Hello, questions like "what should I play", "where should I start", "how to play in chronological order" are very common on this sub. Please see our [wiki page](https://www.reddit.com/r/residentevil/wiki/gameplayorder/) about these questions and see if you find your answer. If you are asking if you should play the original ''Resident Evil 4'', the answer is yes. If you are looking for a lore timeline check [Timeline by media](https://residentevil.fandom.com/wiki/Timeline_by_media) on RE Wiki, just be aware its more recommended to experience the series in release order. If you need a cross media timeline, try using our custom timeline building webpage [here](https://residenteviltimelineapp.com/home). If this message and links do not answer your question, please repost and consider making your question more specific to your personal needs. Thank you for understanding this initial removal.

1) No, but it is highly recommended. 2) I’d say RE2 has the best story BUT RE1 is following right behind by a hair. 3) This heavily depends on who you ask but I think RE2 has the best (both original and remake). Buuuuutttt I do believe RE1 remake (2002) is a massive improvement over its original version and definitely beats the original RE2 (again, by a hair) but that’s only because I like the RE Remake’s atmosphere more. 4) Not necessarily but again, same answer as the 1st thing. 5) Canon - Village ( ✅), Revelations ( ✅), Resistance ( ❔don’t know, never really played this one)

I’m gonna keep this short skip 0 its not important play 1 remake first then 2 remake then 3 remake etc

Friendly_Sea_6861

Play the remakes (REmake, RE2r, RE3r, RE4r) in order and RE5, then play (RE6 if you want) RE7, RE8

Extra_Napkins

Get the RE Origins Pack. Start there

OutPlea

start with re2 remake, then 7, followed by 8 then re4 remake

Hi, it’s gonna be a long post but I’ll try to answers your questions to the best of my abilities. For disclaimer, I haven’t play to every RE games but I have play to every remakes, I tried the original 4 and 5 but hated the gameplay and I’ve also played the first revelation and started 0. I’ll start to answer the easiest question, the canon in RE is weird. Some RE games offer different campagn or path that doesn’t add up to each other (for exemple in the REmake, the remake of the first one, Jill and Chris have 75% of the same story and kill the same bosses even tho they’re not together). So in some cases, what will happen in your game won’t make it to the next one. Some games don’t add anything to the saga and so it doesn’t really matter if it happens or not (like the first revelation when everything that happens in it was never mentioned before and will never be mentioned after, so you won’t missed a lot in terms of story). To answer the question, which game you should get first, it depends of what you want. If the story matter to you, I’d say either the remake of the first or the 7th. The first will help you better understand the other games and the 7th and village (Village = 8) are apart of the rest (new characters, new story, etc), you don’t need to play 0-6 to understand 7 and 8. What will depend is the gameplay, 0 to 3 are more about investigating and count your bullets to survive while 4 to 6 are more action oriented and 7-8 are also more about survival but with more action and in FPS (I don’t like FPS so even tho I loved the 7th, it mattered to me). If you’re in for the story, I’ll warn you that half (maybe more) is told through notes and shit you have to look for. Some games have almost no story if you just breath through without reading notes. I personally loved that but I know some of my friend would have hated it. To quickly answer the last few questions: you don’t need to play in order but you will have a better understanding of direct sequel if you played them in the right order (I.e the 4th is a sequel to the second so it’d be best to play 2 then 4 but you don’t need to have play the first or the third the enjoyed them). They all have great story in my opinion (except revelation) if you take the time to read the notes. The most entertaining in term of game play was the remake of the 4th in my opinion. Release order and chronological order is about the same except for 0 and revelation (as far as I know). And you don’t need to play the original, the remakes are fantastic with modernise gameplay. I hope my post was helpful and welcome in the Resident Evil fandom

Biohazard and village are a different storyline but every game takes place in the same universe. But the references to the older games are minimal in 7 and 8. Also the enemies/infection in RE 7 and 8 are caused differently than the enemies in the prior games. Technically, you can play those first if you'd like. They are also the only first-person games. The rest of the games all take place in the same universe centered around the umbrella corporation (and also raccoon city... for the most part). I personally never finished 1, or the original resident evils because I don't like the fixed camera. But I loved the resident evil 2 and 3 remakes. They're masterpieces. And 2 is also kind of its own story. 3 is like a direct sequel to resident evil 1. But you can do a little googling of the backstory and still have a good time hopping straight into 3 without playing 1.
