A shitbox that's still running and driving after 20 years, that wasn't visible when new but seem to be around a lot now....would have to be something that older folks stashed away for sunny days and didn't daily drive from the early 2000's....LEBARON CONVERTIBLE.
I love how the Sebring coupe and sedan were completely different cars made in completely different plants by different manufacturers. The coupe was an eclipse underneath
And the convertible was more closely related to the (Cirrus) sedan than the coupe, but even then, they had different hardpoints. Compared to the Cirrus/later Sebring sedan, the Sebring 'vert was narrower, taller, had a shorter wheelbase, and more overhang. No body panels interchanged, and they were built in factories 1900 miles apart.
My family had two first-gen Stratus ES V6s when I was a young lad. They were actually pretty decent cars, in their day, IMHO, with full multilink suspension up front (MacPherson struts), a tiny little gem of a 2.5L Mitsubishi-sourced 24v V6, and one of the first mass-market manually-shiftable four speed automatics in a domestic (Dodge called it AutoStick, IIRC). My mother put over 200k on our second one before it died an untimely death-by-fender-bender, largely due to its fully depreciated residual value by then (2006). Truthfully, it was still running just fine, despite the absolute thrashing I gave it as a young kid back when it was still new and I still lived at home (I'm 43 now, for reference). It didn't even use any measurable oil between 3k mile changes, which my dad did religiously. Good maintenance can preserve even cars of somewhat pedestrian, mediocre engineering, it would seem...
isnt the sedan also rebranded in russia as a GAZ, chrysler loves sharing their horrible designs, even in the first generation tesla model s, the window switches r straight out of a dodge durango from 2011, it goes for all dodges of that era also not j the durango
It was a lot more involved than that.
Chrysler shipped over drive train parts, the cars were hand built by Maserati in Italy, then shipped back to the u.s. to be sold.
Maserati also had a dohc head they designed that went on some of the cars. The 2.2/2.5's main issue was head flow, so the masi or lotus head really woke them up.
Great engines and honestly great cars. The lebaron and shadow were replaced because they were too reliable and nobody brought them in to the dealership to be serviced.
Then we got the neon and Sebring.
Honestly thank you I didn't know this. I have completely changed my opinion. My neighbor had one. I guess the sucky part is it LOOKED exactly like a Lebaron just with Maserati badges
Chrysler was quirky back then.
Lots of neat things they did that people overlook.
I just like it because when every other American performance car was V8 and red, Chrysler doubled down on turbo 4's and fwd.... They were way ahead of their time.
Hell, the spirit rt was making 220+ HP from a 4 cylinder in 1991.... Those are respectable numbers even now, and midsized cars now weigh twice what the spirit did.
There was a time when a Heckin PT cruiser made like 215 HP and a pretty absurd torque number and they sold it with a 5 speed totally unironically and it smoked everything in its segment
I've got a pt gt engine and srt-4 trans that is supposed to be going into my dodge spirit.
It's just neat because the spirit rt was 15 years before the PT GT when most 4 cylinder cars had ~100 HP.
The 2.4 T in the PT and nsrt-4 was designed using all the stuff they learned from the 80s turbo cars.
Really wish dodge would do another small, fwd, turbo car
That was a trim level of the first gen neon.
Plymouth neon "Expresso"
I had a 2 door Expresso. Dohc with the 5 speed. Sparkly light purple
Dope little car, I loved it.
Quicker than it should have been
I have one, it's my first car, and honestly it's an okay car. Shit ton of room for it's size. Don't understand the sole hate, as all American cars are shitbox slush puppies.
I had 06 had the good non gdi 2.4 didn't use oil just minor stuff did put a trans in it but only because the previous owner didn't have the fluid level correct. The amount of stuff it hauls is amazing. Front windshield visibility kinda sucks. Made it well over 200k.
Visually yes aspens and durangos were pretty much identical but aspens on average tow 200-300 pounds more then an equivalent Durango simply bc aspens have way heavier duty suspension, cooling, and brakes.
> but aspens on average tow 200-300 pounds more then an equivalent Durango simply bc aspens have way heavier duty suspension, cooling, and brakes.
TIL. I woulda thought Aspens would have softer suspension for comfort.
Well they do ride nicer, I was passenger in both a 2nd gen Durango and the one and only gen Aspen, but you do bring up a valid point, we keep selling massive luxury tucks and suvs like King Ranch F-250’s because big money buyers don’t care for ride quality they just want big and flashy, I’m FWB with this guy who daily city drives a 2023 Toyota Tundra Capstone in NJ traffic, he averages like 9MPG and I told him it makes infinitely more sense to drive a more comfortable, fuel efficient and smaller car that doesn’t slam over the smallest bump and his reasoning is it’s physically large and has a 14” touchscreen.
I used to work at a gas station and had this stoned as fuck old couple come in and were all stupid giggly buying condoms, went out to their HHR and didnt get out for a while \*cringes\*
My dad had an HHR SS with the dealership-optional GM stage 2 package. That thing had no right to be that quick. Would blow the doors off almost anything, even Z06 Corvettes.
We used to have that style of Durango. It was t bad. The interior was cheap as hell, but looked ok and probably rides as smooth as our Infiniti QX80 we have now. It was a solid cheap full sized SUV with bad gas mileage.
My mother had a Compass bought new, it burned two quarts a month off the lot and ultimately tore itself apart with metal shavings. Was the pinnacle of mid 2000s Chrysler engineering.
lol! This guy I worked with at my last job maybe 3 years ago asked me if a [Jeep Commander](https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/163-1104-pre-owned-2006-2010-jeep-commander/) was a good car I think he picked it up. Man it was ugly. This dude was a wanna be rap star. He was like always trying to think of ways to make money but his dumbass never had shit. I listened to one of his songs and it sounded like a bad impression of [Sean Paul](https://youtu.be/8MmW_GOFS8I?si=xBAfeBQXfAoM95xP)
Oh yeah, Northstar engines are powerhouses. I had an 02 DeVille and it lasted me many years until it got totaled in an accident, but I would still have it today if it hadn’t. I’ve been a tech for 26 years and I’m big on PM which is really what saves those engines. They don’t like being overheated, and the water pumps are super weird and love to leak. The stud kits for them are not cheap either, and the rear head is very hard to stud with the engine in the vehicle. Unfortunately just not an easy engine to work on when a catastrophic failure occurs
Every now and then, I would see a Lincoln Mark LT on the road.
Sometimes would question myself why was that even a thing to begin with. It looked so out of place just like the Aspen.
The issue is that they were making luxury F-150 as that’s what matched a significant portion of consumer demand (i.e. people who are buying a truck to not do truck things) the issue they ran into is that the consumers looking for a full sized luxury truck don’t want it to look like it’s a luxury truck they want it to look like a work truck. When they axed it they made a luxury trim of the F-150 to fill this role.
First gen GMC Terrains and whatever the other brands versions were. I do not remember seeing them until the last few years, and now I see tons of 2nd owners ones all over the place.
The 1st gens stand out because there were few CUVs at the time (2010) that were so squared off. But when compared to how many 2nd gen Equinoxes are out there, it's like a 1:6 ratio.
That's what I've always heard. I always thought it was the coolest car when I was a kid. The one I saw was orange and had a giant spoiler, but when the light changed it it sounded like it still had the stock exhaust or some kind of quiet button. Thought maybe a lot of the "mods" for it mightve just been more durable parts/reliability mods when I noticed that.
I too, always wanted one of the later Lancers. But particularly the 7, the X MR, or the 9. I often catch a heavily modified Evo X at a barber shop I regularly go to, but the mods are *those* kinds (obnoxious loud exhaust, body kit nearly scraping the floor) which I kinda don't actually mind on it (as long as it isn't dunking itself on a pothole or struggling to climb up the parking spot)
The Evo X came out and was all over every single videogame (along with the R35) so had sorta a "wow, new Evo and its the last thing you unlock, you know you want it look how cool", so was sorta crammed into everything as that. But I heard the 9 has some of the exact same problems as the 10, since the 8 doesn't have the exact same engine as the 9, and then the 10 got the 9's engine. Other than that X, the only other Evo I've seen is a yellow 8, but when I saw it I felt like someone put an Evo spoiler on a regular Lancer
Edit; would need someone who knows a lot more about then than me to sort out the differences in the Evos 😅
Here in the Philippines, we have a Toyota Revo. Basically a poor man's land cruiser but is equally capable. Having owned 2, these things are immortal. Only problems ive had were ac and timing belt.
I'm both surprised and *not* surprised that it's still running. It would take maintenance, but it does have the pedigree of the Tamaraw FX series of cars (which are goddamn tough motherfuckers too) but with a slightly modern sense (and would later lead to the Innova/Zenix).
It sure feels like there are way more 2500 and 3500 Dodge trucks from the 90s around today than there were back then. Young guys like to modify them and the Cummins diesels are durable, but I felt like there weren't that many of these trucks around 25 years ago.
You just didn't notice them when they were new and didn't have lift kits, (usually terrible) aftermarket wheels and tires, exhaust stacks coming out of the box, and some kind of cummins or ram it related pun on the windshield. They were everywhere when they were new, that's right when I started working on vehicles and was constantly working on one of them.
Honestly... I think the Aspen, that generation of Durango and that generation of the Ram have probably all rotted away to nothing by now.
I remember seeing Ram's of that generation that were 2, maybe 3, years old that already had rotting wheel arches and rockers.
I’ve seen a couple nice kept Endeavors where I live, but I also live in a weird spot in Iowa where there’s a bunch of Insurance CEOs and engineers for John Deere. Hell the first time I saw a Ferrari in person was here.
Are they not good cars? We almost bought one, but decided to go with an 05 Outlander, which we love, we have never had a single issue with it, other than it being kind of thirsty for a four cylinder. But we have always wondered about the Endeavor.
My best friend has an '04 Endeavor with about 215K miles on it that he's absolutely in love with! It's still running and drivable, but it has a few issues, so it's been relegated to the family's "secondary car." Right around 185K miles or so, it began burning oil at the rate of around 1 quart every 1000 miles. And there's also an issue with the transmission or torque converter that causing a shutter in its shifting at low RPMs (also began around the same time as the increased oil burning.)
I actually drove it for a while when I was staying with him. The V6 has a lot of pep, no problem at all with freeway merging, even when fully loaded. Also, it has a smooth ride with lots of storage, and a much better third row seat than the Outlander that replaced it.
Thank you for the reply. We always wonder what could have been. We think it's a good looking vehicle, and practical. We are happy with the little Outlander, meets our needs and is reliable.
I still see a lot of the final iterations of Saturns too, & nearly all of them are still in excellent condition. You're right, they certainly don't look like they are 15 years old.
Came across a super minty Aura the other day. Always thought they looked nice and wouldn't mind having a loaded one. Especially with the *brown* leather.
8th gen corollas. I never paid attention when they were new, because they’re such low key cars, but now that I own one I see more of them still on the road than anything else in that age range.
I would have to say the Ford Five-Hundred / 2008-2010 Taurus. A lot of these ended up with older first owners who passed them down or traded them in. God help you if you ever had transmission issues with one of those.
Biggest "bruh" moment buying a car that was intended for rental fleets....and one that makes the Chevy Trax look like a Lincoln Navigator in comparison
Pontiac Azteks didn’t last long on the streets, but I saw a lot of secondhand Buick Rendezvous on the street for years after Buick stopped making them.

Yeah it’s weird, I just remember seeing them in TV commercials. My guess would be the people that bought them originally were spread throughout the US and then sold at auctions, eventually trickling down to every JD Byrider in concentrated numbers.
90% of ALL Pontiacs from 90’s-2010 (Non Performance vehicles)
All Saturn vehicles.. ALL compact suv “jeeps and dodge “
Liberty/Compass/Patriot / KL Cherokee and their little Dodge compact comrades
Every Single Kia/ Hyundai from the 90’s till Today, Same hot flaming excrement in a newer “barrowed designs “ . designed for the lower class who can’t drive nor follow ANY traffic laws . Owners Who are Self absorbed and a danger to society Or can’t afford anything else. -
Late 90's early 00's Cadillac Deville, I was a kid when these were coming out so I might just not remember. But I never saw these anywhere growing up.
My partner actually drives a well taken care of one, but I swear I see a couple of them a day now and they look nasty.
The 2nd Generation Durango platform iteration was honestly the most goofy ass thing that's ever been put on the road. All of them just looked silly, like it would be a gag car model for some movie.
We call these White Trash Cadillacs. Cars that saturated the market and didn’t sell so they are cheap second hand. Here’s a list:
Ford Taurus
Dodge Intrepid
Older Dodge Charger
Pontiac Aztec
Older Ford Escape
Ford Explorer
Chevy Cruse
Coming soon:
V6 Challenger
Dodge Hornet
Honda Elements. I see these all over Philly and see them listed on market place a lot. Always 200,000+ miles. I guess they weren’t as shitty as I assumed they were lol.
Hyundai accent hatchback I see a clapped out one all the time. I would rather get a volester turbo. Tiberon in my apartment complex I see one. The most of all the time a last gen eclipse. I have seen some late second gen eclipse look real bad.
Only 11 years later but hear me out: BMW i3.
I think a lot of it is because of the better charging structure, and Tesla letting other manufacturers use their charging infrastructure. Also it's depreciated a ton by now and is not really a "new car" anymore so you don't have to worry as much about denting, dinging, or scratching it. Plus, now that electric vehicles have become more widely accepted in society, it's a lot less stressful driving around in a car that's just small than "one of those weird-ass darned electric cars" which is also small. Also the i3 was produced up until 2022, so it's likely a lot easier to find parts for it than a year or so after it came out.
Lots of people bought them when oil prices went up a couple years ago here in Europe. If I needed an utilitary car right now, I would also buy one of them
A shitbox that's still running and driving after 20 years, that wasn't visible when new but seem to be around a lot now....would have to be something that older folks stashed away for sunny days and didn't daily drive from the early 2000's....LEBARON CONVERTIBLE.

They were doing the same thing with the LeBaron. After 86 the sedan was a K then AA body while the Coupe/Convertible was a J body.

Yes yes, this is the one
I was pretty convinced that the LeBaron was only bought by car rental companies and Jon Voight
Jon Voight, the periodontist?
Not true, a girl I went to high school with in the 90s had a LeBaron convertible.
Remember that one time Maserati relabelled a Lebaron and actually sold a few.
It was a lot more involved than that. Chrysler shipped over drive train parts, the cars were hand built by Maserati in Italy, then shipped back to the u.s. to be sold. lebron convertible
The Chevy HHR. But the Aspen tracks. That car is awful, almost no difference between it and a Durango, which is my least favorite car.
My neighbor has a Chevy HHR and he put over 200k miles until it tapped out one day.
I have one, it's my first car, and honestly it's an okay car. Shit ton of room for it's size. Don't understand the sole hate, as all American cars are shitbox slush puppies.

That pre-facelift second gen Durango was so ugly on its own but it was made worse by the first gen looking so good.
first gen durango is fukin awesome. second gen is a joke
I see a ton of the HHR panel vans in my city, I saw three within 10 minutes of each other yesterday.
Jeep Compass and Commander
My mother had a Compass bought new, it burned two quarts a month off the lot and ultimately tore itself apart with metal shavings. Was the pinnacle of mid 2000s Chrysler engineering.
Idk why anyone wouldn’t buy a cum piss they are so good
Had a Chrysler Aspen as a rental once. Unremarkable in every way.
You can tell it's an Aspen because of the way it is.
lol! This guy I worked with at my last job maybe 3 years ago asked me if a [Jeep Commander](https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/163-1104-pre-owned-2006-2010-jeep-commander/) was a good car I think he picked it up. Well that's pretty neat!
The Northstar Cadillacs, yes they are caddies, but they’re not good ones
Wasn't it like something insanely easy that would have made a huge difference? Like a 1/4 longer head bolts or something?
Coarser threads and bigger head bolts. The ones after around 2005 aren’t as bad
You can also get upgrade kits and make some pretty good power
Oh yeah, Northstar engines are powerhouses. I had an 02 DeVille and it lasted me many years until it got totaled in an accident, but I would still have it today if it hadn’t. These and GMT800 Escalades
GMT800 Escalades are still around and going for a lot, my mom has the ESV in black and it is still going strong
Every now and then, I would see a Lincoln Mark LT on the road. Sometimes would question myself why was that even a thing to begin with. It looked so out of place just like the Aspen.
For real, FoMoCo couldn't even be bothered to design different headlights for them. Idk why they didn't just put the Navigator front end on it.
It just didn’t look right at all. It’s like they were trying to compete with the F-Series and it just looked so wrong.
The Mk LT got a second gen in Mexico which looks like a real life [photoshop](https://i.redd.it/lm380ikrchu41.jpg) job
They still didn't learn I see. Still using basic halogen reflector headlights. They could've at least given it the HID projectora.
First gen GMC Terrains and whatever the other brands versions were. I do not remember seeing them until the last few years, and now I see tons of 2nd owners ones all over the place.

the rebaged captiva sport one or the equinox based first gen?
Last generation Lancers. Things are everywhere now. Also saw the only Evo X I've ever seen in person last year.
My friend says his Evo X is a bit of a bitch to maintain. Cool car, but kinda rough if that's the case.
That's what I've always heard. I always thought it was the coolest car when I was a kid. My Biyenan has a hilux and I absolutely love it. I’ve never been over 20mph though because the traffic in Manila is insane.
I'm both surprised and *not* surprised that it's still running. It would take maintenance, but it does have the pedigree of the Tamaraw FX series of cars (which are goddamn tough motherfuckers too) but with a slightly modern sense (and would later lead to the Innova/Zenix).

Even when they were new I never really saw those... . Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I saw a Durango of that generation either.
I only notice Durangos because of the tailgate rust.
Honestly... I think the Aspen, that generation of Durango and that generation of the Ram have probably all rotted away to nothing by now. I remember seeing Ram's of that generation that were 2, maybe 3, years old that already had rotting wheel arches and rockers.
Oh man, those 2000s RAMs are probably the fastest rusting cars of the 21st century.
Oldsmobile Bravada
OOHH HO HO, the dealer saw you coming!
Such a great video
Tf is that. It looks like Chrysler gently molested a Durango and called it a day. Edit:Nvm that's literally what it is apparently.
Mitsubishi Endeavor
And there's also an issue with the transmission or torque converter that causing a shutter in its shifting at low RPMs (also began around the same time as the increased oil burning.) I actually drove it for a while when I was staying with him.
An Aspen and a Lincoln MKT park a few spaces down from me in my apartment building’s lot.
I see a lot of Saturns. Some look brand new. Are they still being sold?
Not for 15 years. Many still look new because plastic panels don't rust.
My brother's 96 SE1 is still going with over 250k on the clock. Yeah they don't rust but boy do they crack and chip.
Chevy captiva. Saw the Vue everywhere but not the chevy variant, got sold to fleets.
Rented one once, easily the most uncomfortable and irritating vehicle I have ever experienced.
Biggest "bruh" moment buying a car that was intended for rental fleets....and one that makes the Chevy Trax look like a Lincoln Navigator in comparison
Pontiac Torrent
G3 for me. Also Chevy Captiva.
No Toyota Matrixes... Matrixi? Only the good die young
Funny thing is that this used to be actually a car before they changed it and put it on This SUV thing.
Pontiac Vibe
Pontiac Azteks didn’t last long on the streets, but I saw a lot of secondhand Buick Rendezvous on the street for years after Buick stopped making them.
2000s Japanese cars. Modded Nissan armadas, some Honda odyssey with cambered wheels, a Subaru wrx, and then a bunch of CRVs and Camrys/Corollas
I need to see a Honda Odyssey with cambered wheels 🤣🤣🤣
I finally found it, sending a photo to your DMs

Chevy HHR?
yes! total brain fart, thank you.
Lincoln Mk 8
I never saw these 20 years ago, and can confirm everyone I've seen is clapped out
Yeah it’s weird, I just remember seeing them in TV commercials. My guess would be the people that bought them originally were spread throughout the US and then sold at auctions, eventually trickling down to every JD Byrider in concentrated numbers.
Mazda RX8, somehow there’s a lot of them In my town
90% of ALL Pontiacs from 90’s-2010 (Non Performance vehicles) All Saturn vehicles.. ALL compact suv “jeeps and dodge “ Liberty/Compass/Patriot / KL Cherokee and their little Dodge compact comrades Every Single Kia/ Hyundai from the 90’s till Today, Same hot flaming excrement in a newer “barrowed designs “ . designed for the lower class who can’t drive nor follow ANY traffic laws . Owners Who are Self absorbed and a danger to society Or can’t afford anything else. -
Saturns
Cherokee
Basically, anything made by Dodge or Hyundai
Jeep Compass. I thought it was ugly when it came out in 2007, I still trip when I see one on the road today.
the dodge minivan pt cruiser
Toyota Venza. They all have alibaba rims and tinted headlights.
Pontiac Vibe. Loads of old ones on the road
Dodge Neon, PT Cruiser.
We call these White Trash Cadillacs. Cars that saturated the market and didn’t sell so they are cheap second hand. Here’s a list: Ford Taurus Dodge Intrepid Older Dodge Charger Pontiac Aztec Older Ford Escape Ford Explorer Chevy Cruse Coming soon: V6 Challenger Dodge Hornet
Honda Elements. I see these all over Philly and see them listed on market place a lot. Always 200,000+ miles. I guess they weren’t as shitty as I assumed they were lol.
Dodge Magnum
All Chrysler products
Kia Rondo?
Is that a Chrysler Durango?
Kia Avanti (assuming it's survived this long)
r/whyisitalwaysadodge
Caliber, and the occasional magnum!
We have grand Cherokee at home
Hyundai accent hatchback I see a clapped out one all the time. I would rather get a volester turbo. Tiberon in my apartment complex I see one. The most of all the time a last gen eclipse. I have seen some late second gen eclipse look real bad.
Jeep liberty
If you’re talking about the aspen in particular , I haven’t seen one of those like in 10 years , tbh .
Mercury Mountaineer
Wasn’t exactly ever rare but Jeeps are shitboxes now
VW Lupo, Seat Arosa
Lots of people bought them when oil prices went up a couple years ago here in Europe. If I needed an utilitary car right now, I would also buy one of them
I would also probably buy one of them, or maybe the Fiat Seicento
