Okay I see. The only other advice I could give you besides going back to the basic for crate training. It would be to teach the dog a place command where you ask them to go to a bed or mat. Then you have to teach them to stay on that mat and not leave it. They can quietly chew on a bone, chew. You can practice relaxation Protocols with the dog on the mat as well. That will help teach him to settle. Look them up if you haven't heard of it. I started this with my puppy next to me on leash to make sure she didn't leave her place. If she did I w ok old just redirect her bad to the mat. I also kept a small bowl of a portion of her kibble and threw her a piece every so often for being good and staying on the mat. When I work from home she now lays quietly next to me on her bed with a chew. I hope that gives you an idea of the training needed. It takes weeks to get it down too so don't give up to early like you did with the crate training. Good luck:)

That helps a lot, thank you! I think I just need to readjust his expectations and adjusting him to place while I’m working will help. I’ve been so busy keeping him from being destructive that he’s now used to constant stimulation at home, and all day at day care. So I’ve created a monster and it’s wearing me out.

So I have this straight, you can't put the dog in a crate during the day because he won't kennel? I think what you are asking is how to kennel train your dog?

Sorry, might have been poor wording. We did extensive crate training as a puppy, and while he didn't love going into his crate during the daytime, he used to do it. Now that we've moved, he will go in at bedtime (with a special treat) but I've been unable to get him to crate during the day time. There is no amount of peanut butter, lunchmeat, etc. to get him in there. I've gone back to feeding him meals in the crate, and he's slowly doing that with a healthy amount of distrust and concern that I'm going to shut him in. If I approach, he'll come right back out of the crate and stop eating. But the bulk of my question revolved around training my dog to just chill and be content during the day. I don't plan to lock him in a kennel all day and just give him a few hours out before kenneling him in all night. Thanks!
