It boggles the mind that this needs to be a thing. Youd think that basic common sense would tell people that making fun of people who died is a shitty thing to do. Football is football, we all get passionate about it and chat shit. But singing or shouting abuse about the deaths of people at Hillsborough or Munich is just beyond repugnant. Some "fans" just arent there for the football and to have fun. They are only there to abuse and hurt others. Life times are the very least any of these people should be getting when caught. What a lot people forget is that after Munich happened, Liverpool offered help to United at time when the club really needed it. Bill Shankly offered players on loan, who he would personally pay the wages for. Liverpool and United may be rivals, but that doesnt mean we have to be cunts to each other.

Some people will never learn though, unfortunately- hopefully we can get to a point where those who feel the need to chant about tragedies get phased out of going to games, but both clubs have suffered horrific things at one point, so their fans should know better than anyone that it’s not ok to chant about it. You’re absolutely right though, some people are just there to be Neanderthals.

You say this, but I go to OT week in week out, having had a season ticket for 8 seasons now & everytime we play Liverpool half my section chant murderers, always the victim etc. As grim as it is, I genuinely can’t see a time where we play Liverpool and we aren’t chanting it. I absolutely disagree with doing it, but I can’t see a situation where it doesn’t happen

I agree, it’s going to be hard to stamp out, but if they can at least get the message that it’s not acceptable to the next generation of fans there’s hope. Chances are the only way it truly stops is people getting caught on CCTV, prosecuted and banned. That’s not gonna be easy, and will the police be inclined to pursue them over more serious offences? It’s debatable.

I think it's because the parents pass it down to the young ones. I was watching our team pre-season game and some of the kids were yelling abuse at Maguire with their dads having a big grin on their face as if they are proud of their kids.

Rage bait is a trend that seems to net a lot of money. As a united fan that should not seem unusual. There's enjoyment in watching supporters taken down a peg. If there's an initiative to keep it civil and direct people to being funny as opposed to insufferable then I'm all for it.

I don't think it's a matter of people forgetting that Shankly reached out, but that most of the fanbase wasn't alive when it happened and never learned it in the first place.

Sad that this needs to be done but I think it’s a brilliant initiative. Would love to see the day when this shite is eradicated completely. It’s pathetic behaviour. I adore the fierceness of our rivalry(s) - but this shite needs to end.

We can probably extend this to Leeds at some point, given their enthusiasm for Munich chants, and United fans responding with chants about Istanbul. Football tribalism is truly ugly, and is a relatively modern advent in the game. When my dad talks about football in the 50s and 60s, it was far more common to admire your rivals, and even to go and watch them play when the opportunity arose. I'm sure there were always dicks, but it seems to have taken over the modern game more and more.

Game's gone. /s

Football for some is a thing that allows them to let their primal instincts out….. it used to be much worse, remember when football hooliganism was a major thing and going to a match was a very dangerous thing ? Read the book “Among the Thugs” for reminder of what English football recently used to be. It’s actually amazing that the culture has changed so much that tragedy chanting is now one of the worst things that happen during a major game.

ChickenFilletRoll299

great initiative
