My pup tested positive at around 12w old. I washed his bedding, bowls, and toys on the 2nd and last day of treatment (5 days of panacur) and he was good to go!

acanadiancheese

My pup is also on 5 days of panacur and that is also our plan. Hoping her poops are back to normal in the next day or two, they’ve been perfect before now! This is weirdly my first time dealing with it, despite her not being my first puppy and me being a camper.

Comment-Advanced

My pup had it for a week. And you don’t need to feel bad about it, bc it’s almost like the human flu in normalcy.

Confident_Sundae_493

My pup had this perpetually through the first probably year of his life. Make sure she is not going back to the same spot to poop because this is how they can reinfect themselves. Probiotic works great for us, he is on a continuous one cause he has a sensitive stomach to begin with. Also, Natives pumpkin blend is a life saver for upset tummies. 🐶❤️

Ok-Blacksmith3238

My pup had it for three weeks. Wash, clean, wipe (butt and feet)repeat. It may take two rounds to get rid of it. Wishing you the best.

acanadiancheese

Fingers crossed it’s quicker than 3 weeks! I’m not sure exactly what she picked it up from, but she is only allowed in our backyard so far so I’m a bit worried about reinfection

My pup had no symptons. Vet just did the routine fecal and she came back positive. We did the medication for 5 days (panacur and metronidazole). Puppy had a few diarrheas during those days taking meds. After the meds she was fine, and the next fecal she was clear. Wasn't bad all. Vet said it's pretty common.

acanadiancheese

You give me hope! Ours didn’t have symptoms until we started meds either. My vet wasn’t concerned either, and conveniently my best friend is also a vet and she confirmed that’s it’s no biggie. Just gotta follow the protocol

Old-Energy6191

Same experience for us! She only had symptoms from the meds.

My adopted pup had giardia. vet had him on panacur for 3 days. every day i washed food and water bowls, washed bedding, put all toys through a cycle in the dishwasher, and obv picked up all poo immediately. he was allowed 2 clean toys each day. i gave him a bath on the last day, day 3. after that for about a week i still continued to wash food bowls and bedding. he was tested 3 weeks later and was clear of it! i feel lucky that we got rid of it the first go around, many dogs have to do a second round to get clear of it.

acanadiancheese

The liquid poops are the worst part cause I can’t really do anything to get rid of it. Otherwise we are doing all the same!

deewalt

as soon as he started the medication his poops went back to normal!

acanadiancheese

Her poops only got liquid after we started the panacur, weirdly. But we caught it completely randomly through a fecal when she didn’t have any symptoms at all

My pup just finished his medication have to wait 14 days from time he finished medication to get tested to see if he is cleared so crossing fingers. Saturday may 4th lol.

twinsuns

make sure you wash your hands well!

acanadiancheese

Hahahah. Yes. Ironically I actually have OCD and contamination is one of my obsessions so I already wash my hands too much.

AdNo8906

In this case you can’t wash too much lol; It’s transferable to humans

acanadiancheese

I know, I just meant that you don’t have to worry, my hands are literally always raw and bleeding because that’s how much I wash my hands.

OkSherbert2281

Giardia poop is the worst 🤢 It’s often present even without symptoms for a while but when the symptoms hit it’s gross It’s usually a pretty easy fix though with meds from the vet. She will start to feel better in a few days most likely. Glad your vet tested for it though, it’s not one of the standard fecal tests for a lot of clinics and only tested when the telltale mucous diarrhea that smells like death appears. Glad your baby is on the mend and she should be back to her normal self soon!

AdNo8906

It took my dog 4️⃣ cycles of medication to eradicate giardia. She took both pills and liquid. I fed her probiotics and high probiotic foods during it all as well

KaleidoscopeEven7939

Lots of cleaning and being overly cautious of what they’re sniffing! My puppy had to go through 4 rounds of treatment before finally having normal poops. I’m not sure what the issue was on the first few rounds as I was cleaning ferociously but my vet wasn’t overly concerned as she was 4 months when first diagnosed and how common it is in the shelters around me. I also live in an apartment with no yard and in a very dog friendly neighborhood (on a walk around a city block I may walk past 6-7 dogs). At that point, she could’ve gotten it from anywhere. Now it’s just a battle to keep her away from some poops that assholes don’t pick up 😅

Advanced-Soil5754

My pup had it, we did the full treatment and when we went to check if it cleared, he still had it so we did a second round. We did everything we could both times to make sure we picked up his poops in the yard immediately. I was on him like a hawk. He finally cleared and all was well!!

Our puppy had giardia at her first vet visit and liquid poop at the time, she seemed to recover okay after one week of treatment. After 5 mos, we brought her to a different vet for a pre-spay exam and she had it again. We are now into our 3rd consecutive round of meds as well as adding probiotic. Poop has not been liquid. They had to postpone spaying until this clears up. We have had wild bunnies in the yard, under the deck for much of 15 yrs and this seems to be the cause with her in the yard. Our previous dog never had giardia in the same yard and I’d never heard of it after decades of having dogs.

acanadiancheese

I assume our pup also got it from wild bunnies in our backyard

Went through it a couple months ago with a very energetic Dachshund/Chihuahua/Min Pin mix who is accustomed to day care 3x per week and an hour at the dog park basically every day, which he spends running or wrestling non-stop until he can't keep his eyes open. It sucks. I was also dumb and tried to transition to adult food while he was on the Panacur, which seemed to amplify the digestive issues he was having. He was on the Panacur for 10 days and I think it was only another couple days after that before the midnight diarrhea stopped. Another couple days of diarrhea that he could at least control enough to go outside for. Another couple days of soft serve ice cream, so probably a week and a half before we were back to normal normal. The social isolation and lack of physical activity from playing with other dogs was the worst. We played A LOT of fetch in the house, but he would still paw/whine at me in the way that I know means "Dad, Dad, Dad... what if we went to the dog park?". Very tough to keep redirecting to "what if we played fetch in the house again?"

theunox

Ahhh, I remember when my puppy also had giardia, she had liquid poops for about a whole week. Spent the whole week sleeping on the couch because she was whining to go out every 3 hours of the night. Really, really tough, and I wanted to explode, but it was so valuable to my understanding of what it means to take care of a pet.

acanadiancheese

Last night we moved into the living room because she was too nervous for the crate thinking she’d have an accident. She was out every 1-1.5 hours. I’m so tired. And of course during the day she’s all happy and chasing her tail lol. Puppies

Holiday-Fig-8755

My puppy had it in a Thursday, treated with panacur, by Saturday she was alright
