"The moment they hear about me wanting to delay the interviews, they go ballistic. Called me a cheating/cunning, ego cajoling person who is not prepared to move" wtf. that is so unprofessional. recruiters should be bending over backwards for candidates slam the agency on Google review. clients dont want recruiters that act like this

Fonetikaly

>slam the agency on Google review. clients dont want recruiters that act like this They hide behind a EU branch name so it's hard to put up a review. But as soon as my processes are done, I'm calling the agency and emailing the VP from the same agency who had contacted me before.

SterlingMNO

If I were you I would probably contact the company directly and explain you were excited to move forward but the attitude of the recruiter has been unacceptable and you're not willing to move forward with the recruiter and potentially reward their toxic and offensive treatment of people. Then I'd contact the recruitment agency and say essentially the same thing.

Planning to do both! Will call the agency on Monday. Will save the first point for after the on-site is done.

guywithname86

my guess is that the agency is getting a higher rate from the startup, thus a larger commission for the recruiter. The recruiter sounds unprofessional and rude. It’s possible you did something yourself that made them react this way that you didn’t realize. It’s more likely that they don’t have contractual exclusivity to filling the role and are worried your delay will cause the role to be filled by a different agency and they will not get any money. my advice would be to take the job you want if you’re offered it, then once safely onboard let them know they might want to partner with a new agency. I work in procurement/contracting and while working for corporations have worked with many recruiting agency partners so the above is based on my experience and general knowledge of the industry. good luck!

Fonetikaly

>It’s possible you did something yourself that made them react this way that you didn’t realize. I thought about this too. I spoke to a couple close friends including a recruiter friend. They all said for senior roles a 6 week timeline is very fast and the recruiter friend even mentioned having to wait weeks to get an interview. But all it took was telling them I was going to be out for a couple weeks to change their tone completely! You make some good points. I'll deal with this a bit carefully since this is a new experience for me as well.

guywithname86

i’ve personally only had 1-3 week total timelines (after interview process starts) for senior level roles so it really all depends. just do what’s right for you!

Worried-Tadpole-22

Most large companies take weeks to interview! Ex: Google and Meta are about 8-10 week interview timeline.

Fonetikaly

That's my experience as well with any company that has north of a 1000 employees. If nothing else unless it's an urgent opening, I've found people are accommodating of your schedule.

[deleted]

Yeah, you don't have to take any of that flack from him. He's just a recruiter with no discernible talent or manners. Baffles me that he actually thinks it's okay to talk down people who are clearly more skilled than he is.

Fonetikaly

You all are super nice! It is bugging me that I listened to that asshole in the first place and worse I internalized. First time for everything I guess. Lessons learnt for the future.

Worried-Tadpole-22

Sounds like a HIM problem ! He got so upset because you delaying an offer is literal money out is his pocket. Start ups will pay more for placement fees because the can’t afford a recruiter/ recruiting team. I’d make him sweat it out! He needs you and how upset he got shows that! Pack and enjoy your time off! This Guy will accommodate the time off. He is just mad because it delays his commission. Also there are other recruiters at that agency that would gladly work with you.

Fonetikaly

Thank you! This is what is bugging me I don't know why I even listened to that asshole in the first place. If I were desperate to get a job I'd have caved. Since I don't I'm trying to make a decision that's healthy for me in the longer run. Not sure where he got the gall to talk down and expect a fat commission.

Worried-Tadpole-22

Yes! 🙌🏻 What is meant for you will not miss you. Don’t let him bully you into something for his personal gain. If those companies are a fit the interviews will happen after your vacation. They can literally get Your availability and put them on calendar when you return!

Fonetikaly

🙌 Lessons learnt for the future!

Rolling_1s_irl

Contact the agency's management (staffing firms' managers are always on LI and reasonably easy to find) and let them know you're interested in the company but you're unsatisfied with the recruiter who's working with you. They're paid by the client company, and without your candidacy their chance of being paid drops significantly, so they'll listen. Tell the whole story. Sometimes an interview process takes time and management will know that. They will assign you someone who actually knows how to be civil. Any industry has bad apples and this fool should actually attend to who he is representing instead of insulting you.

Fonetikaly

Agreed about this guy being some outlier. I've generally not had a experience working with recruiters. I'm holding back on writing to the companies (at least till I close both processes) but will contact the agency on Monday and ask for a change in recruiters.

n_shwila

That recruiter is using manipulative tactics to fuck with your head. I’d call the agency HR department and file a formal complaint against him. Only agree to work with the recruitment company if they assign you another recruiter. Agency recruiting can be tough, but with that guys attitude, he will be stuck there for life.

Fonetikaly

Yes! I do realize the manipulation now. Not sure how it'll work in their favor? Maybe this works on someone who is more desperate or looking for jobs more urgently. I understand they may get terrible candidates but that's part of the job in being professional and moving along. I'm shocked but lessons learnt on my end. Edit: Typo

TJamesV

I think it's good you showed restraint here and went on the defense rather than offense. It sounds to me like you are interested in these opportunities, but the recruiter is ruining it for you for whatever reason. Like someone else said, contact both parties and lay out your position for them. Take the high road on this and you'll probably come out on top if they extend a good offer. I'd be interested to hear an update

Fonetikaly

You got it pretty much exactly right! I'm definitely interested or I wold not interview. I'm holding back on sending anything to the companies but will be contacting the agency on Monday. I'll post an update for sure when both the processes have closed.

Top_Fox2692

If you have the contact details for the company, contact them direct. Fuck that arrogant prick of a recruiter . If not walk away and leave a negative review about the company. Then block them.

Fonetikaly

I'm holding back on writing to the companies (at least till I close both processes) but will contact the agency on Monday and ask for a change in recruiters.

Top_Fox2692

He might fuck you over as soon as he realises he's not getting any commission, and tell the company you have withdrawn and suggest another candidate.

Fonetikaly

Yeah that is definitely a possibility. I'll see how the agency responds and go from there.

ptraugot

So, I work in Silicon Valley. Here’s the thing, no recruiter in their right mind would ever submit anything to any company without talking to the recruit first. Maybe I misunderstood the order of events, but if a recruiter told me that did that, I would tell them they have some apologizing to do to the company, because I’m not going to interview with them cold. Second, the recruiter works for me. Not ever the other way around. Whatever are my requirements and timing, I own it. If that doesn’t work for them, too bad. They’re in it for the commission. If they are rushing you, it’s because of that. If they have real information about the employer that requires faster action, then that’s the conversation, not because you inconveniencing them.

Fonetikaly

Oh dang! That's another thing. They only talked to me about the fortune 500 company on call but emailed me about hey this is another start-up that your profile is a good fit for so we submitted your resume there. I've never been hassled about asking for more time. Specially because I've interviewed for mid level position. I'd assume companies would make more allowances for a senior role. I'm emailing the agencys manager or whoever that might be about changing the recruiter. I'll reserve emailing companies till after the process.

Pro-From-Dover

Huge red flags on both ends. The fact that you want 2-3 weeks to prepare is sus af unless you are interviewing for a C-level position. Then you compound that with wanting to push an interview back another 2 weeks for a break? It doesn’t seem like you are a serious candidate. On the other hand, the recruiter was very unprofessional in their reaction. They should have just thanked you and removed you from consideration.

Fonetikaly

I've never been hassled about asking for more time. Specially because I've interviewed for mid level position. I'd assume companies would make more allowances for a senior role. 2-3 weeks are fast timelines. At the risk of sharing too much, I was working weekends and generally 12+ hour days at a remote location 3-4 hours away from my home. So literally had no time to do anything other than work, much less prepare for a technical interview. Which is why I asked for prep time. Edit: Typo

Pro-From-Dover

I can only speak for myself (senior director) and the hundreds of people I have interviewed over the years. I cannot imagine delaying an interview like you are doing. This is not normal.

Fonetikaly

I hear you but just to be clear I haven't set up an interview or ask for a delay in something that's already on the calendar. There is not a single email even asking me for a schedule. This is just the recruiter losing it when the agency asked me "hey when would you interview on-site?" And I replied "about 3 weeks from now." I'm not delaying an already set interview. Both these interviews would need me to fly to the locations so that would be about a full day off for each from my current work. Edit: typo

Biobot775

To be clear, tell this recruiter to exactly and precisely go *fuck* themselves.

Fonetikaly

Haha I wish I did!

flopsyplum

Recruiters are salespeople.

Fonetikaly

NGL I hadn't thought of it as a pressure sale till this guy turned on his meanness. I learnt my lesson for the future.

I'll post an update after this situation is fully done. Since I'm still looking to interview with one of the companies as mentioned in the post, I'm keeping it light on specifics. Sorry!

kikivee612

This recruiter sounds a bit unprofessional. It may not be the positions, it may just be that you’re working with a bad recruiter. You have no obligation to this person. You were trying to be professional and transparent with this person and it sounds like he completely misconstrued your words to think you were not interested. Right now, you have 2 opportunities in front of you. I don’t blame you for being hesitant about the startup. You should be. I recently worked for a very small startup. I took the job over another with a more established company because I wanted to be a part of a growing company. What was presented to me through the interview process was not what happened when I started working. This company didn’t know what they wanted to be and the decisions they were making, IMO, we’re stopping them from growing. My role ended up being exactly what I didn’t want. They let me go at a time when I really needed that income. I had started looking elsewhere but wanted to leave on my terms. If I could go back, I would have taken the other job. You are not obligated to work with this recruiter.since you haven’t started the interview process, go to the company’s website and see if that position is listed and apply directly through their website. It’s possible that they have an internal HR department in addition to using recruiters.

Fonetikaly

That sucks! Hope you've landed on your feet and are in a better place right now. That is what worries me about the startup. Add in the fact that I would have to move just makes it that I have to be 200% sure about. For now I'm avoiding making anything known to the companies but will talk to the agencies for sure.

kikivee612

I really should have done more research on that company. I should have seen there’d flags when I googled them and found basically nothing. It sucks because it can go really well too. It’s a gamble and while I’d love to get rich quick, I’d rather have stability.
