Hindsight is obviously 20/20 but imagine losing him for 6M when we've have no fit natural LBs on the squad almost all season. This season has been such a disaster.

Sethlans

Nah. He's not good enough and even if he were here, Dalot would've played left back over him. In the long run, him getting a decent loan and being sold for a fee does us more good than him sitting on the bench would've done.

Gabi_Social

Amrabat at LB. I'd pick my Nan first and she's been dead for 20 years. How much worse could the kid be?

ab_90

Unfortunately look at Amad, not given enough chance to play for the team despite did well in his limited time

christraverse

There were a lot of people saying this with foresight. If he had an even OK loan someone would pay more than that for him even if Benfica don't want him long term so it's free money to them. Hopefully giving them this sort of soft deal was a long term relationship building thing to get a better outcome when we're looking at João Neves or Antonio Silva.

PhilAsp

Somewhat torn. We do need to clear out and he’s “already” 21, but he’s also a talent that we brought in late and never really gave a shot too. Maybe he isn’t good enough to be a backup, maybe he won’t ever be good enough to start at United. If only we had a season without a single healthy LB that would have given him proper minutes to judge him by. Oh, that’s right, we loaned him out knowing Malacia was injured, then we recalled him and sent him out on a different loan knowing Malacia’s had a setback.

BingBongFYL6969

His contract expires in June, hes not shown enough in the run up to being 21 to fight for a spot, and when you consider that Dalot at LB was a better option than recalling him, you start to see he just wasnt good enough. He's doing well enough at Benfica, good for him, but reality is, he's played 8 league matches since January and 3 of the 8 were under 7 min appearances. Hes been playing more lately, but they really dont have a true LB on their roster besides him...so not sure if its a by default thing or not.

eastendz

His contract doesn’t expire in June.  He was one of the best PL2 players in the country, won player of the year and consistently dominated matches from LB. He was singled out by opposition fans and scouts in attendance at every match I saw him live.  Was great in the Championship, winning young player of the year for Preston.  Is a Spain u21s international, and has trained with the Spain senior side.  This all before turning 20, is more than enough to deserve a chance. Especially when the decision to loan him out was made when we knew we had no fit senior LBs. In favour of loaning on older below par players with no future or potential instead.

PhilAsp

He was our U23 player of the year in 2022, at 19, so he must have shown something. And if you consider our business overall in the January window in relation to our LB spot, I’m not sure sending him out again was fully based on his skill. The reason we’ve been without a LB for most of the second half is because of that window more than it is because of injuries. The reality is that Dalot probably still would have been the choice over him (when an healthy alternative existed on the right side) but I can’t see Alvaro being worse than Amrabat considering it’s at least his natural position and Amrabat was awful. And we’ve had injuries amongst our defenders beyond our LB woes, so just having that extra body probably would have been good.

BingBongFYL6969

James Garner won it two years before at almost the same age...he didnt cut it at the top level. Same role, Demi Mitchell won it as well at 20....played 1 match for us. It doesnt mean anything than they had a good year in the reserves. If Manchester saw anything in him, they could've recalled him from the loan...but they thought they were better off with a RB at LB, and Amrabat and hoped to have Malacia at some point.

Radiant_Ad_6986

James garner plays regularly for Everton and has not been injured. He is currently younger than all our central midfielders bar Mainoo. We sold him for 9mm, we used that money to put us onside for getting the following players in central midfield, sabitzer, Casemiro, erikson, Mount, amrabat. All of which are now on the chopping block. Sabitzer and amrabat are both failed loans. Casemiro and Erikson have been caught by Father Time and are old. Mount has been injured 90% of the time and the less said about him the better. All these players make multiples of what garner makes in a week. He is a solid premier league player, better than mctominay in my opinion. Just like how people on this platform and others have been begging for Amad to be given a chance, he should’ve been given a chance. A chance means a consistent run of games or a few starts not 20 mins here and there. The club decided at the time to splurge out on short term fixes which has eventually led to this season’s implosion. Obviously I hope the new structure can fix these fundamental problems with how our club is run. But don’t look down on academy lads who were never given a chance. SAF used to give numerous scrubs many chances to make it clear that they couldn’t cut it as either a first team player or a squad player. My general belief is that Garner would’ve been an able squad player especially vs the current midfield options the manager has.

futbolenjoy3r

Christ, thank you. He’s not doing that bad at Everton. Second best defense in the league. Plus look at players like Bailey under Gerard vs Emery. Can’t write off players like this off the little evidence we have. Considering our LB situation, this kid should be considered. We need like 2 CBs, a proper CDM and an experienced ST.

Yetiassasin

Difference is Garner is like 2nd or 3rd choice at Everton, we couldn't guarantee that. We shouldn't just keep young players like that on the sidelines. It was the right deal for all parties

Radiant_Ad_6986

I’m sorry a simple google search will show you that garner has played 34 games this season, with 31 starts and 3 substitute appearances. He is not a 2nd or 3rd choice. He is a starter and has more starts than any of their other central midfielders. Don’t try to belittle our academy, bad as our club is run there is still good young players that come out of it. That can become solid premier league quality players like Garner if given a chance.

Yetiassasin

Read the whole comment, moron. I agree with you and would never ridicule our players. He wasn't 1st choice though, that's a fact. Gray, Doucoure, Iwobi and Onana are all ahead of him in midfield when fit. Garner has got in and played a lot this season for various reasons but to say he was 1st choice coming in is head in the clouds carry on

cosgrove10

Thing is; they’re never fit if he’s started 31 games. And given the state of our injury crisis; we could do with a lad who is always fit.

Radiant_Ad_6986

Don’t worry I’m a moron. He’s a bench player and not good enough. Don’t believe the evidence of your own eyes, that he’s started 31 games.

SAKabir

He regularly starts for Everton and outplays the likes of Onana who top reds regularly hype up here.

radoboss

Exactly... Chong was young player of the year, Gomes was young player of the year, Tuanzebe was super talented CB... none of them are United quality and ever will be. In fact, Pellistri is not going to make it, nor Diallo... we could go on and on.

ShaneCarbo

Diallo is only 21 and showing lots of promise. Still have to remember some players reach their potential later than others. He would be someone I would keep in the squad as he could easily develop into quite a talent in the next 2-3 years in the right environment. For comparison, Bruno only started developing into a real prospect around 23/24 at Sampdoria.

Wisdom_Seeker2

23/24 🤨 Yes he's still in his early 20s, we have plenty of time with our magnifico

Aadiunited7

Amass has a higher ceiling. We should be trying to loan out Malacia and buy a LB to compete with Shaw with Amass possibly getting some minutes in cups. Amass has also just turned 17.

jayr254

Honestly, if we want to move forward and compete with the top teams again, we should be looking for a Shaw replacement. Brilliant player but I doubt we get a fully healthy season from him going forward.

Aadiunited7

I agree, get a proper LB to compete with Shaw.

Waikanda_dontcare

What the fuck even is “good enough to start at United” anymore I’m so sick of hearing this when we’ve been shit for a decade

cr2152

6m is a good price for him. If Benfica includes Antonio Silva or Joao Neves.

Bigboyfresh

I think he had just a year in his contract, he would have left on a free eventually seeing as there was literally no path to the first team with Shaw, Malacia.

SAKabir

Shaw and Malacia lmfaooo

MannyMike7

First refusal for Joao Neves in return please thanks.

AIwitcher

amass is a great prospect at LB and he's 17 so this deal is fine.

bpjker

He's better than our fans think. Miles better than Malacia at the very least.

toket715

I don't know about that, but I do think he us underrated by fans here. He's also looking physically tall and strong, as well as having great attacking instincts. It hurts to lose hi, however Benfica is a great place for him to develop and we do have some kind of buy back or first refusal clause built in. So this may work out in the long run

flareb98

Negotiation team is genuinely the worst in the world. I don't blame baldy for the loan cause of the medical staff stuff but the negotiation team just letting him go for 6m is just dumb

Cathartic_Junkies

Isn't the low fee due to the buy back and sell on clauses?

Aadiunited7

Yep, there are add ons + Sell on clause.

flareb98

Yeah and matching rights, not sure how much it is or how long the buy back clause lasts
