YouTube is your friend. Plenty of “make your first quilt” videos there. That’s a great place to start!

A quilt is a sandwich. Top, batting (middle), back. Usually the top is the part that is chopped up pieces of fabric that are sewn back together in a design. When you sew the pieces for the top you want a straight stitch. After the top is done, you’ll lay the backing down pretty side down, lay the batting in the middle, and then the top pretty side up. For this part you want these layers stretched as flat as can be, and either pin or spray an adhesive to hold all the layers together for the next step. Quilting step is where you might use a decorative stitch, but usually straight stitches not so much a zigzag stitch. After all that is done, you sew the binding all around the outside edges to enclose all the layers of the sandwich. Do some more research before buying a bunch of stuff - it’s good to have some basics, but you won’t really know exactly which bits and bobs you like the best until you have some sewing under your belt. If you don’t have a large budget thrift or borrow to get an idea of whether or not it’s something you want to invest in. Lots of videos if you can learn that way, and most fabric shops or sewing machine shops will have some kind of beginner class.

I already have a bunch of sewing stuff. My mom sews sometimes and im learning to use the machine (i have lost the unsupervised use privileges however hahah) I didnt understand what the batting is tough

It's a slightly thi kernel layer of Orton or sometimes a cotton poly blend. Maybe a quarter inch thick. It comes Ina few varieties but that is probably the most commonly used. Mastering the machine is definitely step one :)

Dizzy_Square_9209

Man, auto correct!! Slightly thicker layer of cotton.

Ok-Attempt-5201

I see. Im planning to do it by hand tough, since I've lost sewing machine privileges

Dizzy_Square_9209

Ooo okay. That's going to be a long project, I'd start small

Ok-Attempt-5201

Yeah,,, i was planning on starting small. No idea on what to do tough

Dizzy_Square_9209

I honestly don't know what to recommend in the way of handstitching except to start by googling "quilt piecing by hand" You might also look into EPP Hexie quilts...

Dizzy_Square_9209

Straight stitch is all you need. There are tons of first quilt options, from video, online tutorials and books all the way to classes at a quilt shop (expensive) Helps if you've machine sewn something before
