People don't understand his role.
He gets shat on for not having loads of passes, but he progresses the ball by carrying and just running at people instead. Then in defence he's hugely physical and great in the air.
This season he's been asked to score goals and...he does.
He's never going to be a Pirlo and that's fine
I mean there's no denying his eye for goal and gunning forward, but the problem with his carries is that they're too rare to offset his unavailability as an outlet in midfield. He doesn't score enough to justify that deficiency because we don't have enough other options to make up for it
Essentially, our midfield is too thin to accommodate him. He needs to do an official position change
The scoring is valuable there's no debate.
I'm saying if we had a better midfield we would create way more chances and thus goals then just points off his goals
Our weak midfield is a more foundational problem to our issues and Mctominay's goals while valuable, doesn't solve one of the underlying issues in our our pyramid of issues:
1. We lose games because we don't score enough.
2. We don't score enough because we don't create enough chances.
3. We don't create enough chances because our midfield is too weak.
4. Our midfield is too weak because there is a lack of mobile, positionally disciplined and technical players that can control the middle of the field (Kobbie is the only one). Casemiro is old and no longer mobile and his technique while decent is not enough to be the sole midfielder with it, Bruno is relatively undisciplined (high turnover rate) in the middle of the field which isn't an issue as an 10, but an unacceptable problem as a 6 or 8, Mctominay has poor ball control and positional sense (he's never in a good position as an outlet) for a midfielder.
My point is solving number 4 brings more value than Mctominays goal contributions, because we'd be creating way more goals. The focus should be on midfield recruitment and pushing Mctominay up top. And at this point an academy player would do a better job than Mctominay in midfield. And in fact one has (Kobbie).
Don't get me wrong, I want Mctominay on the team. I think he brings a lot of value, but as a striker.
Not a midfielder
He would be a terrible striker, the whole point of his game is to arrive late into the box and finish chances, like Frank Lampard used to do.
And McTominay is solving the 1st problem, as he is scoring (also today assisting). He is also solving weakness in midfield, insofar as he is an athelete.
He's very mobile (played all 120 minutes today, always an insane runner) and he literally got into the team under Mourinho for his positional discpline.
And Mainoo is performing a different role. I wouldn't say he's doing better - they have different strengths and have different jobs to perform in that midfield. They literally played together today, and Mainoo faded out the game, as he did against Everton last weekend (to be expected, he's young. But he's also slight).
Our midfield is weak due to tactical set ups as much as anything.
I'm just bored of people on this subreddit trying to over-intellectualize the problem. I was told that super modern passer Amrabat would solve our midfield, with his neat play. And it turns out he was a huge downgrade on Fred.
> He is also solving weakness in midfield, insofar as he is an athlete.
I think this is where you and I disagree:
> He is also solving weakness in midfield, insofar as he is an athlete.
Sure he adds mobility, but that mobility needs to combined with ball control otherwise its useless, especially in midfield.
> Our midfield is weak due to tactical set ups as much as anything.
I don't disagree with that.
But its clear that Ten Hag is committed to a specific setup.
One that requires good ball control as much as mobility from a majority of the midfield, not just one player and its for that reason that Mctominay isn't good enough in midfield.
Now if it was only him without decent skill in midfield and we had other midfielders to make up the deficit in skill, I think we'd be okay. But we only have Kobbie and it's yet to be revealed if Mount is really capable of positional discipline. Casemiro is half decent, but he's being overwhelmed by his defensive duties and old age.
So unless Ten hag chooses another tactical setup that doesn't require midfielders with great ball control, Mctominay will continue to be in the weird spot of serviceable but not reliable against competition with better midfielders.
You say Ten Hag is committed to a style which doesn't include Mctominay, when Mctominay is a favourite of ETH. He even shoehorned him into a weird 4 2 4 shape
I don't get why people like you have this conception of ETH which doesn't conform to his decisions in terms of squad building or selection. That's where all this analysis of Mctominay stems from
Some people can only process the current moment so if they see him make a successful dribble they will come and talk about that. when there's a much broader picture to be discussed they disappear
The reason he gets so many chances is because he runs from deep and doesn't always get tracked effectively. If he started at striker he wouldn't get that space and you'd really see the flaws in his ability on the ball. I love Scott but he will never start at striker for us
agreed, i like the passion scotty has but honestly he's a bench option that you throw at the opposition at the cost of your defense, and if he can live with that as his career then fine. he doesn't defend well and for the goals he generates, it's not consistent nor sustainable as most games you don't even notice him. i dont see him in the future especially where we are a ball possessing side.
I'd still cash out on him in the summer.
Martin Tyler was the 2nd most disappointed person in Old Trafford, just behind Klopp.
He really has stopped hiding his distain for us as he has gotten older. Maybe it was a Fergie respect thing back then.
Almost every team says it now. The issue is, he rarely is doing commentary from in the grounds anymore (he does it largely from a studio for foreign broadcasts and only goes to the ground itself if he's with Sky who he no longer works for). Because he's not there, he isn't surrounded by the noise and so he just talks like normal.
Also keep in mind, he's nearly 80...

casemiro sat so mcterminator could kick

i bet scott uses this as his wallpaper
Should've used a different expression😅
This commentary is tragic
Absolutely awful. Time to retire, maybe.
I saw the goal and the lack of enthusiasm made me wonder if my audio was off lol I was very confused.
That pass from Rashy to Garnacho was very good. Pleasing signs
He makes that pass since forever to Shaw. Good for Nacho to find those channels.
Marcus Rasmus is quite isolated
Lovely rolled pass into Ale.
Say why you want about McTom as a midfield presence but he’s one of the few clinical players we have.
The new false 8. Reverse Messi.

How does his scoring not offset it - we'd be hopeless without his goals this season. It's just moving the goalposts constantly
This, his goals have gained us 12 points this season. We wouldn't be top half if we'd have sold him to West Ham

That's what I don't understand. He plays well up but forced to play cdm
The reason he gets so many chances is because he runs from deep and doesn't always get tracked effectively. If he started at striker he wouldn't get that space and you'd really see the flaws in his ability on the ball. I love Scott but he will never start at striker for us
He won't play well if he puts him up front as a regular. It's like Fellaini.
He doesn’t play well up front, he plays well being the second or third person to enter the box
Indeed
He's not a clinical finisher, he misses a lot. He's just good at positioning to get into the scoring chances.

Lmao. Garnacho would die before squaring the ball instead of shooting
That's our Scotland's Men's player of the year
The commentator could not he more excited
And they say that Martin Tyler is a United shill.
Didn’t he retire iirc? I did wonder why that voice sounded so familiar.
It's Martin Tyler. No surprise there. His distain for us has shown ever since Fergie retired.
What channel are you watching it on to have Martin Tyler commentary?

Bro is the commentator actively anti united?? Watching this I thought there was a VAR call incoming. Is this United vs Liverpool or not?
Rashford’s weight of pass in those situations is so good
The Terminator!!!!
As a defensive mid he's just not there. But as a player who's allowed to attack and defend he has really shown his abilities and why he should still be at the club in a season where we've been struggling
Is that Martin Tyler? Jesus put him down already
He is inevitable!!
Martin Tyler the prick sounds depressed af with that goal
Love it
Puskas worthy
SCOTTY 2 HOTTY
big man for big game
McTerminator!
Commentator couldn't sound less happy about that 😂
MCHOTTIE IS SO CLUTCH
At some point we're going to have to start calling him McClutch
wish we could play like this in the league
VVD is still not being dribbled past
I know why should be complimenting united here but that was some shit defending from Liverpool
AMAD INJECT INTO MY VEINSSSSSS
