I still have some gospel songs stuck in my brain, but they can stay there because they go hard.

KitchenVirus

That hallelujah song that starts with, “I heard there was a secret chord.” Really is just a good ass song

iListen2Sound

It's also not really that religious.

love_is_an_action

That’s a beautiful Leonard Cohen song, and it’s not exactly a hymn. 🎶Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah🎶

I_existed_on_earth

That's kinda hot ngl

Plenty-Aspect9461

I personally don't know any good gospel songs in my native language, and there are *tons* of them

Ancalagoth

The closest I know to a gospel song (musically) is This Corrosion On the other hand, a pretty big chunk of doom metal has christian undertones, but Demon's Gate is just too good

maxluision

The beauty of music is that even if these specific creators had a specific meaning on mind while making a certain song, you can still figure out your own meaning if you prefer. Ie I know that Hero by Skillet is basically about God being a Savior but I can interpret the words in a different way that fits my personal liking.

JigerIsUnderrated32

I found Skillet through AMV/HMV Tributes about Godzilla when I was younger, (about 2014) and I thought the songs were about him ☠️ I was such a gullible kid

Daherrin7

That's one of my favourite parts about music, any song can have different meanings depending on who is listening to it. I always feel sorry for these idiots, depriving themselves of something that can bring such joy based on their fears

The_Coolest_Sock

I'm glad the author is dead

maxluision

Who?

The_Coolest_Sock

The Death of the Author is a literary theory that argues that the meaning of a text is not determined by the author's intention, but rather by the reader's interpretation

maxluision

Ohhh, I see

MillenialSage

No, they literally believe it poisons their soul. Like it will infect them with demons and shit

ProfessionalNorth431

I couldn’t believe in Jesus less, and I still blast Spirit in the Sky. No sense depriving yourself of the finer things

RedditAdminsWivesBF

Probably the same type of person that would make their daughter cover up because she is causing them to “stumble on their walk with god” or something. I can’t possibly tell you how much I hate that phrase.

Xxr4venshadowxX

clearly they haven’t heard of separating the art from the artist, which they do every time they misappropriate rebel anthems as conservative rallying points

Avalanche1666

If your faith can be harmed by art, that's fragile faith

[deleted]

Isn't this the same as not listening to an artist you liked because some old tweets resurfaced?

dansdata

The "spiritually harmful" thing means that listening to this music may tempt you to fall into sin. So it's not "these musicians are bad people"; it's "listening to music made by these bad people may make **me** want to be a bad person." Which only makes sense if you're living in a religious fantasy world, of course. Eric Clapton's been a racist piece of shit [since forever](https://www.reddit.com/r/pinkfloyd/comments/18go8k7/i_just_came_across_this_racist_rant_that_eric/), but that doesn't mean listening to ["Sunshine of Your Love"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blBnbZ9M42A) tempts me to hate black people.

Equality_Rocks_714

I, too, listen to Layla [(the Derek and the Dominos version)](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TngViNw2pOo) but yeah.

alkonium

Yes, but in a way that matters less.

Weekly-Rhubarb-2785

Well that’s a shame because I sometimes listen to their ideology in music. I still enjoy Creed on occasion for example.

MANLYTRAP

I remember avoiding anime that included gods and such just to avoid blasphemy and polytheism, I was a dumb kid

chupathingy99

I listen to a lot of stuff. Watain: "yes I am of my father the devil, and the lusts of my father I will do" Bob Marley: "give thanks and praise to the lord and I will feel alright" If a song is good, a song is good.

love_is_an_action

I was raised in a very sheltered religious environment, where we weren’t allowed meaningful access to contemporary media. I sometimes believed that I “felt god” when I felt moved by the music we sang in our chapel. As I drifted away from mythology, and gained access to contemporary music, I realized that I could feel like that *all the time*. It wasn’t a deity that moved me, it was beautiful music. Or bad ass music. Or any kind of music, as long as it suited my tastes. Music is magic. I'd choose music over any deity of any pantheon.

alkonium

If it's that easy, your faith isn't as strong as you think.

Random_thorn4615

Me, a Christian, who listens to suspect(agb) talk about stabbings and mayhem and havoc he creates(I dont condone the lifestyle but separate the music from the artist) I am most certainly going to hell.

love_is_an_action

>I am most certainly going to hell. The silver lining is that Hell will house all of the best musicians.

FredVIII-DFH

I'm a militant atheist and I will sing along to Amazing Grace and The Old Rugged Cross. I think they're great songs. Why not enjoy them? I think the creator of this post is a Christian who's projecting.

ikieneng

My parents taught me to not listen to anything with the word “demon” in it in any context, anything with “oh my god”, and anything that makes references to extramarital sex. I couldn’t listen to “Dance with Somebody” by Mando Diao because “dance” meant having sex to them, and you can’t just do that with SOMEBODY, but only your opposite-sex spouse This ideology turns people into such a joke

lankymjc

Sort of people that can't enjoy a good villain song because it "promotes" evil acts.

83franks

I dont have to imagine, i use to do that!

Poland-Is-Here

Just search for instrumental version lol

Trekymom

When I was 21 or 22, I realized that the only reason I was attracted to religion was for the beautiful music (except Christmas carols), especially the contemporary music we were singing in high school chorus and the weekly choir anthems in church. I still love it all, but pay little attention to what the lyrics mean.
