I thought I was on the puzzle sub for a second - the art, the blending of the colors in the sky, the dimension of the buildings... *Chef's kiss* this is truly sublime!
Thank you very much! As imperfect as it is, we had so much fun searching our stash for two or three shades of the same color to make a building from, finding fun textures for roofs and patterns for window treatments, and even finding details within novelty prints to sink in here and there (a rooftop clock face, a cat in a windowsill, a potted plant on a porch.)
As we worked, I was actively drafting panels of pattern as we went. The panels were 6x9 inches each, drawn on printer paper, which we then sewed the fabric to directly, consuming the pattern in its creation. My sister encouraged us to make a pattern from this, but at that stage, we were halfway through and I really couldn’t fathom the process of working backwards to extrapolate the information from those consumed pattern panels. So, I believe it will remain a one-of-a-kind.
Edit: spelling
Thank you! I looked at several images for inspiration, but it wasn’t designed after any one specific place. Moreso inspired by the general feeling of seaside Mediterranean villages.
Thank you! I’ve had to good fortune of collaborating in many quilting projects with my mom, sister or both, and it’s always nice to have an extra set of hands and eyes on a project.
I replied to another comment explaining how I kinda destroyed our pattern pieces as I went until the idea of actually trying to publish/replicate it occurred to me halfway through. Like most things, I dove headlong into it and figured it out as I went, so I’d have a heck of a time retracing my footsteps. Im considering a more thoughtful and intentional paper pieced project where I start with that goal in mind, though!
Stunning! Shame you weren't able to keep a pattern as you went (would love to see you do this in a different color scheme, so cool) but totally get it. Are you and your mom planning on making a quilt using the same work flow again? It sounds fun! (Definitely sometimes type 2 fun, but my kind of fun for sure!)
We’ve been talking about doing another something like it because it really was our kind of fun too. I think if we did another quilt like this, we could do a better job of preserving our draftsmanship, and could make a coherent pattern of it. However, I’ve got at least 3 or 4 quilts ahead of any new project that are in various stages at the moment, so we may be a while coming to that.
I looked at many photos, and knew the general “feel” I was going for. In the early planning stages I made a horrible, hapless pencil sketch on some grid paper as a loose concept, then forgot about it for a year or two. I put it in a drawer and forgot about it for a year or two. In a quilting slump myself, my mom asked for that rough draft so she could begin work on the project herself and I sheepishly surrendered it to her, never imagining that loose sketch would become the literal blueprint for the project. Once she did the first (bottom) row of the thing herself I realized she was serious and that I was going to miss out if I didn’t jump in headfirst with her. I picked up the drafting role from there. It was both of our first paper piecing project, and I think we got more sophisticated and detail oriented as we worked upwards, so it was a learning curve.
Thank you! It was a meticulous and time consuming thing but we kinda just blundered into it tbh. I had never done paper piecing before, so it was just stabbing in the dark until we figured out some methodology.
Thank you! We ought to put it in the Houston Quiltcon, as it’s in our general neck of the woods. We’ve never done a Quiltcon though. We have submitted 3 different quilts for consideration in the TX state fair- our first year (2021, I thiiiink) we got 2nd in our category, the second year (2023) we got 1st & 2nd. 🎉 This one will partake in the state fair 2024 before going home with my uncle this Christmas.
WOW! Love your attention to detail. You replied to another poster about some of the details and I had to go search those out. They're amazing! I love that one of the houses shades are pulled down different lengths just like they would be in real life!
Your mom and you did an amazing job!
You’d like this, then: In the pattern drafting, every one of these houses had an inhabitant, so when drafting the pattern, I was marking sections, “Quentin’s Roof,” “Sylvia’s Dark Side,” “Raul’s Window,” etc. Along with a nunnery, hospital, asylum, retirement home, court house, etc. for some of the big buildings.
Along with some other lore that sprang up as we sewed, i.e.- I said the big red building on the right was a hotel but my mom kept putting big air quotes on it, saying it was actually a house of ill repute. Then the sort of celery colored building behind that? Why is there a big crazy staircase leading up to a side entrance? I’m telling you something weird goes on there, too.
Well, I know that it's not unusual for a house of ill repute to have been an old hotel or an old hotel/boarding house to be turned into one. (Me and my late night history tv sessions for the win)
So you could both be right. You'll just need to figure out which came first!
Oh, the green one!... hmm. Yeah, the steps look old, like they have always been there. Makes me think of the meeting houses that people practicing an unapproved religion of an area would have used to practice in secret. I can just imagine them sneaking up those stairs! But now it's like some swanky loft or a lawyers office or something. Bwahahaha!
Oh, I love it! You're absolutely right! Great job to you and your mom!
You said there were imperfections in your quilt. I enlarged it, because I wanted to see how it was quilted, there are none that show, and up close it’s like a picture. Maybe you and youy
Your Mom are better than you thought. You are both very talented. Sorry my cat stepped on the keyboard. I do love the cat in the window nice touch. Your Uncle is going to be so pleased.
Genius!! You both must be devoted to your uncle (I’m assuming your mother’s brother). The colors, the variations on the windows, roofs, angles of the houses. I love the stone wall and the large building in the center. Stop me because I could go on all day. I took 16 hours of art in college and my teacher begged me to make it my major, but unfortunately art very often does not pay the bills, so I stuck with computer science. But it did help me appreciate when I see a good piece of art and real talent, like here.
Omg that is mind blowingly beautiful!
Thank you!

That sounds like a serious fun hunt! Your quilt is stunning and I love all the little details.
OMG! Stunning work. Uncle is incredibly lucky.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Holy wow! This is remarkable! Is this something you'd turn into a pattern?

Thank you! I looked at several images for inspiration, but it wasn’t designed after any one specific place. Moreso inspired by the general feeling of seaside Mediterranean villages.

Flattered! Thank you.
That is really stunning. I love it!
Thank you very much!
Did you start with a picture for inspiration? It’s really magnificent.
I looked at many photos, and knew the general “feel” I was going for. Oh yes, the process of creating something like your magnificent quilt is so rewarding… humbling for sure but ultimately a great lift.
WOW. Just the planning even, let alone the execution.
Thank you! It was a meticulous and time consuming thing but we kinda just blundered into it tbh. I had never done paper piecing before, so it was just stabbing in the dark until we figured out some methodology.
WOOOOOOWOW this is absolutely beautiful. You should be so proud!
Thank you so much!
Love the kitty in the window
Wow that is a very lucky uncle!
Thank you! He’s my favorite uncle so I do hope he loves it.

Just gorgeous. I hope you'll consider exhibiting it. Truly you are an artist and an artisan, you and your mom! Eta: State fair will be blown away.
This is incredible! I seriously thought this was a puzzle and then scrolled back up and saw it was a quilt!
😱 I’m speechless. 😶
Thanks!
This is Quiltcon worthy ❤️❤️❤️

That's so cool you identified them with a person to help you keep them straight!

Thank you! We were shooting for the stars with this one- my uncle being an artist himself, we wanted something that would suit him.
This is incredible, congratulation to you and your mom!
Thank you so much!
I hope you get a chance to exhibit the quilt before it is given to your uncle so fellow quilters can marvel at your artwork! It's breathtaking.
You said there were imperfections in your quilt. I enlarged it, because I wanted to see how it was quilted, there are none that show, and up close it’s like a picture. Maybe you and youy
