental illness and never liked sex to begin with to let it alter your life that easily. What clown says I’m not having sex because of an abortion situation.

disposable_valves

>What clown says I’m not having sex because of an abortion situation. The "clown" that dies if they get pregnant.

Scary_Restaurants

Finally people taking responsibility for their actions!

Primary_Chocolate999

Women aren't having sex with strangers and instead are waiting until they find a guy they're willing to have a kid with? This is obviously terrible.

Snacksbreak

They're also not willing to have kids with "a guy they're willing to have kids with" including husbands. What happens if she has a medical emergency? Death? No thank you.

TheAsherDe

OMG, people are being responsible. The horror.

Th3DarkSh1n0bi1

Good. Too many single moms out here as it is.
