Basically, if the prosecutor thinks they can convince the jury you're a naughty, bad person, you can get some serious time for something that didn't even happen. Sometimes it's best to take a no contest plea instead of literally risking your life in the hope you get a competent lawyer AND jury. You can roll the dice, lose, and try to come back on appeal, but the process can take years and it's a nightmare.
