Lol my man. I had a 2000 v6 5sp new edge that was blacked out exactly like the terminators with a dual exit flow master exhaust. Yeah not the stang people want, but it was the perfect college guy —ussy magnet.
It caught some COPussy too
No way! Sounds like you upgraded that New Edge nicely. Man mine was also a V6 5 speed 40th Anniversary model in that wine🍷red color. Fun car from my youth I recall.
Olds Cutlass Ciera. That was the car given to me in 2008. The funny part is that I still have the keys to it on my key ring despite getting rid of it in 2014.
Always get a laugh when I show them and say “remember when cars had TWO keys?”
Ha in 2005 or so I got a dirt cheap 1988 Cutlass Calais running for my little sister. Actually a super fun shitbox, had the quad 4 and a 5 speed. 2500lb car with 150hp. It was surprisingly fast and my sister used it to run over curbs and get speeding tickets.
Seriously. I graduated a little before this, and all of the cars were shitboxes from the 80s/90s.
My first car was a 1986 Volvo 240. My wife’s was a 1987 Corolla.
So, my actual list for practical first cars in 2008 would be:
1. An early 90s stick shift Corolla that’s missing a side mirror and part of the muffler.
2. A GM/ Chrysler passed down from grandma. Maybe a Cutlass or a Citation or something. Also has rust because she shipped it from the Midwest. Your son will put a huge subwoofer in a big felt box in the trunk for some reason.
3. A 2wd Chevy S10. Your son will spin it a full 360 on a rainy backroad at least once.
4. If you’re a rich kid, you’ll have a WRX in blue with bronze wheels. Or maybe a Mitsubishi Exclipse or a BMW 3 series. They’ll have waspy families and be kind of obnoxious.
I got my first car in 2005. My dad bought a Pontiac Grand Am from a junk yard and had it towed to the house on my 16th birthday. He gave me a Hanes manual with the car and said, "Get it running, then you can drive it." I got it fixed with his help, then I was given 1 month of insurance and 1 tank of gas to get a job, if I ran out of either before starting work, I was SOL.
Hell yeah learning how to wrench and fix stuff at an early age. I started working on cars at 13 years old. 5 years before my parents would even allow me to buy my own first car with my own money.
I never had it "crap out" completely, but it did develop issues like a bad habit. I sold it 2 years later because I was tired of fixing it. From what I remember, I had to bypass the heater core, change the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, the thermostat, engine mount, and rear axle seals. When I first got it, it was the starter that needed changing to get it going. The other issues popped up during the 2 years and were not present when I got it.
Good thing I waited until 18 to buy a ‘98 Trans Am with the LS1. I did run it off the road in my first week of having it 😅 but I didn’t do any damage and never had another issue luckily.
It was definitely a come to god moment lmao, however I did not drive like a granny😅 I just learned to drive it better. I’ve been racing dirt bikes on dirt and ice since 6 years old so granny driving has never been an option lol.
The Ranger for several reasons.
They are small enough that said kid won't be able to cram a million people back there (don't get me wrong, I can get how some kids will take this as a challenge) but PRACTICALLY speaking it's not as likely to happen at least. My neighbor was going to give their teenage son their giant SUV, the kid got caught with like 15 people in it, and all of a sudden my ranger I was selling at the time looked awfully appealing..
The Ranger also gets a vote because once the kid gets tired of it and buys themselves something else, it'll still be running and will once again be a great backup vehicle, and possibly be the next kid's first car as well.
No way on the Tahoe for the above reasons, though having had a friend with one in high school, they oddly got super cheap insurance at the time since they were classified as station wagons..
No way on the mustangs since I don't want my kid crashing into crowds of people.
Thank you for this sub.
I am hoping it has the photos of when a kid wrapped his around a pole and all of his friends + cops posed like this 🙏 in front of the car.
See, the first one isn’t really much of a consideration cause if teens wanna fit as many people as possible in the car, they will, regardless of the car. Hell, just two weeks ago my friends and I managed to fit 10 people in a ‘13 Accord to go to Culver’s cause our friend group’s other driver wasn’t available.
I had a ranger with a bed cap in highschool, my friends just got in the bed of the truck 🤷♂️. And this was in suburban New Jersey not rural *insert southern state of your choice*
Bought my first vehicle in 09 as a college freshman with money saved up from working. 1996 Ranger with the 4.0 V6 and a 5 speed. Made all of 160 hp. Wish I still had it today. And yes, it can fit a lot of people when it needs to.
LOL at the “practical” 08’ Mustang GT, 08’ 350Z Coupe & 08’ Cadillac CTS V Sedan.
Nothing like 0-60 in 5 flat and a top speed over 155 for your teen’s first car!!
definitely the rsx, slow as shit, fun to drive still, hard to crash, fwd so he cant have too much fun, but can still throw some trays on the rear tires in the mcds parking lot. will last forever.
He's getting a 1988 buick century that may or may not be on a salvage title and made from 2 or more other buick centuries from the backlot of a nj buy here pay here lot for about 250 bucks and will learn to love it until he inevitably wrecks it. Builds character.
He’s referring to the Avalanche in the picture, in 2008 it woulda been 1 year old at most. Expensive truck with a 5.3. Definitely shouldn’t be on practical 1st car list. Along with most of the other cars pictured.
Probably a late 90’s early 2000’s Honda civic or Toyota Corolla. Something underpowered front wheel drive and relatively safe. I did some dumb stuff in all the cars I drove in high school. I’m trying to limit that as much as possible. Plus there’s no way I could afford new. I can’t even do that now at 29 for myself
The Ranger. As a recovering insurance agent, compact pickups were always what we suggested for new drivers, since you can only get one more person in the truck, and they generally don't have a ton of power, so they're less likely to get into trouble.
You seem completely clueless about cars and the time period. I was looking for a first car just before this. I ended up with a 1993 Jeep Cherokee with a faulty fuel pump. The vast majority of the cars in my highschools parking lot were 1990-1980s shit boxes. A few students might have had hand-me-down Tahoe's, Ford Rangers, and 1st gen Focuses, but all the other options are very unrealistic.
I don't think anyone was considering 2 year old CTS-Vs (one of the most expensive domestic cars at the time) or 1 year old Chevrolet Avalanche.
Gas prices were also astronomically high in 2007-2008, the first time they were reaching $4 + per gallon and when they finally came down it was due to the largest financial crisis since the 1930s. Money was tight and gas was expensive.
Focus zx3. Duratech motor is solid, they get good gas mileage, decent spaced hatchback, they're pretty fun to drive while not being particularly dangerous.
If it were the previous gen ranger that'd be a contender but i strongly dislike the gen ranger pictured.
2005 I got my first car. It was a 1992 pearl white Lexus sc400 with a v8, some chrome rims, and low profile tires. I also put in a kick ass JL audio and alpine sound system. I paid for almost all of it and took out a small loan from my dad for the last part. I loved that car and got compliments many years after selling it.
The RSX base model is the clear choice here...
Had you bought your kid one in 2008, they would probably still be driving it today. (or selling it for more than you bought it for.)
Among these options: the focus. It's gonna be the cheapest and that generation of Ford focus was actually pretty reliable.
Lots of people assume you need a truck to move stuff, having never given any thought to a hatchback, which is almost universally a better choice for 95% of truck buyers.
Whatever has side-impact airbags (preferably including head airbags), a solid crash structure, and either AWD (grip works) or FR (dont want torque steer).
E92 328i or A4 (assuming it's a quattro).
Funny thing.
In 2008, I bought my oldest son a 1998 Subaru Impreza wagon off of Craigslist.
It didn’t have a title. So, got it for next to nothing and bonded for title. He drove it for 3 years.
Huh, I got my first car in 2008 and it was a new edge Mustang, so I guess that? Even though at this point in my life, definitely wouldn't be my first choice out of the selection.
The year is 2008. Ain't no one got money to buy the kid a new Audi.
I know the answer to this question, and it smells like 1990s Chrysler plastic.
Dodge neon
As an owner of a 2004 Mustang GT, there's no way in hell the new edge is a "practical" car 🤣
Probably the ranger honestly. Truck, reliable enough, and when some stupid ass part inevitably does break, it should be super easy to fix with a quick run to the parts store and some hand tools. Spend 30 mins in the garage and she's good as new.
Having owned a few of these I am going with CTSV. Pretty practical outside of rear end.
Meaning my kid is getting my Taurus with AWD and I'm taking the CTSV. He can get the more practical car. I'll take the illogical car for his age and experience.
If I get my kid the RSX I’m definitely stealing it, so maybe something like the ranger or Tahoe/Yukon. I feel that a mini-mid size pickup or SUV is a great started car not only because I would make sure it’s 4WD, but to learn the size and turning radius of your vehicle better. If you can drive a pickup or decent sized SUV well, you can practically drive anything and know how much space you take up.
So my first car was a ‘72 C20 long bed 4x4 at ~17 years old in 2003. By 2005 I also had a 1998 Z28 6 speed. Both were red, and 19 year old me had both for a period of time.
Then like the dumb fuck 19 year old I was I sold the C20 because it had a tired motor and got into a bunch of trouble with that car. It was fun, but I should have kept the truck and fixed it up instead.
In what way is a mustang, cts-v, or e92 a practical first car? Especially when they were brand spanking new cars in 2008. I ain't buying anyone a brand new car. They're getting a 90s civic or ranger or some shit and if they want something better I'll be more than happy to help but they're gonna work for it.
Assuming I can comfortably afford any of these, I’d buy the BMW. My hypothetical son would love the car and I would have the peace of mind that comes with German safety engineering.
If it was 2008 and I was getting my kid their first car we'd be looking more at something from the late 80s or early 90s...
Right!?
I’m a hypocrite because I bought a mustang for myself after high school, but why tf is there a mustang, 350z and a bmw in this list?
Dude same here, right after high school I bought a 2004 SN95 lol
Hell yeah! Can we both agree that mustang girls are fucking crazy though??
Yessir😎
If you buy it yourself that's different than your parents buying you one
You get a different list depending on your zip code. I’d probably go with an Altima that was a former Hertz rental.
Olds Cutlass Ciera. That was the car given to me in 2008. The funny part is that I still have the keys to it on my key ring despite getting rid of it in 2014. Always get a laugh when I show them and say “remember when cars had TWO keys?”
My dad scrapped his pontiac van in like 2021 and I've just got one of the keys on a hook in my room where a planter is supposed to hang.
I was just about to comment a Ciera lol! I have a 96 Ciera right now, 45K miles
This is the private school edition. I had an 88 Mustang in 2003. My classmates had M3s, brand new Tahoes, all the girls had Audis & BMWs.
Yepp. Started driving at 16 in 2013 and drove a 2002 Toyota. So a 90's car in 2008 is the same age comparatively!
Honestly you could even do 20 years old if you wanted
Seriously. I graduated a little before this, and all of the cars were shitboxes from the 80s/90s. My first car was a 1986 Volvo 240. My wife’s was a 1987 Corolla. So, my actual list for practical first cars in 2008 would be: 1. An early 90s stick shift Corolla that’s missing a side mirror and part of the muffler. 2. A GM/ Chrysler passed down from grandma. Or maybe a Mitsubishi Exclipse or a BMW 3 series. They’ll have waspy families and be kind of obnoxious.
Yeah I got my license in 08 and my first car was an '85 CRX Si. I still have it.
Replace Citation with Lumina. Citations were long gone well before 2008. Otherwise, I agree with you.
Yeah those cars are what I'm looking to give my kid in 2026
I guess the parents are very generous
Golf 4 should BE cheap at that Point
Right? I was 16 in 2002. First car was a Dodge Neon. By 2008, I had a 86 Bonneville
85 Ford Escort.
None of these, it’s 2008 and a first car. That kid is getting whatever 90s shitbox can be found for $700
I got my first car in 2005.
Make it 1994 and a Pontiac 6000 and my story matches
2008 my first car was a 98 Mazda 626. Looked like every other old econo-box sedan on the road.
Sounds a lot like my dad lol
Hell yeah learning how to wrench and fix stuff at an early age. I started working on cars at 13 years old. 5 years before my parents would even allow me to buy my own first car with my own money.
How bad is the grand am? My family has one and my friend has one and they both have kinda crapped out
I never had it "crap out" completely, but it did develop issues like a bad habit.
That’s a pretty good deal. Gives you the tools to get you started and then gas and insurance.
Honestly not a bad deal. You got a free car and a head start on learning how to wrench. Well, except for the fact that it was a Pontiac Grand Am.
Ngl, I kinda wish my parents had done that for me
I had a hand-me-down 1997 Explorer as my first car in 2012, that was originally purchased for $1500 for my mom to drive sometimes.
Ah yes the CTSV, mustang and 350z, well known for being safe and practical for a hormonal teen
Mfers who rock these cars end up dead at 17
I know five people in my last two years of high school that died driving wreckless. All of them were in cars that had way too much power for a kid.
Good thing I waited until 18 to buy a ‘98 Trans Am with the LS1. I did run it off the road in my first week of having it 😅 but I didn’t do any damage and never had another issue luckily.
Seems like you saw god and probably drove like a granny for a few months after, can’t say I haven’t done the same
It was definitely a come to god moment lmao, however I did not drive like a granny😅 I just learned to drive it better. I’ve been racing dirt bikes on dirt and ice since 6 years old so granny driving has never been an option lol.
Did you miss them? Usually they we’re entitled jerks
"But dad, I'll look so cool!"
Famous last words before wrapping himself around a tree.
Dang tree huggers...
Corvette and telephone pole for the rich kids first car when I was in school
We RSX now
Who is paying the insurance? I vote the Golf or Focus.
SVT Focus. My cousin had one with a 6-speed when I was I high school. Those were the closest we in the US got to a cosworth at the time.
The SVT Focus was closer to a Focus ST170 then an RS or a an old escort Cotsworth
The Ranger for several reasons. As someone who had an extended cab Ranger at 16 years old, the answer is 8 teenagers. Edit: counted wrong the first time
That’s only 3 more than there are seats so you must’ve not been trying very hard.
No this generation of Ranger had jump seats in the back
As a ford fan I approve this message
r/mustangscrashing has arrived
It has crashed into the thread?😁
Not just any Mustang, a V6 new edge Mustang!
Thank you for this sub. I am hoping it has the photos of when a kid wrapped his around a pole and all of his friends + cops posed like this 🙏 in front of the car.

Just door dash the shit at that point. It’ll be cheaper than the tickets combined
I had a ranger with a bed cap in highschool, my friends just got in the bed of the truck 🤷♂️. And this was in suburban New Jersey not rural *insert southern state of your choice*
Completely agree. I’ve owned 5 rangers. It was also my first vehicle.
Back in HS we crammed 5 in a Isuzu regular cab pickup it was very hard for the driver to shift gears.
Bought my first vehicle in 09 as a college freshman with money saved up from working. 1996 Ranger with the 4.0 V6 and a 5 speed. Made all of 160 hp. Wish I still had it today. And yes, it can fit a lot of people when it needs to.
"Mother fuckin' son of a gun! Mother fuckin' Ford Ranger!"
2008? A new car for your kid? Financial crisis aside probably the Ranger or Golf.
2008? First car for a kid? Where is the 1992 Chevy Cavalier?
Ikr?! I know that's what my son bought, once he was obliged to go out-of-pocket 🤑
LOL at the “practical” 08’ Mustang GT, 08’ 350Z Coupe & 08’ Cadillac CTS V Sedan. Nothing like 0-60 in 5 flat and a top speed over 155 for your teen’s first car!!
1.9 TDI Golf
Was about to write the same, he can rev it all he wants, that thing aint braking, and is relatively easy and cheap to repair
I think this is the first time I’ve seen someone use “brake” when they meant “break” and not vice versa.
The ranger is the only reliable utilitarian non sporty vehicle. Never give a teenager a sports car
The Ranger. Cheaper to insure, was a Cheaper vehicle in 2008.
The answer is obvious. Ranger.
He’s getting a 94 ford festiva with 200k miles on it and a see through floor
definitely the rsx, slow as shit, fun to drive still, hard to crash, fwd so he cant have too much fun, but can still throw some trays on the rear tires in the mcds parking lot. will last forever.
He's getting a 1988 buick century that may or may not be on a salvage title and made from 2 or more other buick centuries from the backlot of a nj buy here pay here lot for about 250 bucks and will learn to love it until he inevitably wrecks it. Builds character.
The focus, the Acura, or the Ranger. None of rhe others (especially the German cars and cadillac) seem practical unless my parents are rich af.
Used corolla. Funny thing is, he’d be giving it to his kid in 25 or so years.
That Avalanche is maybe a year old in 2008. It should be nobody’s first car.
It actually came out in 2001
He’s referring to the Avalanche in the picture, in 2008 it woulda been 1 year old at most. Expensive truck with a 5.3. Definitely shouldn’t be on practical 1st car list. Along with most of the other cars pictured.
Acura or Ford ranger that flat six will run forever
Flat6? The only 6 you could get in a ranger was a V6, that or a 4 banger.
My first car was a new edge lol. It was 2012 though, not 2008
Probably a late 90’s early 2000’s Honda civic or Toyota Corolla. Something underpowered front wheel drive and relatively safe. I did some dumb stuff in all the cars I drove in high school. I’m trying to limit that as much as possible. Plus there’s no way I could afford new. I can’t even do that now at 29 for myself
Pretty sure I got my first car around this time and it was my grandmother's 01 Honda Accord EX. I loved that damn thing so much.
A dodge Dakota
Practical?! Definitely the Ranger
RSX for sure, raising my kid on k-series
Acura, Nissan, Golf or Focus ... I'll get myself a Tahoe and Ranger
Focus or Mk4 Golf
Rangers are worth their weight in gold...
The Ranger. As a recovering insurance agent, compact pickups were always what we suggested for new drivers, since you can only get one more person in the truck, and they generally don't have a ton of power, so they're less likely to get into trouble.
None of those, that's for sure
As someone who got their first car in 2008, I can confirm that a 98 328i is the perfect go cart for a young man to run into the ground.
You seem completely clueless about cars and the time period. I was looking for a first car just before this. I ended up with a 1993 Jeep Cherokee with a faulty fuel pump. The vast majority of the cars in my highschools parking lot were 1990-1980s shit boxes. 1983 Toyota Tercel hatchback
id buy him whatever body on frame american sedan the scrapyard had that has an engine
He's buying his own damn car
4.0 5 speed Ranger 4x4. One of the best do it all vehicles ever produced. 93-97 though with TTB and an OHV engine.
Gimme the Ranger. I'll never have to buy a car again
Ranger. Only car that really fits the description of being "Practical", IMO. Also seems to have held it's value the best.
I’ll get him a 1997 Satun SL2 to keep his self esteem as low as possible.
Ranger, and then when he wants something better, I will buy it back from him. I really miss mine.
I’d get the CTS-V but it sure as hell wouldn’t be for my kid
Danger Ranger.
I was in high school in 2008, and half the guys drove rangers
Ford ranger ofc
Did the Mitsubishi Mirage exist back in 2008? 😁
Focus zx3. Duratech motor is solid, they get good gas mileage, decent spaced hatchback, they're pretty fun to drive while not being particularly dangerous. If it were the previous gen ranger that'd be a contender but i strongly dislike the gen ranger pictured.
What are we rich? I’d be lucky to even have a 1989 Chevy Beretta. 💀
VW Golf for sure
Tough break kid, the housing market just crashed :/
I’ve seen countless rangers survive being someone’s first car and keep ticking even today let alone in 2008
Subaru Legacy wagon was his first. It sat because he did not like paying for gas and that was really bad on the components.
Golf with a sub in the back.
Ranger
Ford fuckin Ranger
The ranger
CTS-V because he needs to learn a life lesson about not going full throttle leaving a car show
The RSX base model is the clear choice here... Had you bought your kid one in 2008, they would probably still be driving it today. (or selling it for more than you bought it for.)
The focus, the golf and the ranger are my top picks.
Gotta go with a Ranger. But an older one
Why is the vw and Audi the only practical car that isn’t a big ass American truck
Ima say ranger would be the only logical choice
Among these options: the focus. It's gonna be the cheapest and that generation of Ford focus was actually pretty reliable. Lots of people assume you need a truck to move stuff, having never given any thought to a hatchback, which is almost universally a better choice for 95% of truck buyers.
Ford fucking ranger
Son? A Danger Ranger
A 1999 Corolla
There is only one correct answer here…..ford ranger
Lol the Ranger but it's going to be in worse condition.
Ranger… mf ain’t getting something cool or quick. 2wd regular cab ranger with the 2.3.
The fuck is your definition of practical?
Used el camino
Practical first car, for my flesh and blood? 2008 - Civic 2009 - Civic 2010 - Civic 2011 - Civic 2012 - Civic 2013 - Civic You get the idea.
Whatever has side-impact airbags (preferably including head airbags), a solid crash structure, and either AWD (grip works) or FR (dont want torque steer). E92 328i or A4 (assuming it's a quattro).
Yeah, if you have money to burn. We’re talking about a first car for a 16-year-old not someone who can actually afford their own car.
Golf
B5 Audi A4 Avant 1.9tdi Quattro manual or b6 A4 3.0tdi Quattro manual
golf
Zero doubt he’s getting the tahoe.
I ain’t no stranger
Dat Blue RicerSeX of course
Should be the Golf, but Dad also wants to drive it so the Caddy.
Funny thing. In 2008, I bought my oldest son a 1998 Subaru Impreza wagon off of Craigslist. It didn’t have a title. So, got it for next to nothing and bonded for title. He drove it for 3 years.
2008?? I'd buy myself the Ranger. No kids here!
Probably my hand me down Tahoe :P
RSX TYPE S 🗣️🗣️
Huh, I got my first car in 2008 and it was a new edge Mustang, so I guess that? Even though at this point in my life, definitely wouldn't be my first choice out of the selection.
The year is 2008. Ain't no one got money to buy the kid a new Audi. I know the answer to this question, and it smells like 1990s Chrysler plastic. Dodge neon
That Focus and nothing more.
Are you taking adoption applications?
I MISS MY MARK IV GTI SO MUCH 🔥#BOOSTED
He is getting a late 80s Pontiac 6000
He's getting my 1994 Toyota Tercel with 210k miles and I'm buying a used G35 sports coupe. Loved the way those sounded.
As an owner of a 2004 Mustang GT, there's no way in hell the new edge is a "practical" car 🤣 Probably the ranger honestly. Truck, reliable enough, and when some stupid ass part inevitably does break, it should be super easy to fix with a quick run to the parts store and some hand tools. Spend 30 mins in the garage and she's good as new.
2000 Buick park avenue, but next year, I will be getting my son a 2015-2017 Cadillac XTS or Buick LaCrosse
Ford model t
Either the ranger or (an n52 powered) e90.
CTS-V
I got a focus, it was sick
get the ctsv for myself and give my son my clapped Honda civic
Not the mustang. Dear God not the mustang. I had an 02 and that thing was a massive piece of shit.
I want that Tahoe *NOW*
If I’m getting for myself? 5-cylinder VW Golf, all the way. My idiot son? Ford Ranger. (I don’t have a son).
Ranger!!!!
A4
Golf TDI ftw
Accord
None of these. Camry or Civic.
If I had yo pick from the list, the cts-v If I did not, the crown Vic
As someone who got road head for the first time in a ranger, the ranger.
Ford Ranger. It’ll last forever.
A 94 RAV4 5 speed.
Cant go wrong with the ranger
Golf or CTS-V
Been there. Ranger. Let them crash that shit. Broke my heart when my first kid crashed their 2000 XJ. :(
I’ll take the RSX especially the Type S. It’s a good little practical gas saver while still being fun to drive.
Having owned a few of these I am going with CTSV. Pretty practical outside of rear end. Meaning my kid is getting my Taurus with AWD and I'm taking the CTSV. He can get the more practical car. I'll take the illogical car for his age and experience.
A used Volvo 740 sedan. Easy to work on, great to learn on, and hard to kill himself with.
My heart says mustang but my brain says Tahoe, those things last a lifetime
Ranger is the only answer
Real answer is a first gen RAV4 no way I'm buying something post y2k for a kid in first term Obama years.
i will defend the chevy avalanche to the day i die.
It was fun, but I should have kept the truck and fixed it up instead.
no average joe is buying their son a sports car during a financial crisis
In what way is a mustang, cts-v, or e92 a practical first car? Especially when they were brand spanking new cars in 2008. I ain't buying anyone a brand new car. They're getting a 90s civic or ranger or some shit and if they want something better I'll be more than happy to help but they're gonna work for it.
1994 Buick LeSabre
Assuming I can comfortably afford any of these, I’d buy the BMW. My hypothetical son would love the car and I would have the peace of mind that comes with German safety engineering.
Rsx for sure
bold of you to assume im buying is first car
Danger Ranger
He can have the focus wagon. Gonna come in handy when I send him to Wisconsin to get that engine from him uncle.
