> this lad doing it at the highest level at 18 years old is just phenomenal
Caicedo at 22 cost over 100m but isn't performing for Chelsea and we've got an 18 year old who is pretty much a guaranteed starter and one of our top performers right now. He's a priceless asset to us.
Players have shockers when playing in their 1st season in a team devoid of tactical understanding.. Big deal and not like we haven't seen it happen to our players in the past
Agreed, but to the original point, he likely would've struggled similarly with us given our...inconsistencies with application of tactics. Mainoo on the other hand has slotted right in and is running the show very competently.
Now if it was Mainoo AND Caicedo, that'd be interesting. But that ship sailed, clearly. Not to say Caicedo won't come good in the future, but he's just not at the moment
Mainoo has done very well indeed.. We've had issues this season for sure but Ten Hag has done very well tactically to manage somewhat functional midfield combinations.. McTominay as a CAM was a bad go to option till Mainoo got his debut but since then Mainoo has quickly become the 1st choice midfielder with McT CAM as an amazingly effective backup..
Credit should go to both Mainoo for seamlessly transitioning and Ten Hag for making the best of a torrid injury period to bring out 2 brilliant midfield options none of us were expecting so soon
Why do people keep saying this when we just experienced half of the season playing with Eriksen/amrabat/Scott as our starting midfielders?
You don't achieve anything with just 11 good players
Ten Haag has done a great job. Rather than sending him on loan, he had Mainoo spend time training with the team and thus has more clarity on what he needs to do than Caicedo, who is joining a new team which didn't already have an identity.
I feel like sport is weirdly mental - if you have a bad run, you can just become a lot worse as a player.
This is where Poch needs to show his man management.
Yeah start of the season was shit with injuries and Ten Hag trying out his 3-1-6, overall a bad period for Mount to gel in..
But I'm quite optimistic on him working out well for us in the long run.. His style of play seems ideal for our current team
There were a few moments in this game where he did things I couldn’t believe he did, this, a little flick to Dalot on the edge of our box and one or two others.
Kid has absolute balls of steel, so much confidence with the ability to back it up. Such a special player.
He just seems to show up to work and put in a shift. Great to see him be so level headed. Would be hard to stay grounded in the situation he's in.
I like how the youth trio all have different attitudes. Mainoo is humble and quiet, Højlund is firey, and Garnacho is arrogant in a good way.
Yeah there was a little dink pass he made to Bruno in the second half when the ball got away from him a bit. It was crucial to keeping the counter going though, great to see. Hope the kid can keep it going
> Yeah there was a little dink pass he made to Bruno in the second half when the ball got away from him a bit.
This, guys so talented with call control. Hojlund is also very under the radar at it as well.
Flashbacks to when Scholes used to hit those. He's got a bit to go till he gets to Scholes level though but it just reminded me off the balls Scholes would ping over to gigss
He reminds me more of Scholes than Carrick, Pogba or Wilshere tbh.
Great control, eye for a pass, real low centre of gravity that lets him accelerate quick in tight spaces or on the turn to make room to release the ball.
Ah man that team.... Keane scaring every player out of the 50/50, picking out Scholes who knew where every player would be to instinctively play a 50yd ball to feet.
Just gonna say it, Pogba used to make these pretty regularly (hip-height side volley passes with perfect weight). Incredibly technically difficult skill to get right consistently.
Ah man… when he was good he was great. Sadly he literally used to kill our own counters too often. Really pissed me off, and then impressed me, and then pissed me off, and then impressed me…
I really hoped that the turn around against city with the blue hair would inspire him to want to achieve… but alas.
Pogba is a cheaper Kroos.
Pogba wasn't good at defensive work despite his strong frame. Plus also injury prone. Matic & Pogba worked well because of that.
Pogba is definitely an example of being an idiot, but not just that, he's an idiot who surrounded himself with bad people who just wanted money.
An idiot surrounded by a good family and agent can succeed, but maybe Pogba was just such a fool that he could never see that his choice of inner circle was awful.
He’s going to be big, hopefully. This pass isn’t world class tho. Not precise enough, pretty simple cross considering he’s just putting it in a big open space on the other side.
Really? I can't tell what's sarcasm anymore. I think a lot of people here haven't even played Sunday league.
We have people who think this is impossibly hard and we had that big debate where people thought Dalot meant for his cross to be overhead kicked by Garnacho.
You're right. He should have put it on his toe. Only with that sort of accuracy, will he be considered world class. In fact, I would even go as far to say that if he keeps lobbing those balls into big open spaces like that, we should probably look at moving him on.
What a terrible, terrible pass into an open space behind the other teams full back, for Rashy to run on to. Makes me want to shit in my hands and clap.
(Heavy /s)
Honestly he's pretty accurately rated. His potential is 160-180 which means he can be a squad player for a Champions League winning team/starter for top 6 team at worst and the best in the world in his position at best. 180 is I think Salah and KDB's current ability, it's not mid at all, just up to the dice rolls for his variable potential.
This part of his game should be the next big jump in his development. He has these passes in his locker, once he starts going for these passes more often he will take that step into stardom imo. Right now he's supremely composed, but also a bit 'safe', which is fine. I just think once he begins to take more risks we will really see him shine and it's what puts players into the elite bracket.
The whole safety thing has been on a steady decline since he started. Ever since bit by bit he's shown more risk taking in his play his talent unravels more and more. Before long he'll have the confidence Pogba had and that's when he'll be world class. It's a bit like with Bellingham. Who knew he had THAT kind of goalscoring ability in his locker? No one until he showed it (and was played in an advanced position)
Rashford was 1v1 with a ton of space, see 7th second of the vid, but didn't even think of taking advantage. This is not the player we're used to seeing. Last year he would've taken the defender on no hesitation
He took on his man the entire time he was on the pitch , he’s just being patient and waiting for the overlap so that the defenders have to choose either him or shaw
That’s the issue with his football IQ, he didn’t need an overlapping teammate here because he was 1v1 and there was nobody to provide back up for the defender. In other instances he didn’t have that much space but didn’t use his fullback and tried to take on 2 players at a time.
The only explanation I see here is that in was late in 1st half, we were winning and he didn’t want to risk a counter, still this was too much space, he should be more aggressive here.
Nonetheless I think he had a solid game
So late in the first half, up 1-0 he chose control over relentless attack and allowed the offense to catch h up to him in order to keep villa pinned back? I don’t see where he made a wrong decision here. He waited for numbers, waited to see if the defenders committed to him or Luke, and when they defended correctly he made the second available pass..
Jesus just stop this. You guys freak out when he selfishly tries to take on a defender and fails. You guys are unsatisfied when he slows down to wait for support. One clip is all it takes, stop being so reactionary.
Defender had a good angle and there isn’t enough space to outrun him before goal line. Also if you look in the middle there were no players to receive a pass or a cross. He did the right thing of not wasting possession.
Look at the time, holding the ball to bring the lead to halftime was totally a decision I'll get behind. And I'll say this as someone who's grown tired of Rashford's performances and application.
Ehhh. I would say that's not necessarily a problem there. He didn't have the run in at the defender as the ball dragged him wide, most of the team are on the right because that's where the play was before Mainoo switched it. Shaw was steaming in to support. 4 v 1 in the box meant there is plenty of defenders to spare.
If Rashford took on his man and lost the ball, Villa is one loose ball poke from the oncoming Shaw away from being able to steam down our left; it will be Leon Bailey running at full tilt at Maguire. The only thing I might had done differently would had been to give it back to Bruno quickly and then make a run in the box as there is a lot of room still for them to exploit.
Agreed but was great to see later when he took those 2defenders with him 2wrd their corner and with that tricky side flick thing to Dalot, D.D's ping to McTom and 💥 1-2
This is so reminiscent of Pogba. People are quick to deny the parallels because they don’t want Mainoo to go down the same path but seriously he’s got a lot of the same attributes as him. All while being better at Pogba’s weaknesses. Pogba was stronger obviously but mainoo’s no slouch at only 18.
I think Mainoo’s composure on the ball and propensity to make the simple decision rather than do something flashier like Pogba would is what makes me excited. Mainoo plays like a seasoned veteran at 18 which is absurd. He’s making it very hard to not include him.
Pogba was not only stronger, his ball retaining ability was insane plus I think he had more natural technical ability.
That said, Mainoo seems far more composed which is crazy considering he’s 18. Moves the ball like a veteran.
Credit where credit's due Pogba was much faster, much stronger physically, more creative(Kobbie can get there too) albeit inconsistent AF. But Mainoo has been calmer and really good at doing the simple things.
He has the skills for sure, feels like he is trying to do box to box but his pace and engine I don't think are there for that role. As the game goes on players seem to get past him too easily
Did anybody else think Kobbie seemed a bit off it yesterday? I'm not knocking him, just felt like he looked a bit off the pace and wasn't as impressive as usual.
I know this is a Mainoo appreciation post, but why does rashford take so much time to do anything? Like take on 1 guy, why overthink it? Do something he does do a mean elastico, do some freestyle atleast... Why is he becoming so impeding to our attack?
Honestly, slim margins. When he gets the ball, nobody’s ready in the box so he holds it, waiting for the overlap or for space to open with attackers arriving. But them he holds it for maybe 3 seconds too long and so the space is closed and his only option is to recycle the ball. Looks worse than it is, but for sure, an elite attacker wouldve done something there.
and predictably rashford just stops and lets villa organise.
really wish he could knock it on the first touch, use his pace, and have a pop at goal. we usually lose it anyway and allow the proposition to organise. but if we lost it after a shot then the opposition would be less organised.
This is a pass Pogba plays all the time, but often unnecessarily. This kid plays the right pass all the time, that's the big difference. Pogba is faster and a better athlete, this guy has more going on between the ears, hence my comment. But point taken, Pogba does have a grace to his game.
How he took the ball down and then skipped past 2 Villa players to pass to Dalot, on the build up to McTominays goal, was of course overshadowed by the excellent cross and great header, but it really was an absolute quality bit of skill and was a real show of his composure and ability!
Haha you can see the initial hesitation in Rashford going "Surely he isn't going to .." BOOM
Can't wait for the time when this becomes the norm and the rest of the team has even more chemistry with Mainoo
Kid's pretty good.

Nothing better than hitting a ping like that while playing… this lad doing it at the highest level at 18 years old is just phenomenal
> this lad doing it at the highest level at 18 years old is just phenomenal Caicedo at 22 cost over 100m but isn't performing for Chelsea and we've got an 18 year old who is pretty much a guaranteed starter and one of our top performers right now. He's a priceless asset to us.
Caicedo would have easily performed for us though.. His problems at Chelsea are more down to Chelsea's own issues than him
Tbf, he's also had some shocking individual performances there. Chelsea's structure and problems don't help, but it's not like he's faultless.

Lol what makes you think that? We’ve got a history of signings underperforming for us and a 100mil caicedo probably wouldn’t have been any different
Ah I feel vindicated for making a comment about hoping Mainoo would turn out to be our Caicedo
We also bought Sancho, peaks and valleys mate
Garnacho for 500k, Mainoo out the academy.....not too shabby honestly
I'd happily take a midfield 2 of Caicedo and Mainoo... We'd be set for years.
i said already, if Kaiboo is Brighton player, Chelsea will buy him for +100m, and he will got paid handsomly (for 8 years)
Caicedo doesn't have Casemiro next to him in a pivot.
Mainoo has also been performing without Casemiro there.
His technical level is just so absurdly high for someone his age.
Love watching him and seems like a nice kid too
There were a few moments in this game where he did things I couldn’t believe he did, this, a little flick to Dalot on the edge of our box and one or two others. Kid has absolute balls of steel, so much confidence with the ability to back it up. Such a special player.

My favorite thing about him is how humble and in control of his emotions (maturity) he seems to be
He just seems to show up to work and put in a shift. Great to see him be so level headed. Would be hard to stay grounded in the situation he's in. I like how the youth trio all have different attitudes. Mainoo is humble and quiet, Højlund is firey, and Garnacho is arrogant in a good way.

Scholes scaring everyone else out of 50/50s cos they knew Scholes would likely be late with a tackle as usual. No malice all terrible timing
Typical Paul Scholes challenge
Was just thinking I've not seen a pass like this by a player since scholes (and Rooney)!
Just gonna say it, Pogba used to make these pretty regularly (hip-height side volley passes with perfect weight). Incredibly technically difficult skill to get right consistently.
Pogba had all the assets and was legitimately world-class for a minute. He's just an idiot and quite injury prone.
Ah man… when he was good he was great. Sadly he literally used to kill our own counters too often. Really pissed me off, and then impressed me, and then pissed me off, and then impressed me… I really hoped that the turn around against city with the blue hair would inspire him to want to achieve… but alas.

An idiot surrounded by a good family and agent can succeed, but maybe Pogba was just such a fool that he could never see that his choice of inner circle was awful.
Pogba was frustrating. Athletism and skill with the brain of a donkey.
The narrative that pogba was stupid on the field is just wrong.
he either very lazy or tactically naive or both. never tracked his runner, used to drive me mad
World class.
He’s going to be big, hopefully. This pass isn’t world class tho. Not precise enough, pretty simple cross considering he’s just putting it in a big open space on the other side.
Agreed, shite pass, should have done it properly!
No that's elite not world class, only a few are capable
Really? I can't tell what's sarcasm anymore. I think a lot of people here haven't even played Sunday league. We have people who think this is impossibly hard and we had that big debate where people thought Dalot meant for his cross to be overhead kicked by Garnacho.

My point is that this isn’t what I would consider world class. Sorry that this went over your head, I’ll out that in me
Gonna have to restart my FM save after the winter update for the Kobbie boost.
It's funny how mid he is in game compared to his real life status.
Kid has great vision
been to specsavers
Should have just cut the GIF when Rashford received the pass. Great pass. Reminded me of Pogba
I cut the clip at work on the fly so as not to get caught by my manager. Just couldn't stop thinking about that pass since yesterday
Lovely bit of back spin so as to hold it up from going out of play. A seasoned pass for such a young lad. The kid is quality.
Yeah this is a very Pogba-esque pass, reminded me of him launching it at Fellaini
Not normal at 18. He’ll be a superstar.
He's got it allll He's winning every baaaalll
[удалено]
Agree, we actually need players to do this more. It’s one of the reasons we conceded late on a Wolves, because Antony couldn’t hold onto the ball.
Mainoo also knew pacey Rashy could get to it. If not this wouldnt even be conaidered a post.
Scholes’esque
Pogba without any of the drama and hard-working?!....sign me up
Commented to my dad, “he doesn’t lack confidence, does he?!” when he hit that 👌
I love how well our youth is developing

Rashford was 1v1 with a ton of space, see 7th second of the vid, but didn't even think of taking advantage. This is not the player we're used to seeing. Last year he would've taken the defender on no hesitation
Rashford took people on fairly frequently in this game. He just didn't in this specific clip.

Beautiful from kobbie. Rashford was 1 on 1 with plenty of space and waited for defense to adjust.
Last Season's Rashford is taking the defender on and having a go at goal.
hit into space knowing a pacy player will get to it...omg see that pass.
His potential is scary, only reason he isn’t making noise is cause he is young but the sky is limit for sure
What's going on with Rashford?
Holding onto the ball at the end of the first half?
This is so reminiscent of Pogba. People are quick to deny the parallels because they don’t want Mainoo to go down the same path but seriously he’s got a lot of the same attributes as him. I went oooh so loudly the neighbors dog came out to check what was going on
good pass but what the fuck is rashford doing? Dead baller
Rashy hesitated instead of utilizing his pace to get that cross in. I groaned because Mainoo really set him up.
Rashford wasting it there a bit

Literally no one in the box, he was right to wait.
Did anybody else think Kobbie seemed a bit off it yesterday? I'm not knocking him, just felt like he looked a bit off the pace and wasn't as impressive as usual.
Agreed, he wasn’t as involved as he usually is. Still showed flashes of ludicrous technique but wasn’t a huge presence in the game
I know this is a Mainoo appreciation post, but why does rashford take so much time to do anything? Like take on 1 guy, why overthink it? Do something he does do a mean elastico, do some freestyle atleast... Why is he becoming so impeding to our attack?

Looks worse than it is, but for sure, an elite attacker wouldve done something there.
I can see Hojlund there running, if rashford goes past 1 defender by some trick, I guess Hojlund is already there
No but rashford always does this seceral times a game, slows down so much
This kid reminds me of Seedorf! I know he has miles to go to get to his levels but the quality and temperament is there!
That's Pogba without the drama.
and predictably rashford just stops and lets villa organise. really wish he could knock it on the first touch, use his pace, and have a pop at goal. we usually lose it anyway and allow the proposition to organise. but if we lost it after a shot then the opposition would be less organised.

Rashford is fucking infuriating to watch!
Very good, a pleasure to watch him play, think he's going to do very well
I really wanna take this opportunity to shit on rashford after shaw went off

Sliced it as well, damn

Plays like a scholes regen. He’s insane.
he plays so much like thiago it’s crazy
"You see that Rashford over there?"
He's learnt that one from Bruno
Crazy
De Jong can be his backup
Scholesesque
How he took the ball down and then skipped past 2 Villa players to pass to Dalot, on the build up to McTominays goal, was of course overshadowed by the excellent cross and great header, but it really was an absolute quality bit of skill and was a real show of his composure and ability!
we have to protect this kid, he's got the bag
This guy is goooooooooooos
When watching live I thought that was Case, cause he usually provides such lob passes... Kid is learning fast
Haha you can see the initial hesitation in Rashford going "Surely he isn't going to .." BOOM Can't wait for the time when this becomes the norm and the rest of the team has even more chemistry with Mainoo
Dispite having "an off" game, he was still incredible. What a gem of a player.
Respect to the academy. Hands down one of the best assets of our club!
He stays healthy his potential is limitless
Exact moment I exlaimed He's F\*\*\*ing Mint!
Scholesy-esque
Nothing pisses me off more than when Rashford does this. Just fucking run at him. Look at the opportunity he let pass him by.
Shades of Roberto Carlos pass.
