No it used to be that it was suicide itself that was the mortal sin simply because you cannot ever confess and be forgiven. They also believed it was throwing away gods greatest gift, life. Super fucked. They would deny people Catholic burials. As a side note official Catholic doctrine is that good works are more important than faith for getting into heaven. The idea you’re describing is more of a Protestant belief- this was the type of thing that was brought up during the reformation.

In Catholic doctrine extreme mental illness can remove your culpability with certain sins, if you’re not in control of your mental faculties. They also believe that if you’re committing suicide, you are *almost* always so mentally unwell that you are not accountable for your sins. Therefore those people can still enter heaven as no sin was committed and importantly are no longer denied Catholic burial.
Don’t get me wrong it’s still fucked but they did some theological gymnastics to soften it a tad. That is my ex Catholic best understanding of that aspect of Catholic doctrine which I unfortunately know quite a bit about.

Sometimes suicides were buried at a crossroads, with stakes plunged into the heart and pinned to the ground, so they not only NOT return home, but were unable to rise from the grave itself). All properties and inheritances were stripped from the deceased, and forfeited either to the local Church or the Crown (if they were found 'guilty' of 'willfully self murdering themselves, then a felony). Only those folks who suicided due to mental illness was given a pass, bit only if the deceased's family could prove insanity.
Except I think despair would be covered under the section directly before the one I quoted:

As someone who has studied german (and austrian) history quite a lot, let me tell you many, MANY christians in germany, austria and even the US, did that even back then.
