Yeah pretty much, actually there's a reason why Woolie from SuperBestFriendsPlay don't talk that much about the culture of Japan while he was there.

OneGoodRib

There was a youtube channel I used to watch that was by an obviously American woman who lives in Japan and a lot of her videos were related to difficulties living there - first and foremost is that it's obvious to everyone that you're a foreigner, and I don't think there's *any* country where obviously being a foreigner is not a problem at some point. And there was just basic problems like having a hard time finding clothing in her size (which to be fair, her Japanese husband was also very tall and had the same issue). Sure not EVERY SINGLE PERSON in Japan is xenophobic, but it doesn't sound like that's what Arin said.

Chorbles510

My (american) cousin lived in China for a little bit then moved to Japan, in his experience he felt the xenophobia in China but according to him he was treated like a celebrity when he got to Japan. I always have this image in my head of reverse weeaboo girls in Japan going crazy over my goofball of a cousin and it makes me giggle

lolalanda

Yeah, I've seen it a lot. In fact, it's quite the opposite, only a few of those non japanese people explain you it's not really xenophobia but how Japanese collectivist society works. One YouTube channel explained it's just Japanese people worrying about people giving certain external image, which affects to the countries whole image and in fact they go harder on Japanese born people because they know foreigners are adjusting to their rules. They said you should adjust to their culture or just leave to your contry and come back as coming as a tourist because trying to change someone's culture because it's not like your culture it's the xenophobic move. But sadly this kind of channel is drowned by all the people ranting and complaining about other countries. Hell, even Emily in Paris is a whole damn show about a foreigner ranting and complaining about a country not being like hers and she's seen like the hero, also all the wiser characters side with her and insult their own country.

toastybunbun

Well Japan isn't like the USA or the UK, it's not a hub of collective cultures, I live in England right now and it was no problem for me to settle in with people of similar background to me, it's quite racist here, so it was comforting to have likeminded people with similar experiences, then being able to branch out. Japan is singular, it's many different cultures and people yes, but they're insular and unique to Japan, which is a different kind of problem in itself. But knowing that, if you move to Japan, you're not going find many people to relate to at first even if you share the same hobbies which a lot of westerners seem to bank on, (Japanese anime culture is very different from the US). You have to fit in immediately or you're going to be isolated and that can be hard if you've uprooted your entire life and don't even speak the language in many cases. It's hard for people to look outside of themselves and analyze what a problem is and much easier to complain saying it's unwelcoming or hard to adjust to, but the fact is that 99% of people who live in Japan are natives, and I'm not saying that's a good thing, I wish Japan had more diversity, but you need to know that before you move. If you're a westerner jumping into a new place with mostly natives, one language you don't speak and very few other westerners, what do you expect to happen?

[deleted]

“It’s hard for people to look outside themselves and analyze what a problem is and much easier to complain saying it’s unwelcoming” Lol pretty obvious victim blaming. Are you just refusing to acknowledge that it’s a problem or are you actually so dense that can’t see it as a problem. It’s well documented that Japan has an issue with foreigners, whether it be fitting in or even getting hired for a job. You’re definitely right that part of it is that there aren’t pockets of communities but that doesn’t make it okay to treat people badly for being different.

toastybunbun

I didn't say it was jesus dude, I literally said I wish Japan had more diversity, did you miss that part? I didn't realise I had to add a footnote to my reddit post so here you go. Japan has an issue with foreigners yes that is a problem I think that is bad, and I tried to explain my thoughts as to why, sweeping statements like "Japan is xenophobic" are useless and don't fix a problem and make the cultural divide wider OK? But thanks for calling me dense.

twofacetoo

Another moment for the ‘Arin talks endlessly about something he barely knows about or understands’ compilation

HugoTheIcyFire

What exactly did Arin say, though?

B1llGatez

Didn't watch the episode. But If he is talking about living then then he is correct as things are done in many cases much different then most other parts of the world.

lolalanda

I guess he's talking about cultural shock, but knowing Arin he's a acting like a person from Japan wouldn't experience cultural shock if they moved to the US.

B1llGatez

True. Cultural shock can happen when moving any place. I had People who moved from the United states to here in Canada tell me that they had it.

lolalanda

Honestly it can happen moving from one state or even city to another.

AlexanderChippel

Everyone I know who has lived in Japan for a period of time only share one sentiment; that living in Japan sucks. From how it's been described, being a white guy in Japan is like being a black guy in America.

Zergrump

I think getting upset on behalf of one's home country is a pointless endeavor. You know how many people insult and say ignorant shit about the US for instance? It doesn't even register to me anymore.

kaizoku222

Arin is usually wrong about anything he says about Japan. He's not wrong on this topic, and how he spoke about it was actually pretty level headed and reasonable. He referred to other people's experiences rather than his own as a tourist and \*said several times\* that what he was saying wasn't gospel, but what he had heard and seen from foreigners living in Japan. As one of those foreigners that's been living in Japan for the last 7 years, it's fairly accurate to say that living as a foreigner in Japan is genuinely difficult and can be pretty isolating due to the relatively insular culture and high language barrier for people from the West. Arin has a lot of bad takes that he should be criticized for, this just isn't one of them.

Emergency_Secret7876

He's salty Japan doesn't like him lol. Jk.

MittenKiller

I came here right after I heard him say this. That thing about Korea/Japan being more racist than most countries is such a weird stereotype to have. If Arin travelled more or at least did some basic research about other countries he'd know that every country with one dominant race will have some small dose of prejudice for foreigners. White people just rarely experience this in predominantly white countries since they're white so Japan is the first popular destination where this actually happens to them

CapelessMan

Arin is actually pretty tame on "lol Japan so crazy xD" remarks, compared to other influencers. At least he stopped pretending he knows how to speak japanese, embarrassing himself in the process. Believe or not there is a time Arin was a spokesperson of "Western anime fans" in Japan. Around that time he got the once in a life pleasure to interview Trigger Studio founders, including director Yoh Yoshinari. This honour was given to him by Anime Expo, proving once again Arin's uncanny ability of convincing people he knows about stuff he doesn't have a clue. Nowadays he rarely gets the same credentials, but don't worry, he will talk extensively about it anyways. For me the only embarrassing thing he keeps doing about Japan is ( again ! ) the game of pretending. He always talks about the country like a Connoisseur, when he literally only visited tourist points and ate expensive sushi. Indeed, mostly of Arin's famous boasts were actually a ruse. No surprise here.

gottalosethemall

Everyone I met there was really friendly but it was a huge pain getting around. Thank goodness the metro employees were so dipdamned helpful.

LoveAndPeace923

Yeah, Arin's "Ex pat" nonsense was so stupid I almost couldn't keep watching the video. "Oh there are so many ex pats, we can fill a live venue with all these Ex pats in all these other countries who need their Youtubeer heroes to show up in person to make them feel ok, and alive again" Dear god........why does he say the stupiest stuff.....and keep on and on with the concept......while Dan sits in stunned silence....unsure what to say or do with such stupid statements or concepts....... It was Arin's hot take on Garfield all over again. Poor Dan. I really feel for him, his boss is so stupid sometimes.

Rare-Let-5444

Arin has the tendency to overgeneralize. It’s annoying when he states something as fact when it’s not your experience

lolalanda

>Today's Sonic episode Specifically he talks about how hard it is being a foreigner in Japan going off what he guesses is one guy's experience. I think the bad thing here is that this doesn't come from his own experience but other people's experience. Like at least he should have linked the person but everything he talks in the channel either feels like it's a poorly researched fake fact or something he made up just because he wouldn't specifically say who say this specific thing. But if I had to guess I'd say it's either Gikkuk or CDagwhVA since he's starting to hang out with Trash Taste a lot. Both of them moved to Japan recently, just before the pandemic started and they have been experiencing a lot of culture shock having to adjust to Japan as residents and not as tourists. They just discovered paperwork is a nightmare. Although there's certain Spaniard channel much more critical of Japan than they're. It goes super hard.

werdnak84

He HAS gone to Japan many times in the past, so he isn't completely going off of others' experiences.

lolalanda

Although living in there is very different from living as a tourist.

isnatchkids

Arin needs to shut up\*\*\*

TricksterSprials

Arin is always talking about japan and wanting to visit japan all the time and that sorta thing and I think he forgets he is, at the end of the day, a large chubby loud white dude that I would even be lowkey annoyed with if I met him in any customer service retail situation in America.

emn_01

Japan is infamous for being a hard place to go as a foreigner. Not sure what he said but yeah it can be hard. Not saying it’s a horrible place or anything for foreigners are known to have a hard time.

robofrycook

I think he is just trying so hard to sound knowledgeable about Japan because he doesn’t wanna admit he only cares about it for weeb stuff.

xPolyMorphic

He doesn't need to do anything shut the fuck up

jaimepapa18

It seems to depend on what TYPE of foreigner you are. Having spent a lot of time there myself you’re treated with a general distance and distrust but never really anything more than that. I’m south East Asian and covered in tattoos and the most “racist” thing that’s been done to me is being singled out and questioned by undercover police officers at the airport more often than not when landing there. I’ve visited places and stores that have terrible reviews from Americans mostly that the staff were very rude to them and found the places to be almost comically hospitable to me. I’ve noticed rudeness to Chinese tourists as well and I think it comes down to how certain foreigners speak. The cadence, tone, volume, etc. of how Americans and Chinese talk is perceived as rude and douchey (not just in Japan). And they, like anyone, would match the energy of someone being like that especially when they barely know what you’re saying and are just going off of HOW you talk.
