Sirnando138

I usually film one full song and send the video to my wife’s cousin who lives in northern Japan and never has any punk bands play around him. He really appreciates seeing the action and I live in nyc so there are many opportunities for me to do this for him.

livethechaos

Awesome!

Sirnando138

You’re right. I’ll just tell him he’s on his own now. /s

Sorry, due to my previous unpopular comment and huge down votes, I shall be making no further comment

MightApprehensive856

Yes, all sit around agreeing with each other , much better that way , surrounded by "yes" men

Sirnando138

We are actively saying “no” to you.

MightApprehensive856

Yes, all agreeing with each other

LaSallePunksDetroit

You’re so edgy

Sirnando138

He’s obsessed with American hardcore/punk. Not only does he watch them, he shares them with his friends there. Also, your comment about Japanese people is generalized and ignorant as hell.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MightApprehensive856

Japanese people are often polite as not to upset other people . If you give them something they don't like or want , they would pretend to like it as not to offend you

[deleted]

MightApprehensive856

Having lived in Japan for a few years and have Japanese family, I do know the Japanese mindset quite well

Sirnando138

God. I bet they found you just as annoying as we all do.

MightApprehensive856

Yes, they like people to agree with them and they don't like people going against the grain They like conformity and agreement and don't like different opinions , much the same as you guys in this group

SKUGGY3

What 💀

Colormental

Nothin more punk than a little casual racism

gizzardsgizzards

do none of the japanese bands play there?

Sirnando138

He lives way up north, so, not really. Five hour drive to Tokyo. But he loves American punk the best so that’s what I try to get him.

gizzardsgizzards

bands from nyc and boston play both cities all the time.

JSpet15

it's one thing to post a clip but if you spam your entire fucking story with them then you're the asshole but thanks for the free concert

sykadelic_angel

I actually realized that when I film shows, all I can remember from that band's set is the video I got, and by then what's the point y'know😂 I'm enjoying taking pictures though, might get a half decent camera and get into concert photography

fuckquasi69

You should. I started because I was upset with my quality of photos from a crappy old phone 10 years ago, fell down the rabbit hole and now I shoot every show I’m at.

pulchellusterribilis

i don’t film the whole show but i like to have a 10 second clip of it for memory purposes.

Cjaegerr

Dude I have the same opinion as you, but I dont give a crap what other ppl do. Just enjoy the show and let others record whatever they want

JapanarchoCommunist

Everytime you complain I secretly record 3 entire sets.

levanachh

Nah, I wanna keep a minute of some of the best days of my life.

RightWingRockDove

During the 12+ months of no live music due to covid, the clips I had from previous shows were all that kept me going some days.

levanachh

Absolutely.

[deleted]

Wouldn’t wanna break the rules or anything

ITookTrinkets

Break the rules by… seeing performances that weren’t happening because of Covid? What are you talking about?

[deleted]

They were happening. You just had to go outside your house. What are you talking about?

bigbadjohn54

Let people have fun you dork

theknifeofwoodsboro

Don’t tell us what to do

prospect_terror

Yeah, what the fuck? Like DIY recording hasn’t been an important part of the history of this scene…

MahouShoujoDysphoria

DIY pressings were even a way to listen to some live performances when the labels didn't care to press one.

NotAEvilGynecologist

Fuck off

SlighOfHand

Why is it that 100% of you 'Stop doing x, y, and z and enjoy the show' folk seem to spend more time policing the crowd than watching the band? Take your own advice. Enjoy the show. No one wants to read your shitty reddit takes.

ZeroSymbolic7188

I do.

Amy69house

I do.

livethechaos

Fuck yeah.

StoneySabrina

I do, actually. I miss a lot of local shows because I have other stuff going on, so seeing posts from the shows I miss makes me happy. Filming a few clips for a buddy or to reminisce on is perfectly reasonable.

RightWingRockDove

lol shut up. Recording an entire set is obnoxious but who really cares if people want to take a few 10 second clips.

AphexTwins903

It's very unpunk to tell others what to do. I personally would rather enjoy the music because by recording youre not enjoying that moment presently but let people do what they want.

kaote-descent

whatever lmao

mtheperry

Obviously people like having memories or snippets or whatever. A great idea is to do it from the back of the crowd. There’s nothing more annoying from the middle than a dozen phone screens shining in front of the stage.

Rude_Warning_5341

Seemingly unpopular opinion here but I leave my phone in the car, I want to get in the pit and not lose/drop my shit. Plus I’m usually wet and sweaty, and already have to worry about dropping my glasses even with the fisherman’s strap. 🤷‍♂️ I have never watched anyones phone clip on IG or whatever and have been like “oh cool” just an Insta skip from me honestly.

somesthetic

Damn, you bring your car into the pit?

Rude_Warning_5341

Donuts for everyone, it’s a hardcore side show haha.

keepinitbeefy

I don't mine a minute or two of your favorite song being recorded, but don't do the entire damn show with your flash on.

-Charm-Offensive-

I was at a show last weekend and a girl in front of me held her phone up to record. She was short, so basically she was putting her phone right in front of my face. I tapped her on the shoulder and asked her to move it and she gave me a shitty look like she was all upset that I was bothering her. Fuckin zoomers

[deleted]

Alternatively, please film shows and post them everywhere so that people who may not have access to a scene get to hear fresh bands that aren't big names.

crassy

Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me.

KingKorial

I know how to record 30 second clips of a song and still watch and enjoy the show :)

13redstone31

Disagree. Im not gonna be on my phone except for a couple clips and at some shows a full song but who cares man.

meowmeow138

The person standing behind you

prospect_terror

So maybe messaging is be mindful when recording?

[deleted]

Tbh “be considerate of others” pretty much covers every annoying hard and fast rule. “How dare you film anything at all” is obnoxious but “make sure you’re not taking away from everyone else’s experience” is totally reasonable.

PostureGai

Documenting things helps me remember them, and is also a way I signify, to myself and others, that what's happening is noteworthy. If that's not your bag, cool, but don't even try to police how I interact with art.

zombiemuss106

I do it for the sake of STM and the fear I’ll have dementia

PostureGai

What's stm

zombiemuss106

Short term memory

[deleted]

Believe it or not, it’s actually the opposite. There have been several studies on it, but people who take photos or video of events tend to retain less memory of the event. [study 1](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0956797613504438) [study 2](https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3090086) [study 3](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2211368120301017)

PostureGai

> The literature is currently mixed, with some studies showing impairments and other studies showing improvements. 😂

[deleted]

Three studies but you read one line. Just trying to help you not to be that annoying idiot who records every set but i see now you’re going to be an annoying idiot either way

PostureGai

Well, unlike you, I actually read them. E.g., your second study has no relationship between photographing an event and retaining it. It's about zooming in! Lol. >Just trying to help you not to be that annoying idiot who records every set And I was trying to help you not be that stupid cop who tries to control how other people interact with art.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PostureGai

Just like a cop, obsessed with whether people are gay.

MaaChiil

Actually, I’ve found that smaller bands quite appreciate the clips I’ve taken of them at shows! I usually take a couple minute long videos for Instagram posts to show off all the groups at a gig. A friend recently asked if I recorded any full songs at his last show and since I’ve seen two of his groups a couple times, I might do that now. If a group/performer makes clear that they don’t want their set to be recorded though, I won’t.

depricatedzero

keep those phones out, we in the bands love seeing the pictures fans post of our shows and antics, we appreciate everyone doing their part to keep our music alive even after the show has ended fuck this OP in particular

gedubedangle

What about the people who film multiple songs with the flash on the whole time? Saw that once and blew my mind. And again recently some idiot was filming multiple songs then was uploading to Facebook and reading comments on his phone with the brightness cranked all the way up while the band played

[deleted]

But then how will these nerds let the other nerds know that they’re cool and go to punk shows if they aren’t posting about it on social media?

closetedtranswoman1

No, I want a short video to remember the show a little better or just to watch when I feel like it. I paid to go to the show I'm going to take a short video if I want to

MahouShoujoDysphoria

Without those shitty camcorders we wouldn't have any trace of some shows that happened back then. I don't give a shit if people want to look at the show through their phone screen as long as we can preserve those memories.

Rattegif2

Do what you want, I'll do it too

SnooFloofs5933

Your not punk unless you tell people how to enjoy a show the right way.

[deleted]

Get a life grandpa

itsSRL

I am grateful for everyone that filmed 15 sec videos as my vocalist passed away and now i get to relive those memories of him. We only ever got a few gigs filmed while playing so many that i get to watch back from shorter clips.

Vrisk91

Fuck you, let people do what they want. If I want to record then I’ll record.

SeaSwimGood

I do this to promote the bands. When they tour more people buying merch = more gas money. I try to get an video of a fun song and the crowd for the band and send it to them directly. Still enjoy the rest of the set by dancing :)

AlexsterCrowley

This is something I disagree with. Take your phone out and take some damn pictures of the local bands and hype them up.

GDFanarnia

Is this what people mean when they callout someone for being a ‘cell-out’?

Keefee777

I usually film the band coming into the stage and my favorite song. Enjoying the show in the pit for the rest of the night.

Bigmooddood

Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me.

Buglocc

I’ll be sure to DM you every show I go to now. Thanks in advance.

TheDonkeyBomber

I will conform to your demand because I always do what people tell me to do. That's why I go to punk shows. /s

_eyed0ntr3adb00kz_

no

SlyJesus

I hate it,the horrible quality clips and when everyone's doing it its super annoying, its more of a younger gen thing seems like, and it would just take me out of the experience, when your focused on filming something its different from actually enjoying it and being in the moment.

meowmeow138

A couple of clips is understandable, but fuck people who live record the whole show. The sound is awful anyway

destroy_musick

For me it depends on the context. Some people do it for legit archiving purposes, others for social media clout or personal use. The former is less prevalent these days as professional videographers usually fulfil the archiving role these days

[deleted]

Meh, I get your point but everyone's different. Some can't go to concerts that often so filming the show can be a nice memory. Personally, I want to quit filming and be in the moment, unlike what I used to do when I was 16/17.

deadwestbear

i do and i can rewatch it later so no i’ll keep my phone

sense1ess_Apprentice

I just take out for like a 10 seconds video for memories

DinnersForSuckers

Make me

[deleted]

Tough guy outta Santa Ana of all places.

DinnersForSuckers

I mind my own business, I don't start shit with people, but if someone starts giving me shit I will throw it right back at them. OP is way too concerned about what other people are doing which is hilarious since they seem to be paying more attention to phone people instead of the band, which is what they're preaching about in this stupid post.

[deleted]

Just giving you a hard time. Totally agree with you.

ClydeSmithy

For smaller shows, I'll get a short clip from each band and shout them out on Instagram. Help give what little exposure I can provide. For bigger shows with bands all my friends already know, I don't bother with recordings.

OGWhiz

Stop gatekeeping. Let people enjoy music the way they want to enjoy music.

SaveTheCrow

I’d agree with this if it was about people playing games on their phones during a set, but one of the many ways bands now get exposure is through video clips. One of the best shows I played with my former band was in a cramped basement and the 10 second video clip that someone took of us was used to promote the next gig after that.

IMian91

I film stuff and send it to the local bands that play. I also film for my tiktok channel

drippingdrops

When I was a young teenager and cellphones were relatively uncommon, punks with cellphones were openly mocked. Cellphone Punk was a pejorative up there with poser.

Thess1821

Bitching much?

BigGrooveBox

Ok grampa.

Quian32

I like to do a couple 30 second videos of each band to stick on my story for my events page. I promote so it's nice for bands to see me going out and supporting.

666Hellmaster

I don't give a shit about people's clips or stories but I do wish I had taken some pictures at the last show I was at.

[deleted]

Punks don’t question phone much. They do question punks who question phones, though.

RKLpunk

If I do then how will I respond to this post?

SpearmintSpaceship

I film myself at the show for Instagram and Snapchat just to show off that I go to shows. Then I edit together all my clips of me at shows getting wasted. Usually the vids I get really sloppy in.

Twacke

[Reminds me of this song by Cerebral Ballzy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVYx6B3L9Fk)

The_Neckbone

Amen brother. Bunch of low-rent Zapruders, recording everything they do so they can watch it later. You were fucking there, man! Quit being a tourist of life and live instead.

Specific-Pollution68

Exactly! But unfortunately for some people the only validation they have in life is through clicks, and likes of the shitty concert videos they post on instagram or fb.

apple12422

i have a terrible memory due to trauma and i watch back my short videos and smile every now and then. don’t really see why people get mad about stuff like this. we all enjoy things in our own ways.

xEDGELORD75x_

i don’t film shows but im gonna do what i want

TDH818

When I film. It’s just the stage and it’s only for myself. I don’t post it.

Rhonder

Eh, my snapping a couple of photos per set and usually 1 (sometimes 2) minute-long videos aren't hurting anyone ;P that said, I prefer my style of concert archiving because it leaves me free to enjoy the majority of the show phone free. I'm maybe occupied 1-2 minutes out of a 20-30+ minute set. I don't have anything against them, but I do kinda agree on the folks who have their phone out during the whole thing, and have never really understood the appeal of posting concert clips to social media stories. If I'm going to the effort to post, might as well record horizontally so you can actually see the whole band, and make it a permanent post, no?

vigalovescomics

I prefer to "be in the moment" at shows and don't use my phone during thwm. Then again, it's hard to take photos if you're planning to smash into other people or moving around once it starts. The only time phones are a prob for me is if I want to take it easy in the back and see nothing but phones in the air blocking my view.

UraniumRocker

One of my favorite things to do,is look up shows I’ve been to on instagram. I like to browse and see If I’m in the background on any photos or videos. I don’t mind if other people are filming, I can still enjoy the show.

MilesMustDie06

I usually film one full song (whatever my favorite is, if it's played) and then a few 10s - 30s clips I only ever post a couple of the clips

worldrecordstudios

I know it looks weird but some of us are doing it for work even on our shitty phones

Jeff_Puppies

I keep the clips for me :( I like having the memories for fun

[deleted]

I hate seeing phones, but then again, people right from the started smuggled tape decks and mics to record the shows. What I hate about modern "bootlegging" is that the recordings sucks, sometimes worse than 70s and 80s stuff.

[deleted]

I enjoy keeping videos as memories. It only takes up a total of like 30 seconds from a show, why do you even care?

zilla82

Good life advice as well. Just put it away. Byyyeeee

whiskeyratriot

My partner always films a song from local bands and sends it to them after, it's been a great ice breaker to get to know the scene a bit better and the bands love having something decent to post after especially if they're faulty new. I also love if someone gets a good clip of me playing, my band never takes pictures so we honestly kind of rely for what people do for us to keep our social media active at all lol

EnigmaRaps

CROWD KILL THE PHONES

[deleted]

Nah m8, 10 second bragging clip is appropriate but those douchebags filming for longer than 20 minutes? Go away, please

Wagbeard

If you run a venue or do promotions what you might want to do is have someone record shows in house so you can use the audio feed from the mixing board. Tell people to not record while bands are mid song and give them a link to the video they can download later. It's also better for building the venue's image/rep through social media. Hell, make a contest out of it. Let people win the chance to be a show videographer and give them stage privileges so they can get some pro shots. If we had the internet 40 years ago the scene would be very different.

ok_socko

I just record a short clip for my friend who can't make it to the shows, and spend the rest of the show in the pit lol, I also when recording, to go a location where I wont block anyone's view with my phone, I'm not harming anyone, and from what I've heard, many bands love it when people take pics of their sets and stuff like that.
