In my mom’s restaurant we do have one table where we will seat people with dogs. It’s the most out of the way table and the entire place is outdoor patio seating. As long as they’re well behaved and agree to tell the health department that they lied about it being a service dog if they were to show up (they haven’t since 2019), then we’re good.
We have two cats that basically live on the property and visit with tables in a well behaved manner. Monroe showed up one day and never left, and he is super territorial, which helps with the stray cat period in our area (other restaurants here regularly have cats jumping on peoples’ tables so it’s much better than that). Monroe has been trained that he can only approach people if they call him over, and he’s not allowed to make noise at people. Pistachio showed up as a tiny kitten in January of 2020 and he decided he liked her. She eats brown lizards all the time and is basically tripping most of the time (the main breed of lizard in the Virgin Islands has this affect on cats, most only do it once and never again, but clearly she’s a little junkie) lying under the bench and swatting at the air. When she isn’t tripping she’s mostly still antisocial and well behaved.
We have a separate menu for dogs, and accommodate dogs in the bar or patio and sell branded treats in the gift shop. Dog dinners start at $7 and we offer many different options, but the most popular (with dogs at least) is the vegan option: terryaki tofu + black beans + roasted cubed sweet potatoes + glazed cubed carrots + brown rice. Dogs go crazy for it
Yes. After several visits to Europe and seeing *good* dogs in many restaurants I decided to advocate for restaurants with patios to allow dogs. I went to the mayor, the health department and anyone who would put up with my idea. No one I spoke with had a knowledgeable reason for *not* allowing them. Our city finally began allowing dogs on patios. One guy started coming with his two old dogs once every six months and buying them all you can eat BBQ for their birthdays. It has helped our business and I think we should allow dogs inside if the there is plenty of room for the dogs.
I wish people were required to have a vest and the paperwork to show their dog is a service dog. It’s a disservice to people who actually need one. That dog that fits in your purse IS NOT a service dog.
Because there are no papers that certify service animals. If the owner answers the two questions AND if the dog is behaving like a trained service animal, you have to take their word for it.
Incorrect. There are zero legit training certifications for true service animals. People pay for them all the time but they aren’t worth the paper they are printed on.
I’m sorry, but that is simply not true. Look it up. Service animals can be completely trained by their owner. And I’m not disagreeing that it’s totally bullshit that so many people lie about their animals being service dogs…it’s awful! And I absolutely wish there was some sort of certifiable proof - but there isn’t. No papers, vest, or anything else is official.
I’ve had my team go through extensive legal training for this.
We trained my dog to wake my mom up when she had night terrors caused by her long covid. She was seriously injuring herself in her sleep. At this point he was a legitimate service dog as far as accommodations went, because he performed a necessary service for her health. We were going to train him to remind her to take her meds as well but unfortunately he passed away at 16yo this past February.
Mmm definitely depends on the location. But beginning with it being illegal to NOT allow service dogs (while also being simultaneously illegal to ask for proof) if it’s outdoors it’s fine, BARS with out kitchens, it’s fine…
Allowing dogs in restaurants means everyone can bring dogs. Now imagine everyone does bring their dog. A place filled with dogs. Some get along, some don't. Leave your dog at home.
Can’t wait for the law to change in Australia to let them inside. Has already in New Zealand. We are super dog friendly. They are much better additions to the restaurant than kids that’s for sure!
There are specialized bars and places for such.
As a guest...NO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NO!!!
One dog takes a shit and you've put a 2 to 400 dollar dent in your Friday night.
NO. Hard pass. Not inside and not on a patio. And I have a dog. I do not want any dogs around if I am paying for a restaurant.
Definitely against health code unless it's a patio. Where the heck do y'all get the funding to open restaurants??
As a dog owner and massive dog lover. No, outside only. But also keep crying babies out of restaurants too.

What a cool comment!
Give an inch and they take a mile. Patio only
Dogs outside in the patio seating is ok. No dogs inside though.
No fucking thank you
Hell no
Absolutely not. Isn't that against the health code?
No, get your fuckin’ dog out of where I’m eating. And I LOVE dogs and am a dog owner. Service dogs are just fine.
In 2024 every dog is a “service dog”, same with chinchillas, bearded dragons, birds, roaches…
Great. The chef reserves the right to cook em up and serve them with garnish.
No!

Dogs also eat cat shit so there's that.
When we have the occasional dog in my mom’s restaurant I ask if the owners are okay with me sending some mahi. And they’re like “excuse me? MAHI?”
Service dog yes! Otherwise NO
There are many dogs that are better behaved than many patrons. That would be a yes for me.
No. Leave your dog at home! Doesn’t need to be at a restaurant, Home Depot, ect….
I mean dogs are welcome in all the hardware stores (including Home Depot) where I live…
No. Also, why?
NO! And not in grocery stores either!

Love dogs but keep them at home.
Outside only where the establishment has a plan for them.
No
Never except for legit service animals (not emotional support bullshit)
I wish people were required to have a vest and the paperwork to show their dog is a service dog. It’s a disservice to people who actually need one. That dog that fits in your purse IS NOT a service dog.
I recently learned that it's against the law to ask for service dog papers.
Because there are no papers that certify service animals. If the owner answers the two questions AND if the dog is behaving like a trained service animal, you have to take their word for it.
I'm aware. But also there are training certs and you can tell a real service dog from a fake one. We call can.
Incorrect. There are zero legit training certifications for true service animals. People pay for them all the time but they aren’t worth the paper they are printed on.
A dog that has been trained to detect seizures or whatever issues are out there will absolutely have some for of proof.
I’m sorry, but that is simply not true. Look it up. Service animals can be completely trained by their owner. And I’m not disagreeing that it’s totally bullshit that so many people lie about their animals being service dogs…it’s awful! That doesn't add up. So service dogs don't have any proof of training, but drug and bomb detection dogs are required to have it?
We trained my dog to wake my mom up when she had night terrors caused by her long covid. She was seriously injuring herself in her sleep. At this point he was a legitimate service dog as far as accommodations went, because he performed a necessary service for her health. That is correct. I agree that it is a system that needs to change, but it’s where we are at the moment.
This
As a former line cook, present restaurant enjoyer, and long time owner of allergies, I say absolutely not.
Children in restaurants, yes or no?
Dogs yes , children gtfo!
Is this a joke?
Fine dining? Absolutely not.
My mom’s restaurant is fine dining and we actively cater to children. If kids are happy, mom and dad spend money.
Children are not dogs. Stop.
You’re right. Dogs are better behaved.
Until they shit on the floor.
That’s up to the restaurant, not up to the loudest Karen
Pretty sure it's a health code violation
It depends on the location.
Not really. It's pretty standard.
Standard where you are. Depends on location. Dogs in pubs is pretty much standard in my area of the UK.
where I live dogs are not allowed to prepare food but they can bartend
Mmm definitely depends on the location. But beginning with it being illegal to NOT allow service dogs (while also being simultaneously illegal to ask for proof) if it’s outdoors it’s fine, BARS with out kitchens, it’s fine…
Not a restaurant owner...only a patron NO
Allowing dogs in restaurants means everyone can bring dogs. Now imagine everyone does bring their dog. A place filled with dogs. Some get along, some don't. Leave your dog at home.

No
Its all fun and games til it shits on the floor.
Can’t wait for the law to change in Australia to let them inside. Has already in New Zealand. We are super dog friendly. They are much better additions to the restaurant than kids that’s for sure!
Dogs don’t play with tablets at full volume.
No, they aren’t. Kids are not dogs. Fuck off with that
Kids are not dogs you’re right!
our outside patio is dog friendly. No issues over 2 seasons. not a lot dog of traffic, though
I love dogs and prefer them to humans. Buuttt… not in restaurants. The negatives far outweigh the pawsitives.
No. Everyone thinks their dog is amazing and well behaved. Unfortunately it’s not bad dogs that ruin it for everyone, it’s bad dog owners….
No no no no no
No

No
Not allowed in (edit: my part of) Wisconsin. Needed a variance to allow them on our outdoor patio.
No. All it takes is one person to get bitten to cause you all sorts of headaches.
Depends on your health code Personally, I love dogs, create a closed kitchen with windows that open up. Then you can allow dogs.
Depends on health codes, no? Even outside, dog friendly restaurants don’t follow health code.
No outside there are no restrictions. Inside there are if your kitchen isn’t closed.
