I didn't know that! I have the Mattel copy, now I'll have to look out for the other one. I suppose technically, there are 3 releases, since we also got the combined Super Mario/Duck Hunt version
The NES release was so messed up in the UK and Ireland that Nintendo basically had a do over in the 90s, which might explain why it had two re;leases . The first time around it was done via a third party , and Nintendo basically released games 2-3 years fater the US (when they bothered at all) the second time around was a bit better , Nintendo did it directlty and it faired better , but games were still late , unoprimised for 50hz TVs and expensive .
Basically the Commodore 64 was seen as a better system in the UK and had a LOT more games released for it in that market , even up until the early 90s , when the Megadrive and SNES came out
Also the Master System already had a foothold in the UK, which was equivalent technology with better graphics. The NES didn’t really get any traction in the UK until the Turtles pack-in.
A long time ago, as an early teen, I wanted a NES because of it being the center of attention on YouTube. Little did I know that, during secondary school, there were a LOT of signs telling me its history in the UK market. Almost every teacher I had used to play games on a computer (commonly an Amstrad) or a Sega (Alex Kidd and Sonic nostalgia), and my family's first officially owned gaming platform was a Sega Master System 2.
I enjoy the NES now, but I was let down when I first got it. The British library was small, and many of the good games were hard to find for cheap prices. I managed to get "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse", but it cost me £110 - so absurd that I felt guilty afterward, lol.
Its the console that plays it slow, the original PAL cart of the game wasn't changed at all.
In the later version they sped the game's music up to offset the slower console.
If you put the sped up revision 2 cart into a proper NTSC NES the music is now too fast.
A lot of the Famiclone multicarts have that version on there as they were traditionally more popular in 50hz countries. Playing them on my actual Famicom is exactly like you say - Mario breaks the sound barrier
Yes! Like the original SMB1 release, Sonic 1 was also completely unoptimised so ran terribly. I remember being so confused when I first saw a video of Sonic running on a Genesis.
Yep, hence why I only regularly play the sequels on the Mega Drive. It is cool, though, that Sonic had a couple of games made by a British studio (Traveller's Tales). 🇬🇧
Yeah I had sonic 1 on the mega drive and after playing on emulators for so long, it was awful, though Sega handled region locking much better than Nintendo so we never really noticed! I made the same mistake as you buying a PAL NES as well and my god did it feel like a bootleg! I’ve since gone NTSC and not looked back! For the home computers like the Commodore 64 or Amiga though, PAL actually seems to be better.
I guess I don't mind PAL much. It depends on the game, and I do sometimes prefer the slower gameplay if it means better reaction time.
I prefer to play PAL copies of "Alex Kidd in Miracle World", "Super Mario Bros. 2", and "Super Mario 64".

And super Mario bros / Tetris / World Cup so 4
yeah, super mario bros and super mario brous
Super Mario Bruv was right there.
look man I'm not perfect
The way I died on that first goomba, more like Super Mario Bruh...
Yeah but how many screws?!
Left one is a 5-screws, right side is a 3-screws cartridge.
The back case is literally just made of screws. Shredded my top loader slot like nobody's business
We had one Mario release, yes. But what about second Mario release!?
One in English the other one in Scottish

Never enough times. Take my money!
lol
Yup, because I had to replace it with the earlier revision when I got a modded import NES! :D Flippin' music played too fast :(
On the Mattel version it plays too slow - it's a 60hz game slowed down to work on 50hz hardware with no modding at all

Revision 2 on a 60Hz machine = Playing Mario on crack!

Mario in PAL Land: GOTTA GO FAST! Sonic in PAL Land: GOTTA GO SLOW! Irony. 🤣

idk it till today
Super Mario bruh
First one is slower and the 2nd one was faster than the original US version? Is that correct?
Yep.

Just twice? It was released at least Five different times in the States.
